#denmark #danmark #america
In this video, we take a look at the differences we've experienced in drinking culture and bar culture in Denmark vs. America. So many things are different from the way that people socialize to the way that you order and pay for your drinks. Of all the little cultural differences between Denmark and the US, drinking and pub culture is one that we noticed almost right away.
The names of bars, the types of bars, what people drink in Denmark, and so many other things stood out to us. None of these Danish culture clashes were insurmountable, but they are big changes in many ways.
It's been an easy adjustment, but fun to look at nonetheless - especially with our fabulous guest, Chantal Al Arab. Chantal is an incredibly entertaining performer, drag artist, historian, activist, and author who graced us with her presence in the studio.
We sat down with Chantal for a full two-part episode of our podcast, What Are You Doing in Denmark and we had a blast.

1) Pity that Denmark is still the country where (what my French friend says) is the culture of what he called, "Screw you, smoking!"
France is just beginning to come out of dark ages regarding how embedded its smoking culture is.
Hopefully Denmark will follow.
2) I love beer, It is all I ever drink.
3) Nothing beats Danish Lakrids. Our licorice, those dreadful Red Vines, is pitiful by comparison.
4) I like that bars are solely for drinking in Denmark. It helps to demarcate the culture's aspects and qualities.
5) Seeing people of all ages in bars, anywhere would be a bit off-putting, especially if there is a drinking age wherever you are. Seeing kids in bars, would be a bit off-putting.
6) I ♥ that drinks are paid for independently in Denmark. Such makes paying a bit more responsible, it seems.
7) I never give anyone my debit card who I do not know. I pay by cash whenever possible. Or, if cash is not allowed, I pay at the end of the evening, or rounds.
8) I never depend on any restaurant staff to entertain me, or humour me, or ... EVER. They have their jobs to do, stuff to make and serve. They are not circus clowns. Nor are teachers in France which is why (again according to my French friend) kids are strictly admonished to "Soyez Sage!" (Be Good!) when they are dropped off at schools every day, whereas American kids are often told (Usually by the mums) to ... "Have Fun?"
>>> Incidentally literally "Soyez Sage" means Be Wise and not Be Good, but, it is also wise to be on one's best behaviours when in French schools which can be quite rigorous, and whose teachers can be quite stern and dogmatic.
Ringing the old bell in some bodega, may meens that you give a round of beer for all in the bars, so watch out ringing old bells unless you got some money to spent ^^.
You can diffinently get food in a kro. A kro for me is more a place to eat then to drink in my eyes. But yes you can get drink aswell there . Also sleep over is possible at some.
Yep, a kro is an inn, traditionally a former highway inn where travelers could stop to feed their horses, eat sleep and get some liquid food . Some have evolved into small hotels while others have kept only the eating or drinking . If you know Lord of the Rings, the Green Dragon in Hobitton and the Prancing Pony in Bri are both examples .

We do actually also have the “brown bars” term in Danish, like to the Dutch one you referred to. (At first I even thought you’d just misspelled “brun” 😂). We call them “brune værtshuse”, or “brunt værtshus” when it’s just a singular one (the former was plural). You can even find “brunt værtshus” as an official phrase in the official online dictionary “Den Danske Ordbog”😊
Some bars in Denmark offer Pariser toast and/or cowboy toast 😊
Love that Chantal is a guest in this one ❤️ I always listen to Mathias podcast on DR lyd where she is a regular guest 😄

When it comes to generations in the same bar, you should definitely visit Greenland. There, it's not uncommon to sit down with the parents, children, grand, and occasionally great parents😊
We really want to plan a trip to Greenland, just haven't made it happen yet 😊
@@RobeTrotting Could be a potential lay-over mini holiday if you're going back to the states for holidays anyway in the future :)
I don't know how it works, but I'd imagine there are flights from Greenland to America.. I mean its much closer :-)
... now that I think about it, its pretty expensive to go to Greenland.. So might as well make it a big holiday to take it in :-) A big layover holiday!! If you have plenty of weeks to invest on a greenland then USA trip :P
@kaedeyutani9197 then there's the extra cost of going to either Copenhagen/Kastrup or potentially Iceland...
Unfortunately there's no connecting flights to the US from Greenland😌
@@andreallan91 rip 😅 was a great plan in my mind 😂 oh well... 🙃
@@RobeTrotting I would love to read and hear all about your trip to Greenland.
I’ve for one love you can’t smoke everywhere, don’t smoke never have, grown up whit it where allowed smoking everywhere, but now you can’t, love it, at my home if you need to smoke its not inside, you need go outside
Many bars in Denmark have a bell hanging in reach of any visitor who wants to make it ring. It is about 12 cm in diameter and has a short rope attached you can pull to make it ring. But ringing the bell is a public announcement that you want to give a round of beers or shots.
If you ring the bell once it is a drink you give to the bartender. If you ring it twice it is a drink for anybody at the bar. And if you ring it three times it is for everybody present in the room.
Just realized how much I miss going out. And it is absolute the truth, that so much fun only happens late at night/early in the morning. In Denmark there will often be a bar open somewhere. Where I used to go out (in one of the smaller cities). There was a few very popular værtshuse, that would be open until like 2am. Then people would move on to either a Disco, or something like Old Irish Pub, that is both a pub, bar and Disco. They usually close at 5am. And then if you were hardcore, you could go to the Alcoholic place to be, a Værtshus that would be open till 10am, I think, or maybe 8am, cant remember, they only closed for a few hours each day for cleaning. There you could find people, who almost had it as a postal address. Was only there for around 5 min once, and then moved on. When I was young, I almost always stayed till 5 am, and then back then, I could walk past the bakery on my way home, and knock on there back door, and get a few warm, Te-Birkes from right out the oven, before going home to bed. I think now, most bakeries, get there, bread from a central bakery, instead of making it them self's during the night. But that right there, is such good memories. And also.. I was a young girl, walking home alone during the night/early hours of the day, and I always felt safe.
It was a part of going out back then to knock on the back door of a bakery and get hot just made bread and danish that's what I always looked forward to and you could walk for miles to get home as a young woman and not be scared but rhat changed so you couldn't even walk in the daytime withoutz someone grabbing your breasts as they walked by it happened to me twice or even going in a taxi and feel safe.
You guys crack me up. As a Dane, now 30 years in the US, I'm the mirror image of your perspective. Keep up the good work.
Chantal! Darling! My favourite veninde, author, the best cAnal tourguide, brilliant Banko opråber, super intelligent and brilliant on stage ❤❤❤
Thank you for the great..show? Conversation
Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it! 😊
I sort of envy American bars for the socializing with strangers at the bar. We can learn a lot there.🙂
However, the idea of dropping off your credit car in the bar is something I would never do, and food serving in a bar also seems a bit odd. Doesn't the whole bar smell of food from the kitchen?
Here, you'll be lucky if you can get an overpriced toast. 😅
I grew up around alcohol. Not that my family was drinking but my father worked at Carlsberg until around 1985 and my grandparents on my mothers side had two “værtshuse” on Åboulevarden in the 1970-80’s so i visited both my father at work but also went with my grandparents to work and I saw all these sad sad people who’s only thing in life was to get drunk. I think that’s why pretty much no one in my family drinks. We can have a drink or two or some whine but it’s only on special occasions.
In respect of tipping.. in resturant the waiters/waitress and chefs salary are part of the price of an item.. in general when you are pricing a meal it is around 14% of the price that are reserved to salaries.. dependent on the place of course.. if they have a high turnover it will probably be less, because they sell more..
Im a danish 16 gear Old boy and i love watching your podcast and listening to your POV here in Denmark. And this episode was fun to Watch when you ralles about drinking, because a lot of teens Down to 14 gear olds drinks a lot, its a Big difference then ik the US.

Well there’s a lot of teen drinking in the US as well, but the legal age is 21, yes.
Great you are taking on such a niche thing. I visited the "brown" bars often with my brother years ago. We could smoke, snooker and dart was free. You always had happy hours and cheap beer. That is very rare today. We would play with dices and the loser would have to give a "round" meaning buying beer to everyone at the table. As said before you can still find these bars but they are getting seldom
Shantaaaal ❤ Love that you got her on, she's such an amazing person 😄
elsker jer !
Guys, I just heard about the predicted dire flooding in Denmark ... the worst in 100 years.
Gosh, I hope you two are alright!
Freaks me out when I am in the US and I have to leave my credit card in the bar. I am use to either pay one by one or run a tap and pay by the end
Ah yes, the 10 shots, we learned efficency from the germans, but being danish, we mainly apply it to our drinking
Hi from colorado usa😊
I loved this conversation and would love to be able to smoke in a bar.
Hi from Copenhagen!
It's only allowed in the small bars (under 40 m2), and I think it is a matter of time before they also ban smoking there...
-but it's nice in wintertime that I don't have to go outside to smoke.😊
@@drumstick74 exactly, I live in Colorado the Rockies, it snows and gets cold and very windy.
They banned smoking on the street in some places, not a lot of people listen.
@@alexandriat5929 Smoking is still legal in the street, here (so far).
PS: I hear your state finally re-legalized the herb. If only more governments would follow. :) There is talk of a test trial of legalization in my city, but our justice minister is blocking it. Damn lobbyists.
@@drumstick74 Colorado was the first state 11 or so years ago to legalizes, we recently legalized mushrooms... so far no trouble.
This is the wild west out here lol.
@@alexandriat5929 Has it been *11* years already?? Wow, time flies! 😯
Hey hey you can absolutely drink wine in a bodega as long as it’s port and you have a beer next to it
Lol I wouldn't expect bar tips from someone with that name :-)
🥰
I've tried to convince people that a little 2cl shot of boonekamp (44% ABV) numbs your stomach to point that it forgets to vomit...
My experience is that those on the brink of vomiting just start vomiting from the thought of it, and doctors simply refuse to answer...
Greatest things do happen after 4am... just sucks when it's Thursday night.
But how many people in the world can brag about annihilating NFL Hall of Fame star Morten Andersen and a national TV host in foosball. 🙄
It was kinda tough to get through Friday at work.
Denmark is soooooo much more fun than Sweden! Every Nordic country accuses every other Nordic country of being "crazy drunks", but at least Danes are honest about it. They have created their own unique "alcohol culture". And to smoke in a bar...what a dream.
Ok Derek and Mike it's getting silly 🙂 You have to grow up and imbrace the Lakridsshots... .. keep the good content comming... 🙂
Haha, Derek puked from one his first night out in Denmark and it’s been too much trauma. Snaps is cool though and any other type of drink.
LOOOL ofc he did .. buuut come on ..@@RobeTrotting 🙂
Oh, you may also find people who are too young to drink at bars in denmark 7:30
Yeah big no no, don't leave your credit card with strangers. Even if they work there, your card is your card ))...
Perhaps with all this talk about smoky bars it would be a good time to discuss the very high rate of lung cancer in DK with its probable link to smoking? DK ranks 10th highest for overall rate in the world (behind North Korea which is 9th) and second in the world for women with lung cancer (after Hungary which is number one). How very hygge.
