The 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X Is A Redesigned Off-Road Capable Compact Truck

  • After a lengthy 16 years on the market, the #NissanFrontier has been completely redesigned for 2022. Highlights include all-new styling, a fully updated cabin with modern tech, a new 3.8L direct injection V6 and 9-speed AT, and a fully modern feeling driving experience. While the compact truck segment continues to evolve, the new #Frontier and #FrontierPro4x should be worthy considerations if you're in the market for a more affordable smaller work truck.

Good morning everyone! During the off-road driving scene, the Frontier had a weird fault that you can see and hear on camera. We spoke to Nissan about it and they have identified the issue in this pre-production model and it will be fixed in the final productions cars that are heading to dealer next month!

Having owned a couple Frontiers over the years, I'm fairly impressed with this redesign. It is a good looking exterior design and the new engine and transmission combo seems pretty impressive. That said, the interior still seems a bit cheap to me and is still missing a few basic features, like a telescoping steering wheel. Overall, I think it's a worthy update, but I have no plans to rush out and get one. I'm actually shopping for a low mile used 2nd gen Frontier right now, which will be my 3rd Frontier. I do like this redesign, but I see no reason to upgrade from a recent 2nd gen. Also, the 4x4 issue you had was a bit concerning.

@Jon Smith Who gives a sh*t. Not everyone buys a vehicle with plans to sell it. I (stupidly) bought into the Tacoma hype and purchased a brand new 2020 TRD OR and I hated it. It drove like sh*t, gutless power and an absurd level of chassis vibration at nearly all speeds, unbelievably unrefined for a vehicle that cost over $40k. I hated that truck so much I sold it 8 months later because I couldn't stand driving it everyday. The Tacoma is overpriced and over-hyped by cult-like fanboys. Sadly, I learned that lesson the hard way. Don't believe the hype!

I traded a 2019 Ranger for the Pro4x and the naturally aspirated engine was one of the main selling points for me. The Ranger had good power, but it wasn't consistent which seems to be common with turbos. I'm also concerned about long term reliability having such a small displacement engine moving so much weight. Besides replacing turbos I think the smaller engine will probably wear out sooner. The interior and everything else was light years ahead of the Ranger. That's the 2019 Ranger, I don't know if anything changed in the years after.

Really love the new exterior, just wish Nissan would have used that front end on the Pathfinder instead of the redesign they used but with a 1-2in higher suspension. I think Nissan is on the right track with their new trucks overall but they need to step it up and take advantage of the hype while they can. They need to come up with more engine choices (i.e. electric, hybrid) and more trims. Basically they need to copy Toyota's recipe with their trucks, having actual off-road version, luxury, Turbo version with more HP etc. Same with their Pathfinder. Really happy they finally got rid of their CVT too, hopefully they get rid it on their cars too. IF Nissan can get aftermarket support on their vehicles, they would blow up like Toyota has. That's my main issue with the Titan, barely if any aftermarket support to lift it, and make it off-road worthy.
P.S. That off-road transmission issue was troubling seems to need work to make truly off-road worthy.

And don’t get me started on Ford’s warranty service it’s sad. This truck is solid and as a daily driver way better than anything else out right now. I get stopped at least once a day someone complimenting this truck and wanting to know more. It’s like driving a smaller Titan. It's just too expensive. The primary benefit of the Frontier for the past decade and a half has been its excellent value. The price to capability ratio has always been strong with the Frontier, but now it's just as overpriced as every other truck. Nissan should have offered a base Pro4x in the low $30s without all the tech for people who just want the capability. Sadly, I think their sales will go down with this redesign.
