My grandson asked me grandpa what kind of music do you like. I pulled out VINAL and put Dio Caught in the Middle , full blast. Six year old dancing and laughing with joy at the sounds he was hearing. Thank you Ronnie for that moment. I am not ashamed for tears of joy
Saw many "shredders; at the Spectrum in '76 & '77. Every other Friday night there was a kick-ass rock concert there. Great times and many fried brain cells. :)
Sometimes an artist is captured in time for that time. Not for the future, or for commercial success... I have seen 3 decades of 3 genres, and Vivian Campbell for those 3 years was as filthy as any guitarist can claim. There was probably a higher-ranked guitarist at that time...But in those 3 years, I would put Vivian Campbell against anyone ever. Too bad he didn t continue that path and went for the money instead.
Same! There was a time in my life when I really pushed myself to the limits. This song immediately turned the tides, suddenly tiredness transformed info some kind of powerfull, dark energy! It's almost as if Dio somehow managed to turn this song into a spell, available for everyone to use, whenever in need. Thank you DIO!
What a great lesson for live musicians of any sorts! At 1:12 the second verse starts, however RJD starts singing the third verse instead, which is shorter than verses 1 and 2. At 1:26 Vivian Campbell moves on to the next section, following the length of the third verse, while the rest of the band keep playing the backing music of the second verse. Actually RJD improvised something to fill up for the space. But at 1:31 Vivian Campbell already recovered and they're all together again. So many decisions in a snap, the goal being the performance wouldn't suffer. It turned out great! I'm so glad they didn't edit this, it's 100% real live music.
1000%,.It's why you went to a Live concert back then..They were soo badazz,. They could play No wrong even when they played Wrong : ) Some people will NEVER UNDERSTAND~
While we didn't have cell phones, tablets, internet, Pandora, youtube, etc. back in the 1980's when I was spending my teen years, we did have phenomenal bands, musicians and music. Metal, rock, pop, etc. it didn't matter what one was into, it was simply phenomenal. Today's music isn't even worth listening to for free on Pandora, radio, ect. Looking back 30+ years, I'm very fortunate to have grown up in the 1980's and seeing bands like Dio. R.I.P. Jimmy Bain.
Jacobin777 Yeah!!! Totally agreed!! I came in the us solely to go to live rock shows because nobody came where I was born. And man, did I see shows!!! Being in a line of work where I had to work weekends and holidays and nights, I even quit jobs to go rockin!!! Long live rock🤘

I always loved listening to Jimmy Bain play bass and I agree that he was one of the best pick players out there as well as being as solid as a metronome while keeping time. I'm going to miss J.B. and I hope he's just chilling out with the rest of my favorite players waiting for the rest of us so we can all jam together. R.I.P. Jimmy
Man, what mad performace this was. Mad voice by Dio, goddamn mad drum skills by Vinny Appice and definetly MAD guitar skills by Vivian Campbell. God, this was awesome.
I'm 49 YRS old.I grew up in the 80s.I seen dio in concert plenty.but Vivian Campbell was his best guitarist.he is talented, fast and had stage presence.he looked fucking cool up there swinging that axe.
Viv has recently hinted that he felt inferior to other more technical minded guitarist of the day, and now understands why he was so highly thought of. Energy! He had taste, speed and presence but that energy as displayed here propelled him to the top tier. Probably had a lot to do with his future direction. He didn't know how good he was.
That's really cool, I know Eddie felt the same way about Randy Rhoads. Energy! That's totally it - the solos on Sacred Heart are freaking amazing in their energy, in my opinion Craig Goldy could not follow anything Viv did in that sense. It's cool Viv realized what he is as a player & musician.
jonas brave Viv just smokes in this concert, and will always be a favorite. EVH was incredibly rhythmic. I have known guitarist that could play Malmsteen Arpeggios from Hell that just didn't have the rhythmic ability to play Atomic Punk. If you can play EVH, you are probably a decent drummer too.
Vivian's "future direction" which I'm assuming you mean Def Leppard lilkely has nothing to do with his techincal abilities as he could then and now play circles around Phil Colleen, it's about paying the bills. He probably makes a ton of money with Leppard and I don't blame him one bit for taking the gig. The reason why Iove Viv's style is that it was in the same vein of Gary Moore of that era, not a bad influence to have. So many great guitarists of that era who were pound for pound as solid or more as EVH and they are in no order...Moore, Vivian, Lynch, Lee,DiMartini,Schenker, Meneketti...all just brilliant.
His voice was pure magic! Being able to perform live at this level of mastery is just insane and very rare if you think of today's Barbie Dolls not being able to reproduce what's on the record without and digital help.
First concert I was let into by the security guard in Seattle at the Coliseum. 1983...incredible...epic. Knights fighting with swords on stage...laser beams bouncing off the metal...Dio in the center...ten's of thousands of screaming fans...\m/
When he hit the scene as a solo artist in 1983 I had no idea he was over 40. He had the energy and singing range of a 20 something. He was just simply AMAZING!
Both Ronnie and The Spectrum are no longer with us (RIP). Your thoughts are exactly what was missing from the next year's concert with Goldie. He's a fine guitarist, but looked constipated trying to keep up with Vinnie and the boys like Viv did. Viv was in front of the tempo, Goldie was playing from behind, big difference.
1:20 - Ronnie gets lost & sings the wrong lines for the 2nd VERSE, confusing the bass and messing up the guitar who sort of try to follow the singer out to chorus for two bars, but then go back to playing the verse. Verse 2 SHOULD go: You've got wings of steel But they never really move you You only seem to crawl You've been nailed to the wheel But never really turning You know you've got to want it all ^ what Dio does instead is sings the 3rd verse which has only three lines, then hesitates and makes up some words to rhyme with 'never hide again.' The music is SO messed up here but it's cool how the band recovers like 'ah no big deal!' 2:16 - here he sings the third verse here again because, hey, it's a good one!!
Haha! They made a good recovery. I've seen Dio do that on occasion. I think he would smoke a little weed before the show and kinda forget some lyrics. It's a wonderful little flaw. Adds danger. Amazing performance!
It's important to see that even the great ones make mistakes. Makes me feel better about my own performances (I am a singer) because I aspire to be as great as Dio, and I feel a lot of pressure to never mess up. Good to know that even he messed up sometimes.
Dio is one of the few acts out there who sounded better live than on the record. As far as I'm concerned this is as good as it gets. I think I'll listen to this one more time.
Absolutely LOVED this lineup with Vivian Campbell, Vinny appice, and Jimmy bain! What a tight rhythm section and Viv was one of the best young hard rock guitarists in the world. It's a shame it didn't last long

What and singer !
Shredders of the 80s are the real deal.
Saw many "shredders; at the Spectrum in '76 & '77. Every other Friday night there was a kick-ass rock concert there. Great times and many fried brain cells. :)
vivian tore shit up but his comments years later about ronnie can never be forgiven
@Graham Clark Goldy was just as good.
@@therealistintheboot8822 Goldy was technically better, but Vivian wrote the classic Dio songs and solos.....
I can't believe Vivian was just 22 here, and he played like a monster.

There’s so much power, emotion and energy in this song. I agree
What age are you? 9?
Vivian Campbell...Back when his guitar playing could be heard. What a monster player he was!
It's a shame he's wasting away in Def Leppard.
Still 🤘s with last in line
You can really pick up on his Gary Moore influence with that speed playing!!
Amazing!!!
@@jimthar17 so true, waste of talent beng in Leppard
When Vivian Campbell plays a lead, a lead has been played !
Right on!👍🏽
He should be leading a band instead of languishing in Def Leopard.

Oscar M u suck
Same here, saw them in Philly too. Just the lighters in our hands.
Hey Buddy I agree I was around in the '80's and it was a decade rich in musical innovation.
I like the fact that everyone in the band performs at 150% faster than the studio version!
so true
Nobody noticed Dio jumped ahead with the lyrics but they caught it and he totally played it off. Master of Reality! DIO RULES!
Yeah they blew through that second verse. Major mistake. Recovered like a boss though. Impressive.
Yeah the band was rushing so bad Ronnie couldn't quite keep up.
Nerves I guess of a set opener
Wow, all these years and I never noticed. Thanks.
A true Dio fan would know that ... didn't matter .. Dio pulled it off like the master he was !!
Lyrics:
It's the same old song
You've gotta be somewhere at sometime
They never let you fly
It's like broken glass
You get cut before you see it
So open up your eyes
You've got desire
So let it out
You've got the power
Stand up and shout, shout
Stand up and shout, shout
You've got wings of steel
But they never really move you
You only seem to crawl
You've been nailed to the wheel
But never really turning
You know you've got to want it all
You've got desire
So let it out
You've got the power
Stand up and shout, shout
Stand up and shout
Let it out
You are the strongest chain
And not just some reflection
So never hide again
You are the driver
You own the road
You are the fire go on explode
You've got desire
So let it out
You've got the power
Stand up and shout
Stand up and shout
Let it out
Stand up and shout
