  • Hi everyone! Today I'm talking a bit about the worst (maybe) art advice that I received in artschool while I paint on the background this a self portrait in oils.
    Oil painting done on a sheet of prime linen.

    I gave up painting because of a bad art teacher. I used to be really praised by all my teachers, went to university art classes while still in high school because my teachers thought I was too advanced, and had my art shown in books with far greater artists than myself…and this one art teacher just hated me for not using abstract art styles, and had me in tears. I was going and his criticism really hurt me. It didn’t make it fun anymore, and I gave it all up because of him. Over the years I have painted or drawn portraits for special people. All my old artwork I gave away. People who have seen the rare portraits that I have done since have asked me to do some for them but usually I just decline because it still hurts.
    But perhaps I should get back into it again. You are a great example of why you shouldn’t let those awful art teachers win, and this video really inspired me to take up portraiture again. Thank you.

      I am very sorry to hear, sometimes these things can hurt us really bad but I hope you give art another chance even if it’s only for your own enjoyment, I’m sure you have great talent and it would be a shame not to use it. I came to the realization that very often others don’t know better than yourself about what’s best for you, it doesn’t matter if they are teachers or professionals. I’m sending you a hug ❤️

      Good ! So , at that time you have decided that one persons opinion matters more than what you felt and what others reflected to you - and this was the result of that decision . Now you know . But the great thing about this life is that you get to decide again ! :) :) :) Have you ever wondered what can happen if you didnt make that voice of a bad teacher your own ? You are different you than you were than and you have absolute right to choose again what voice you prefer to listen to :) :) :) . I had the same thing , not with the teacher , but my father . It took me 30 years to finally realize that I do not have to choose that voice to be mine any more ! So, I started slowly and shyly , and it developed quite quickley and wonderfuly ! And I am SO happy that I allowed my self to let go of what didnt serve me any more ! :))))) So, what do you choose TODAY for your self ? .... All the best on your quest !!! :))))))))

    At school my art teacher held up one of paintings in front of the class and said, 'this looks like a mentally handicapped child has painted it'. I was crushed. I didn't really paint much then until my thirties, when I went on to earn a living at art and also to teach it. Did't go to art college though.

    Because art school
    College or normal elementary -high school students do not know anything and there brainwashed so they get jealous his others who do art especially if they do
    Not like a self-taught artist. I never went to school or college stupidly for art. I've taught myself Sence a toddler and not even my family helped I've just painted and because I'm born with a condition called microcephaly and struggle to academically my mother also was told by stupid sick ignorant doctors told my mother I’ll never learn to talk and function at all and be normal like you all so funny I was born and became an artist stopped speaking gibberish angel talk, learned to talk and 9 years old and ive prove fools that I can talk and be normal in my own way. Funny as an artist about to be 29 on January 18th and post my art on RUclips using this account right now and I'm writing a book about my life, my struggles, how I became an artist, and why everyone follows their dreams no matter what. I've seen people tell people as I say with their stupid ignorant said saying my art is bad you can't be an artist go to college and you're not a self-taught artist if you teach your send and dumb fooks make evil mean comments about me which I always block and when they make videos and say don't do
    This mistake in art or does or don't because to me there wrong because van gogh say there is no rule in art there is no mistake. I lovd art more then anything in the world and animals and I love old style art not stupid new styles with no creativity and they just pant scribbles or plain backgrounds with nothing on paper on canvas and call or art and turn away and scroll away people art even scroll away peoples great art over jealousy because that's still happening to me which my goal is make or for 10,000 k.
    My advice for you is never to listen to ignorant fools. 4:49

    Exceptional self-portrait Yolanda, it's magical how you can turn those heavy brush strokes into smooth textures! And yup, awful advice indeed but I am glad it made you more determined towards your art style! A few years back, I took an art course (that was supposed to end in a big exhibition in my hometown) and when the professor took a look at my work and told me "well, this is not art, this is just illustration, we can't exhibit this"... Worst part is that she didn't actually teach us anything, she just spent the hours bragging about her art career and showing off her paintings, without ever posing a single question to her audience or discussing anything (we didn't even draw during the course, we just had to sit around a table and listen to her insisting on how great she is)...

    • @YolandaBlazquez
      @YolandaBlazquez  2 года назад +3

      Wow it seems like those people are everywhere... What an experience! I hope it wasn't too long. (Were her paintings any good?)
      I can't understand the whole "illustration isn't art" thing, who gets to decide? 😅 sometimes the line is very blurry and still, illustration often takes as much skill as what we could call traditional art.
      Thanks a lot! ❤️

    • @myfrawings
      @myfrawings 2 года назад

      @@YolandaBlazquez Back then, I actually considered myself more of a traditional artist, so I was quite honored to be labeled as an illustrator (this was what I wanted to become) XD I was not really fond of her paintings (just joined for a chance to exhibit in a historical building) & I quit after the first 4... bragging classes! I love this video, it's liberating and it shows that apart from a brilliant artist, you are also an open-minded and respectful person!

    You are an amazing artist! A good teacher is so valuable, but a negative one can do much damage. Had the same experience with a bad teacher. Later I had to figure out why I create art. Because I love it! Never forget why you are passionate about art. So many artists before us were told they weren't good...like the impressionist! We are in great company!

      Lo de las referencias es de traca, no sé si la gente se piensa que los grandes maestros se lo inventaban o qué pero obviamente que tenían modelos 🤣 si ellos tenían referencias, cómo una simple mortal no va a usarlas??
      Si tu experiencia fue buena ya me parece mucho y me alegro! Yo básicamente pagué por una licenciatura y ya 😂 no aprendí nada ni me aportó gran cosa.
      Los profesores deberían guardarse ese tipo de opiniones porque tienes razón, igual a esa persona le sienta como a nosotras y se motiva, como se hunde y lo deja del todo :(
      La gente es muy plasta, entiendo que la idea del inktober es con tinta pero qué más dará? La idea del reto era mejorar en el entintado, entoces por qué no iba a valer el entintado digital?? A mí me gustaría ver lo que haces 😇

    I never went to painting or drawing classes, whatever that means, nor do I use iPads, I don't know anything about digital drawing, I'm old-fashioned, I learn on my own, I see something and I draw it, I pay attention to the colors and I use everything to draw the color on my paper or whatever works for my drawings. Ugh, I never had a good relationship with art teachers. But one phrase still keeps ringing in my ears. Just before graduation my art teacher said “I think that you could reach great heights in an artistic career, if you could only do something about your discipline.” I felt offended, but years later I realized that the man was right.
    And, off topic: I could watch you paint forever! Did you paint this in one session?

    • @YolandaBlazquez

      I painted it in two sessions letting the first layer properly dry before painting on top. Sometimes I don’t wait at all depending on how much time I haver or the look I want to achieve
