  • Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 11:22. Guitar chords are provided on-screen.
This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson teaching a banjo instrumental break for the popular song, "Wagon Wheel."
    According to Wikipedia:
"Wagon Wheel is a song co-written by Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show. Dylan recorded the chorus in 1973; Secor added verses 25 years later. ... The song has been covered numerous times, notably by Nathan Carter in 2012 and Darius Rucker in 2013."
On this video I teach a suggested banjo break lick by lick, phrase by phrase, using on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at
first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts.
Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com.
    Hope you enjoy.

This is my all time fav song. I stopped playing the banjo over 10 years ago and am just picking it up again.. I have been playing guitar for over 50 years now... Wagon Wheel and your site and way of teaching brought me back. Thank you so very much. You are the best teacher.

I've played it in a group with an accordian, guitar, saw, mandolin, and me on violin. Probably the best way to enjoy wagon wheel in my opinion.

Little known fact: our favorite banjo teacher is in a band called Clark Family Trio. In the beginning it was a quartet (same name though) and Bill is the only one not named Clark. Now it's a trio and he's still the only one not named Clark :-) He is a heckuva guitar player too.

It does seem a little difficult to nail down into a solo recognizable banjo version but no matter, the melody is very enjoyable and a good one for beginners to practice to build movement and finger coordination. Or ... Just kick bacon the porch with a cool refreshment and play enjoying it.

Hey Will! Loved this lesson. I'm about 2.5 Months in my banjo playing and I'm obsessed. Loved this song arrangement. Quick question, is this what I would play throughout the song or just the chorus? If not what would you suggest for the rest? Thanks I'm advance, really appreciate it! 👍👍🪕

At the beginning of the 7th measure (at 7:27 into the video) the tab says "T-S". Should that be a "T-H"? You perform a hammer-on instead of a slide.
