I appreciate the effort to not do the same cookie cutter demos that are seen on other channels. The Chicago music exchange does it right, they have a winning formula that looks and sounds great. The addition of high quality effects can be overwhelming at times however i would call this use as tastefully done. The guitar is out of range for most players including myself yet i still have a great appreciation for good tone and quality playing. Well done.
Wendell Laffin Extremely well said. ***** thank you for all the time you guys put into these beautifully made videos, it's truly enjoyable to watch not just for the guitars but for the whole experience of it.
Wendell Laffin Thanks for the kind words! I sort of can't stand "product demos" myself, so I aim to make videos for people who don't like them. If that makes sense. There's enough blues noodling out there already-- I don't want to contribute if I can avoid it. Not that there's anything wrong with blues noodling.
This is a great guitar! I mean put some EMGs in it, route the body for a Floyd rose, brass nut and of course add the new g-force tuning system to go from drop C to drop A and then boom you got a perfect guitar...(I'm completely joking)
Yeah, but actually there must be these kinds of Frankensteins around, because these things were definitely done to some guitars. However, whenever you see a 56-60 Les Paul advertised, it usually says "completely original". Just wondering...
Wells306 yea it's pretty fucking ridiculous that those of us who want these instruments the most, and would actually play them, will never be able to afford them AND pay rent/bills at the same time haha
Well I totally understand the frustration with the prices but please keep in mind there was only a handful produced of this guitar in 1957. they are some of the most sought-after guitars in the world. There are millions of guitar players and only a handful to go around. I think 59 grand is more than justified For a real 57 Les Paul Custom
Never been on your channel - the first video is a guy playing 'Hummer' from Smashing Pumpkins with one of the prettiest Les Pauls i have ever seen. NICE!
You always play the Pumpkins superbly, if I were Corgan I'd get you in the band if Jeff would leave! I mean that. CME has been making the best demos in the last 2 years or so. I like everything about them, the playing, the instruments of course, the little room with the painting and the hanging lights, the humour. DO MORE! Ciao
My uncle bought a 1956 brand new for $275. He died in 2010 and my cousin now has it. Out of 16 brothers and sisters, about ten of them played, my uncle being the best and my Dad being next (1962 J45 sunburst). Out of a million cousins, I am the only one in my generation that plays. I have so many memories of family get togethers and those instruments. At that time, I didn't realize what guitar history I was experiencing. I own a Black Beauty (1970) that was not a great Gibson year and a 1979 "The Paul that is my "Go To" instrument. I have decided to add a J45 also. I just have to leave it under the bed long enough to gather enough dust that I can pull it out in front of my wife and say "I haven't played this in awhile, I wonder if it still sounds good"?
Joel, kick ass as usual. You are the best reviewer on youtube. Thanks to you, i did some great shoppings. Thank you for that man. Greettings from Argentina! (Sory my bad english :))
who are the 12 people who thought this guitar sounded bad. those people need a psych evaluation . this guitar sounds absolutely amazing . these guitar are counted as being in an elite class all their own tone wise how could you not think this guitar sounds amazing.
danyjr I'm working on it. I usually work out Royale (my band) stuff in these demos. Nice little perk of the job-- I can try out riff ideas on killer gear and then toss it out into the Internet and see what flies and what doesn't.
I was recently surprised to find how similar old style les paul customs and gibson explorers sound. The custom has more bite and brightness but both have that hollow low mod growl and openness.
Johan Hällgren HUGE Crimson fan. HUGE Yes fan. HUGE Genesis fan. I would call '70s Prog my guilty pleasure, except that I don't feel guilty about it one bit. Larks/Starless/Red is probably one of the best 3-album runs in music history.
Awesome! Ive always appriciated your playing, and now im amazed! Im having quite some trouble finding others of mine generation who also like prog (Im only 16). WOuld be awesome if you did an ES-175 and played some Howe!
Hello Joel, I'm about to buy a LP and i've been checking a lot of videos in order to make a choice. I've taken a liking to your channel because your playing is very interesting IMO. I'm a HUGE KC fan, and i'm totally happy that you are as well, considering how I like you play. I think I'm gonna buy a black reissue 1957 custom LP with 3 pickups from 2014, and achieve my dream of owning something like Fripp's instrument, and make my own sound like he does too well. It's very pricy, about 6K, but it's going to be my life companion anyway. I'd like to hear what you think about it, or if you think I should look for another custom LP. Anyway, thank you for letting me hear all those sounds and help me make up my mind! I'm from Europe but I'd definitely love to visit your guitar shop one day! Best Regards!
Why do some Black Beauties sound thinner/chirpier in the middle position than others? Are some not in phase while others are? I own a 2005 custom shop 1957 reissue and it doesn’t sound the same in the middle position.
Spencer Cammayo i have 2 gibsons. but............i play one guitar exclusively.....an epi lp. so, don't blame epiphone, they are not worse than gibsons, just built by slaves.
Double that price and you’d still come up short. One of these (same year, model, w/OG hang tags)sold at Norman’s Rare Guitars in the ballpark of $125K about 5 years ago.
love the hummer solo at the start
Can you guys put this on hold for me? I can only donate my plasma twice a week.
You still dating that same chick? Woof!

I probably couldn't even afford the toggle switch cap.
Wells306 yea it's pretty fucking ridiculous that those of us who want these instruments the most, and would actually play them, will never be able to afford them AND pay rent/bills at the same time haha
***** Yea that is pretty cool that we can at least play these beauties during a visit to the store. haha enjoy!
Wells306 It's $54,995.00. www.chicagomusicexchange.com/products/gibson-les-paul-custom-black-beauty-1957-s749
***** I'll take two, they're cheap.

Loved the Pumpkins playing.

Every time I watch a Joel video I have to watch it twice over, just to gain some minuscule understanding of the beautiful sounds he creates
George Lamb That's an incredible compliment. Thank you.
Joel is still the best guitar player
It sounds huge everytime ! Good Job
Cheers from Paris

Thanks Joel..................
......I'm Fripping out!
I wonder if he will do that gentle light picking thing he does
(clicks)
(not disappointed)
Keep these vids coming
holy mother of everything that is one hella beauty! Shame I can't afford to place my sights on one in real life!
Out of hand as usual! What was that, Prog-Shoegaze? Who knew the world needed that?
Greg Stella Prog-Gaze! We've invented a new genre!
Corgan intro, love it!

That El Capistan sounds amazing
Caleb Mills Yes indeed it does. I've got one on my pedalboard and it will probably never leave it.
Some really nice playing yout got! Wish i was that great at soloing
That thing sounds beautiful clean, but man right at the end when he throws the gain at it, it becomes WICKED! :)
Kudos for playing some Smashing pumpkins on that beauty
What a nice demo. Heaven tone. Thanks.
Joel, kick ass as usual. You are the best reviewer on youtube. Thanks to you, i did some great shoppings. Thank you for that man. Greettings from Argentina! (Sory my bad english :))
Love the Hummer!!
Brad Carroll What song is that in the beginning? Thanks.
Elimnio Hummer by the Pumpkins
Joel Bauman Oh, I get it now! :-) Thanks!!
Elimnio Beautifully executed, by the way.
My dream guitar. Amazing.
who are the 12 people who thought this guitar sounded bad. those people need a psych evaluation . this guitar sounds absolutely amazing . these guitar are counted as being in an elite class all their own tone wise how could you not think this guitar sounds amazing.
Gorgeous guitar. Though with the 3 pickups it is tough because the pick would be hitting it all the time and slowing me down
1:41 please to god somebody tell me what song that is.
And if it isn't a song yet, goddamit Joel, turn it into one. I'll buy it!
danyjr I'm working on it. I usually work out Royale (my band) stuff in these demos. Nice little perk of the job-- I can try out riff ideas on killer gear and then toss it out into the Internet and see what flies and what doesn't.
danyjr Hummer by Smashing Pumpkins. Bridge area.
Joel Bauman Cheers Joel! Always nice to hear your demos.
Thanks, man.
Wow. Nice pumpkins intro
I was recently surprised to find how similar old style les paul customs and gibson explorers sound. The custom has more bite and brightness but both have that hollow low mod growl and openness.
These PAFs are driving me crazy.
That neck pickup was like "drop the atom bomb" of pickups.
Very nice. Do you take Monopoly money?
Too cool! Didn't know you where into King Crimson. Are you also a fan of Steve Howe and Yes?
Johan Hällgren HUGE Crimson fan. HUGE Yes fan. HUGE Genesis fan. I would call '70s Prog my guilty pleasure, except that I don't feel guilty about it one bit. Larks/Starless/Red is probably one of the best 3-album runs in music history.

Johan Hällgren The next time we get in a really cool vintage ES-175 I will for sure do some Steve Howe stuff for you.
Hello Joel, I'm about to buy a LP and i've been checking a lot of videos in order to make a choice. I've taken a liking to your channel because your playing is very interesting IMO. Need that custom model 😍😓
I might buy it, I'm not sure, I'm still debating..
Buy it
Ari Hernandez Buy it.
Very cool ‼︎
Ok I'm going to go play Hummer now. =]
how to you get that amazing tone?
Pumpkins :D
Did Gibson sell it with 3 pickups or was the 3rd pickup added?
Why do some Black Beauties sound thinner/chirpier in the middle position than others? Are some not in phase while others are? I own a 2005 custom shop 1957 reissue and it doesn’t sound the same in the middle position.
He started that just like greg from wildwoods
I need that Gibson. How much is the SRP plus the shipment fee to the Philippines? How and where to order. Anyone? Thanks 😊
And here's me sitting here with my £500 Epiphone LP
Spencer Cammayo Epi LPs are awesome.
Spencer Cammayo No shame in that. My first "real guitar" was a cherry red plus-top Epiphone Les Paul. Loved that guitar.
Spencer Cammayo i have 2 gibsons. but............i play one guitar exclusively.....an epi lp. so, don't blame epiphone, they are not worse than gibsons, just built by slaves.
oh my god.
Danny Kirwan
Ask yourself a question

Vos finish ?
Only 55 k huh? Not even selling my altima and my CRV. Lol
It sings...but it worths more than I could ever pay for a guitar...for anything at all.
Like how he talks about as if someone would ACTUALLY play it...
Chris was born in 1957.

ill trade you for a heart
SUBSCRIBE & TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS TO NEVER MISS A GEAR DEMO!
That is MAhogany
Who the fuck brings out those effects when you have a real '57 black beauty....
Exactly what I was thinking.
Yeah, and who plugs it in?! I mean, you should just play it acoustically.
They all sound the same to me
Here's what happens when you give a hipster a 59000$ guitar.
Double that price and you’d still come up short. One of these (same year, model, w/OG hang tags)sold at Norman’s Rare Guitars in the ballpark of $125K about 5 years ago.
How can we rally here a vintage instrument through a ton of shit effects?
