Oldhead Deftones fan here just to say it doesn't really matter how people get into them, who cares, the gate is wide open and everyone is welcome. I think the main appeal is actually due to how timeless some of their stuff feels, and also due to the fact that the sound Deftones pioneered has made a huge comeback in recent years which has led young people to go back to check out the source. When I was a kid we did the same thing with bands like Misfits and Joy Division because we wanted to know what bands influence the big hits of our time (like Deftones but also early 2000s bands The Strokes, White Stripes, etc.)
New head Deftones fan, I'm 21 and me and my band mates are into Deftones heavy. Thank you to the old head fans from the 90s and 2000s for making it a timeless sonic experience. It inspires some of my bass lines.

Deftones are legit good. A lot of their stuff has aged really well and I feel like they were always one of those more interesting bands to come out of that moment.
For me, I was introduced to them very recently. What struck me about them that I hadn’t heard before is the atmosphere of their music. They have this dirty, grimy, moody, murky atmosphere combined with very sensual and almost “high” emotions and lyrics and soundscapes. I instantly feel in love with the dreamy, vibey and high feel combined with the angry, murky, muddy tone. It made me think of gutter life. Living in poverty, addicted to drugs and alcohol and miserable with the lifestyle, but holding on to relationships or sensuality that gave some pleasure to life. Deftones taught me to pay attention to atmosphere which in turn made me look back at TOOL and it suddenly clicked how good tool was cause they had a similar atmosphere. Tool’s atmosphere however went in a more primal, philosophical, contemplative direction. These two bands I tie together and love so much now.
