Elitism exists in every genre, and pop is one of the most toxic. Whenever they come across someone who doesn’t like top 40 radio their dialogue is: “You clearly have no taste” “You just need to listen for the beat” “You’re just salty that they’re making money” And *”DEATH THREATS”*

the fact that "underground" has become an aesthetic - because it gives to the ones who identify with it a sense of exclusiveness - just emphasizes how even people who are occupied thinking about avoiding "mainstream propaganda, manipulation and no-art-just-entertainment" are really just kinda perpetuating such alienation and consumerist praxis precisely by focusing on their identity/aesthetic rather than actually just enjoying music independently from its production's origins and goals
You see there's this thing called the poppier side of underground which especially happened in the 70s 80s and early 90s with Rock and metal which I seem to naturally just drift towards but I've got nothing against bands like Black Sabbath Foreigner George thorogood Metallica even though I will not be buying 72 seasons personally or death magnet. :-) but yeah I've been actually hauled off to the side and asked whether I'm underground or a pop lover a couple times now. Got a couple times of actually quoted Judas priest, I'm a rocker! I do as I feel as I say and no one can take that away!
I get it. I was one of those who found sleep token, before the 3rd album skyrocketed them into mainstream popularity. At first when I watched them getting larger gigs, I felt sad and a little annoyed at how everything was going. **My** band had suddenly been taken over by a bunch of ticktock thirst trap channels, that clearly hadn't even listened to the first half of "the summoning", let alone the rest of the album. Nobody got them like the old school guard did. But when stopping to think, I realised that for me, I missed that underground aesthetic. That I would likely never have that close up to the stage experience again without having to fight off thousands of people to get anywhere near the front. And you know what. If I have to give up that close knit feeling to see them become the global phenomenon for **anyone** to enjoy. Then that's fine by me.
I saw a post on a battlevest group of some guy at a gig that got his backpatch ripped of his vest because he couldnt name 5 songs.. if that aint elitism ..
I remember commenting on a post that many thrash bands cite iron maiden as an influence. Some guy said iron maiden copied led zeppelin. I innocently responded that they sound very different and he told me I was “objectively wrong” and then schooled me on some music theory. I’ve never wanted to slap someone so hard.
bottom line is, people take their tastes in music and personal subjective opinions on things WAYY too seriously in the metal community. metalheads are not as accepting as they always post about in memes 😭😭
@@Пэдро-д7ъ Part of any genres legacy is what comes after it and musical elitism is the most efficient way of killing any genre. Viewing taste in music as politics is vulgar. If black metal didn't evolve beyond the narrow confines of the second wave, we would never have got bands like Fleurety, Finntroll, Shining (Norway), or Ihsahn's solo output. @@nintendobinks792 Elitism has not and will not kill metal. It'll only keep its popularity in check, which is the point. More people making more things is not necessarily better. If this happens through commercialization in a genre that's against commercialization, it hurts the genre.

But yeah, never base your actions in the lives or thoughts of ither people, have your own thoughts abd be your own kind of person
Had a friend who was savagely jumped for saying “black metal sücks” to a group of guys all wearing black metal band hoodies back in the day. They used some choice words that let’s just say made it seem more like a targeted ATK. That was the point where I was like… ohhh this isn’t a cool or interesting subculture. Just another cult of close minded mean antisocial elitists. Obviously the genre as a whole isn’t inherently bad, but it’s inspired enough BS to warrant being roasted and turned into the punchline of the metal scene that it is.
Yeah, musically it's interesting and there's a lot of good stuff, but the fans can suck. And it's kind of a mine field of you want to avoid people who are a tad too far to the right of the political spectrum, let's say.
Using black metalheads as a representative of metalheads is like using a pdf file as a representative of men. Please don't ask me to elaborate just trust me.
I honestly think a certain level of gatekeeping has proven to be necessary in underground music. If the scene is too open, it invites A&R's to come and pillage it. That's how we got Scene kids from Hardcore and Emo (not 100% directly, as scene had a large Myspace component, but the link is there via hardcore being ripped off by Majors) And while I have nothing against the kids, the music that these majors put out (combined with fashion, as that how it works. they sell a whole package) directly hurts these smaller/underground scenes. The hardcore scene in particular was incredibly abrasive because of this. It's like if you have the nerve to show up alone, weather the crowd killing, maybe a broken nose or bust lip (if you actually decide to try and mosh) You'll be picked back up off the floor and in time you will be accepted. The gate keeping is simply a test to see if you're real or not. Ofc, this is a bit different to the "name 3 bands" attitude, but it stems from the same place of paranoia that the thing you love will be pillaged by someone like Malcom McLaren. That's what leads to insufferable pricks like Johnny Rotten, thinking he can tell the Ramones what punk is (I understand he was drunk and trolling, but still. it was hard to watch) PS: Skrillex and Dubstep is another prime example (I'm fully aware this is not "metal" LoL, but same applies) Now when you say "Dubstep" 90% of people think of the American crap (There is some good American stuff like "Kryptic Minds" but the Brostep-stuff came directly from the States) Skrillex and "Brostep" came about from A&R's going to DMZ at Mass in Brixton, or something. Keep these parasites away from your scene, unless you want it to become a laughing stock. The easiest way to do this is to make it as uninviting as possible to outsiders. It's less to do with the people in the scene being bad people, and more to do with the world we live in, and how artists have time and time again been prayed upon by major labels. Don't make it easy for them, at the very least.
I feel like at times, mostly online, that I come across as an elitist, probably because I enjoy Black Metal and have a lot of useless knowledge about the genre, but in person, I do my best to get more people into Metal as a whole. I am intelligent enough to know that most of society does not like Extreme Metal though, so I take the safe approach and show people Classic Metal, Speed Metal, and Power Metal, since in my humble opinion those styles of Metal can garner more appeal to "normies"
True. Common sense would suggest that most people who hear Burzum are going to assume it's made by escaped lunatics on crack. No offense but that's how it sounds to the uninitiated.
Didn’t we all start out as “Normies” at one point or another? Oh, or did you just instantly like metal and only metal? And it’s good that you’re trying to get more people into the genre, unfortunately, whether they choose to like it is up to them, but it’s good that you’re still trying all the same.
Great video. I was reading the comments section just now, and I guess that motivated me to give my two cents on metal elitism, especially since the video is fairly new and my comment isn't doomed to an immediate burial. From pretty much the very beginning, individuality has been a core tenant of metal music, and for me personally I just don't like to see metal become extremely commercial as metal is often losing something there. I think it's cool if you like Metallica or Slipknot, I think they're solid bands, but I'm always a bit disappointed when that's the only metal that some people will listen to. I may be wrong, but I get the impression that there are a lot of people who listen to super popular bands like those and are unwilling to listen to heavier or more underground bands because they just don't care that much about the music. Additionally, those people aren't really thinking for themselves and developing their own music taste; they're just listening to whatever is topping charts. And I guess that's fine, I'm sure they're still decent people, but they're listening to metal in kind of an impassionate way. I think gatekeeping has its place in metal, because it ensures that the people who are there are really there for the music. Inaccessible genres, especially black metal, really succeed in making sure that people who are there are people who genuinely care about the music and aren't people trying to appropriate the aesthetic or some advertiser trying to get their grubby hands on the music to seem hip, cool, or edgy. Don't get me wrong, though, there are some elitists and gatekeepers who can be total assholes. I've seen people shitting on bands like Mysticum and saying "never tolerate industrial black metal!!!" like, no, fuck off dude. I think gatekeeping should be less about keeping the music itself pure (it's okay for genres to mix) and more about keeping the fans pure. I've said this like three times now but as long as you're there for the music then you're totally fine. Fuck anyone who tells you otherwise. In the spirit of being an individual, I think experimentation is a good thing, and I can really respect artists that are willing to try something new. I am a big black metal fan, and while Deafhaven might not be my cup of tea (I actually enjoyed Sunbather but still, I prefer more traditional bm), I respect what they're doing, and I don't think them seeing a little bit of commercial success is a big deal. I dislike commercial music because it's often bland and formulaic, but if an album that's genuinely experimenting makes it to the top, then I think that success is something that should be celebrated. Anyway, this might just be repeating exactly what the video said or might just come off as some unhinged tangent. I actually had this post like twice as big as it is now and the second half was just about black metal, but I didn't wanna come off as *too* much of a basement dweller so yeah 🤘
You pretty much summed up my thoughts on gatekeeping. Keeping the fanbase pure, not the music. It's like the debate that people have on what makes someone a poser - it's not them listening to a certain band, it's if they barely listen to the music and are just pretending to like Metal (or any music) for the image of it. And don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with people liking an aesthetic, I just think that you should make that clear instead of trying to belong to a group that you just don't.
This just translates into: Please tell me I'm important and needed Nah, gatekeepers metal is pathetic and no one apart from your jackoffs think you're important

As a somewhat Metal elitist, I don’t care if the mainstream likes something “new” to them (like the Stranger Things X Metallica thing) but I do hate it when people who have no business wearing band shirts while thinking they’re just a brand or a style, but there’s been times where I’ve been outdone and been called a poser many times so I’m basically two sides of the coin really.
Is it bad if i get annoyed at the preteens on tiktok that worship certain bands? im not sure if its metal elitism, but im really annoyed with the persistence of the favourite band copy-and-paste list (metallica, megadeth, soad, rammstein, korn, mayhem, deftones) and them acting like they listen to the most obscure and dark music out there. On the other side i really dislike actual elitists too, especially deathsters,
@@Dimitris_Half my question would be do they actually enjoy the music? Like do they listen to it on their own time? Or is it just something they see as popular, or something that can get them more likes and views, and they’re not actually getting invested in it? If it’s the former, then cool. If it’s the latter, then I can see the original commenters point.
Yeah, to be fair, it's important to have some patience with kids because everybody's got to start out somewhere. No one jumps head-first into Gorgoroth, they usually get there from something far more palatable "to the masses". It's a process. I came from a background where no one in my family or closer acquaintances liked rock or metal, so I had to dive in there on my own (although my older brother did have some influence there). Usually people start with what they know and is accessible, which are the more mainstream artists. When I was 10yo I swore up and down that Guns N' Roses would be my favorite band for life, but as I grew older and felt the need to experiment, I discovered several metal subgenres and really found myself in the folk metal scene within maybe 2 years of starting that self-discovery journey as a teen. Granted I still like GN'R at 25, they definitely don't figure amongst my top 10 favorites anymore. But they were a good entryway into the rock scene and later into metal, so there is a lot of value to bigger bands like them, and I think the same applies to that list of bands in the previous comments. As to whether these tiktok kids will remain in the scene as they grow older, or choose to leave, is really no one's business but their own. They have to go through the self-discovery process of adolescence and see if it makes sense to them or not just as we all had.
Black Metal does have a lot of elitism but I honestly think Prog gives it a run for its money. I know it’s anecdotal but the single most obnoxious metal head I ever knew was a huge Dream Theater fan and would straight up say “what’s the point of listening to this? The musicians are no where near as good as Mike Portnoy” to literally anything other people would play around him.
Prog metal elitists are a hilarious idea if only because bands like Ayreon are literally more cheesy and hammy than all the power metal I've heard combined.
I'm kinda pro-gatekeeping when it comes to hobbies and media cultures. There's a difference between "growth" and "change", and i'm not exactly keen on landing on a "i used to be with it, but it is someting else now" scenario. "Poser" is a term long forgotten but I think it should be brought back to be used against the people who are posers. Its no big deal if you're just new to the scene and are just browsing, but if you're not even willing to explore and are just calling yourself a metalhead for listening to those one or two Linkin Park songs? Yeah. Big difference.
Was being a "poser" actually a common behaviour though? Genuinely? I mean those 19 year old women who were listening to those 2 Nightwish tracks and wearing a black costume to the rock bars, the guy who liked Blind Guardian's Battlefield because it was in that unicorn game and the guy who thought master of puppets had a super cool guitar riff and rocked out to Lamb of God at 1am at the local rock nightclub without knowing anything else did exist, sure but were these people really adopting the "metalhead" label in reality? Were they actually, legitimately treading on your toes? Because I used to talk to these people back in the day and 99% of the time they weren't owning the label, they just liked a bit of the rock umbrella and dug the aesthetic and they were young people giving their identity some experimentation. I just found it weird how the elitists had to other people like this. Especially when to the true normies, to your 35 year old guy in pastel colours who drives a Ford Focus Estate, has a baby and a middle manager's job- Yeah, to him Children of Bodom, LLN, Bolt thrower, Cradle of Filth, Burzum, trivium? Yeah, it all just sounds like shitty noise from his perspective. Oh, and the guys who were in their 40s and 50's and had actually been to thrash gigs and old school death metal shows back in the 80's and 90's? Yeah, they all used to take the piss out of the metal elitists. It's funny how the people in their Drudkh shirts who talked about "posers" never realised this back in the day...
Gatekeeping / elitism has its place, and I kind of don't care really. When a band or artist does something new and it works, that's good, too. When people or groups latch on to something that they haven't built and cultivated, then demand that thing changes to suit their sensibilities, they can go swing, and that's why elitism exists.
@@metalheadjake3339I have been part of two clubs that were ruined and disbanded because outsiders came in, and demanded we change the rules to suit them. If someone doesn't like how things are done, then they're completely free to go off and start their own thing.
Even with the background given to me by your video (good one btw) I always found the clique-like mentality of many metal fans really bizarre mostly because of the focus on individuality in the genre. The mob mentality runs incredibly counter to everything it was originally founded on like freeing yourself from the shackles of societal conventions. It’s a weird case of doublethink.
That would only be true if everyone had the same opinion, people will vastly disagree as for what subgenres/bands are metal good etc. What is societal conventions is to just push everyone to except every band ever as good and metal (with the exception of the ones that are offensive to the current/trendy political beliefs) haha
Punk is even worse with this kind of mentality. They hate the idea that people with different political and social beliefs like the genre. I like punk music, but I can’t stand the sub culture.
On one hand art should be as free as possible and gatekeeping interferes with experimentation. On the other hand show business turns art into a shallow attraction for profit. So I'm kinda centrist on the topic of gatekeeping.
Black metal is honest and raw. It's an open expression of torment and hate. I'll trade some production quality if it makes things more bleak and dark. Does it sometimes go too far into 'recorded on a potato' territory? Absolutely, but I'd take that over the million Meshuggah-esque bands that have not, and likely will not ever do it as well as they do.
This story about metal elitism reminds me of what happend with the hardcore gabber sub culture in the 1990 when commercialism killed the scene and made it go underground again.
Glad you didn't become a 25+ year old man writing essay comments on reddit/RUclips comment sections on why you're actually very important to the metal genre.
Man.. the visuals in these videos really make them entertaining. You really nailed it on the subject of black metal. I am guilty of once being a metal elitist in the thrash and death metal days.. I suppose I still can be at times. I’m definitely more accepting these days but some stuff out there just shouldn’t exist.
I have seen many death metal elitist be just as bad and hating on certain bands that are tech death and saying they're not real death metal. I have seen some power metal elitists before which is really funny because it's the cheesiest metal genre. We also see metalcore and deathcore having their own elitists. I know some who are gatekeeping certain bands and saying they're not metalcore or not deathcore. They really love bullying people out of music. I instead like to help people. I remember how elitists treated me when i was younger so i never wanted to be like them. If you don't like something then don't listen to it but if someone else likes it then leave them alone. I saw someone who was afraid of admitting to liking Babymetal because they don't want to be called a poser. Just like what you want, don't let these poor hygiene losers dictate your music tastes.
You said it very right. I've had my experience with metal elist in high school. I've been called a poser before all because I was into nu metal during my high school years. And those kind of people are very toxic, negative, hateful, bitter, delusional, dysfunctional, and just narrow minded. I listen to whatever I want and don't care what people think of me. I love country and metal music!
4:40 I think people partake in elitism because they seek a culture of their own & get tribalistic about it, not wanting it to become a place that would also reject them as they have been rejected many times before. People seek to defend its authenticity too, even though those efforts are often fruitless due to their obnoxious inefficient methods.
I gotta agree with you on the end there particularly. Seeing numerous genres both within and without of metal popping off lately really does show that good music is stronger than ever.
So in other words; metal elitists are people who fall victim to self-convincing arguments that only work within a paradigm that only they believe exists. In other words, they strawman metal as a genre to make themselves be the hero in their own story. Where as most people outside this bubble these days don’t actually give a shit about most of this and care more about how the music makes them feel. If it “feels” metal, whatever that is, typically popular opinion will categorise it as metal with the exception of extreme outliers like Heilung. But even then, it doesn’t stop them from being brought up in metalhead circles. I think the biggest spotlight that displays the bullshit of this worldview is the mere existence of groups like Babymetal. Personal tastes aside, despite how authentic they are with a vast number of big names in the industry vouching for them (never mind their cult following), elitists are so hell bent convinced by their own anti-corporate bias, these “consumers” have the audacity and hubris to flat out insult and ad hominem every entrepreneur in the industry who dares to contradict their stance. It’s a self fulfilling argument on it’s own, which only becomes an annoying cliche to so many like myself today. Metal elitists are the evangelicals of the modern metal scene.
Ugh, I’m a metal head and I have to say I’m afraid you hit the nail on the head with this video. The elitists you describe make me want stop listening to metal altogether sometimes.
I'm a black metal elitist. Now, I don't go out of my way to criticise people who listen to other forms of metal. I don't mind blackgaze at all, I've even listened to Sunbather, some Alcest albums, etc and have thought that they're alright. What grinds my gears is the "new fans", who discovered Mayhem or Burzum through TikTok, listened to 1-2 songs and say "Yup I'm a metalhead", yet refuse to listen to anything else. I think it's great to experiment with your sound as a band, and I'm all for it. Experiment with black metal. It's not a formula you have to follow in order to make good music, play with it. It's art, not industrially produced shit. What I hate is posers. People who clearly aren't metalheads but call themselves that. No, metalcore, deathcore, nu, and other stuff like that are NOT metal. It's fine to listen to it, but you cannot call them metal, since they're not. To sum up, listen to whatever the fuck you want, experiment with your music as an artist, stay open-minded, use the genres appropriately and support the underground.
i agree with you but some metalcore and nu metal can be closer to metal, slipknot for example, also head (the guitarist) from korn was inspired from morbid angel, i could consider korns self titled metal to some degree
@ghostfacekurdkillah4147What exactly specifically makes them "Not Metal"? You don't have to be pidgeonheld into Death Metal, Thrash Metal or Black Metal to still be considered Metal.
Wait, if deathcore isn’t metal, does that mean that I can show stuff like Lorna Shore, Slaughter to Prevail, Whitechapel, Carnifex, and Breeding the Spawn to my friends who don’t listen to Metal, and they might like it? Cause, you know, it’s not Metal, so it should be fine...
@@mitochondriaman4798 I should’ve said that I was being a bit sarcastic, so that’s my bad.
Then that's fine by me.

elitism is everywhere, in every music genre not just metalheads, swifties are worse tho
That's what leads to insufferable pricks like Johnny Rotten, thinking he can tell the Ramones what punk is (I understand he was drunk and trolling, but still. it was hard to watch)
PS: Skrillex and Dubstep is another prime example (I'm fully aware this is not "metal" LoL, but same applies) Now when you say "Dubstep" 90% of people think of the American crap (There is some good American stuff like "Kryptic Minds" but the Brostep-stuff came directly from the States) Skrillex and "Brostep" came about from A&R's going to DMZ at Mass in Brixton, or something.
Congrats on the sponsorship man! I love you videos and its cool to know you're getting paid for it 🖤🤘☠

These two comments make more sense to me than pretty much any other I’ve seen in this comment section so far.
This just translates into: Please tell me I'm important and needed
Nah, gatekeepers metal is pathetic and no one apart from your jackoffs think you're important

They have to go through the self-discovery process of adolescence and see if it makes sense to them or not just as we all had.
love your videos. you have the best closing statements, you make some really great points.

Metal is not an ideology. If every fan had a different opinion, it would still be metal.
@@GlumpusMumpus Wise words…
Punk is even worse with this kind of mentality. They hate the idea that people with different political and social beliefs like the genre. I like punk music, but I can’t stand the sub culture.
Could you talk about the gothic metal-symphonic metal-power metal triumvirate?
On one hand art should be as free as possible and gatekeeping interferes with experimentation.
On the other hand show business turns art into a shallow attraction for profit.

It’s Better To Be An Elitist Than To Be A Poser, Cause At The End Of The Day, Only One Knows More
I have seen many death metal elitist be just as bad and hating on certain bands that are tech death and saying they're not real death metal.

@@mitochondriaman4798 I should’ve said that I was being a bit sarcastic, so that’s my bad. I’m pretty sure anyone I showed those bands to, wouldn’t care that it’s between metal and hard-core, they would probably think it’s just noise so they wouldn’t like it either way.
Oh, and for the record, I don’t listen to hard-core, so you’ve got me on that one.
Also, just to throw my opinion in here for whatever reason, Grand Declaration of War, and De Mysteriis Doom Satanas are tied for my two favorite mayhem albums. Go ahead and tell me I’m wrong, and that I’m not a real metalhead or whatever it is.

this can be said for any genre especially punk rock and hip hip/rap

We are Laibach
Oh wow so I guess I was in the minority when I thought that the so-called hair metal was just an extension of the classic rock sound and started grabbing bands specifically for the way they played. House of Lords and Giufria come to mind immediately.
that guy finn become so lame as a youtuber lately
Elitisms can have it’s merit with moderation
No it can't... at all
@@metalheadjake3339It can.
@@GlumpusMumpus No.. it can't. Its just to make useless unlikeable people feel like they are important
Elitests need social lives or to grow up.
Who likes these people? No wants them around, likes them or needs them. They are useless. Not needed.. at all.
Going around online telling people they aren't "Real fans" of stuff is werid and not needed in the slightest. Get a life
I am against elitism but kinda with it too
Having standards=bad and elitist

Music is subjective. Get over yourself jackoff or have a shower for once
condescendingly imposing your standards onto other people = behaviour that warrants criticism
The only band i will always hate on is five flavor fruit punch. They're very talented dudes, but they write such lame cheesey songs
"Trve Kvlt? why yes I am the occasional coolea enjoyer. how did you know?"
I don't know what trv kvlt is. Does it have anything to do with a psychopath called Euronymous trying to start a cult? I seem to remember they were using that term around that time.
Basically show a video of people throwing junk at Chester preforming a song from the One More Light album and that’s how Metal elitists are.
cool sponsorship intro
Here is a good description:
Metal elitists are just reddit mods.
Not trying to sound elitist here, but it doesn genuinely irritate me when someone wears a shirt for a band they've never listened to before, and then still refuses to listen to them.
Wait, if they’re wearing the shirt, why would they still refuse to listen to them? How does that work?
@@bMt5553 Because they just think the shirt "looks cool". They don't actually care about the band that's named on it.
@@treystewart731 ahh, now your point makes more sense. And yeah, I agree that that sounds completely ridiculous.
@@treystewart731eh who cares. It’s their money and they ain’t hurting anyone by not listening to the band on their shirt 🤷♂️
Perhaps. I got several clothes from the charity, one of them was a top from the anime Demon Slayer. I don't wear it in public otherwise they'll think I know something about this cartoon💀
3:46 Thank you so much for taking thrash to task on elitism. And honestly, that's why everyone got so pissed off at Metallica every time they "evolved." Guess what, you talk shit, you don't get to evolve. Just get faster and faster and then off to the gas station.
To be fair a healthy amount of elitism is needed, I mean not towards any another subgenre of metal, nor to any good music, just the cringey ones, for example Kpoop
you should make a video about prog rock, le red angry face, le giant, le no?
Hot take incoming. There needs to be more metal elitism, not less.
Worst take ever...
i think you should do a ignorant guide for pantera
Heavy metal as a genre is very broad and enclusive strangely and sadly it doesn't get the credit for that it and it's fan's can deserve.
Imagine actually being a metal elitist in 2024.
At least in the late 00's there wasn't much else on 18-30 year old people's minds. Considering the geopolitical state of the world, the cost of living issues, the constant partisan discourse across a huge range of topics etc if some 20 year old daring to wear a Burzum shirt while only knowing one song or someone posting that they're "SUCH a metalhead" because they like a Children of Bodom album is what occupies your mind then you probably need to reassess your priorities.
Few hate metalheads more than other metalheads
Thank you coolea, i think i will now download world of warships and pay for in game micro transactions
