Screaming was pretty popular in 80s and 90s Power Metal, probably because it was inspired heavily by Speed Metal(in Europe) and Thrash(in America)
Really a better question is why it started to be phased out during the 2000s?

Anti Cimex - Raped Ass (1983)
Neos - Hassibah Gets the Martian Brain Squeeze (1982)

My argument was to think of growls/gutterals to be the same as putting distortion on guitar.
And it's not as easy as "shouting" like some core band either. It takes talent, and some vocal styles are hard to replicate. So it gives it more merit.
Back in the 00s, whenever I was driving back from work, I would try to sing along with Carcass, totally destroying my throat. After about a year, it all smoothed over, and now I have nice Jeff Walker style cords.

Very early recording of black metalesque vocals was in 1969 by a band Cromagnon, on their song Caledonia.
Edit: another very old song that has a bit of growling is Bílé Světlo - Umělec. It’s just couple lines towards the end, but it fits really well with the song, in same way modern bands use harsher vocals for atmosphere.

Metal screaming had other alternatives like the growl or Cookie Monster voice, but I agree with the statement that an 11th century stage-play is what inspired this scream common in the bridge of songs from dark metal or death metal artists. Nu metal does the same albeit in a lesser extent unless if it's Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit, rather for that genre it's just yelling but not screaming(Rise Against The Machine is an example of this); the metal scream is more hellish whereas the opera wail is more heavenly, sorta like most of dark metal whether it's Gorgoroth, Lord Belial, Slayer, et cetera. I need a video on the goth subculture(as well as their contributions to pop punk, emo, nu metal, industrial and electro)asap!
