This was the best geek out I've ever had... The Deftones have lived in my heart for so long, but understanding a little of the technicality of what makes them who they are is so awesome. Thank you!
This was amazing, honestly, I'm Deftones obsessed and I wish I could force everyone to watch this so that they can understand why they are so incredible because it's not something you can put into words. Unless you're you I guess!
I know absolutely nothing about notes, chords, progression, or just simply the science and art behind music but I love your videos because it goes to show how unique these bands really are and how much thought and work goes into making their music. I imagine this is a great channel for those learning music and get inspiration for writing their own material.
Sorry for the extreme run on sentence in that comment. I wrote that comment when I was dead tired. If I could request a breakdown "How *insert name* Write A Song" ; it'd be nice to see something like Mudvayne, Stone Temple Pilots, Avenged Sevenfold, or new vs old Three Days Grace, or maybe even early any era of Cradle of Filth. Sorry if that's a lot of weird requests, but I listen to almost all music primarily Metal~Rock.
I'm just glad i wasn't in the middle of drinking anything, when i heard "a heavy-metal drummer, like Lars Ulrich". That would've spelt trouble for my nose and keyboard...
I fucking love the internet. I never thought anybody would give the time of day to deconstruct the Deftones work, but I'm glad you did as it really highlights some very interesting techniques. I do ponder whether the likes of Chino is consciously applying some music theory to his vocal melodies or whether it's just part of his subconscious style.
TLDR: Most songs arent hard to play but impossible to write like them This is why I love them. At first listen they seem a little simple(minimalistic) and in a way they are. If youve been playing guitar, bass, and/or drums for a bit like me and many people, their songs arent too hard to learn but if you tried to write a song with a similar structure itd be hard as hell. Also their combo of instrumental writing, vocals and rhythm make them complex but amazing.
I read somewhere that Deftones gets high and just plays some music. " do what we always do" - Stef carpenter in regards to writing Koi No Yokan. Whatever they do, its working haha
I think Frank Delgado is probably the most underrated band member. It's understandable because his role is so sutble, but to me it's a big part of their sound. You've Seen the Butcher is the perfect example of his handiwork. ^_^
This video really does a great job at showing the appeal of Deftones. Because it's how they do things differently than the typical mainstream rock band that made them stand out to me. And I've always felt that Chino had some of the most experimental melodies I have heard from a rock band.
And you know what the most mind blowing thing is? All the things that you broke down about the Deftones totally come instinctually to them. I bet Steph comes up with a riff, Abe writes a cool beat and Chino starts singing and to us it's this genius that we have to pick apart and analyze. To them it's just reflex. That's where I wanna be. Where style meets instinct.
David Alexander not as much as you think. Do you play in a band? I remember when my band opened for them years ago in Sacramento. I could tell they were real musicians and they def. Know theory.
Chad Allen oh I'm not saying they are not real musicians. If anything I'm saying they are real geniuses that have real talent and ability. I'm saying we break apart what that genius in an attempt to understand how it could come naturally to them.
David Alexander yeah... it’s true some people have more musical “talent” than other people but that doesn’t negate learning theory in one form or another. A band like that has applied at least some theory from the beginning. I’ve played in bands that just slapped together riffs without any knowledge of how they worked together. You can tell when theta happening. It can still be good but it has its own feel and sound.
THS IS SO FUCKING GOOD. You perfectly pieced out their song structure and how they're able to groove the way they do. I really want to be able to re-create this sound and vibe of metal but not quite metal. Metal with a softer side. God, I love this band so much.
The intro instrumentals and ethereal soundscape they created in “Hearts/Wires” is pure art. I can imagine myself staring out the balcony of a high rise building in the middle of a dystopian futuristic city like Cyberpunk/Blade Runner as the rain drops reflect the light off the neon signs on the buildings.
Man, this was fantastic. Bravo. Deftones are brilliant, brilliant musicians. My only issue with this video is that it ended too soon. I could watch this all night.
You should have mentioned MINERVA, from the self-titled album. He confronts the major chord singing a minor third on the first verse and keep doing that through the whole song and that bothered me a lot until I got used to their freakyness.
Ivan Carmona A major chord contains a major third a minor third would be one note below that the two notes are super close making clash when played together.
And exactly how can you identify what chord is being played considering how distorted and full-on the overall sound is? Not to mention the constant counterpoint between Chino's voice (monophonic!), Chino's guitar (polyphonic!), Carpenter's guitar (polyphonic!), Delgado's arsenal of samples, synths, etc. (polyphonic!). I am all ears, can't wait... :)
Great band, great video and hilarious editing! 🙂 Never thought about the combination of people making up the sound of the band with deftones, that's a very good observation
Jens Larsen Very good observation indeed. The interview of Stephen really highlighted the frustration and creativity that this situation implies. This band is very much an unstable formula... Should have exploded a while ago, but i think they appreciate how good they sound together.
Damien Delvallée That could be, at same time the deftones as a pure metal band or hiphop would probably not really be that interesting 🙂 At least I doubt that it would
I think thats something Korn also brings to the table. Their use of bass work as a percussive tool as well as when you start learning the guitar parts and realize how much every instrument plays off one another its crazy. Great chill series to watch here.
You chose some of my favorite tracks....this explains why they really get my adrenaline pumping. Its beautiful chaos complemented by Chino's dreamy/angsty vocal delivery.
I find it odd that the band itself doesn't like that record much....as it's one of my favorites from them. Then again, maybe a lot of that had to do with the accident their bassist had during that time...
@@avedic it's more due to the fact NO ONE in the band was getting along with each other so a lot of the lyrics Chino wrote during that time where about them. I think that combined with Chi's death it just makes them all want to stay away from them
Also Chino said in an interview that it was a drug fueled time that led to dark places. That's another reason he plays in a few other bands/projects, partially for recovery.
Loved the deftones since 98. Their White Pony album which defined their current sound was basically taken from the band Hum. The song "Little Dipper" by Hum, screams Deftones. Chino has mentioned this, so it's not new but it's crazy that a lot of Deftones fans don't know of Hum. The White Pony cover is an homage to Hum's "You'd prefer an Astronaut" album cover. ruclips.net/video/v6AK6iW4sHE/видео.html Keep in mind this came out the same year Adrenaline did. Which blows my mind. Great video. Love this channel.
timme20001 listen to "digital bath". My all time favorite. PS. "Knife party", "be quite and drive", "bloody cape". Also listen to Circa Survive - "stop the fucking car". You'll like that band as well
soooo good. I feel like Abe's style isn't exactly from him playing "light" but more from his use of groovy rhythm and ghost notes on his ting-y snare drum!
I feel like a psychiatrist just explained to me why I'm so crazy in love with Deftones as if they were an unobtainable woman. And I'm okay with how i feel now.
I would love to see vids on these bands in the future: Chevelle Incubus Red Hot Chili Peppers Death Cab For Cutie Hozier Thanks, and keep up the great work HS!
Amazing insights man! As a life long fan of the Deftones I can say this was illuminating and incredibly informative. Stef Carpenter was the reason I picked up a guitar for the first time and completely changed my outlook on how a riff could be presented as a stand alone piece or as a layer within a song. If you do another in depth dive on a band please take a look at Good Tiger. Those dudes have a really cool sound.
I was so glad to see Kimdracula get a mention, such an underrated song in their catalogue. It's been one of my go to Deftones songs ever since I heard it
The harmonies on Radio/Video, Question, Nuguns, Violent Pornography, Soldier Side. Then they snake around each other's vocals on Lost in Hollywood, P.L.U.C.K., and Dreaming. The guitar riffs on Peephole, Vicinity of Obscenity, Soil, Needles, Thetawaves and the bouncy clean riff on Highway Song. There's just so much to talk about with that band.
Love this! You sampled so many of my favourite songs of theirs (and not just the overplayed singles xP), showcasing and explaining why I love their music so much.
Nine Inch Nails! That’s for this one. Those of us fans who are experienced musicians hear the genius in Deftones music. You hit the nails on the head with the interplay between Chino, Steph, and Abe.
For years I've described Chino's lyrical writing as non-linear creating a series of emotions that together paint a scene, as opposed to simply creating a narrative like most lyricists do. You're the first person I've seen say pretty much the same thing.
I'm interested into how their more recent work fits into all this, especially Ohms. Chino's melodies sound more subdued than ever to me these days but it results in some really unique stuff like "Error" and "Urantia".
Like others I've been a Deftones fan for many many years. As a fan of music I can entertain myself with certain new bands/songs currently out. With plenty of cringe in my blunder years, it awesome to know that my interest in them was real. Knowing I've probably outgrown most of my past interest, I can always count on what I felt and still feel about the Deftones. For the most part we all feel like we have an understanding of who we are. All these years later I'm suppose to feel like an adult but then the Deftones will randomly sneak their way into my ears again (like this suggested video) and I'm happily reminded of who I really am. I'm still that lost teenager but I now allow myself to feel and find happiness in the small things like headbanging and singing along. I'l like to think that the Deftones has something to do with my humble state of mind. They give me a feeling of sonder and if I can continue to keep others, even strangers in my thoughts, then teenager me would probably be proud. Except in the money department. Teenager me would kick my ass if I knew I would be this broke.
Man, you're a genius. Thank you for the videos on this series. Completely made my week, I've had a bad time getting back on the songwriting van. Keep doing it!
what he did on beware turned me upside down i was speechless. not only do his melodies make you go wtf but the way he plays out rhythms and lands his syllables makes him one of the most unique rock artists ive ever heard
Dang, I truly wish I understood music theory the way this guys describes it. I know he put hours and hours into his research and theories before presenting it to the world, but it seems smooth and 2nd nature describing Deftones music in technical music terminology to this guy. This is very interesting because the music dissected here is that of Deftones who are kings at going against the grain of what your brain thinks its going to hear vs what actually happens. Im always in awe of Deftones making sort of "simple" songs, but very complex at the same time. Their music is almost like a paradox in itself. Long live Deftones-one of the best heavy rock/metal bands of all time.
Damn! I was ready for a part 2! This was a treat to watch! Deftones are my favorite band. I've never really had anyone articulate technically why the Deftones sound so awesome! I'm hoping for a part 2!
Love that you've shifted to rock bands for this season! I'd love to see Nine Inch Nails, Incubus, Paramore, Queens of the Stone Age, or if you're looking for a challenge, Opeth and Porcupine Tree. Thanks for the great videos!
Hey Friedemann, I've fallen in love with your series as a fellow musician! I was wondering if you would consider making an episode about Slipknot; Corey Taylor is the reason I started playing my first instrument and wanted to learn how music 'works.' Even though I am more of a jazz musician now, metal will always be my first love and one of my biggest influences. It would be interesting, for example, to see songs like Vendetta broken down; where the blues scale is employed for the vocal part in a metal song. Thanks for putting a lot of effort into these episodes!
I play a lot of deftones on my guitars and a lot of the things you’ve said is the same thing I think when I play their music. Makes me happy I think the same as a musical expert as your self. :)
I'm so glad I found this video! I'm a huge fan of Deftones and I agree on the points you've outlined. It'd be great if you did The Dillinger Escape Plan, I think there's a lot that could be said and if anyone should say it, it should be you! :)
Awesome video! It was nice to have a fan explain how to appreciate a band I don't particularly care for. I learned a lot. Also, I wanna hear your take on how Modest Mouse writes a melody.
First video i’ve seen by you. My adhd was actually drowned out from so much interest. It didn’t even feel like a 20min video. This is tremendously structured, and it doesn’t take a music theorist to be able to understand everything. Thank you!
Just discovered your home here, and I love it. Just what I’ve been in the mood for. I was going to suggest one of the Deftones biggest influences, who are one of my all time faves: HUM, though I know you’re probably looking to analyze more well-known acts. But here’s your chances to shine some light. Keep up the amazing work. Truly top notch.
I remember identifying the "half chorus" as a teaser of the whole chorus in Korn's two first albums. I'm positive that was Ross Robinson's direct influence on the structure of the tracks (I caught him doing the same with the infamous The Cure album he produced and At The Drive-In's as well). I'm afraid that became kind of a "cool" trend in the mid 90's, structure wise. Thank God Deftones kept defying expectations album after album, song structure- wise.
The element of surprise is what I really love about The Deftones and they keep doing it even on later albums. I remember recently listening to "Koi No Yokan" for the first time and being floored when "Goon Squad" kicked in or the soaring choruses "Leathers" and "Poltergeist" just to name a few examples. Simply amazing. Great video. I'm really digging what you're doing on this channel. Keep it up. Subscribed!
Honestly, seeing these guys live is lie a whole new experience. You know it’s going to be amazing but when it happens it’s completely euphoric and you find yourself getting put into a trance like state.
I love deftones. Their sound feels like the love I will never know. Instead of feeling low, you can turn the longing into a dreamy melody. Like alchemy. Sadness becomes the precious exploration into the unknown. She is my mistress
You just gave me so many tattoo ideas. I'm forever grateful. A very huge fan of Deftones since as far back as i had ears toward music. A band I never wanna see retire
I just discovered your channel while looking for advice on songwriting and I find this "Artist Series" really interesting. Maybe one day you could touch on more modern metal bands? Like Periphery, Tesseract, Plini, Skyharbor and the like. Or maybe more avant-garde bands such as Dir En Grey.
Deftones are defiantly a listen to on headphones band, To truly listen to them in depth you need to be surrounded by their music.
You are so right!
I have to say I agree with you. It helps the immersion.
IDoNotSow absolutely. To dissect each element of the song and how each of them are doing their own thing. It all just melds and flows. I’ve always been in awe with how against the grain they are with your standard song writing. So unorthodox and different. The emotional flow just reverberates through your soul. But try to explain that to a normal person.
I think i shit my pants the first time i heard the bloodcurdling screams on Knife Party with a good set of headphones on
I'd say it's pretty good to blast when you're alone in the car. I think Koi No Yokan hasn't left my car for years.
KImdracula is one of the most underrated Deftones songs ever. Thank you for using it in this vid
Thinking the same thing!
Best song on that album
if people are getting into their sound, they just can't dismiss songs like Kimdracula, Beware and 976 Evil.
Love 976-Evil. Nobody ever mentions that song.
@ad the band it self calls that period the dark days...
"First we have Chino Moreno, whose vocals sound like he's about to climax"
🤣😂💀💀💀
Giggidy!
That line made me laugh lmao
hearing it makes you ☺
Hit the nail on the head! Wow! Lol I always wondered what it was that made me... just... MMMM! Lmao! Helps me put Deftones into perspective! Lol
Deftones is one band that makes you feel melancholia and joy at the same time
Sextape is one of my favorite songs by them because it has a sense of not only a sexual tension but a sense of romantic, nocturnal longing. It speaks of a temporary, yet fading high.
I love this song so much!
Absolute favorite song of all time. It's the epidomy of summertime nights but at the same can fit into any time of the year. From love to loneliness. Undoubtedly an amazing work of art. But that's my opinion lol ;)

It’s my favorite late night driving song
There is not a moodier metal band than Deftones. These guys are incredible.
This was the best geek out I've ever had... The Deftones have lived in my heart for so long, but understanding a little of the technicality of what makes them who they are is so awesome. Thank you!
Well said. Geek out, but so we’ll done, intelligent and insightful.
Check out nik nocturnals "how to write a deftones song" video. Pretty amazing
The subtlety of frank delgado is brilliant. A secret sauce that amplifies certain vibes and emotions in the songs.
This was amazing, honestly, I'm Deftones obsessed and I wish I could force everyone to watch this so that they can understand why they are so incredible because it's not something you can put into words. Unless you're you I guess!
Simon Burford I agree but I also think this is just a technical explanation and their music just needs to be experienced.
This comment makes me ashamed to be a Deftones fan.
Simon Burford yes! I know right! Lol
I know absolutely nothing about notes, chords, progression, or just simply the science and art behind music but I love your videos because it goes to show how unique these bands really are and how much thought and work goes into making their music. I fucking love the internet. I never thought anybody would give the time of day to deconstruct the Deftones work, but I'm glad you did as it really highlights some very interesting techniques. Yeah he really brings some atmosphere and ambience definitely to the table
Deftones won't be Deftones without Frank's work.
Can’t forget how impactful chi was on the sound too

Yeah, I doubt the idea of singing upper structures comes without theory knowledge.
this does not come naturally to them at all, maybe to a jazz musician it would. and its obvious when listening to them,
I wish this were longer as it was so good. I could watch a deconstruction of their methods and approach all day. Thank you!
THS IS SO FUCKING GOOD.

System of a Down uses half choruses a lot, in Chop Suey and BYOB for example. They'd be a great band to analyze too ;)
Man, this was fantastic. Bravo. Deftones are brilliant, brilliant musicians. My only issue with this video is that it ended too soon. I could watch this all night.

Automatic unthinking thumbs up. Sweet. Good job. Excellent critical thinking.
I would actually listen to that just out of curiosity
Beautiful, the fleeting nature of it. Perfectly captured. Someone articulated it finally
Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson next, please
This please!
Hohhhh, goodluck dissecting that
*THIS!!!*
I would describe them as powerful, hypnotic, with a much more melodic singer than this style of music usually presents.
Can you do System of A down? They have some great harmonic and structural things in their songs.
Yes please!
This would be amazing! I'm sure there's lots going on to discuss theoretically, and their structures and progressions leave a lot to be discussed
yes they do especially on albums like hypnotize and memorize
Rick Beato has a video on Chop Suey
You hit the nails on the head with the interplay between Chino, Steph, and Abe.
please never forget Chino's love for the 9th step at many chords ;)
thanks for the video! definitely makes me re-listen to all Deftones
Nearly every time you said "The deftones" I wanted to say "It's deftones, not the deftones" Great video though.
The Radiohead
YES! You absolutely nailed it.
Man, you're a genius. Thank you for the videos on this series. Completely made my week, I've had a bad time getting back on the songwriting van. Keep doing it!
Hell yeah, glad you made a video about them. Cheers, man!
what he did on beware turned me upside down i was speechless. not only do his melodies make you go wtf but the way he plays out rhythms and lands his syllables makes him one of the most unique rock artists ive ever heard
I've been dying for one of these. It's come out the day before my birthday, excellent surprise!
This is definitely one of my top five favorite bands
Damn! I was ready for a part 2! This was a treat to watch! Deftones are my favorite band. I've never really had anyone articulate technically why the Deftones sound so awesome! I'm hoping for a part 2!
Maybe the White Stripes? They have lots of interesting marketing to cover- plus, I'd love to understand how such simple music can be so overwhelming!
Thanks for putting this together! Deftones is my favorite band of all time. Can't wait for another U.S. tour!!
Tbh never seen a video by you, but I'm so glad I did!! Love deftones. Subbed :P
Thanks for putting a lot of effort into these episodes!
big deftones fan here! browsed your other content. you, sir, have just earned another subscriber.
This Place Is Death is easily their most underrated song. It’s one of my favorites!
Agreed :)
Dustin Clark yes, yes it is.....
This band is a huge part of my life since 96. Thanks for helping me enjoy them even more.
NOW THAT YOU BRING THAT UP, ABE'S DRUMMING DOES ADD GROOVE BY NOT BEING NON-METAL.
The riff for hexagram is amazing. So creative, one of my favorite Stephen riffs.
I play a lot of deftones on my guitars and a lot of the things you’ve said is the same thing I think when I play their music. Makes me happy I think the same as a musical expert as your self. :)
I kinda wish he'd talked about how Frank Delgado's creates lush gorgeous soundscapes and how that's integral to the band's sound
I'm so glad I found this video! I'm a huge fan of Deftones and I agree on the points you've outlined. It'd be great if you did The Dillinger Escape Plan, I think there's a lot that could be said and if anyone should say it, it should be you! :)
Always come back to your videos when I need some inspiration, thank you for these
Awesome video! It was nice to have a fan explain how to appreciate a band I don't particularly care for. I learned a lot.
Also, I wanna hear your take on how Modest Mouse writes a melody.
Never realized just how much Abe's drumming changes adds to it. Amazing video man.
Failure would be awesome. I put them up there with Tool
Yeah they've got a real distinct style/sound and use some cool chords
First video i’ve seen by you. My adhd was actually drowned out from so much interest. It didn’t even feel like a 20min video. This is tremendously structured, and it doesn’t take a music theorist to be able to understand everything. Thank you!
Can you do Queen? I would love to see you do an episode for such a diverse band.
Truly top notch.
pls don't forget James Blake!
And, damn, this should be a TV show :D
I second both of those comments
Deftones music makes me feel validated and seen. Like they understand!
Thank God Deftones kept defying expectations album after album, song structure-
wise.
Keep it up. Subscribed!
Love the videos!
I think Queens of the Stone Age or Nine Inch Nails would make for an interesting video
NIN!
Yes! Was looking for Queens of the Stone Age in the comments!
Honestly, seeing these guys live is lie a whole new experience. You know it’s going to be amazing but when it happens it’s completely euphoric and you find yourself getting put into a trance like state.
He used the article "The" for Deftones as a particular subject, (The Deftones) but not as a literal band's name.
I love deftones. Their sound feels like the love I will never know. Instead of feeling low, you can turn the longing into a dreamy melody. Like alchemy. Sadness becomes the precious exploration into the unknown. She is my mistress
Dude, your videos are so good.
You just gave me so many tattoo ideas. I'm forever grateful.
A very huge fan of Deftones since as far back as i had ears toward music.
A band I never wanna see retire
...Is asking for a BEATLES episode a bit too much? I'd give an eye to watch it! (...with the other eye)
Silver Fox yes we need a Beatles episode
We'd need several Beatles episode, but I couldn't ask for that much :)
