Vitaminins, minerals, and herbal supplements completely changed my life. I started a few things at the request of my primary physician and neurologist. My blood results and quality of life improved drastically. I discovered that if I stopped or decreased my regimen, my labs would start to become abnormal again. That's when I did research to start a personalized supplement routine and begin titrating off some meds I was dependent on. Just wish I had started much sooner!
Exactly. Same here. Without my supplements I still would be very, very sick... Unfortunately most doctors are not yet sufficienty trained on that matter... But the information is all available on RUclips, all you have to do is invest a little time...
@tnpm718 Unless big pharma suddenly takes a liking to supplements, that will unfortunately never change. =/ Cracks me up when people argue with me saying vitamins/minerals don't actually do anything 😂

@@RedRoseSeptember22 they don't force you to take medications. If you come in with a problem, and there's a drug that will treat it, they'll prescribe it for you. That's kind of part of their job you know. And it's irrelevant that doctors tell you it's pointless to take supplements, what matters is _scientists_ say it's pointless - at least, in most cases. These supplement companies prey on people's ignorance. People get drawn to supplements because they think 'natural' means 'safer,' which it doesn't. Natural vs unnatural chemicals are still chemicals, and they may or may not be safe. The difference between drugs and supplements is pretty simple: the former have been proven to work and tested for safety, the latter haven't.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 Can we just let this myth die? Cause that's literally the argument of EVERY supplement peddling asshole on the internet. The difference is obsessing over taking them Or obsessing over people not taking them if there isn't a need... I take melatonin because I really can't sleep most nights but there's a reason of I was just taking them to get a "better" nights sleep that would be obsessing but I literally don't sleep without it... I understand where Dr. Mike is coming from, I never took vitamins as a kid or without reason... (i also dont get a flu shot tho...)

I mean, I am probably not deficient in any vitamins. However, when I take my suppliments my hair grows, my skin clears up, and I feel MUCH better. Even if its placebo... I'll take it because it works for me.
There are studies that have used multivitamins (a LOT, and every single micronutrient) in the treatment of ADHD, Bi-Polar, and Depression. Studies showed they were very effective both short and long term! Just been on a 7 week course of flooding my body with Vit D (doctor prescribed!) I was so deficient it wasn’t even on the chart 😢 I felt awful. Aches, pains, fatigue, low mood. Vit D levels are just within the normal range now and I feel SO much better than I did before 😁💪🏻

I can agree multi vitamins can most likely not help. But I disagree with certain things your saying. I know there's beef between functional medicine and conventional medicine but It's crazy how you think most people get all the vitamins that is required to not have a deficiency and in AMERICA of all places. Vitamin D and zinc and potassium are one of the most deficient vitamins out there. And just because you can get these vitamins from foods doesn't necessarily mean it's process in your body correctly aswell and or it's from a good source. I guarantee you almost everyone in this country has or will have a bad gut issue that has been proven to give vitamin deficiencies that leads to emotional and mental disorders just to name a few examples. So yes it is necessary to use supplements specially if you don't consume what your suppose to eat. Conventional medicine bloodwork doesn't fully show all vitamin deficiencies btw... essentially you won't really need to take vitamins if you know what you're consuming but odds are people can't afford quality foods or don't simply know how to nourish themselves properly.

I love how you simplified this topic for your audience PERFECTLY! As a Dietitian Nutritionist, I definitely see people (most notably influencers) treating supplements as if they’re magic cures, or that they’re 100% legit even if it’s a brand new company with zero creditability and transparency. There’s definitely risks with taking supps - like quality, purity, and does-it-contain-what-it-says in the quantity that it says. My rule of thumb - only supplement when there’s a true need. And find a GMP certified brand that’s ultra transparent about their ingredients!
I couldn't agree more! Well said. I have as a long time competitive athlete believed in certain supplements but was always cautious of their sourcing and production. And why I finally settled on one brand and company.
@@karrenpopovics2780in my case its Kirkland multivitamins. Its cheap but certified by “USP” But if you want to get it naturally you basically have to be a nutritionist otherwise you’ll definitely be deficient. People le vegetarians for example think they are healthy because of veggies and fruits but could potentially lack vitamins b12 and e which are important to the body as they are mostly from meat. You cant just say you have a balanced diet because you have fruits and veggies, you have to study what kind of fruits and veggies your taking and how you cook them.
@@karrenpopovics2780how you cook them is also important like for example boiling mushrooms actually remove its nutrients. Microwaving them funnily enough is a healthier way to cook them. Grilling is also good to retain its nutrients

I take vitamin D but that’s only because I’ve always had a deficiency, I have to get my levels tested once a year to make sure my levels are still okay with the supplement
Same! I wasn't even aware that my levels were low until a year ago when I took a blood test and it came back as well... very very lacking of vitamin D. I think 30 out of the recommended level of 120. Micrograms I think? Honestly I don't keep track. I just know that I feel better now that I take 50 micrograms a day (took 100 for the first 6 months).
FYI, most probiotics that aren't refidgerated are garbage. Studies have shown that most all room temp probiotics have less than 10% of the CFU they say they originally have.
My doctor has me taking probiotics because of some health issues :) so far I feel great with the ones I'm taking. Fish oil is also amazing for the joints and heart!!!
Kind of the same: if the doctor prescribed them, they may help. If you take them on your own, probably you don't need them. Calcium can actually hurt you (my aunt had spasms in her hands and nervousness) so your doctor needs to prescribe the exact dose, which can or cannot be the one in the label.
Yeah, but how often do doctors suggest a vitamin to cure anything? If they run tests and you're clearly deficient in something, they'll tell you to take a vitamin, but they hardly ever recommend vitamins for injuries or illnesses. They always try to prescribe you something instead.
Are you supplementing by a doctor's recommendation? You'll usually get prescribed the strong tablets, that make you poop black lead lol... Even on 100mgs daily, it'll take a good while to bounce back from an iron deficiency. From personal experience, several weeks.
Thor Odinson I do go to the gym regularly and I did my blood test not too long ago and I’m fine the iron is increasing a little but I can’t feel the difference 😕
Cathrine Lundqvist I’m taking the 80 mg ones and at first he told me to take it twice a day and now that I went from 8 to 17 I am taking it only once a day and I’ve been taking it for 5 moths so I hope to feel good asap
I was recommended to take a vitamin C tablet along with the iron to help with effectiveness. I had the same problem as you, with not feeling any better after about two months. Luckily, vitamin C is water soluble, so it can’t hurt you. Maybe talk to your doctor about it.
Oh youre so right. I have just been down a YT rabbit hole looking at all this new information about NMN, TMG etc for anti ageing pathways and arrived here finally after realising I don't need to take anything. Just fast and my body will take care of it all.
86% has been taking a vitamin supplement, while only 24% had a deficiency. Doesn't that just tell you the vitamin has solved the deficiency? How do you know the other 62% wasn't deficient before they started taking supplement?
I take a multi-vitamin for a few reasons. One, I don't eat veggies. I hate them with a passion and nearly vomit any time I try to eat one. Second, I've got a stomach condition that makes it where I can only eat very small portions which can lead to me feeling super short of breath sometimes to the point where my vision starts to go. I 100% agree with Dr. Mike on most of this. But, if you feel better taking a multi-vitamin and can afford it, go for it. It's a no-risk situation. Like wearing a mask during COVID. It can't hurt, can only help.
You should review Tati Westbrook's vitamins. The name is Halo Beauty and there was a controversy when she first launched then because of some ingredients. Her subscribers thought she was going to launch make up or skin care so when she presented vitamins people went crazy.
(Nothing in this response is intended as a retort to you, since you didn't state a case either way about her product. I'm just replying about the general topic and speaking to general trends.) Tati's formulation for Halo Beauty is actually really well thought-out and fairly in line with research on the various components (JenLuvsReviews did, as usual, an incredible breakdown analysis of it). A lot of people want to dismiss literally anything in a pill form as being pointless cash-grab fluff, but that's as irrational as making generalizations about All Pharmaceutical Drugs or about All Surgical Remedies or whatever other toolboxes are available for issues. A big problem is that a lot of people think "supplements" and "vitamins" mean the same thing, but they definitely don't. There are lots of other compounds that *aren't* vitamins that people supplement for useful effect, and there are certain vitamins that do have useful properties when taken in greater than necessary dietary amounts, and there's nothing wrong with that, but so many people are quick to dismiss that possibility and they end up making ignorant criticisms because of it. Inositol is a B-vitamin sugar but megadoses of it are downright miraculous for many people with autism/OCD/similar cognitive problems, for instance. Alpha lipoic acid is the only thing keeping my nervous system from feeling on fire all the time. These are just a couple of examples, but the point is that I think most people really don't give supplementation an objective and even-handed look, they just want a quick generalized answer for whether it's dumb or not, and nothing in healthcare/biology is that simple.
Probably that it's very improbable for someone that eats as much meat as a typical American to be protein deficient in any way and that too much protein can cause a lot of damage. It's like eating 5 potatoes in a sitting because you've got to get your carbs... I mean, yeah, you can, but is it really necessary?

I know loads of people follow her and take this supplement. It's 40 bucks for a one month supply. Curious if people might just be wasting their hard earned dollar!? Thanks doc!!
I'm not him, BUT, "It's a hair, skin, and nail booster" Nothing you'll get from these pills you couldn't get from a healthy diet. You can only absorb a certain amount of vitamins and minerals before the rest is just passed on through, so chances are yes, you'd be wasting your money
Eat right, add a little Jello if your nails are weak (how I stopped biting mine, too tough to enjoy)..enjoy yummy good food and don't fall for the nex big craze, I'll eat a Double Down but still keep fibre in most of my meals...talk to your body, mine loves butter, coconut oil, and water! Maybe create a picture or chart to see what foods have what minerals or vitamins..hemp hearts can cover Many of the body requirements!..it's hemp, not pot! If it had any useful thc, I would have eaten all of mine!
Her formulation is actually really well thought-out and backed by research, and there are useful therapeutic quantities of nearly all the ingredients. JenLuvsReviews did an amazing ingredient-by-ingredient complete breakdown and analysis of the formula, so definitely check that out if you want the real lowdown. People who think you can get everything you need from a healthy diet are failing to recognize that sometimes, more than a dietarily necessary amount of certain compounds can have additional benefits and cause desired results. Something isn't a waste just because it's not truly necessary; by that logic, people who have the goal of enjoying dessert are wasting money when they get dessert. Quality of life, and modification of appearance, are totally legitimate goals for people to have even when they don't have deficiencies or complaints to begin with, and proper supplementation can help with those goals.
@@lifewuzonceezr "anyone who come out with their own line of what ever is a scam!" is one of the dumbest egregiously broad generalizations I've ever read, anywhere. It's just plain ridiculous. I've had low iron in the past, so I take a low dose iron supplement. Plus, I'm a middle aged woman, and don't get much sun... so I take a daily calcium with vitamin D. I usually get them in the little pharmacy aisle while I'm grocery shopping; I don't bother with all those fancy supplements at specialty "health food" - and supplement' stores (I cant afford them). I’ve had to go on the prescription one quite a few times and my Dr said that my bones are at risk now. My daughter has the same problem with her vitamin D levels too.

I was tempted to start taking them again, but then thought about some of the things you've said on your channel, and decided to try eating better instead. Can I ask what all you're taking? I spend a lot too but it's worth it lol You can try doing things like take the unnecessary ones off your list, not take full doses some of them, rotate between certain ones, and shop for more affordable brands.
I never took any supplements until i had a gastric bypass last year. Because of malabsorption, i now take a bariatric multi, calcium and iron.
Cracks me up when people argue with me saying vitamins/minerals don't actually do anything 😂
Thank you for standing up for science when it would be so easy to use your platform to sell your own and get rich. People over profit
I mean, most doctors will tell you it's pointless to take vitamins and supplements. They'll tell you to take prescription meds instead because that's how they make their money. They don't get a dime if you buy supplements and vitamins elsewhere.
@@evalynn1863 That's true!!! A lot of them are "in bed" with pharmaceutical companies.
All it takes is to say "Doctors are in bed with Big Pharma" and that then legitimizes them to sell you untested snake oil.

But if you want to get it naturally you basically have to be a nutritionist otherwise you’ll definitely be deficient.

Second, I've got a stomach condition that makes it where I can only eat very small portions which can lead to me feeling super short of breath sometimes to the point where my vision starts to go.

I guarantee she's swindling.
But seriously, anyone who come out with their own line of what ever is a scam! You pay for their name, not the product.
By your crappy logic, nobody has ever been motivated to share something because they actually cared about it and it worked for them. In reality, where you obviously aren't, people are not all Disney villains who only create businesses to be evil. In fact, most people are not that.

Or a gym tee that says "Do you even do chest compressions bro?"
*casually just plays a clip of a video with him at a TED Talk that I knew nothing about and doesn’t bother to explain anything*
He has a video where he talks about the whole experience :)
*nvm fam looks like I’m just stupid*
*thx for the update my dude*
TEDx, not TED. TED would have never requested him.
The last sentence is absolutely right. There are many many vitamins that we don’t know about contained in our food. This is the best reason to eat balance meal.
What if you can’t eat a balanced meal due to financial restrictions? A $0.10 supplement is just way more convenient and economical.
I know he reacts to medical dramas so I 10/10 recommend the show Doctor Stranger it’s a Korean drama but it’s very interesting as the main character is a top surgeon for North Korea and is trying to escape the country and it speaks on like the human experiments that he has to do and what it really means to be a doctor, I don’t know how accurate the medical stuff is but It touches on very interesting topics it’s on the Viki website I would love to see his reaction
That would be so cool! I don't think Korean medical dramas are accurate but they almost always deliver a great story with interesting topics!
Is it subtitled? Sounds interesting to watch.
@@misssunnydee yes you can find it with subs :)
Djamila Z Yes it is and it’s a little romantic if you like that but it’s suspenseful and mysterious I really like it
Ayyee I watched that it's really good.
My mom is obsessed with vitamins right now and I tried telling her this lol
Maybe she'll listen to Dr Mike
Benardine Appiah Konadu not mine
Sameeee
In my case is my aunt, every fucking message on WhatsApp is "use this and it will grow a new kidney on you" (I only have one) or "do that to stop you to overproduce collagen" this pasts days I really am tempted to block her 🤬
I tried but she wouldn’t listen.
Leave me with my organic vitamin and instant ramen diet 😭

lmao feLT
I mean it is a supplement lol
Okay but I’m still gonna eat my flinstone vitamins.
Gummy vitamins are the highlight of my morning.. lol
I like how this video has no effect on our decision
Flintstone vitamins for the Millenials.. gummy vitamins for the current generation. Mom of three here lol
What about sugar bear pills or halo beauty? there was a huge controversy last year it would be GREAT if a profesional like you talked on it.
He did during a street consultancy...... Not about any specific brand but he did talk about supplements for hair growth
Kasturica Sinha what video was it?
THOSE ARE TRASH! i read multiple articles that this product is nothing at all! sugar bear hair pills and stuff won’t help grow your hair or nails faster unless you have a biotin deficiency. they’ve been causing the placebo effect in many people who do use it and the celebrity endorsements just make people buy the product bringing in big bucks to the companies.
@@kasturicasinha need to catch on that but lso i think such topic deserves its own video :)
Then what about Halo Beauty? I’m curious.
Is this why you are so unrealistically perfect? And you don't want others to get your secret. Got it.
Hey Doctor Mike, What are your thoughts on protein shakes?
My mum is a nutritionist and she always told me not to have protein shakes or whatever because having lots of proteins is going to destroy your kidney (it's a bit more complicated than this). Just competitive sportsman should take these things and they get a professional medical advice. It is better to eat good food instead of taking protein powder or vitamin pills. By the way, sorry for my mistakes I'm not a native speaker.
@@luises.1514 That's incorrect out-dated misinformation. Protein is protein. You body does not know if it's coming from a shake or food. The point of protein shakes is that it's cheaper, quicker, more convenient, and far easier to balance with other nutrients when you get part of your protein intake in a concentrated form. But the kidney damage bullshit...just no. If you trained to be a nutritionist in the 1960's you might believe that. But if you're a responsible professional in ANY medical field, you stay up-to-date.
Hey Dr. Mike, idk if you’re going to see this but I was taking about $600 worth of supplements every 200 days consisting of different herbs, vitamins, and minerals thinking it was the “best form” that will help my body long term. After seeing this video, I decided to look back on my supplements and see if I really needed it and I really found out that I didn’t. I saved around $560 every 200 days because I only take a multivitamin and fish oil now. It really helped simplify my life and I feel even BETTER now but if it wasn’t for this video, I never would’ve reflected back on what I was taking. Thank you so much!
I have a question. What are some strategies to get good sleep.
Check out my sleep video :)
What personally helps me, is journaling. It's like a diary, but not like "Dear diary.." if you know what I mean. It clears my head and makes me fall asleep in no-time.
I wear a sleep mask! Makes everything really dark, I sometimes use earplugs cause I work nights, try to avoid using devices (phone, laptop etc) like an hour before bed that really helped me a lot... also and it may sound stupid but make your room peaceful... make it place that is for sleep and tranquility.. I try as much as possible to not do work in my room :)
Tumblr
I started a routine to prepare for sleep at night- chamomile tea, wash my face, brush my teeth, play some Moonlight Sonata and I'm OUT! It took about 2 weeks for it to become habit but even when I'm not tired halfway through I get drowsy. Good luck!😴😴😴
Would love to hear your thoughts on Traditional chinese medicine !
Ooh careful with that one. He may get kicked off of certain social media platforms.
Use the term "Snake Oil" in the title instead to avoid getting flagged ;)
Unrelated but his neck veins lol
I hope he answers this
It's Pseudoscience
Hey Dr. Mike, you mentioned once that you’re an immigrant. I’d love to hear your story and your experiences :)
😊

He is from Russia and he made a video about it already, check in his channel
Literally not lying before this video started i got a vitamin supplements Ad 🤣🤣🤣🤣

KTSamurai1 *slow claps* 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 ...Well done, fellow human. Well done.
So, im a hypochondriac and when went to the doctor i thought i had low EVERYTHING. Turns out all i had was low vitamin d and i forget to take the supplement all the time.
fineimjessica same 😂
LMAOOOOO relatable
I low c and d though i got cancer my god.
Dr. Mike: "Odds are, you don't have one of these health conditions"
Me, sitting here with 3 out of 4: :|
Then we hope you ARE taking your vitamins :)
I've read your comment at the same time he said it
I "only" have 2 but I felt this 😅 I had a bunch of blood work and I'm deficient in everything (except iron and B12)
Those places exist for the health of the *wallets* of the people selling the stuff.
Same
STRESS CAUSES DEFICIENCIES. Chronic stress also causes a depletion of vitamins and minerals
Universities and the Education System cause Suciidal Chronic Stress.
To be fair most ppl are vitamin D and B12 deficient. So yeah.
and most women are iron deficient where I live, they all eat chicken for their protein.
2:17 actually odds ARE I DO have a vitamin D deficiency...I should probably go outside
my doctor wrote me a script for vitamin D (i dont mean OTC pills, they're pills you can only get with a script from your doctor like Vicodin), but i usually never leave my house so i can see why he thought i was a vampire.
Great Leader I had to get a prescription for vitamin D also. It was one gel pill a week that was 50,000 IU’s! I can’t be in the sun because of lupus and dairy doesn’t agree with me. After finishing the 12 weeks I started taking 1,000 IU’s a day. Hoping it will keep my levels up. I’ve had to go on the prescription one quite a few times and my Dr said that my bones are at risk now. My daughter has the same problem with her vitamin D levels too.
@@Annette1965 i was on a tablet for vitamin D (idk how strong it was) and a tablet for a type of acid that were very low in my body.
Yeah after blood work I was told I had a severe vitamin D deficiency. On 50000 units a week and it’s honestly helped my energy quite a bit.
I would much rather go outside than take my Vitamin D pills but it's like -12 degrees out there.
Dr. Mike greetings from med student from Mexicali, Mexico!
You inspire us here! 💪🇲🇽✨💖💖
Second That, love his videos
Hope you’re doing well🙃
Vamos Baja!!!!
I've spent so much money on supplements the last few years! I so desperate to find something that might help improve my situation. I was tempted to start taking them again, but then thought about some of the things you've said on your channel, and decided to try eating better instead. After about two weeks, I noticed my sleep quality had improved, and I'm also craving sugar less. There's still room for improvement, but I'm definitely on the right track!
Can I ask what all you're taking?
I spend a lot too but it's worth it lol
You can try doing things like take the unnecessary ones off your list, not take full doses some of them, rotate between certain ones, and shop for more affordable brands.
I never took any supplements until i had a gastric bypass last year. Because of malabsorption, i now take a bariatric multi, calcium and iron. I had my tonsils out in October and didn't take my calcium and iron for 2 weeks as it was too hard to swallow them. My fingernails got really weak and started breaking. So i make sure i take them regularly now!
Thanks for the great example when supplements make sense Beth! Hope you’re doing well 💪🏼
Thanks. I'm doing awesome. Lost 35kg/77lb so far and feeling much healthier.:)
That's how you do it right!
@@brittanyr9471 no, modifying your diet and lifestyle is how you do it right! Cutting the carbs would have been cheaper immediately and in the long run, no malabsorption syndrome for life, so no supplements required, no inflammatory pain, no scars, no long term health effects. Bariatric surgery 🤬🤬🤬. No long term health studies have been done, no one's lived long enough to have them done!
@@wormwoodbush3537 I meant that's how you take supplements right. Not how you lose weight. You don't take supplements unless you have a legitimate reason to. Also some people are so morbidly obese that bypass makes sense because they have to rapidly lose weight to reduce stress on their joints, heart, and lungs. In a perfect world no one would get that size to start with, but humans aren't perfect
Dude I knew it! So informative thank u
I was thinking the same. I was looking at some but it's true ask your doctor first.
I always took the sour gummy ones. I feel no difference, do is that one safe?
The IKA Ted Talk was really good. Also, you sound more like my Dad every day and you're younger than me. 😑 My Dad hated the Vitamin Water craze from a few years ago. Said the same thing about expensive pee.
Yeah what's with the expensive per bit? It's not like you could sell it. Could you?
@@hopesy12u4 the expensive pee bit is to indicate that your just paying to pee these vitamins out since a lot of vitamins are water soluble.
Prevention is better than Cure. That's one of the reason why peoole are taking food supplements.
