  • Came across this bar on ebay for a reasonable yet believable price. Turned out to be fake. Just wanted to share. If I am unable to return this to the seller, I will make another video where I will open and examine the bar to learn it's true metal content.

    It's really good that people like you are putting this out there. Unless you're rich and have money to burn its not cheap or easy to invest in gold. And to be ripped off for thousands of dollars hurts. So any help in keeping this from happening is greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing this.

    Thank you for sharing and demonstrating, you are saving a lot of people from falling for this trap. You are doing the stacking community a solid a charity if you will, and helping new stackers to understand what to look out for. All in all better to spend the extra 20 bucks or whatnot and always go to a trusted reputable bullion dealer.

    If it's discounted below spot it's got to be fake. There's no reason to sell gold below or even at spot because it has so much liquidity. But of course fake bars are also sold at above spot.

    Same factory in China today also makes the PCGS coin holders perfect, with the Golden Shield, with working NFC chip inside, correct QR-code and even the CAC hologram and PCGS holograms are flawless and impossible to spot even when held beside a real one. This is scary and I never again buy from a private person on eBay etc. I only buy from trusted dealers. I was hustled for 7,900 USD in one single purchase for a 1889-CC Morgan Dollar in PCGS holder with golden shield, CAC at the slab, and 2 pcs of these 1 oz PAMP bars

    Glad you got your money back, I don't buy it unless I hold it first. I don't know if you have any local shops, maybe I'm fortunate. I have about nine shops within a 10 mile radius. he get weight it, and test them before you buy,,, it's hard to trust somebody you don't know. And that's a lot of money. Plus private stores don't want a bad name forever, fake sale could ruin their reputation, and that's a good thing...

    I bought 2 fake 5g pamp bars of eBay, I opened a not as described case and told him that one of the bars numbers didn’t match the card and they where too thick, maybe about 3-4mm where they are meant to be 0.9mm. No response and 10 days later eBay approved my case and asked me to send them back for a full refund, so I sent them back and kept an eye on the tracking and it said that he refused to take it and now it’s getting sent back to me, I still got refunded but I’m not sure what is going to happen to the bars

    So would you advise against buying gold bars on ebay in general? Or just pay extra close attention to their feedback and/or if their account represents a legitimate business?

    • @jeffw1267
      @jeffw1267 7 лет назад +1

      I would say, don't buy them in assay cards. People think they are more safe but actually they are less safe. Counterfeiters know that most customers would not tear a bar out of an assay card to test it. The bar in this video is clearly too thick and has scratches on the edge, so it's easy to spot without cracking it out of the assay card, but there are tungsten fakes that will look as thin as a real gold bar. Unless you have expensive X-ray equipment you would have to take the bar out to test it, and like I said most people are hesitant to do that.

    One of the easiest way to tell if a PAMP bar is fake is to look at the details of the woman. The fake ones are usually larger and visually "uglier". Real ones are usually more defined. 2nd dead giveaway is PAMP's logo. Theres almost always a noticeable difference between a real and fake logo. Check 2:38

    A big problem is the plastic packing. Serious gold dealers pay less if opened. If measuring weight, volume and electric resistivity - it's possible to reveal also golden core Tungsten, without damaging the bar. There is no possible way to make a fake bar with same density AND resistivity as pure solid gold. Electric resistivity is a measurement of how good a certain material conducts electrical current, and (if the density equals 19,3 gram/cm3) we only need to worry about 100% Tungsten. And the electic resistivity differs A LOT between Gold and Tungsten. (Tungsten with 25% Copper will fail a density test. Density and resistivity together separates Gold from Tungsten, but the package has to be broken. (Also hardness differs, but such a test will damage the specimen)

    Bars are nice - I like them. However lately I've switched to buy only coins unless I get a good deal on something I know is genuine. The problem with bars and especially in assay cards is that lately with all those fake bars lately you run a high risk - unless buying from a reputable dealer (and even then accidents have happened). With bullion coins you have the possibility to to do various non destructive test on them like weight/size and pinging test. For pinging you can even get an app which will tell you if the resonant frequencies are the expected for that coin. If it passes all those tests you're sure if it's not genuine then at least a replica in the right material. For a bar and especially in assay card (which breaking it will lower the price dealers will give you when selling) it is much harder to verify authenticity. In an assay card a plated tungsten bar will easily pass as genuine in most cases. Sure bars ping too (not in assay card) but because of all those shapes - does it sound right? Of course not in a card you also do a specific gravity check but to get it accurate enough you need laboratory grade equipment. So for me it's coins from here and beside the price difference for the cheapest coins vs. the cheapest bars are just about non existent. They're also easier stored and managed - in Hartbergers f.ex.

    If nobody buys from private who will buy your gold when you need to turn it back into money?

    Even $20 below spot sounds fishy. You could list it at $20 OVER spot and it would sell within minutes. So why would a seller offer any discount?

      I ALWAYS sell for under spot because I want the cash right then and don't want to wait till next few days or possibly weeks. There plentiful of real gold bars on EBay... I shop on eBay to get a DEAL so I think its right to give people a deal! Ill never go to any pawn shop, they feed off desperate good people. F #& that. Yes, don't buy from someone with 0 feedback or less than 100 ... Use your best judgement. EBay offers money back so I'm a fan.

    I could tell by the tint of the gold. fake is brighter, shinier. The fake might be a tasty chocolate treat under the gold foil
