- Did I Buy A FAKE Gold Coin From A Wholesaler? WTF?! a video showcasing some recent gold I got in stock. However, something was very "off" with one of the gold coins I received. I instantly saw something did not appear correct and tested the gold bullion coins under the loop and with the Sigma Metalytics machine.

ERROR. Sell it for 10x the price! Everyone wins!!
I think he does
buffalos can have different tones of yellow, i have two legit buffalos that have distinctively different shades of yellow
I buy from online sources that rely on their reputation for future sales. I test by weighing and then with a Pocket Pinger. I do not buy from Ebay, Facebook, etc.
Always good to verify every purchase. I've never bought any fakes. But, it's scary to think about. Glad yours was real.
Sal !!!! 🤘 Had to make sure it wasn't Apmex 🤣
@SalivateMetal Aint it the truth!!!!
I only buy from SD, Monument, or APmex
Hi Sal...hope you are doing well!
@@TalkingBullion hope you are doing well too! 😎
i have a Sigma and I use it for everything. I don't care if its a coin show, coin shop, or online bullion dealer. I check everything. Fortunately, I have never had anything fake. I did have a questionable 2014 Libertad one time...just barely off of the Sigma but I did 4 other tests (including specific gravity) and it passed so I count it as real. Thanks Stormy!
The new fakes beat the machine. Better do a final ping . They pass the machines but ping is clearly off.
Sounds like you have gold fever… get it? Gold fever meeeehhh! 😂 “dad joke of the year” I also had to break out the magnifier on some 1/10 gold kookaburra the other day 👓
Buffalos are known to have issues along the rim because the 9999 is soft. Sometimes the die basically smashes the rim a little too hard. Thats a good coin but nothing worth grading and not an error.
I just bought one of those same testers 2 days ago. I still haven't received it, but I'm anxious to try it out on all my coins and bars. I hope nothing I have is fake.
I have the same SIGMA PRO for over a year now , I love mine !!
Possible end roll damage? Gold is very soft so I would expect some kind of damage.
So Good To See You MUDSWAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@stevewoods8116 🙂
Unsure how the recessed parts would be like that but not the others.
Yeah, if I was going to be a dealer that machine would be a must have.
To my knowledge I have not bought any fakes yet.
still look like scratches to me. Personally I would return it.... I see you tested it but Buffalos shouldn't have anything that even looks like a scratch on them.
There aren't scratches on the other devices of the coin. Odd patterns.
Great video. I've got the Sigma original and love it. I will occasionally buy from individuals and think the Sigma is a must have. Using it plus checking weight and dimensions will work every time. I even carry it with me to shows or new coin or pawnshops I visit.
I also have the sigma pro, and its interesting how it varies with regard to resistance readings among even the same products. You could have the same coin or bar in the same weight read differently. I think the .999 stamp is just a minimum fineness. I have come across rounds that were dead center .9999.
Usually 9999 reads in the green and 999 usually reading the yellow brackets. I have some 1980s and 90's libertads that don't register on my sigma i put them on Sterling 925 and they read. I think some older rounds and bars still have trouble reading on the sigma. I've had to go to a local LCS to put them on the xrf machine and they all came back fine.
I have a Sigma PMV (original version) and when I got it I went through my whole stack. Only a single 90% silver quarter that was heavily worn / heavily tarnished that appeared to be a 1939 coin was not silver. I looked at it under a 10x loupe and it appears to actually be a 1989 coin with damage to the "8" making it appear to be a "3" - and the edge was so tarnished you can't see the copper edge. Later on I got a silver rare earth magnet "slide" and it failed that test too! I tested my whole stack and only that one quarter was not silver - not bad!
We thought there was something off about the coloring as well! Looks like it was just rubbed a bit. I’m so glad it’s real!
I have a Sigma... and used your link for the purchase, Stormy. Put out a few videos on it a while back. I like you're though. It's a supped up version of my $1K model.
In New Zealand it's the exact opposite, price-wise. It's usually cheaper to purchase from a refinery/mint, than from on the street, so to speak.
On Trademe, NZ's eBay auction site equivalent, people will often pay at least, what I can purchase, new from my local refinery. I've also seen 1oz silver coins/rounds go for as high as 30-60%, over a local buy price, from a legitimate seller. Then, you have shipping. I tend to do pickup, as I'm a cheap 🤐
That is usually for the uncommon pieces. There are sellers who only ever sell 1oz, at a time. I just sit & laugh. I do remember one seller trying to sell a local 1kg silver bar, from ABC (Australian), having a buy price of around NZ$300 higher, than I could buy for, from my usual seller.
The reason why the coin is scratched because somebody had it in a bezel on a chain
I sure would not like to get that damaged Buffalo because it’s a beautiful coin when not damaged
Just looks like abrasions on the surface. The buffs are 24kt, and even when just in flips, they can take dings.
I bought a Perth mint kangaroo gold minted bar with a missing kangaroo at the back. Emailed Perth mint with pictures , turned out it’s genuine. That was years back.
Phew
My Pawn shop owner GAVE me a 1/4 FAKE AGE for teaching purposes. That silver coin is fine. I have that style of metalytics.
That's the type of damage you see when a coin is in a bezel .. Right ?
Calibrate... i have to calibrate mine, which is the older one, everytime
Great Video Stormy. I have bought jewelry that was marked and not real
Probably someone was drooling on the Buffalo coin
Don't forget to use the third specific gravity test on coins, that is one of the advantages of this machine. You need to enter weight and shape, and it will give you a dimension line. As a dealer, I see everyone overlooking that option. Regarding tungsten, which will give you perfect weight and will fool an XRF if made with thick gold skin, the through test on this machine will fail tungsten all the time. Tungsten is one of the worst high end frauds in the gold business due to the near same Specific Gravity as gold. If you use the older machine from Sygma, it will test positive if the thickness of the Gold around the tungsten is deep enough.
Echoing what CA Matt said, the old Sigma (pocket sized as you call it) has settings for 0.9999 silver and 0.999, but the new one, although it does more overall, only has setting for 0.9999 silver. So those 0.999 are going to read slightly outside.
New fakes coming they pass your machine test . You have to ping it . The only way to check ping.
Good job it wasnt fake
Wait so it’s real after all? Title of video says it’s fake. I’m confused.
Has question mark, like I’m questioning myself “did I just buy a fake coin?”
@@EmpirePreciousMetals ugh, totally misread that. Sorry!
Yes, three fakes ASE from MCM, short on weight, missing Reed in the wrong position, did not ping, received refund. One fake from Certified Dime. Sigma is fooled by plating. Ping and weight.
The Sigma PMV can be great if you read the instructions thoroughly, so you know the depth it penetrates into the sample is related to the resistivity of the sample. It can penetrate much deeper into samples with high resistivity such as the AGE or Platinum Eagle than it can into silver or pure gold. You also have to select the appropriate wand/sensor for the sample and not all wands penetrate to the same depth. What people don't understand is that it may not penetrate through 100% of the sample for everything you try to measure and the Sigma PMV isn't always the most appropriate tool depending on what you are testing. Just like all things in life, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Silver can't be as deeply penetrated because it's resistivity is around 1.60 for .9999 silver and most .999 silver measures around 1.65-1.68. Copper measures right around 1.68 - 1.73 which looks like silver on the Sigma PMV. A copper plated coin can look like real silver on the Sigma PMV. Same story with plated .9999 gold. Silver needs to be weighed, pinged, and given a common sense visual measurement of volume. Copper is 75% of the density of Silver so it will appear oversized in some aspect of volume if it's weight is correct. I'm glad you get it.
People treat that machine like it's the holy grail. I blame people for not reading the instructions but also the LCS shares the blame. They use that machine as the easy button to tell a customer something is real and instill confidence in their business. I'm certain they actually know to use it appropriately but as the owner what are you going to say when you interact with so many customers asking the same questions? The average stacker is misinformed on what the Sigma PMV can and can't actually do.
The Pro tests through the sample. The original does not.
@@johngalt2071 You are correct. I use the "base" model so my comment was referring to what the instructions for that one says. William pointed out you shouldn't stop testing there for .999 silver. Sigma Metalytics mentions this in their FAQ's in the PRO manual. I wish I picked up the PRO but as a small stacker I could hardly justify the $700 base model (back when it was that cheap). The Thru tester, specific gravity, and volume testing on the PRO would be nice features to use.
"1. Why does my silver read in the yellow?
Our “Pure Silver” range is calibrated to put .9999 silver in the green and .999 silver in the yellow on the right. We do this because we so frequently see .999 silver counterfeited that we want all users to be cautious of .999 silver samples and to check the other aspects (markings, weight, and size) of the sample prior to making any judgment."
Does that tester work on 1/10 oz eagles? I saw a guy gettin’ one tested with a sigma at my lcs. It tested at 20 karat instead of 22k
Yes
Great video stormy, it will be interesting to see if that Buffalo is an error!
No one can hustle Empire Precious Metals!
Lmao, how the hell are you, you animal?
Scratches, scrapes, dings etc usually mean it was tested by a pawn shop owner.
What if someone create a coin that can fool a sigma machine? I mean if you understand the principle behind how the machine works, can't you fool the signal??
It would be pretty difficult to mimic resistivity of metal and also get the size and weight right.
If you hold enough gold, You should be able to tell from the color and just holding it.
Ping test
How's the weight?
Sigma verifier is excellent
I have the pro mini, works great and compact to take to estate and garage sales. More fake Morgan’s than real..people selling never happy and think I am scamming them. Until I put a known real one I bring with me to show them machine is accurate…still 9 out of ten don’t believe me or the machine. I thank them for their time and walk away,
I believe it's a die error.
Get what you pay for : don’t get scammed!!
Still needs to be returned.
I have a sigma and for some reason its finiky when it comes to silver. May have to call them one day
If you want to get rid of the scratch one i will gladly accept it.
Get some colloidal silver (and an aspirator)
SILVER will kill any bug 💥
Nebulizer-not aspirator.
I have a sigma and use it on everything I buy, especially from dancing storm troopers!
Don't know what you have there hopefully it's an error and it would be worth more
I use the Sigma Pro Mini on everything I buy. Your Pro is the big brother. The previous generation had way more issues. You really should not just test the resistivity, but also the dimensions and weight. Silver plated copper could look ok on the resistivity test, but won’t pass all 3 tests I believe. Your machine makes it easy to test dimensions. For weight you obviously need a scale. I have found a couple fakes from trusted online sellers. I was made whole, but it was certainly shocking.
I would be suspicious of that one also. I would generally say don't ping test any .9999 gold coins but I'd ping that one asap regardless of what the Sigma says. It will leave a tiny mark but who cares as that one is already ugly. If it has the right resonant frequency then you can be 100% certain it's real. It does look a bit unusual.
SilverGold Bull is very good!
2k coin, i wouldn't be happy. Send it back.
Nice Sigma Pro 🎉
Thanks 😁
I would not be happy if I'd saved up $2K for a Buff and received a less than near-perfect one. Since you do so much business with the company, and you've documented it well, why not call and return for an exchange?
PS~Accidentally bought a fake ASE on ebay three years ago when I was just beginning. Looked in the very wee, fine print later where it said "silver plated." Oh well, I like it attached to my fridge door, with a magnet, of course! lol
Someone bought it.
Looks a bit off in color to me but if it tested ok maybe go get an XRF machine and see what it says 🤣🤣, nice looking pieces though. Great Job on your success and 👁️ hope you continue to kill it!!
LOL. Love ya Clinton.
Sigma is a great tool but can be fooled, if you suspect a fake you will also need to take measures and weigh on accurate scale if all 3 check out all good 💪😎👍🇺🇸💰🙏
Why didn't you test gravity/dimensions too?
One, no need to waste my time doing a gravity test because it is powerful enough to read through the coin, but I just read that apparently the machine can test specific gravity:
Chatter?
It’s REAL , DIE MARKS
Can you send it back?
I sold it- someone wanted it.
We bought one this morining at a coin store we trusted. It was a gold Buffalo 🐃 2,106 plus 15 for tax
Definitely fake
Was real
✌️✌️😁✌️✌️

Thanks for sharing this information Colorado Silverback777 Stay Healthy keep stacking ❤🎉.
Herd of buffalos 🦬
Workin on it.
@@EmpirePreciousMetals love your videos and channel. Keep up the good work man
I have the same machine that PRO , and I have found 4 silver coins , so far all my gold buffalos 🦬 are real . The machine is the greatest indeed.
Hi empire ! I have the same machine and check all my buffaloes 🦬 so far they are good !!
Cool 👍! Not a cheap piece of machinery!
I know , but since I buy a lot of buffalos 🦬 it’s well worth it indeed
