What’s the best book you’ve read in September?
Between two kingdoms is my favorite ❤
Everything i never told you! it was phenomenal and also The Weight of Blood was amazing!
Giovanni's Room!
This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger
The pigeon by Patrick suskind
I remember seeing a review of Babel that said "I didn't need a 560 page book to tell me that slavery and colonialism is bad" and that perfectly summed up my thoughts
💀
So proud of you of all the books you read this September keep up the wonderful work xoxo 😚 🖤🍃🍃🍃🖤🧡🧡🧡🧡🖤👻🍃🍃🖤🧡🍂🧡🖤🍃👻📙📚📙📙📙👻🖤🧡🍂📖📖📖📙📚📚🍃🍃👻🖤🧡🍂🎃🎃🍂🍂🧡👻👻🍃📚📙📚🍃🍃
Completely agree with Babel! The first half of the book was so engaging and entertaining, certainly giving all the dark academia vibes and then after that it seems like R.F.Kuang kinda lost herself in the plot and decided to turn the book into a huge thesis of why colonialism is bad and the story and the characters kinda lost themselves over there...
The ending was too all over the place. I really wanted to love it but something was definitely missing.
This month I' ve read a lot too. I' m two books to hit a hundread! Thank you for recommending The Seven and a Half deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. Five starts. So Thank you again!!! I dnfed The secret history, too pretentions for my taste. Maybe one day I'll give it another try. ❤️ Happy fall!
Vita Nostra and Razorblade Tears are two of my favorites! ❤️❤️❤️📚
The Ippos King (Grace Draven, Wraith Kings #3) was my favorite of September. My other two 5-stars were An Unexpected Peril and An Impossible Imposter (Deanna Raybourn, Veronica Speedwell #6 & #7). Congrats on 100! I'm at 91 which is insane for me. I think last year was 50-ish?
I hope you like Sense and Sensibility. I liked it mostly, but didn't care for the ending... I had really hoped things would go a different way and I'm like, bitter about it 😂but I will wait to hear your thoughts before I say anything else haha.
Agreed! Razorblade Tears. 5 stars for me as well. So good. I read his other book Blacktop Wasteland, and now I will read anything by him.
I need to read that one asap!
For October TBR don’t sleep on Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks. It is delightful! Will serve as a nice palate cleanser between some of the dark stuff.
If you need more suggestions for fall, my recent favorites were: Three Hours (thriller) and The Thursday Murder Club (cozy mistery, liked the second one even more)
The second one is on my TBR for this month! I've heard that the second would be a fav so I'm excited :D
I really really wanted to read Razorblade Tears and all I see is that it’s a so so read. Why I’m waiting for your thoughts. And yey! Will read it ASAP ❤
I'm reading Vita Nostra right now. You're right. So freaking weird in a really good way. I didn't get into it until after 50 pages but now the only reason I haven't finished it in one day is because of work.
I am interested in reading Babel because my family is from Canton. My grandma then moved to England and had her children here (including my mum). The reviews on the novel are divisive though 😬 edit: I’m also interested in Poppy War.
I agree, I really liked Babel but it's far from perfect. I also gave it four stars. The characters were to shallow and the message was understood without all the extra explanation, at least in my opinion
I loved Vita Nostra 😀 couldn't describe it but I loved every bit of it!
The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz is the perfect small town gothic mistery vibes!!
Small town psychological thriller series recommandation: Beyond Evil. It's a Korean series available on Netflix. I swear if you love small town trope you will definitely be interested in this series.
ugh I hate when people excuse gross language with "it's just locker room talk"🙄
Right? To me this is dealbreaker level. How did she not feel betrayed? Her own husband? About something she's dedicating her whole life to??
There is a mini series of Sense & Sensibility, I think it is from year 2008 and in my opinion the best version of the book.
I’m nervous now, I just purchased Babel. It’s like 3rd on my list to read next. And now I want to get the dead poets society book 😅
Those are some great books!!
I’ve read both Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland this year. I loved both and will read anything by SA Cosby
My favourite is Dissolution by C J Sansom (Matthew Shardlake series)
It's a Tudor mystery/whodunit. Another one is War Lord by Bernard Cornwell. This is also a great retelling of the Arthurian legend. I loved how Lancelot (not a spoiler) is portrayed as a villain. Love his writing. ❤
I'm in a major reading slump right now, but still drop everything when you upload 🥺
PS: I think you forgot to link your TBR for next month.
Thank you! I added it :)
Hey hey, my recommendation for you is Glennkill by Leonie Swann. It's cosy and it has a (paranormal?) twist to it.
Wrong place wrong time sounds so interesting!!
That Hugo book - a vibe. Couldn't stop laughing! :D
I swear as soon as I sit down in front of the camera my head becomes empty 😂
Emily, have you read The Last Magician? The final book is set the be released and since there’s a lot of time travel (handled very well, IMO!) in this series, I’m interested to see how that’s wrapped up!
Have you tried the mysteries by Tana French? They are quintessential detective novels that are slow paced and character driven. Each book has a protagonist who was a side character in the previous book. I really enjoyed 'The Likeness' the most - about stolen identity.
I also enjoy the detective novels by Louise Penny - shorter faster versions of Tana French books ( I know book 2/3 has some fat-fobia that appears randomly in some parts).
I was halfway through Razorblade Tears when I put it aside not because I didn't like it but bcoz I'm watching Kdramas and Cdramas (reasons I'm in a reading slump). You're making me want to finish it.
The best books I read last month was The Silent Patient, I have Wrong Place Wrong Time and Vita Nostra on my TBR. I am looking at The Woman in the Library too 😉
Ah you're making me want to reread Razorblade Tears!!
I would be such a good movie!
I work in a book store and when this little girl came up to my desk to order Dead Poets Society I literally asked "are you sure?" and explained my problem with it. She didn't order it 🥳 My boss was not happy at first as he overheard it, but in the end he was proud that we can be this honest to our customers. Hopefully they'll appreciate it and come back because of it!
You did the right thing!!
I think you might enjoy "Murder with Peacocks" by Donna Andrews its a very good cozy mystery set in a small town also the heroine is a blacksmith with a very unique and funny family :)
Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland are IMMACULATE.
I can't wait to read that too!
My favorite Moliere play is Tartuffe. It's very funny, and "you must be Tartuffified" is one of the greatest lines ever written.
I saw a stage performance of the play a couple of years ago without knowing anything about it and it was SO good! But also the actor who played Tartuffe was just perfect for the role
@@lenani9143 It's hard to believe something written that long ago can make me laugh today. I need to go watch a live performance as well.
Love Jane Austin one of my favorite authors! 🎃📙📚🎃🎃🎃🖤🍃📚📚📙🎃🎃🍃🖤🧡📚📚📙🎃🧡🖤🍃🍃🖤📚📚🎃🎃🎃🍂👻🧡🖤👻👻👻🧡🍃📚📚🎃🎃📙📙🧡👻🍂🍂👻🖤🍃🍂🧡🖤📚📚📙🎃
Ever read any Richard Russo? I love his writing, definitely small town and cozy! It's slow paved but the writing is excellent. The books stay with you for a long time
I read Magpie Murders last year and really liked it. I got so wrapped up in the mystery within the mystery and was a bit annoyed when it went back to the 'real world.' My next audiobook from the library will be the sequel, Moonflower Murders, before the TV adaption premiers on PBS in the States middle of Oct.
Yes it was hard to wait for the end! I didn't know about the adaptation!
@@BookswithEmilyFox yeah, no idea if/when it will be shown in Canada.
Funnily enough, my favorite book was another Reese Club read which was The Last Mrs. Parrish. I will have to pick up Wrong Place, Wrong Time. Thanks for the reviews.📚
Oh I'll have to check that!
Great Wrap Up!
Another great video😊
You seem to enjoy books that touch on social issues of the day (Razorblade Tears) --- so I'm really curious to know what you would think of The Book of Otto and Liam.
Definitely want to read Wrong Place Wrong Time and Razorblade Tears ☺
If you had hated Razorblade Tears, sorry , but as much as I love your channel, I would have had to have said goodbye to you. I mean, wow, what a story! 5 stars.
This isn't a book recommendation, but since you like weird events/time-loops, I'd recommend the tv series FROM. Season 1 aired some months back (I'm hoping there is a season 2) and it was..... definitely interesting.
Since you like thrillers with a sci-fi twist, then you should read the Sam Dryden series by Patrick Lee. The first one is called Runner, and it can be read as a stand-alone. 😊
I'll definitely check it out!
I NEED the video about time loops
I need to do one for movie/tv shows too!
"Sweet bean paste" - please, find the movie. It gives you the opportunity to associate with these characters and to like them much more than the book allows ;)
I didn't know it was a movie! I'll definitely check it out!
I liked Magpie Murders, but I felt like the author REALLY used Agatha Christie in name to both sell the book and to write the plot, so much so I thought the Christie estate deserved royalties ( he even uses them as characters). This seems to be a thing lately by publishers to sell books or by mystery authors not creating fresh content -by using this woman’s name. Just write your own book.
Check out “whirligig” by andrew james greig. Small town vibe based in north of Scotland. A page turner which gets dark quick. Definitely recommend
Razor blade tears .. I just can’t with that title 😂
SO EXCITED!! 🖤👻🧡👻🍃🖤👻👻🍂🍂🍁🎃🎃📖📚📚👻🍃🖤🍃🧡📚🧡👻🖤🍂🍁🎃🎃🍁🍂🍁🧡📚📚📚👻🍃🍃🧡🍁🍂🎃🎃🍁📚🧡👻🍃🖤👻🧡🖤🍂📙📙📚🧡📖📖📖📚🧡👻🖤🖤
The Paradox Hotel was a fun recent Sci-Fi read.
Yay I’m so glad u liked magpie murders bc I thought u would enjoy it
It was very cozy! I have The Thursday Murder Club on my TBR for October so I'm hoping to keep going with the cozy mysteries!
@@BookswithEmilyFox never read that one but I have gotten into the Lady Hardcastle series and it’s been nice to take a break from dark thrillers to a more chill mystery in a small town
I added Vita Nostra to my TBR. I love weirdness
Emily - what lipstick are you wearing and beat book last month was Cold Moon over Babylon
Mac Fast Play!
Have you read American Elsewhere by Robert Jackson Bennet? A small town in New Mexico, a newcomer discovers creepy stuff, not an open ending and not a typical kind of strangeness either, it was rather creative and sci-fi-ish
I haven't! I've tried foundryside by him and was disappointed... I have another series by him on my shelf I'll try before getting anything else!
Have you tried End of the World House? It has time loops 👀
A creepy mystery I like is The Winter People, and a more unusual mystery is Drive Your Plow Over The Bones Of The Dead.
Books and Lala is doing a whole video series on reading cozy mysteries (5 books read per video) so you should check that out for recommendations
I haven't read Sex Matters. I agree, from hearing what you said, that's weird that she would include that little story in the book with her husband. Is it possible he did step in and they just brushed him off? Or maybe she did have a conversation with him, but chose to leave that out?
I'm only suggesting this because I am married and there are things my husband and I have discussed that I won't share only because the discussion can get very personal between me and hubby. It's odd that she would even include that without suggesting that there may have been a resolution or discussion. But maybe she didn't feel it was necessary.
Believe me, if my husband came home from his work place and admitted that his colleagues were having a little inside "joke" disparaging women about something that is actually real and serious, THERE WOULD BE SOME WORDS. Not angry words (anger gets everyone nowhere fast) just WORDS.
Hi, I'm not sure if it's your French coming out, or if you're just not sure but Juan is pronounced Wan (like wand) :) ps. like others have mentioned in the comments you are also making me want to read Razorblade Tears, though for unknown reasons, I keep thinking it's Razorback Tears and then some how it's about dinosaurs so when I am reminded of what it is about, I'm a bit confused. Okay, bye! Hope your (insert time of day you may read this) is going well.
Can u make a video on how to improve on reading?
With all your women's health nonfiction reading this year, have you come across a new release " vagina obscura" ? I haven't picked it up yet myself but it looks great!
I haven't heard of it no! I'll look into it :)
I have mixed feelings on the discourse on Babel because of the whole subtly thing. Yeah, I get that the plot can get lost when the messages and themes are extremely apparent, but on the other hand people literally though Rue in the Hunger Games was white even though it explicitly says otherwise. Like people have definitely glossed over subtle themes and ideas in favor of maintaining the status quo so IDK if people would prefer subtly in that messages that challenge that or not, but RF Kuang is an academic so I also think that plays a role of being absolutely straight forward with the message even if its overkill
I think we started reading sense and sensibility on the same day. It's assigned reading for my Brit Lit class; I thought it was kind of ironic. I'm liking it so far, I just find the plot a little dull for my usual liking.
Of the 4 Austen books I've read, it's definitely my least favorite. :/
I'm only halfway through but I don't think it will be my favorite. My least favorite so far has been Northanger Abbey!
Loved your "complete piece of poo" comment about Don Juan!😅
❤️📚
❤
❤
I hated Every Last Secret I don’t blame you for dnfing 😊
“A complete piece of poo” I genuinely spit my tea out 😂
I really liked The Woman in the Library.
I'm halfway through and I'm still getting confused with the book vs real story XD
Yep, not reading Sex Matters because of the personal story. I was gaslighted by a neurologist and it took me years to try another neurologist who was good and I now have a diagnosis and meds.
Or maybe I will read it at some point but not soon because I just finished Invisible Women and it was so rage-inducing. Lol
I've had so many bad experiences with doctors and twice I've been sick for years because my family doctor sucks -_-
IW was 100% rage inducing! Sex Matters wasn't as bad (except for that story lol)
Time loop + aliens: The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley
I just finished reading Sex Matters and can't remember exactly what the quote was but she definitely brushed over it without addressing it.... enjoyed the book apart from that but did find that story an odd inclusion
Thank you!! I put my name back on the waiting list for it at my library. I need the exact quotes so I can complain without second guessing myself 😂
R.F. Kuang loves writing about idiots, I hate her characters and Babel put me in a reading slump (I'm stuck at 30% and unable to move on cause my brain sucks)
I find with audiobook I need to listen to a book that has straightforward plot, time jump trope , too many technical unfamiliar terms or too many PoVs , I’ll just be lost
I looked online to find an English translation to "elle en beure épais" and Google translate gave me "she in thick beure" thank you Google
You need to write to the Sex Matters author. I havnt read the book but I want her response about that conversation with her husband 🤣
The IRONY of you doubting yourself over how you remembered the gross anecdote in Sex Matters.
I know… I just want to have the exact quote but I’m still so annoyed weeks later
Going to be skippingThe Dead Poet Society now .... yikes 😅
Omg Dead Poet Society noooo. I will noooooot be reading it. 💀
S.A. Cosby?? Oof…that’s a really unfortunate name 😅 (think about what SA stands for…then think about Bill Cosby…awkward)
Good afternoon Emily! Hope you are well xoxo 😚 🧡👻👻🧡👻👻📚📚📚📙📖📖🍁🍃🖤🍂🍃🖤🖤🍃🍃🖤🖤🍃🎃🎃🎃🧡👻📚📚📚📖📖📙📚📚📙📚📚📖🍁🍁🧡👻👻👻🧡🍂🖤🖤🍃🍃🖤🍃
I feel like the doctor’s husband anecdote is the most white women thing ever 😬
It’s honestly so embarrassing
I enjoyed wrong place wrong time such a fantastic book 🧡🖤😘😘👻🧡🍃🍃🍃🍂🎃🍂😘👻👻📚📚🧡🖤👻📚🍂🍃🍃📙📙🍃🍃🍂📖📖📚📚🧡👻🖤🍃🍃🍃🍂🍂🖤👻🧡🧡📚🍃🍃🍂📖📖📖📖📖🎃🍂🍃🍃📙📙🍃🍂👻🧡📚🧡👻🖤🖤
Would recommend Miss Marple series for the small town cozy mystery genre 🤍
