No 5 stars this month, but four 4.5 stars - Babel, Kingdom of Copper, The Lies I Tell, and Shadows of Self (rereading in prep for The Lost Metal. Mistborn Era 2 improves a lot on reread).

Please don't stop yourself saying the title of the book in French if the book was originally published in French. I always love it when you review French books i.e., Le Comte de Monte Cristo. BTW your hair looks incredible and long. Hope it doesn't bother you in that heat.

No one needs to be complaining about your background lol. It's totally cute and besides, you gotta do what you gotta do! August was a great month for me! I read and loved Pride & Prejudice and Once Upon a Broken Heart. I'm currently reading Kissing Tolstoy and I think I can finish it tonight - really enjoying it so far, but I'm still in the first half. Glad you had a successful month!

One five stars for me this month and it was.... A Prayer for the Crown-Shy, so cosy, so conforting, so good 😍 Second best was a biography of Anne de Bretagne - slightly random I know, but what a Queen she was!
I really like the new background and I am excited to see the final results for the other room!

Please DO NOT skip the first law standalone books!! First, they are some of Abercrombie’s best works (esp Best Seved Cold and The Heroes). Second, they round out the world and give it context and nuance. Third, events in the standalone books are relevant to the sequel trilogy (you will enjoy them MUCH MORE).

The best books I've read this month:
    - "Dawm" Octavia Butler
    - "Black Stone Heart" by Michael R. Fletcher
    - "Вони перемогли" Анастасії Федченко (sadly there's no English translation. Maybe one day)

So I was learning about Core Values and looking at certain words and randomly found Brené Brown through this quotation: “I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” 💕 I just loved it 🥰 it was exactly what I needed at the time. I’ve heard her book The Gifts of Imperfection is her best and it’s only about 140 pages so I’ll be reading it soon. There’s supposed to be some overlap with her books so don’t read them too close together 😊
Also, looking forward to the women medical mistreatment recs, I still have invisible women on my tbr (and radium girls if that counts in the category?)

I agree with you about Pachinko. Part 1 for me was 4.5 stars, Part 2 was 3.5, and Part 3 was 2 stars. And because I disliked Part 3 so much, it made me feel meh overall about the book, which is too bad because I thought Part 1 was so excellent.

I had a really good reading month (because I took some vacation time lol), and some of my faves were The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie, Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater, and The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. But the overarching focus of my month was reading The Way of Kings which I absolutely LOVED. Took me three weeks in between everything else, but I have immediately jumped into Words of Radiance.

I'm from Hungary and when I was in school we had to read a lot of russian literature and I honestly say that I probably couldn't even finish one. They are just so hard to read. I recently read two russian sci-fi books (from the same authorts) and I dnf those as well, seems like russian lit are just not for me.

"I never want to read it again" is often how I feel about my favorite books😂 Is Babel as graphic and intense as The Poppy War? I really enjoyed that series but it was so intense that I took long breaks between each book.

I had a pretty good month. Mostly older books - Welcome to the Goon Squad, The Secret Garden and Death on the Nile. All were pretty good comfort reads. I had to travel and read The Sanatarium on the plane - I don’t recommend. This has to be the dumbest thriller main character of all time, just making the worst possible decision at every moment.
Finishing off the month with Babel. I’m about 75% of the way through and predict it will be 4 stars for me. I have a few small gripes, mostly with the character dialogue being anachronistic enough that was distracting for me, but overall have enjoyed it a lot. I do expect this one to be divisive since it came with so much hype - it’s very heavy on the academia and pretty light on the fantasy. It’s more like historical fiction with some magic embellishment. I also expect some people will be unhappy with some character decisions that were made, but I did feel it made sense in the context of the story.

I have a niche interest in forensic and corpse science related books, so i'm currently reading "Corpse - Nature, Forensics and the Struggle to Pinpoint Time of Death" by Jessica Snyder Sachs. I'm reading it very slowly since i read before bed, and non fiction usually makes me read little at time since gives me sleepiness. But it is interesting and the part so far that is was more invest was forensic entomology (i'm a biologist working with insects, so it checks).

I just started listening to Babel, and it actually is pronounced Bay-bel! I’d learned about the Tower of Bah-bel, so I’m not sure why it was changed here. Is it Bay in French? A Latin root? Enjoying it as well, I’ll be interested to see what you think.

This month started so good for me! Unfortunately it didn't continue that way. The most disappointing was Black Sun. It was just... bland for me, especially the worldbuilding as there was basically none. Then I actually ended this month by DNFing two books in as many days: The Space Between Worlds (it was bad, I really don't get the hype) and The Luminous Dead (I wanted me some caving horror on another planet, instead I was bored to death). So yeah, now I'm scared of starting another book.
