I haven't gotten through as many books as you, but I would have to say my best was probably True Grit. I was going to say Good Morning, Midnight, but I think True Grit was more fun.
I’ve had a frustrating October book-wise, which I’m going to blame on The Haunted by Bentley Little. I finally gave up on it yesterday - too much sexual violence that didn’t contribute to much of anything except my annoyance. Best book I’ve read this month has been Beach Read by Emily Henry. Haven’t finished yet, but I trust her not to go completely off the rails. About to start either Mistborn or The Shadow of the Gods.
I feel like people mostly talk about factory farming with Tender is The Flesh, but I saw it as how horrific things get when humans start looking at others as so “other”, they cease seeing their humanity. I loved it.
Ayyy! I’m also dressing up as Wednesday Addams this year! And I just finished my reread of Thursday Murder Club and I feel the same way about. Going to reread the second book to see if it lives up to the 5 stars I gave it before
Happy Halloween! You are rocking that Wednesday costume! Perfect vibe for end of October. Definitely continue with Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series. The first was good and introduced the very likeable quartet of main characters. Second and third books were both even better, both 5-star reads for me.
The best book I ever read, not just this month, is 'the city of dreaming books' from Walter Moers. It's horror/fantasy (at least according to the author). It's about books, writing dinosaurs and a mysterious city, with lots of literature easter-eggs. I read it in the original language (German) but I would be interested in what you think about the translation 😄
AGAIN i have to say…I’m just DYING for you to pick up ORYX & CRAKE by Margaret Atwood!!! I want you to read more of Atwood in general but Oryx & Crake I reeeallly think you’ll like!!! I’m pretty sure u have the book on ur shelves/in ur stacks somewhere if I recall correctly & hasn’t been unhauled. Pleeeease add it to the list!
I was looking forward to hearing what you thought of Thursday Murder Club. I love Richard Osman as a tv presenter and I love mysteries so I’d hoped I’d love it but I was just bored. Since you’ve said the next 2 are supposed to be better so I think I will give them a try. Happy Halloween Wednesday!
I feel you on the romance so much! I am not a romance reader for exactly that reason, most of them just seem so unhealthy or toxic or unrealistic. Ugh. Queer romances seem to do it a bit better tho. I read "Love & other Disasters" by Anita Kelly earlier this year and liked it (not mindblowing, but good) and "Dripping" by Catherine Storm which is about 2 married women on a Greek island and that was good as well! Sooooo I guess there is hope? 😅
You did so well on October Emily so proud of you and take things one step at a time and stay your own pace always 🧡🍃🍃🧡🎃🎃🍃👻📖🖤🍁📖📖🍁📙🎃🎃👻🍂🍂🍃🧡🎃🎃🎃🍃👻🍂🍂🧡🎃🎃🎃🍃👻🍂🍂📚📚🍁🖤📖📖📖🖤🍁📚📙🎃🎃🧡🍃🍂🍂🍂🧡🎃🎃🎃🍃👻🍂📖📖📖🖤🍁📚📙📙📚🍁🍁
I LOVE Mansfield park. I can see why people won't like it - if you have a certain prejudice for the type of female lead you like and what we understand by "strength of character" that book can frustrate you. I also got frustrated and thought I wouldn't like it - for a while BUT the book called me out. I think I got what the book was trying to do, it changed my perspectives on things and that's why I ended up loving it. I thought it was one of her more mature books. In any case, regardless of how you feel about her books, it's always a delight to read her writing. I have yet to read Persuasion and people seem to either love it or just don't like it.
i have heard a lot about tender is the flesh in english speaking channels that i thought that was the original language hahaha, read it last year, gave it prob 4 or 5 stars, now im reading it in spanish! loved you liked it!
Glad you're having fun with Shards of Earth. The third in that series will come out next year. I think you mean the 3rd in the Children of Time series, Children of Memory. (It's his fault for writing two space operas trilogies at the same time, ah!) (I'm sure both are excellent, I've just decided to finish one series before starting the other one.)
I read Hard Candy after you mentioned it in a vlog and it was good! It reminded me of how I felt reading The Only Good Indians but I can't think of any good comps. I'm still learning what I like in horror and creepy kids are definitely on the list.
I love sense and sensibility. For me the book is about the sisters' relationship. I relate to Elianor so much. And I love the movie too. I actually prefer S&S to P&P
Emily you should try Phantoms by Dean Koontz. It was my favourite book for a long time, I felt really creeped out when I read it but I have to say I first read it when I was 14. I re-read it last year but I already knew what would happen so it didn't feel the same way but it's worth to try.
I felt exactly the same about sense and sensibility. I gave it 3 stars because JA's writing is great. Otherwise, I hated almost all the characters. If these people existed around me, I would more towns.
I'm sending you a bunch of wholesome romance recs! Radiance by Grace Draven (fantasy romance, paranormal) Accidentally Amy by Lynn Painter (contemporary romcom, fall themed) The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton (historical romcom, fantasy, witchy-pirates) A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn (historical romance, mystery, *very different than "Killers...") Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater (historical romance, fantasy/faery)
Since you are interested in SF Horror and translated works, I’d like to recommend you “Cursed Bunny” by Bora Chung. It’s a short story collection and has a catchy first sentence. It’s still on my TBR but I’d like your thoughts on it!
I think you can do most of the cast of the Addams Family; Morticia, Wednesday, and cousin It (during the pandemic when you had your hair down to your waist).
I really loved Wolfsong by TJ Klune (pretty sure it's not something you would enjoy) and In my dreams I hold a knife by Ashley Winstead. I know the main character is pretty polarising but I thought she was epic. So if you're in the mood for a fun OTT thriller with an unlikable main character (that's not an alcoholic, she has other issues...) I would definitely recommend.
I think you would enjoy "The Trouble With Hating You" by Sajni Patel. Despite the fact it's a romance, it's not a cliched romance, and the characters act like actual human beings. Their interactions and reactions are genuine. And the only sex scene is fade to black. Definitely a breath of fresh air. I mean, if you're looking for romances to stand behind. :P
I like Keigo Higashino’s books. But I like The Newcomer, Journey under the Midnight Sun, and A Midsummer Equation better than The Devotion of Suspect X. You might want to try reading those. And I also think The Devotion of Suspect X is dry. The ones I mention are slightly better :)
I read "Tender is the flesh" Last month and loved it. But I would not really recommend it to anyone. :-D Tbh, I did not care about them eating humans that much, the most shocking thing for me were the dogs and puppies... I cried! Such a good horror/dystopian book.
When the Tiger Came down the Mountain by Nghi Vo was a lot better for me. It's a much more cohesive story (also very short). Book 3 just came out and I can't wait to get to it!
I agree with you on the romances in Sense and Sensibility. I thought Elinor and Colonel Brandon would have made a much better couple. I didn't remember the plot at all from the movie and thought that was the direction the story was going in, but nope. Maybe the story makes more sense in the context of the times.
Try “Later” by Stephen King. I know you don’t really enjoy SK books, esp endings. I completely understand. But try Later which in a way was a horror. I read it without knowing what it’s about and it’s a very pleasant surprise.
I also read Tender is the Flesh then The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches right after for a palate cleanser right after this month. I felt the same way about both books! I wanted to love Irregular Witches but it fell so flat for me.
Sense and Sensibility spoilers. I loved the first half, but the second half was rough. Eleanor was my favorite character, and the stepsister in law was my least favorite, or maybe Willoughby (hard to pick they were both awful). The two things that annoyed me the most where that Willoughby got semi redeemed, and it made absolutely no sense why Robert and Lucy got together. Overall I gave it a 3.5, maybe that's because it was my first Jane Austen (shamefully). What narrator did you get? I got Rosamund Pike and I thought she was very good.
Best book iv read this october is The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones.really injoyed this book alot will be reading My heart is a chainsaw also by him as well.
I've only seen a bit of it but have you watched the show The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window? It's a deadpan comedy with Kristen Bell making fun of all those alcoholic unreliable narrator thriller books/movies.
I thought "The Woman in the Library" ended quite abruptly and it took me 25% of "The Thursday Murder Club" to get into it then the end just felt like sequel bait.
What's the best book you've read in October?
Salem’s Lot 🧛🏼♂️
The End Of Eddy!
I haven't gotten through as many books as you, but I would have to say my best was probably True Grit. I was going to say Good Morning, Midnight, but I think True Grit was more fun.
Hidden pictures by J. Rekulak.
I’ve had a frustrating October book-wise, which I’m going to blame on The Haunted by Bentley Little. Haven’t finished yet, but I trust her not to go completely off the rails. About to start either Mistborn or The Shadow of the Gods.
Yes! Let's stop the discrimination against childless people. We need more role models without kids in books😄
So far the only positive representation I’ve seen was in Book Lovers ( a romance book too!)
@@BookswithEmilyFox I'm not too big on romance, but might check that one out. Thank you for the recommendation😍
This!! ^^^^^^^
IN LOVE WITH THE WEDNESDAY COSTUME! so cute
I feel like people mostly talk about factory farming with Tender is The Flesh, but I saw it as how horrific things get when humans start looking at others as so “other”, they cease seeing their humanity. I loved it.
The Wednesday costume is adorable!
The cover of The Last is so pretty! I like the purple sky. 😊
You make a wonderful Wednesday! I like THE LAST book cover! My favorite of the books you talked about are The Last and Tender is the Flesh.
I really dont think the THE LAST cover is as bad as you made it seem? 😩 The Kindred cover immediatly comes to mind as the worst cover of all time
Ayyy! I’m also dressing up as Wednesday Addams this year!
And I just finished my reread of Thursday Murder Club and I feel the same way about. Going to reread the second book to see if it lives up to the 5 stars I gave it before
I can only imagine the lady's reaction when you open the door in that costume Emily 🤣🤣🤣 I bet you're the main topic in the party that she went to.
I loooove your outfit !!!🥰
Your outfit gives me Wednesday Addams vibes and I love it ✨🥺❤️
That's the costume lol
@@BookswithEmilyFox still love it ❤️
Love your Wednesday Addams look! 🖤
The Wednesday outfit is great!
Thank you! I was getting discouraged that people weren’t realizing it was a costume 😂
Happy Halloween! You are rocking that Wednesday costume! Perfect vibe for end of October. Definitely continue with Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series. Was about to have breakfast so perfect timing. Happy Sunday Emily
This costume is too perfect!
Gotta use that forehead ;)

Verity & Sour Candy were my favorite October books. But I'm also in the middle of The Push and it's perfectly creepyyyyy! ;D
xx
Good luck with reading Mansfield Park! You might find it a little bit rough in the beginning, but its better towards the end.
13, good number for October!

"Shards of earth" is awesome!
Shards of Earth! Yay! Gonna be honest, the beginning was slow to grip me but the story was worth it)
I LOVE Mansfield park. I love sense and sensibility. For me the book is about the sisters' relationship. I relate to Elianor so much. And I love the movie too. I actually prefer S&S to P&P
I agree! JA is great at writing sisters
Emily you should try Phantoms by Dean Koontz. It was my favourite book for a long time, I felt really creeped out when I read it but I have to say I first read it when I was 14. I re-read it last year but I already knew what would happen so it didn't feel the same way but it's worth to try.
Healthy romances? Get A Life, Chloe Brown!
I loved the audiobook of The Woman and the Library. It was pretty good book too.
I felt exactly the same about sense and sensibility. I gave it 3 stars because JA's writing is great. Otherwise, I hated almost all the characters. If these people existed around me, I would more towns.

The Thursday Murder Club was ok, the second book I'm flying through. Now I'll grab the third for sure.

The only Halloweeny book I read was Cackle and I didn't enjoy it but maybe it was because my expectations were too high
I never noticed the woman without kids being such an indicator but now that you mention it's SO prevalent lol
You should read: The Memory Police. Breathtaking.
I read "Tender is the flesh" Last month and loved it. But I would not really recommend it to anyone. :-D
Tbh, I did not care about them eating humans that much, the most shocking thing for me were the dogs and puppies... I cried!

Have you tried stay awake by Megan goldin?
I read it this month thought it was pretty good.
Looks like a domestic thriller but it's not
I’m convinced Jane Austin was a time traveler, she was way ahead of her time.
Try “Later” by Stephen King. I know you don’t really enjoy SK books, esp endings. I completely understand. But try Later which in a way was a horror. I read it without knowing what it’s about and it’s a very pleasant surprise.

I haven't seen but I had heard the title lol
I know you're a huge channel and all, but if you want more horror recs I have been a booktuber for over 10 yrs, and review a lot.
Pretty sure the lady at the door was stunned by how adorable you look! 🖤 I do prefer a pretty cover. I'm shallow that way ☺️
There's a new Wednesday Addams show coming to Netflix in a week or two , and the girl from The Orphan is named Esther BTW
I thought "The Woman in the Library" ended quite abruptly and it took me 25% of "The Thursday Murder Club" to get into it then the end just felt like sequel bait.
What edition of Sense and Sensibility is that? It’s so pretty 😭
Vintage Classics!
I DNFed the empress of salt and I know it’s short but it wasn’t doing anything for me so I stopped 😬
You're so cute as Wednesday Adams ☺️😍
❤️📚
Colonel Brandon 🥰🥰🥰
Yeah I agree that the “romance” in sense and sensibility is prettt underwhelming….
I loved all the books you didn’t 😂
Last book. Last Time I Saw You
Love your costume! You're so cute! ❤❤❤
It's not the translation, Japanese literature just tends to be dry. Murakami is the exception, not the rule lol
Good to know!
I’m a huge Jane Austen fan and I need to say this: do not read Mansfield Park - it is so bad and I literally don’t know anyone who liked it 😅
But it's the last one I haven't read XD
