Most hated trope is definitely SA that leads to the protagonist’s, usually female, character arc.
“I was weak and now I’m tough and can protect myself” 🙄
It inadvertently places the blame of the SA on the victim suggesting had she been stronger this wouldn’t have happened…

Omg another Peeta lover! I loved him too. I don’t get why so many people were Team Gale. Peeta was just such a sweet and nice guy to Katniss and that’s what she deserved. His amnesia broke me too 😫

Oh man, the list of tropes I hate is long 😅
    1) enemies to lovers (friends to lovers can be irritating too, but I like this trope better)
    2) the chosen one and not like other girls/guys (I feel like these two often go hand in hand)
    3) love triangles
    4) the dumb jock/ dumb blonde
    5) school bullying
    6) the fat friend who only gets together with another fat person
    7) trophy wife
    8) misguided dad
    9) damsel in distress
    10) alternatively, the complete opposite of damsel in distress where the main character is just the most badass person ever and never has feelings
    11) genius who learns everything miraculously fast
    12) supernatural beings who have a child that happens to be the powerful being on earth
    13) ugly duckling to beauty (Can we normalize normal looking people please?)
    14) saving the world
    15) good vs evil (no one is 100% good or 100% evil)
    16) unexplained resurrection!! I hate plot armor. If a writer wants to put their characters in danger but nothing ever happens, this is so incredibly boring and predictable and lazy. Readers/viewers are not going to take danger seriously.

oh man! its been so long since ive read one that I forgot all about the chosen one! especially when they need to save the planet, and they get distracted because the OBVIOUSLY EVIL prince glanced at them once, and now they're MADLY IN LOVE and get captured. lol

The best "Reluctant to save the world/fight" series I've read was Prince of Fools. Jalan is one of my fave characters ever, cause he's hilarious. And also up till the end he never changed his attitude of "duck this"😆

Regarding the WoT and the chosen one trope:
I think it works really well, because while it starts out very classicly, the way that it impacts and affects him, and the ways he reacts to this status are not what I would expect from a classic chosen one. He really goes on a 14-book arc were his feelings and actions regarding this chosen one status are shifting so much.

The open ending/lazy ending is my main problem with Stephen King. The man CAN write, he just can’t wrap things up.
I read the whole Dark Tower series just for it to finish with “The man in black walked across the desert and the gunslinger followed” 🤦‍♂️

Honestly, I hate most tropes just because they’re predictable and overdone. But, like you said, if it’s done right, then it’s totally worth it. I really like when writers play the reader/viewer with a trope and then switch it up to make it hilarious. Like in K-dramas where the female lead trips, and then the male lead catches her (c’mon, can anyone name a K-drama where that _hasn’t_ happened? 😂). But I’ve seen a few K-dramas that switched it up where the male lead either won’t catch her, or will catch her and then drop her because he’s nervous or something. Tricks the viewer and makes it hilarious

@@BookswithEmilyFox Tomorrow touches on a whole lot of sensitive subjects that you don’t even see in a lot of Western media. I really liked it. And Red Sleeve! I don’t want to spoil Red Sleeve but it is SO GOOD. It is somewhat based on real events that the author expanded upon, so if you don’t want spoilers, don’t read up about the real events (I made this mistake 😳) Red Sleeve absolutely broke me. And Doom at Your Service, but you’ve already seen that one 🤗 all three of these are incredibly emotional and heartfelt

Not sure it's a trope or not but I absolutely hate it when the mc is being told how good/kind/special they are. I don't care whether it's shown as such or not but if every character in the book keeps saying stuff like this I'll literally notice nothing else (looking at you House in the Cerulean Sea)

  • @onfaerystories
    @onfaerystories 2 года назад

Omg I love the concept of this video! I can't remember if you've read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, but if you did, what did you think of the ending? Because I felt a bit disappointed, but it actually changed when I reread the first two chapters. I've watched the most recent adaptation, and though most choices they made really annoyed as it didn't make sense in many ways, their choice of ending was just perfect in my opinion, and I would have loved it if it was in the actual book.
I wonder if the humor in The Martian would work for me as I've heard mixed reviews. The main critique was that the main character was way too optimistic in the situation he was in, to the point that it felt like if there was no balance.
Also, I agree about Peeta, you now make me want to reread these books just for him. 🥴 And the trope you mentioned reminded me of 1984 by George Orwell. Have you read it? It worked for me both times as it was actually
    *HUGE SPOILER*
brainwashing by the government, and so very dystopian in nature.

I hate the The One trope because it just annoys me like I get it you’re the main character but I also want them to be unspecial (?). And i absolutely detest the virgin maiden trope; when the femme mc is always a virgin and pure but the masc mc is NOT but that doesn’t seem to matter as much as their counterpart being a virgin, especially when they’re like “I’ll make you MINE and ONLY MINE” YUCK

I've read Shadow and Bone trilogy a long time ago, but as I remember it, not using her powers made Alina look sick rather than ugly. You know like when you've been ill for a long time - you look pale, have dark circles under eyes, acne, dull hair - stuff like that. So for grishas, using their powers make them look healthy. Not like they start to look like a completely different beautiful person.

I don't know if this is a trope but in YA, whenever a boy comes along and they are immediately objectified by the female protagonist as being handsome with chiseled chin, abs for days, tanned skin. And heeeere is our love interest lovely.

Tropes I hate are unreliable narrator if it’s drugs or alchohol. I could see myself loving it if it was something actually interesting. I agree with you with my hatred of miscommunication. Also hate it when the two characters fall in love. Say it to each other. And then for absolutely no reason both go insane with insecurity about their relationship. Like. What?! Everything’s totally fine. Why you trippin?! Just being dramatic to ruin a good thing. Ugh. I’m looking at…….

I think the reason Peeta's suddenly revealed change towards Katniss works so well in the Hunger Games series is that it leaves it up to the reader to imagine what level of torture/brainwashing was necessary to effect such a drastic change. Also, I initially wasn't crazy about the open ending of To Be Taught If Fortunate after loving the rest of the novella, but I'll admit that story has definitely stuck with me.

And then her unecessary romance would notice because he always saw thru her bs….
