I 100% disagree with Roman about it being less expensive to buy a brand new car over a used car.
3 years ago, I spent 3 months researching and ultimately buying a replacement for my Subaru Legacy.
I wanted a mid-sized 7 passenger SUV that could tow at least 3500lb. We live on a 43 acre lot and do a lot of deep snowy driving in the winter so 4 wheel drive would be very nice to have.
I looked at many vehicles including Highlanders, MDXs, Durangos, Tahoes, Explorers, etc.
New most of these were in the $70,000 to $85,000 Cdn.
Including depreciation these would cost us roughly $30,000 in total over the next 3 years.
In the end, I bought a 2006 Highlander Hybrid Limited for $4800 Cdn and another $2300 fixing a few things (tires, thermostat & rear brakes). I also just replaced the front brakes for $700.
I could sell it tomorrow for $5000, so my cost had been roughly $3000 over 3 years.
Sure I'm not driving a new vehicle, but it is still very luxurious and well optioned and there is no way I could drive a new vehicle for anywhere near $1000 per year.
It would cost me 10x more to be driving a new vehicle and the savings are so enormous there is no way I believe anyone could save by buying new.

Right, that's $7200 in one year. While it might not make sense for all older cars, on a reliable, well-kept, older car. As a diy, half of that amount or even the equivalent could be true for 5 years or more of owning that older car. If things aren't looking great on that buy, you can also sell it closer to the original price than you would a new car after depreciation

Enjoyed the conversation. I have two places that I can take my vehicles to that will not rip me off here in Virginia Beach. One of the shops is across the street from where I work. Fortunately, I drive a 2015 Nissan Frontier that has not had anything major go wrong with it. Only brakes, tires, annual inspection, and oil changes are needed. I get the oil and tires from Costco with free rotations, and oil filters from Napa. My 17-year-old granddaughter, supervised by her father did my brakes in our detached garage with vehicle lift . I hope that Nissan brings back the manual shift when they come out with the new Hard Body truck.

Is VA Beach still bad? I remember, when I was stationed there in the 80’s, so many shops in the Tidewater area were predatory against young servicemen. I learned to take it to Emporia or South Hill (went deer hunting at a friend’s place, so it wasn’t always out of the way). I only got 1 smog inspection in the Tidewater area, and they gouged me,on a pretty new car. Out on 58, in the country, there was never a hassle.

Folks, I enjoyed this show a lot, thank you. I must say I do agree with Nathan in two comments. First, new cars are so expensive it is important keeping the car you have longer and paying for repairs is cheaper. People do not have the luxury of knowing they will have an income for the next five years. It is harder to commit a large monty car payment. Second, I do have both an electric Nissan and hybrid Lexus. Both of them are very reliable. People are not really against electric cars. The charging problems (Taking too long) and, limited range is an huge issue. Also they are more expensive compare to ICE cars. If they have less moving part they should be cheaper then ICE cars, which is not the case today. When the solid state, fast charging batteries hit the market, then we will start to see the real switch imho.

    • @jamesbeaman6337

I agree with most of this except “People are not really against electric cars”. Many people are flat against them due to politics and mandates by certain gov’t entities that are making people feel forced to drive something they don’t want to.

    • @KemApak
      @KemApak 2 месяца назад

@@jamesbeaman6337 Absolutely you are right, what I meant people are not against the concept of electric cars. They are not cheap, they have range limitations, battery replacements are extremely expensive, there is no fast charging or enough charging infrastructure. They do not financially, and functinoality wise make sense yet (except California and some other states where gas is extremely expensive). They are not ready to replace ICE cars yet. Government should not force people or the manufacturers. If we live in a free society, we should have free markets too. I am with you 100%.

The oldest is a 2004 expedition I bought new, it's got 90k miles on it, it's never ever had to go into the shop for anything besides regular maintenance. My other two are just as reliable. I'll buy a new Ramcharger, and keep that as long as possible too.

I agree Roman about things you touch. A key, steering wheel, door handles and window switches are things I touch and when theyre a cheap plastic, it makes me feel like they skip on the rest of the car’s quality. Right? If you can’t spend the time to put a decent steering wheel in, how do I know you didn’t cheap out on things I cant see. Agreed as well on the electric chairs on both sides.
Secondly, I know it probably drives poorly but I love a sleeper… the Chrysler 300 you mentioned at the beginning would be a fun car I’d want for fun. Same with the Pontiac G8 GT or Chevy SS.
Lastly I don’t agree about the ownership. I’ve owned a 2006 Acura TL until 165K miles, 2008 Acura TL Type S for 222K miles, 2011 Acura RDX for 170K miles. 😊

Regarding the Roman rant about why car manufacturers don't use better quality materials and don't include lumbar support. In the past, car manufacturers used to build a full sized version of the interior. I think I heard stories about employees at car companies stopping by the car model and sitting in it, then giving their opinions on what they like and dislike. But at some point it became cheaper and easier to design everything on a computer, and car manufacturers don't build a physical test model of the interior. When everything is designed on a computer, the priority is looks, not function. When I bought a 2016 Base Canyon, I thought it would be a better version of the Sonoma. My previous truck (2002 Sonoma) was extremely comfortable, like it was designed around the driver with lumbar support. But the 2016 Base Canyon has seats that look good but are very hard, and they don't have lumbar support. I have to sit at an angle with my right ear by the headrest because the headrest sticks out too far, and I can't rest my head on it. My only option to get comfortable seats with lumbar support is to buy aftermarket seats for $2000. The driver seat has power adjustment, and the passenger seat is manual. So, to get manual seat brackets, I am looking at old Bronco manual brackets. I don't understand how an older truck like the 2002 Sonoma interior was 10 times more comfortable and user-friendly compared to the Canyon. Everything in the Canyon interior seems off by 2-3 inches. The armrest is too high which pushes my shoulder up and creates tension in my left shoulder. The controls on the dash aren't in arms reach so I must lean forward and to the right to reach everything. With the push back against electric vehicles for me part of the problem is that where I live in winter the temperature drops down to minus 45 degrees Celsius and even diesel vehicles have trouble starting. But the biggest problem I have with new vehicles, both gas and electric, is that car manufacturers are not building the type of vehicle that I want. There are a couple of new vehicles that I am partially interested in but most of the options and packages that car manufacturers force on consumers are features that I don't want and refuse to buy a vehicle that has certain features. My 2016 Canyon has a manual transmission that was only available with a 4-cylinder engine. I like having a manual transmission, but I hate 4-cylinder engines in a truck. The 4-cylinder is underpowered and struggles to move the weight of the truck. You can add a turbo, but then to pull a trailer, you need a second or bigger turbo, and the motor is always being pushed hard. I hate cylinder deactivation (Displacement On Demand), and I hate direct injection because both cause engine problems. Before buying the Canyon I planned to replace the the stock engine with a Vortec port injected 4.3L engine and a Tremic transmission. The 4.3L V6 is a reliable engine known for its longevity and performance. With proper maintenance, the engine should last for an easy ten years and well over 150k miles.

Consumer reports car reliability has always been weird. I trust they are honest with their data but there is a self selecting property to it. So those with issue or dissatisfaction report. And those proud or happy may report. I had a 2nd gen Prius that I put 250,000 miles on and had no issues. But I have had very little issues with Chevy, Toyota, Ford, and Dodge over 30 years. 😉

take consumer reports with a big grain of salt, when the 08 altima came out they gave it consumers choice . that's what made my grand mother bought it i guess , or just off the wim .. any how 89k miles roof rails leak in the car, clunks bad and only gets 19 mpg.
another issue 98 subarus have engine good heating /cooling good ...hmm really good . both of my moms subarus blew head gasket. how ever the 2.2 had oil in coolant so that was odd, the 04 had previous work done but always had a vibration.

What I don't understand is why more car manufacturers don't allow you add features À la carte. I hate the whole concept of trim level. I think it would be so much nicer if you could just buy a base model and just add whatever you want. I don't see why leather seats have to be tied to a bigger screen and a bunch of extra cameras. Also it makes no sense that car manufacturers tend to differentiate trim levels with tech. Tech is probably the cheapest part of any car but for some reason just adding a bunch of low resolution cameras or a slightly larger screen adds $8,000 - $10,000 to the price of the car.

I couldn't disagree more with Roman on the value of fixing older cars. I currently own a 2002 Chevy Tahoe with just over 200,000 miles on it. It has been super reliable and still has a ton of life left in it. Even if I had to make major repairs, keeping it on the road has much more value to me than buying a newer one. I also own a 98 TJ Wrangler and a 98 Dodge Durango. Both of those cars have been very reliable for me too. All three are easy to work on. Parts are cheap. I guarantee that I spend a lot less on my cars in a given year than most new car owners spend on payments and I generally have a relatively trouble free experience with my vehicles. I probably have less invested in all three vehicles than the average down payment on these new $60,000 trucks. I love my older vehicles. They do everything I need them to do.

CR mentioned the complexity of the electrical and mechanical systems but also mentioned that for most manufacturers with the exception of Toyota, the implementation hybrid systems is relatively new tech. Therefore the reliability issues. As with Tesla in the all electric field, Toyota has been a pioneer in the development of reliable hybrid systems. They sold their first Prius in 1997.

I will also say yes, there are some feature (for a given price) that should not be missing. for example, if you are paying $55k for a car it should have a speedo and it should have a turn signal stock. the only reason it would be acceptable for that car not have it would be if it's clear the cost went somewhere else like a carbon fiber body.

30:25 not so sure this applies anymore. also, what you are seeing is "anti-right to repair" manifesting itself.
basically manufactures don't want you taking their car to any place else other than their repair shops to get it fixed. why? because they make more money that way.
it's also part of the reason every car has ditched the double din unit for a screen. because they know you will have to fix it at some point and because so much of the car is in that screen, you will have to come to them to replace it.

Roman's totally off base about maintaining an old car. It absolutely depends on the car. Simpler is better. I have 2 E36 BMWs. One has been the most reliable car I've ever owned and has over 150k. The other has been a complete disaster, yet has barely over 100k. Neither one of them has cost anywhere near the price of a new 3 series. You'd have to put more down on a lease than it cost for a new head on my 325. After 7 months of payments, you've already spent more than I did to buy it cash. Used means cheaper insurance, cheaper registration, not tied to expensive dealerships for service, etc. The only cost benefits of new is better efficiency and whatever routine maintenance might be covered. For my cars, those things aren't that frequent or expensive, even to have a German specialist do it.

The batteries last easily over 150k. They get enough extra miles per gallon to buy replacements in 80-120k miles compared to their gas counterparts. There is a reason camry hybrid and prius are the most used taxi and delivery vehicles.

Newer cars with a 100 computers are not reliable. I buy and sell used cars and stay away from late model cars. So many electrical problems. If you ask real mechanics all what these guys claim to be good are problematic in the long run. The Prius should not be used as a refence point to made on the trucks as that is new tech that's uncharted territory for durability and reliability for the long run and serve completely 2 different purposes. Also in general people just don't want to drive these period and I hate how reviewers use there status to sway people to make a dumb purchase because they "FEEL" it should be fine.
