This is something I started to notice when we purchased my wife's Subaru Forester. We were looking at BMWs, Lexus, range rovers, even a Jaguar, for a family wagon basically. Honestly the only thing I found that was hard to find in any vehicle Is cooling seats. That seems to be something that you have to pay a pretty penny for, beyond that we were finding the same options with the The same warranties between Volvo and Subaru, with the only difference being the Volvo average $20,000 more for the same options. That's a large part of the reason why we end up with a Subaru, beyond the fact that I love their all-wheel drive system and their flat four is a tank if you take care of it!
Honestly plug in hybrid is great for people with certain lifestyles. Someone like me who drives 80% highway, 15,000 mi every year minimum, a plug-in hybrid wouldn't work for someone like me. On the flip side, my biggest concern with a non plug-in hybrid is the warranty of the battery. I've owned a Honda Accord hybrid and that thing legitimately got 700 mi to a tank, 42 mi to gallon. It was crazy! Only downside is when the battery started to go The AC compressor was tied into the battery system, and the vehicle would prioritize the vehicle battery over the AC compressor. We were having trouble getting the dealership to replace the battery because they were trying to point at a new AC compressor which at 90,000 mi isn't covered under warranty. So depending on your warranty and on how that specific hybrid functions, they can be great, but it's really mostly based on who the owner is and what their lifestyle is like. That being said, I'll be sticking with my EcoDiesel Wrangler for a long time!
You guys should go to Norway and do a week long EV series. They are doing it right when it comes to EVs vs ICE. Plus you can see what EV options exist in a market that is not implement 100% EV tariffs.
I have no prejudice against EVs but... I have one car and live in an apartment. The charging issue makes an EV unworkable. Even with added charging stations in the neighborhood I am not enthused about sitting around (away from home) for 1/2 to an hour. If battery tech improves to make charging like gassing up and charging stations are more abundant, than an EV could be had. Let's face it, an EV is a lifestyle, and the car has more control of your daily life whereas with gas it's the other way around.
I have to call a foul when I hear people calling weight concerns when it comes to bridges and roads. Before you say BS maybe talk to a civil engineer and educate yourselfs on the stresses concrete and asphalt suffer under load and how that affects the structural longevity and streeses the bridges were designed for. I get it one CT one affect but if we keep on this trend of heavy cars this will need to be address. It's just physics not politics.
I am curious about your comment. Last year, in an interview, I spoke to a representative from CalTrans who is responsible for highway and bridge safety. I put the question to him, and he said it was all about the mass and footprint of the vehicle. Having 9,000 - lbs Hummer EVs concerned him, but 5,000 - lbs Teslas didn't. What's your take?
Great content guys - by the way, just picked up a brand new Tacoma (shout out Ryan@Fred Haas) pretty much just like yours. BUT - also buying a Tesla Model3 Performance (24) to go with it, the best of both worlds IMHO. I still feel like hybrids are silly - battery electric works fine if you have a garage and know their limitations.
If my state would install charging stations and if it becomes affordable to have a charging station in my garage, I would switch to an EV. Right now, I have to investigate getting another car soon.
More choice is the best thing about America. The vehical market will adjust to the peoples choice. Yes goverment will try to nudge it to what it thinks is best in the long run. Time will tell. I'm 4th generation Colorado native and my parents regularly drove to Denver to visit family. I remember riding in the car and seeing the smog, then smelling it as we got closer in the 1970s. ICE regulation was not popular then but it did improve the quality of life, especially for those living in metropolitan areas. I still see classic vehicles on the roads and thats because people have the choice to keep them but regulation mandated new vehicles be made a certain way and people made the choice to move on. Car makers had to adapt in order to stay in business and most successful did. Same thing is happening now with electrification and other forms of power. I hope in 50 years we can look back and say it was a good thing. I also hope to see classic vehicals still around for those who made the choice to keep them.
Fact is everyone is different and has different needs in their vehicles. There’s something for everyone. Don’t bash on each other’s wants in vehicles. And I don’t think we’ll ever go fully EV. If so that’ll be a heck of a long way away imo.
29:36 I like to think I do, although I will admit I do have an "anti-tesla" bias that slips in. But I will say it slips in, at least in part, because they have "bad credit" in my mind, backed up by a long history of bs and doing questionable things.
30:07 I didn't get that exact response, but one person who was looking for a new car said they didn't want an EV specifically because "they feel like they are being forced to buy one" Which I can understand their feelings on it.
41:37 I will say that the bridge issue is significant, although it's exaggerating a problem that was already there. Specifically that large sections of our country's infrastructure is shockingly out of date. If you knew how many bridges score a 1 out of 100 on the quality index, you'd never drive over another bridge again.
42:01 if it were ANY other EV I would agree with you. However given what a mess the launch of this thing has been, and that it's a "software defined vehicle" (man I hate that phrase) I would be shocked if it doesn't become a like a used Maserati grand Turismo where there's so many things to deal with, most people just don't bother. I will say that because the motors and batteries are so robust, and the only additional thing someone needs to run the drivetrain is a speed controller, these things would be great to cannibalize for kit cars.
51:40 because hydrogen weighs way less than batteries. also adding range for an FCEV is WAY cheaper than adding range in a BEV. now the problem with FCEVs is that power is expensive. you serious don't want to know what a megawatt fuel cell stack costs.
I thing there is no reason to not do hybrid for everyday new vehicles today as the stop gap. Hygroen in a vehicle makes no sense, the freezing problem Tommy showed sealed it for me that hydrogen should be used as a generator for the grid or remote charging stations as we move to full EV.
So Roman doesn’t think a Coupe can be a luxury vehicle because it isn’t meant for a chauffeur driving an executive around in the back?

I used to drive ICE cars but no more.. tired of spending so much on maintenance and repairs..going forward EV;s are the way to go..so if your concerned with $ then buy an EV
No we cannot handle the higher demand of EV’s as the issue isn’t the grid, the issue is manpower. We have a massive amount of power generating plants that are peakers, the problem is when you convert those plants to constant production. When you make that change, the maintenance intervals are reduced and companies like MD&A, GE, etc have a limited amount of employees to perform that maintenance. To increase power generation we need to significantly increase the number of Field Engineers and Millwrights that don’t mind traveling 10-11 months of the year away from their family. That work 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. Power generation, transmission, are not the issue, the issue is major maintenance, always has been, always will be and we have a society that is not replacing our skilled trades
Some form of hydrogen is probably the future, but we aren't there yet...In the meantime, I think the hybrid non-plugins are the current future for people in most regions. Although we are bankrupting the country to make EVs the norm, we are not ready to abandon petroleum.

FORGET about the issue of GovnT forcing you to buy an EV....The market will determine what will survive.. Ev's are superior to Ice cars.. for all of the reasons mentioned..

The Lexus is the more appealing, logical and practical choice. However it should be the gasoline only version because of the price.
