Irene, I just watched your video with your 3 new hats. They are all.quite lovely. For a Gray Newbie (as You call yourself) I'm happy to see that you certainly are doing your research! Since my previous comment wont help you.. Like you said earlier, if my preious comment helps just 1 person that would be awesome. I just dont want anyone to make the mis-steps I did and get set back. As you know, Gray hair transitioning takes long enough.. We certainly dont need it to take any longer than it already naturally does.

Hello Irene, I'm Gina from New York. Thank you so much for sharing, so kind + thoughtful of you.
I'm now 7 months into my Gray Hair Transition. I just stopped Cold Turkey on November 2nd. I'm not going to lie, I was frustrated with the process at first. In the past month, I'm enjoying the transition + learning alot along the way. As your gray hair grows, you become more confident.
I hit a few speed bumps along the way.
Please allow me to share with you what I've learned.
Not just product colors should be clear or white! ALWAYS READ THE INGREDIENTS LABEL! I was very disappointed to find out that my favorite conditioner that is white colored AND my leave in conditioner that is also white colored BOTH had a DYE Ingredient in them: YELLOW #5 which stained my white hair to a Yellow Color! I've tried Everything to remove it (Baking Soda mixed with Shampoo + Conditioner, Purple Shampoo + Conditioner, Hydrogen Peroxide Recipie that removes yellow from hair, Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse, etc.) and it lightened a bit but has not returned to the original white. I'm thankful the gray was not affected.
Also: now that its summer especially, Start using a Shampoo + Conditioner with UV Protection (I bought Loreal Everpure Moisturizing Shampoo + Conditioner and also bought Loreal Everpure UV Protect Spray.) You need to protect your gray + white hair from the sun, or it will turn yellow. Of course the other option is to Always wear a hat while you are outdoors, which just isn't for me. Although last week when I was mowing my lawn I put a scarf on.
When using a blow dryer or any hot tools, ALWAYS use the lowest setting + ALWAYS use a Heat Protection Spray. Once you burn your hair, NOTHING will get it out, except growing it out again or cutting it.
I have very thick, course curly hair and I since I never used it before when I was brunette, I wasn't used to using a Heat Protection Spray.
I usually let my hair air dry but one day I decided I'd style the bangs with my Curling Iron. I burned the ends and they turned yellow. My hairdresser of over 20 years said I'm lucky I have alot of hair thats strong + it didn't break off. So I had the last inch of my bangs cut off to remove the dark yellow color, since there's absolutely nothing that can be done to fix it.
When I started this process I had very long hair down to my butt that I didn't want to part with. I'm 54 now + have had long hair my whole life.
So I tried to color match it. I had the brunette dye removed from my hair, bleached it + had it colored gray to match my natural gray. Unfortunately the gray only lasted 2 weeks + started to yellow (from the conditioner + leave in conditioner with the Yellow #5 Dye in them).
So I just left my hair blonde, had my hairdresser cut it to my bra strap + started over growing my gray hair out, which was November 2nd. My original date I stopped dying my hair was March 3, 2023. Last Wednesday I had my hairdresser cut my hair to shoulder length, to get closer to having my hair all gray. That's the shortest I'm willing to cut it. I decided I'm going to cut it every 6-8 weeks from now on, til I get there.
I truly wish you the best of luck with your gray hair transition.

Hi, I am 8 weeks into my grow out journey, I decided to grow out my hair because I feel like my hair is thinning more & more because of the coloring, not to mention I am going to be 63 soon, I was a late bloomer didn't start getting gray until my late 40's or early 50's, I still don't have much gray in the back of may head, it's mostly just the front and temples, I am a brunette but was coloring my hair a light to medium brown with blonde to brassy highlights, I have long hair not a fan of short hair but am considering going shorter to my shoulders, I too will need to learn how to keep it looking fresh and gray or silver. I am still learning as well, Thank you for the educational tips as I too love to use my Blow dryers & flat iron tools.

I started growing out my gray hair 1 year after Covid. It’s been 2 years now and I am loving the color. In the beginning my roots were snow white. As it grew out, the hair that frames my face is a silvery gray/white and the back of my head has taken longer to catch up and is more salt & pepper. I see this color “pattern” in many women transitioning to their natural gray hair. I love it and get many compliments. I found that gray hair takes a lot more care and work than the my brown dyed hair. My hair stylist suggested I get a water filter for my shower head to prevent all the hard minerals wreaking havoc on my hair and turning it to funky yellow and green. It helps a lot and my hair feels much softer. I also never use a cotton pillowcase since it can cause hair breakage. I bought several silk pillowcases and also a silk sleep bonnet. In the winter, due to my electric base board heating, my hair is extremely dry. I got a really good hair mask that I leave in for 10 minutes in the shower and even 2 or more hours when I’m hanging around the house and it is now a must have for my hair care routine; it is called Shu Uemura Ultimate Reset. A great clarifying shampoo is L’Oreal Professional Metal Detox. Kerastase is also a wonderful line. A nice purple shampoo is Barcelona Pulp Riot. I use that for toning and brightening my gray, but I leave it on no more than 3 minutes. Longer than that can turn the color lilac or purple. Advice: avoid bleaching your hair to speed up the graying process. I did one bleach process to strip out the brown dye. It turned my bottom half hair to a beautiful buttery blond. A second round of bleach to remove the blond to gray was a disaster and I had tons of hair breaking off. This was all done professionally and I had to rebuild my hair with all the products I mentioned and deep conditioning treatments at my salon. Just do yourself a favor and don’t bleach your hair. Sorry for the long response but I wanted to add my experience with gray hair. You’ve got a beautiful youthful face and will look amazing with your natural gray. Just have patience with the process and two tone hair. Wear it proud!

Oh I love your videos! Seriously, you are so much fun! I’m 18 months in and I’m still not sure how to take care of my greys. They are good right now so I’m just crossing my fingers they stay grey 😂. I also look for silversisters and I always point them out to whomever I’m with but they never seem to want to be my friend…. No eye contact or recognition that we are on the same journey lol! I think there’s 2 kinds of us. There’s us and then there’s the women who just lets their grey hair grow without making a big deal of it hahaha!

Hey….just another thought. My hair is 2A - 2B curl pattern so I don’t use much heat on my hair except a blow dryer with a diffuser. BUT (thanks to RUclips) I’ve been watching some gray sisters using curling irons & wands to really pump up their curls and I want to try it. I bought a wand, curling iron, and flat iron. So, if you try any silicone free heat protectors, please review them for us ❣❣

I'm experimenting with no shampoo- just wanted to try out all natural clay then rinse with apple cider vinegar. Its not for everyone bc there is no suds, no fragrance and very different experience. But I want to know if my scalp and hair will benefit from this method. I am on month 2- so far I like the way my hair feels and I am committed until Aug (age 64!).

    Start taking hair vitamins…
I went through the grey hair process, I had long colored treated dark brown hair…
And decided to go grey .. I thought the night mare would never end ….. I went to the salon to get a decent short hair cut and the woman gave me a horrible hair, then I went to another hair stylist and she just finish screwing it up ….. so then I just delt with it… so when my grey hair started to come out I just let it do whatever it wanted to !
I was so embarrassed about it…. Trust me it will get better and you will be so glad you did it !
But when the short part grew out … it took 1 year, but now I just love it it is Beautiful!!!
I get so many compliments from both men and women.. make me wish I would have done it years ago … but thanks to Covid everyone was doing it, cause you couldn’t go to a salon…. But things have slowed down..

me and my husband are doing the same thing here in Montana building our dream home weve been at it for two year now and living in our shop in the mean time. The weather here has caused so many delays and now its finally warming up so we can finish it. We are building it ourselves I think thats why me and my husband went so gray lol. At first when we first installed our well a year ago our well water was full of iron it turned everything a dark ugly rust color and turned my hair red lol we finally got a filter and now the water is clear . I added a little applecider vinegar to my shampoo bottle and that seems to keep the yellow and any other ugly colors out of my hair :) its funny cause even though we dont have to bother with dyes we still also have to be careful what we use to protect our lovely grays. So its not 100% withiout its own upkeep :)
