I feel like it’s inefficient scoring, not making teammates better and then giving up more points on the defensive end than you create on offense. The mix of those 3 creates an “empty stats” player. If you follow this checklist you can find players on bad teams that aren’t actually empty stats, just their team is awful.
You’d have to do some film study though to figure this out about a player

    • @fortynights1513
      @fortynights1513 Год назад +1

In my opinion it’s a product of being the best scorer on a team that didn’t really have anyone else who could score well, and these players aren’t ones who you’d build a team around because they don’t score efficiently, and teams where they were the best player didn’t win much.
Some of them could be decent in a reduced role perhaps, but they aren’t number one options on successful teams in the league.
A textbook example that’s perhaps even more inefficient than anyone you’ll see in this comment section would be Jamal Mashburn in 1996.
He averaged 23.4 points per game on 37.9% shooting from the field for a 26 win Mavericks team. The team was good offensively, but horrid defensively, so he may not have been good in that regard in addition to inefficient scoring.
That 37.9% is worse than every season of Allen Iverson’s career, almost all of Jerry Stackhouse’s prime, and both of MJ’s Wizards years and only two players who scored as much shot as inefficiently, and both were in the 50’s and 60’s (Joe Fulks and Dolph Schayes).
So that might be the emptiest stats ever.

  • @Snaq_Paq

I always classified empty stats as "stats that don't translate to the win column". Usually points scored on poor efficiency. So I do agree with the idea that Booker's stats WERE empty, because the Suns didn't win anything and Booker is a notorious shot-chucker. His numbers still do overrate him to an extent.
Edit: Quick addendum for all the Booker stans- yes, I know his efficiency has gotten better over the years. Early Booker was still a chucker. His numbers are still overrated because his usage rate is beyond cracked.

I think there are 3 different things that can qualify you as having empty stats
    1. Playing on a terrible team and having great numbers year after year but your team never gets out of the bottom. No matter how bad your team is, after a few years you should be able to help your team improve even a little unless your numbers are just about yourself and don't actually help the team. Examples of this are Booker his first 5 years and Jerami Grant when he went to Detroit.
    2. Being a player on a loaded team and only getting numbers because all of the attention is going to your teammates.
    3. Being a player with extremely high usage but terrible efficiency as well as usually relying on free throws

For me empty stats is when a player has been in the league for several years and is clearly not developing anymore and they are more hurting their team by taking all the shots.
Westbrook, Oubre, Nick Young, Josh Smith... Either you play winning basketball or you try to develop and grow the team. If you score 25 but you take all the shots away from your teammates - that's empty stats.

Its being able to score and do things that look great, but due to a lack of defensive scheme, or lack of ability to play around other greats - you just won't really be a winner. They losing to the spurs right now, but that stat still remains. It was the same with Russ a few years back, you don’t have to like his game, but they won around 40% more games when Russ had a triple double in that MVP season

Empty stats should just be considered good counting stats on bad efficiency

Empty stats imo is stat padding, you could make an argument that Dame puts up empty stats but I bet he would fit in perfectly as a complementary piece compare to someone like Russ who puts up empty stats

It’s always been pretty simple imo. Being the best on a bad team is seen differently than being the best on a good team. Situation could always change the perception. Even putting up empty numbers is impressive. Except for Kelly Oubre lol

Well, the Devin Booker example really isn't "empty stats" so much as "empty callories", aka the "only good player on a bad team puts up big numbers"-phenomenon. When a team sucks, the only good player basically gets to do what he wants and gets to score as much of the team's total points as he wants. The team is tanking anyway, so his efficiency doesn't matter. That does not automatically equate terrible efficiency, aka "empty stats", though.

Chris Kaman is a huge empty stats player. His Box Plus-Minus was been negative his entire career despite having seasons of 18ppg 9rebs or 15ppg 12rebs. Inefficient scorer/crap defender.

Interestingly, his career defensive box +/- is better than his offensive career total for that metric.
I could see his stats being viewed as “empty” for a few of those years, but two that I’d argue weren’t were in 2006 and 2007 when he was starting on a winning team and another that was a couple games away from being one.
Could have been more efficient I’m sure, but his career field goal percentage is higher than some of the guys mentioned in the comments, and 52.3% in 06.
Somewhat empty, but I have come across emptier.

You mentioned Dillon Brooks' fouls as a detriment to the team.
    I disagree
He's trash, so getting under the opponent's skin and possibly getting someone that can actually deliver something on the court ejected is what he has to offer for his team

I feel like empty stats has kinda been disproven. Everyone criticized guys like booker and Trae Young but when they started winning they keep the same stats and got respect. I think it applies more to lower level players having better years in bad teams like with Davonte Graham averaging 18 and 7 out of knowers then falling of a cliff when he wasn’t the no 1 option

Every single Andre Drummond stat was empty. Every rebound accomplishment or double-double in Detroit was empty. The guy got way too much credit.
