Or another way of putting it, they were one draft pick away: they drafted such dead weight in Darko that if they got Wade, Melo, or Bosh instead, they probably squeak in one more win in the 2005 Finals. In one of the three most loaded drafts, they had the #2 overall pick and completely whiffed. Most likely, a decent player would've made the 04 squad better.

Hey Andy, if you have Wilt Chamberlain, what about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? Just like Wilt, he forced the Milwaukee Bucks to trade him to LA. This is way bigger than Chris Webber for sure. Speaking of wanting to trade to a team for more more money, what about Alonzo Mourning's trade to the Miami Heat from Hornets? Heck, I'll even take Shawn Kemp's trade from the Sonics to the Cavs for that reason. Way bigger deal than Webber.

There is a huge difference when it comes to management. Harden got everything he wanted and got help from other all stars during his time in Houston. Vince got no help and all Toronto management cared of about was ticket sales. Win or lose, Vince was selling out games. And everyone knows about Vince “throwing games” but management wanted VC out and made him unhappy on purpose because they wanted bosh to be the guy. They ignored his GM suggestion to hire a rookie manager in Babcock who was easily the worst GM in franchise history. They took away his moms parking spot. They ignore any suggestions for getting better players. Even the day before his trade, he asked the Raptors not to trade him but Rob Babcock did anyway.

The Shaq trade had some additional nuances. The first was Kobe's free agency - he was considering signing with either the Bulls, Knicks, Nuggets or even the Clippers of all teams (Jerry West, while being a GM of the Memphis Grizzlies, told Kobe to not play for Donald Sterling). However it was all a ruse since Kobe wanted to make sure that Shaq will be gone. Also, the Lakers were looking to find a suitable trade partner for Shaq. Dallas were interested, but Mark Cuban rejected any trade packages involving Dirk Nowitzki. Shaq was also showing interest in returning to Orlando to play with Tracy McGrady, but that also fell through when TMac was traded to Houston. In the end the Lakers settled on the deal from Miami involving Caron Butler, Lamar Odom, Brian Grant, and a 2006 1st round pick.
