It was definitely a grower for me. First time i listened to it was 2019 (slightly before the release of Alien, IIRC i discovered NL in winter 18-19) and it didn't say much to me. I saved it and barely listened to it again.
Then some time in 2020, i think around the pandemic/late spring, i listened to it again and it became one of my favorite core albums of all time (and definitely in my A ranking of albums in general). It's by far my fav NL album. It's the guitar layering that does it for me, the part in Windbreaker with 3 different guitar layers that "somehow" (just Jon's genius lol) work is mindblowing. The comparison of Sempiternal to Singularity is a stretch.
While both albums came out in 2013, Singularity actually released first. I don’t think NL is biting BMTH on here, and vice versa. Just a stream of consciousness moment on the track Scarab that made Shadow Moses sound similar to it. I think NL was heavily influenced by bands like Karnivool and Parkway Drive, in particular PW because when Horizons and Deep Blue came out it basically elevated the metalcore to bigger audiences.

Okay, hear me out: back 9-10 years ago, the composition of metalcore music was different, more complex. Today's popular hits from like Falling in Reverse, Issues, Motionless in White (whatever) they all follow the same pattern pop music laid out: intro, verse, chorus, now repeat that then breakdown then more chorus and if we are lucky, an outro. Just compare this pattern to early Northlane or Asking Alexandria for a good example too. Re-listening these 2010s albums now the difference is so obvious and actually these old albums feel refreshing after all these pop-styled metal tracks.

Pretty sure 90% of Northlane fans from this era would trade the whole Obsidian album for just 1 song of the same calibre of this album. Obsidian has the experimental/EDM qualities and elements, but does not come close to the the writing, the instrumentation, atmosphere and phrasing of this album. This album paved the way for so many of the best bands in the scene. (Thornhill, Silent Planet, Invent, Animate + so many more) Pretty much began their careers as carbon copies of this album's sound

If you get a chance Drew, check out the documentary Northlane posted on their RUclips channel. Goes into detail about what they went through after Adrian left and the emotions building up to the writing of Alien. The background music actually ended up becoming the fade out used on Xen. As for their members, I believe only Adrian and their original bassist left. They go a lot into their history and member changes in their documentary. Agree with a lot of your sentiments here though. This is great as an isolated album, but as a part of Northlane's discography, they've come a long way and I LOVE where they're at now.

One of the best metalcore albums of all time. Easily Northlane's best album for me too. I also don't get the dislike on the production side, this album is amazing to listen to (and it came out in 2013 too) and I remember in 2013 this felt so ahead of it's time.

Love to see this album getting attention years on, probably one of my top 5 and one that has gotten me through many tough times (currently struggling a lot with my first breakup - from the grieving to the feeling that I’m now lost with no purpose so may have to revisit hahah).
The speech in the second to last track is actually just an excerpt from a speech by Terence McKenna, a philosopher from the 90’s that talked a lot about psychedelics (mainly DMT and psilocybin), metaphysics and life - not many good quality sources remain so it is gonna sound a bit shit and I understand the criticism despite loving the dude and his work😅
To me the album is his narrative journey of how he overcame the feeling everyone gets in their early 20’s - from feeling lost and without purpose, to having key shifts in perspective (probably inspired by a few DMT trips - for one the Terence McKenna excerpt but also the lyrics are littered with references, for example “dimethylated spirits you’ll find” - DMT standing for DiMethylTriptamine), realising what he wants in life and that there is much more positivity in the world than he previously thought, to moments of self reflection in masquerade, to then being able to move forward a better person, one with the world living on it ready to fulfill the purpose he has realised.
Truly an amazing album, and I don’t knock you for the criticisms/lack of knowledge on small things on it - I liked hearing your perspective as a first time listener nearly a decade on, and fuck those who do just because you expressed a different perspective on a media form which is open to interpretation✌️

Honestly one of the few times I have to strongly disagree with you here. I don't get where you hear Linkin Park at all in this record, not in any way. The Oli Sykes comparisons I can kinda understand but BMTH hadn't even released Sempiternal yet when this album came out so if anything the bands simply share inspirations. Northlane couldn't have been influenced by a project that wasn't even out yet. And the production on this record still stands the test of time, the instrumentals sound phenomenal. Sure they weren't taking as many experimental liberties but this decade old album is still so rich.

To quote the booklet page for the song Singularity that comes with the CD, the page reads:
"Traditionally the word 'Singularity' refers to a theoretical moment in evolution where humankind's technology reaches a point that is so advanced that it is impossible to imagine what life would be like at that point in time. Much like a black hole or the Big Bang theory, the Singularity remains a mysterious point that is beyond human description or comprehension."
Also the voice you hear in the song is a quote from Terence Mckenna. Have a good day everyone :)
