      In my opinion I believe because obsidian is flawed in that it doesn't quite hit as hard as alien, almost feels like a red pill album. Which makes it theatrical in a sense. I believe alien demonstrates what the band can do, and obsidian shows us alittle more about them. The album I'm watching closely is what comes next, that is where we are going to see uncharted waters, possibly dredged in their old sound. My opinion ultimately is, both albums are wonderfully made and send us on a journey, don't just love the filth, love the heartache and loneliness with it.

      @@TheDrakorSynn the three new songs so far (they played an unreleased one at the gig I was at this evening) definitely seem like they're taking aspects of Alien and Obsidian and building on that. Which is fine by me - like so many of us those albums are what made me a fan. Their older stuff is fine - Mesmer is kind of like...TesseracT-coded with early Karnivool lyricism/melodies especially in the chorus. It was good music and they did it well but like so many of the electronicore/post metalcore bands now like Bad Omens and Dayseeker, you've gotta do something different to stand out. These three bands (and yes Sleep Token too but they're in a separate lane imo) are forging a new path for artists to go down and I'm excited to see where it goes - discovering Bad Omens made me excited for new music and new bands and when you're in your 40s that's no small feat!

    One of the things that I liked more about Alien was that it had a more conistent theme throughout. It's also much grittier sounding in a way that makes Obsidian feel a bit pulled back imo.

    • @tripple-dot-dash871
      @tripple-dot-dash871 2 года назад +3

      obsidian couldve been so much better if they did more little things. Things like intros of next songs being in the prev ones, or if they had a much more prominent theme. I feel so much more emotion from this entire album, even with songs i might not listen to that much. On obsidian, if he ever even shows emotion, its only for a little bit of the song then throws it away. Honestly i like some Songs, excluding singles, off of obsidian, but it never feels like anything hits. Its just my opinion but thats what it is.

    • @lyricsdomatter
      @lyricsdomatter 5 месяцев назад +1

      Alien, if you look at the lyrics, was obviously an incredibly personal journey for Marcus and you can really feel that listening to it. It upset his family quite a lot apparently who didn't want him putting all of that on blast. Obsidian is more a social commentary album in the vein of something like Egowerk from The Faint. It's still his feelings on these issues but it's not that ultra personal, soul-baring excoriation of Alien. When you realise that Obsidian is meant to be a synonym for black mirror (its a similar material to onyx), it all makes a lot more sense

    Fun fact: at 40:17 on the song "Vultures" the line "Let the earth where I carved my name burn" refers to an older Northlane song named "Aspire" from the album Singularity, where Adrian was frontman of the band and the song directly starts with "I carve my own name into the earth".

    One thing I will say is that as a long time northlane they definitely have always has some type of electronic elements in their music. Even way back with the old vocalist. That ambiance is definitely something they always played around with. Even with the albums with Marcus before Alien there are definitely a but of electronic elements but I think as a fan base we all agree that Alien was a step towards keeping that consistent electronic/experimental themed through the whole album. Drew, I found your Obisidan review shortly after it came out, loved the album, listened to the ever loving crap out of Obsidian, its tracks are scattered all over my playlists with the variety it has... but I treated it as a one-off. I have never dived into Northlane as a band, just ran with Obsidian, until this week.
    I finally listened to Alien, many times, and Alien clears Obsidian as an album and its not even close. This is one of the most cohesive projects I've heard before. The opening sets the tone, the songs get angrier and angrier, then it all fades away, then vultures and sleepless are like the death throes of a dying soul. The whole album makes you stank face, bob your head, dance, close your eyes to choruses... and a lot of the time all in the same song.
    Contrasting that to my largest gripes with Obsidian being the opener and closer, where I've just always disliked Clarity and prefer to forget it's there, and Dark Solitare building and building only to just disperse the energy without any big payoff should literally be a crime. And on top of that, just due to the nature of the album, theres no really noticable sonic or lyrical connections between all the songs of Obsidain like in Alien.
    It's been a long time since an album not only grabbed my attention completely sonically, but emotionally as well. I mean I'm even watching this video just for another excuse to listen to it when I should be sleeping xD theres no tracks I'd remove and between Alien and the potential new album around the corner for Northlane I have a feeling theyll be the top of my list for minutes listened this year

      >Dark Solitare building and building only to just disperse the energy without any big payoff
      That's just life though isn't it? You live, you expend all this energy trying to do the best you can, you die and disappear. I would have to imagine that's why it's the last track
      > just due to the nature of the album, theres no really noticable sonic or lyrical connections between all the songs of Obsidain like in Alien.
      Reading the lyrics it seems like it's a blend between Marcus' personal experiences/feelings, and what the world at large is like, trying to exist in it these days especially for younger people who should have their whole lives ahead of them to look forward to when the reality is....well, I'm just glad I'm already in my 40s I'll put it that way
      Neat fact, Obsidian as a mineral is similar to onyx. Both shiny and very dark...kind of like a 'Black Mirror' you might say ;)

    Just keep going down the northlane rabbit hole. each album has it's own unique sound to it. mesmer before this album was when Marcus to me really seemed to find his place in the band. Node was basically the band seemingly trying to replace Adrian but keeping their sound kind of the same. Singularity put Northlane on the map with Quantumn Flux (with adrian on vocals), and Discoveries was really their first full album.

    I honestly don't know whether I'd prefer Alien or Obsidian. Alien was the first Northlane album I listened to. I saw an ad on RUclips for Alien, which used a clip from Bloodline. The only time I've ever listened to a band after seeing an ad and it was so worth it. Alien got me through the worst mental health of my life. In such low moments I would just lie back and listen to the album on repeat, letting it sweep me away. So it has such a strong place in my heart. I think I cycled through every song on the album as far as which track is my favourite. I still go back and listen every now and then because it's just so good. Obsidian, I was a couple months late to realising Northlane had released new music. I listened to it and loved it, but it wasn't the same visceral reaction because my mental health had improved. I still really enjoyed it and was listening on repeat for a bit. I feel like both albums are tied in my head

    Great reaction and generally nice thoughts, although Sempiternal? Honestly the first time I've seen that referenced. I assume you mean in the glitchy sort of effects? Otherwise I can't hear even a smidge of that personally haha
    Also - I died laughing at your reaction to the Talking Heads breakdown. I had the same reaction the first time I heard it.. it is honestly one of the grooviest songs and heaviest Northlane tracks outside of their early days. Really hits hard with the lyrical content on board. "That should be illegal!" Lmfao

      Can you time stamp when I mentioned sempiternal? I’d have to hear it again!

      @nickwait5260 2 года назад

      @@DrewFortune97 Hey, sorry for the slow reply - I went back to try find it but couldn't. I think it was near the end of Freefall possibly? Blink and you'll miss it but I'm 95% certain I heard "Sempiternal" as a reference to one of the songs.
      Thought i'd take a bit of extra time to say - With your reactions, I really appreciate how you wait for more ideal moments to comment on songs and actually listen when the song is showing off. It completely takes me out of a reaction when the reactor comments over the top of a certain section of a song.

    I really like Node but it is kinda raw album compare to all the rest with Marcus,which makes sense. I would recommend to give a go to Mesmer though.Render is one of my all time favourite Northlane songs is from it. Btw,the whole theme is as dark as Obsidian, but less personal than Alien.

    Lil late to the discussion hahah but I just haven’t been able to obsidian yet… I’ve gave it a couple listens and can definitely appreciate it - but for me Alien is just a 100% through and through flawless album, definitely in my top favourites even years later and I think that has just affected my ability to fully delve into obsidian, taking it for what it is and judging it independently of Alien😅

      The Patreon is simply just to support the channel if you wish to do so - as much as I’d love to, I wouldn’t be able to get through every Patreon request on top of the content I want to put out myself. Not enough time in the day to film/edit.
