As someone who generally doesn't like a lot of Metalcore, I'm a very big fan of Northlane. They're a fairly experimental bunch and I love how densely they incorporate electronic elements into their sound and how it doesn't sound gimmicky at all, even when they lean more towards electronic genres as opposed to Metal. It's a very refreshing take on the Metalcore formula and the execution is immaculate overall. I've seen a lot of Metalcore folks criticize the band for the stylistic shift in sound but they've become drastically more interesting now and they're also better able to experiment around Marcus as opposed to their older vocalist imo.
Just finished the video man. Surprised you weren't immediately impressed by Plenty as I was tho, it's one of the most riff-driven songs on the album. I'm glad you also took notice of the sheer variety this album has to offer which is something that I also loved about Alien. Obsidian is much more electronic-oriented compared to Alien and as such it feels more pulled back but it definitely isn't without its merits. Your next Northlane album has to be Alien! It has a more consistent lyrical theme throughout and a lot of what's in play here in Obsidian was established with Alien.
Northlane has always had prominent electronic influences ever since bringing Marcus (the current vocalist) on board, but even more so on Obsidian. They use synths and electronic elements in such unique ways for the type of band they are. Totally pushing boundaries in the best way possible.

U absolutely have to listen to The Drak Pool, Thornhills previous album. One of the greatest metalcore albums I’ve ever heard. If you loved this I think you’ll like the dark pool a lot more
A lot of people don’t like Plenty as much across the community, and sometimes I find it hard to wonder why. It’s such a melodic, ethereal and djenty track. Underrated for sure. It kind of leads you into the second half of the record, they’re excellent song writers and can’t wait to see what they do next with this EDM sound.

“If this is what future metal sounds like, IM IN”. You got the idea and Northlane did their job! With this album they have brought something so new and fresh to the scene and I’m excited about the metal genre when albums like this come out
You will not be disappointed. They are untouchable live. Great stage presence. and their diverse range of sounds from new to old make for just a varied show that will blow your socks off
They play so well live, it justifies how a band sounds, they absolutely crush this shit live with the clarity and sound quality of gods, it has elements of a lot, a reflection of the last 30 years of rock alt rock nu metal, everything, 🔥👍👍👍.
Came in with Northlane when they released “Alien,” (amazing album, hope you hit those likes for the reaction). This is my first time listening to “Obsidian,” was pleasantly surprised to see this. This is an amazing album; always loved how they mixed Djent, Metalcore, EDM/Synthpop and Nu-Metal elements together.
It’s so awesome to see Northlane doing so well. Usually after a main vocalist leaves a band (this case being Adrian), a band goes downhill. I remember people were unsure about Marcus at first and admittedly I was unsure too. But after I heard their first few songs with Marcus I was blown away. Marcus and Brendon have been blessings for Northlane and that’s why they’re still going strong. I hope Adrian is still somewhat in contact with them, and I hope he’s proud of how they’re doing, because he should be! Extra note: The performance that made Northlane my favourite heavy band was their Bloodline performance live at the roundhouse. You need to check it out.
The fellas have said they don't really speak to him a whole lot. The guy left them pretty high and dry, as did Alex. He's a practising psychologist now, but uh yeah a bit loopy.
I was not blown away. Then and now, unfortunately. I'm all for experimentation, but they have yet to make a track I've enjoyed since Adrian's departure.
Glad that you also really enjoyed this album and that it's getting such acclaim and creating new fans! They're all self funded and self managed, Josh the lead guitarist took on that responsibility after they have had members leave the band / management issues and label pressures. So it's amazing that they made such a great record with all of that going on in the background. Strongly recommend considering buying the album so that the band gets the support it needs for the future, and also as if enough people do that it will send Northlane a strong message that they need to come to Ireland on tour! And once you've taken the time to enjoy and savour this one, I strongly recommend the previous albums Alien and Mesmer. Peace 👍
Hey Drew! Just a note. For optimal sound quality, you'll always want to have spotify volume slider maxed (source) and then adjust the focusrite to the desired volume.
@@DrewFortune97 It's not a huge deal, but the idea is that you always want the source of your sound to be boosted to max because that is the most pure unimpeded signal. If you say had the spotify slider at say 10% and cranked your mixer, you'd be boosting a bad signal. In sound designer / production terms, doing something like that would result in a worse signal to noise ratio.
Their blend of metal and electronic is really tastefully done. I don't normally get into metal-core style music, but Northlane is the exception. Their production and melodic choices are fantastic. Even though some of it can sound a bit poppy, it's just so undeniably good that it's hard not to be a fan.
If you have a good hifi set up with speakers in your car or even at home that last half of Xen has such an extremely wide and deep soundscape that it feels like your drifting in space, its surreal. Also if someone hasn't told you yet, the song Cypher is a direct reference to the character Cypher from The Matrix.
Zero-One on the Mesmer Album was probably the origin of this style they’ve adopted. Of course they produced their own albums after Mesmer; but still a good look in to where the motivation sparked
You’ve got to start at the beginning with Marcus. Node was their first one with him on vocals and it truly made the band born again. Alien is another great one (the last one before this one) and it was the start of them really leaning into the electronics, so that might be more up your alley but Node is untouchable for me personally. The analog mix is… hoo. So live. So real.
Another Node truther. I remember everyone was so pissed at them for the production on that album but I LOOOOOVED the way it sounded lol. It was a breath of fresh air at the time in a scene full of overproduced albums.
Check out alien, their previous album that leans more towards the metalcore sound with this similar edm/synth elements. Its a lot darker and much more dramatic, personally prefer that one but would love to hear your thoughts!
if no one has mentioned it, you have to listen to Mesmer! It was my AOTY for 2017. Such an amazing album, but I do highly recommend you listen to their discography.

These guys are super underrated and I’ve been pushing them on a few other reactors, but I think Drew would like them the most. They’re kinda reminiscent to Gojira and Tool to me while still having their own feel
@@AnthonyK93 I found them when the album Pelagial was released. They are not of the "Djenty" type, definitely firmly in prog/metal territory, as you said a lot of tool influence, but with more modern metal/metalcore and even death metal influences.
I definitely second the recommendation for the album “The Dark Pool” by Thornhill. It’s got those soaring, atmospheric melodies with djenty rhythms underneath that you like. If you really want to go even further on the techno meets metal spectrum of things, check out the new release by The Algorithm titled “Data Renaissance”. Cheers!

Amazing reaction, actually the last song on the album sounds so close to Periphery - Have a blast chorus! Thats crazy cause this is probably one of the most beutiful melody for me
First of all. Your reaction to this album was the best yet! Loved it. I recommend you listen to every one of their six albums. From first to last and listen to the change in each one of them. And react to all of them. They are fucking brilliant. I'm glad you loved them as much as I do dude 🤙🤙
Brother, instant follow after seeing how you reacted to Abomination!! Such a massive tune and the album is huge! Glad you discovered the joys of Northlane!
I HIGHLY recommend their album "Alien", it's THE album from northlane (in the marcus bridge era) and as banging as Obsidian, if not even more!🔥 Btw alien was the last album before obsidian
Different pieces of work, both incredible. Alien is just loaded with emotion and the writing is undoubtedly the most honest. Struggled like hell through that year of the release and came out of it with a Northlane tattoo a year later. I think Alien is everyones new favourite album for that.. just opened you up. Obsidian though.. it's huge.. went off live too.
I discovered Northlane as a suggested band through the band Volumes, (older Volumes) I dug their sound listened to them but never deep dove until this Album. My favorite at the moment. I love the electronic music genre myself and have always been into it so this combo for me with Northlane is a delight. Thank you for sharing this reaction.
From what I can see it appears you have yet to do a full reaction on the album Mesmer! I see a lot of fellow fans recommending alien which is fantastic but for me Mesmer readily stood out more personally as an incredible album, give it a go man! You wouldn’t be disappointed
Listening to this album reminded me a bit of Enter Shikari (specially A Flash Flood of Colour), with the EDM intros and bits, minus the humorous and criticizing side.
Another incredible album (I really love Alien). Another influence, that for me is obvious, are the two first Linkin park's albums. That mix between metal, pop and electronic elements is very present in Northlane.
We need an Alien reaction ! Most fans would class that one as their magnum opus so far - showing their metal chops in full force while planting the seeds for the synths and EDM elements that come through in Obsidian - which works both as a wonderful isolated record but an even better sequel. Alien is a near perfect metalcore record, by far northlane’s most diverse and emotional sound - go listen to it !
Dude, it goes without saying that you should take a deep look to other albums of Northlane. In the video you sayed that you like the bands, who are trying to find their own sound, doing some different stuff and who are trying to go forward with their experiments with sound, and I definetly share your ooinion. Their whole discography is as different as it possible. It would be very interesting to hear the opinion on their other albums from the person, who listens to them from the newest releases to their older records and very beginnings :)
i highly suggest you check out the latest erra deluxe album its rllllly good, i cant stop listening to it, the chord progressions and melodies and harmonies are just so good
Node album is my favorite with this being the second best. If you want the 'spacey' experimental sound from these boys, you gotta give Node a try. A lot of fans gave it crap because it wasn't even a metalcore album persay but more like an alt metal/rock like Deftones. They even have a song called Ohm, which I actually prefer to the Deftones tune LOL
If you want another band heavily involved in the electronic metal scene try enter shikari you'd love them, the albums common dreads and the mindsweep would be right up your alley
I wouldn't know what genre to even call them because they have hardcore punk, dubstep, trance, rap, full on pop moments and drum and bass parts. They started the genre that electric callboy does if that's anything to go by. They are extremely experimental with tonnes of wtf moments
If i would compare Alien and Obsidian Northlane: Alien is more oriented towards older style Industrial Metal mixed with Metalcore and that album was flawless, if i would say what Alien reminded me of is: Sybreed, old Neurotech, Ilidiance and MnemiC( if you haven't heard those check them out ) Obsidian is now more oriented towards EDM/ Industrial Metal with more Techy style of Metalcore which imo Metalcore in general needs this, some new "light" so to say...Again i would say that it has style of newer Neurotech, Ilidiance, MnemiC and Blue Stahli but Northlane keeps their own style still and experimenting in right direction I urge you to check also Sybreed ( unfortinetly they aren't active anymore ), old Neurotech albums, Ilidiance and MnemiC ( they aren't active anymore but imo theyre pioneers of industrial metal )
About the too slow/too fast thing you mentioned in the first track - the "groovy" bits would not have nearly as much of an impact if it weren't for the other bits that come before it!
Alien Full Album Reaction is LIVE!

They are fucking brilliant. I'm glad you loved them as much as I do dude 🤙🤙
❤️
Brother, instant follow after seeing how you reacted to Abomination!! Such a massive tune and the album is huge! Glad you discovered the joys of Northlane!
I HIGHLY recommend their album "Alien", it's THE album from northlane (in the marcus bridge era) and as banging as Obsidian, if not even more!🔥
Btw alien was the last album before obsidian
Marcus is an elite tier vocalist man.. is so beautiful to listen to.
Someone referred to this style as “Cyber Core” I think that fits pretty well
Accurate
Northlane and Erra are quickly becoming some of my favourite bands. Can't wait to see Northlane with Sleep Token in January!
Love this album! It has a certain sense of nostalgia and the mix of EDM is phenomenal
Agree bro
Fucking incredible album!!!
I would say that alien is better....but still this album is amazing
agreed
Different pieces of work, both incredible. Alien is just loaded with emotion and the writing is undoubtedly the most honest. Struggled like hell through that year of the release and came out of it with a Northlane tattoo a year later. I think Alien is everyones new favourite album for that.. just opened you up. Obsidian though.. it's huge.. went off live too.
This is my album of the year so far. It’s so refreshing
My favourite song in obsidian album is carbonized cypher obsidian and dark solitaire 👏👍🔥🎸
Great tracks bro!!
I love how you connected the intro song to Opus. I love that song to death.
My pleasure bro💜
Anyone that has tesseract on their walls gets an immediate sub!
From what I can see it appears you have yet to do a full reaction on the album Mesmer! I see a lot of fellow fans recommending alien which is fantastic but for me Mesmer readily stood out more personally as an incredible album, give it a go man! You wouldn’t be disappointed
I see stars is the first band I remember that really meshed all of their metal with dubstep and edm.
I’m hooked on this album now. Carbonize is so good 🤙
Great Reaction, for a massive Masterpiece!!. If you like this kind of mix, you should check out Enter Shikari.

@@DrewFortune97 u fucken legend
inamorata is a love song. lyrics are great
never listened to northlane before, so i decided to watch this full video to hear the album with you for the first time, thanks...
They've outdone themselves. Is it better than Alien? No. It's different. Is that better? Of course. That's it)
Insane awesomeness of a FXxXiNg Album!!! ❤️🔥🤘🏽
i highly suggest you check out the latest erra deluxe album its rllllly good, i cant stop listening to it, the chord progressions and melodies and harmonies are just so good
trying to figure out whats going on? Then we see in your eyes that you are being amazed and astounded!!
"If you thought I wasn't gonna bring that back, you're wrong" accompanied by the face warp LOL
Reaction to Windwaker - Love Language please ??? 😁
Watching this so bombed Rn and you’ve. Got a new subscriber
Silent Planet - Trilogy reaction is what I need! :D Northlane is sick as fuck as well.
They always released great albums but THIS is just amazing.
Abomination is such a masterpiece. Amazing album
Phenomenal album
Get that 500 likes boys for that Alien reaction!!
Northlane concerts are gonna become clubs when THAT section of Abomination hits
Thanks for the recommendation on Sven
So right about "Is This A Test" being a Fifa song haha :)))
If i would compare Alien and Obsidian Northlane:
Alien is more oriented towards older style Industrial Metal mixed with Metalcore and that album was flawless, if i would say what Alien reminded me of is:
Sybreed, old Neurotech, Ilidiance and MnemiC( if you haven't heard those check them out )
Obsidian is now more oriented towards EDM/ Industrial Metal with more Techy style of Metalcore which imo Metalcore in general needs this, some new "light" so to say...Again i would say that it has style of newer Neurotech, Ilidiance, MnemiC and Blue Stahli but Northlane keeps their own style still and experimenting in right direction
I urge you to check also Sybreed ( unfortinetly they aren't active anymore ), old Neurotech albums, Ilidiance and MnemiC ( they aren't active anymore but imo theyre pioneers of industrial metal )
Yes Northlane are magic🤘🙌
About the too slow/too fast thing you mentioned in the first track - the "groovy" bits would not have nearly as much of an impact if it weren't for the other bits that come before it!
Check ZEAL & ARDOR band and their "Zeal & Ardor" album (2022). It's gonna blow you away.
You need to react Alien, its another masterpiece
This album is a solid 10/10 for me. 😊
