  • Dropshots have been dominating Smallmouth events over the past few seasons. Here are 5 reasons a dropshot is better than a tube and why most winning anglers choose a dropshot when fishing for smallmouth

    The reason why the drop shot and not just it but the Ned rig and neko rig are such effective baits/rigs are because they look very realistic and natural. Those rigs/baits get bit more often because they have a very realistic, natural, slow, sluggish, easy prey looking presentation. Also, you tend to fish those rigs on lighter lines which look less unnatural in the water compared to using bigger diameters lines.

    Been smallmouth fishing over 50 years...With all due respect to any and/or all, if I had to pick and use but one smallmouth bait henceforth till death, it would not be a drop shot...it would however be a 3.5” coffee tube in some green pumpkin configuration of flakes and specks.

    Have you ever fished Big Manistique Lake in Curtis for small mouth? Headed there next week..if so tips.
    Thinking drifting with drop shot, due to a lot of gravel bottoms. Tight lines. How the new baby, daddy?

    I’d love to see what you have to say about dealing with line twist. I haven’t gotten a great answer on this and any tips would be appreciated. I don’t want to change to a swivel style hook due to the high hook up to land ratio I’m getting with my current set up

    • @brnowak_fishing
      @brnowak_fishing  4 года назад +1

      andy berkenpas hey Andy - I actually run a swivel between my main line and leader. I only use about a 7ft leader to a swivel. This eliminates line twist and also helps with sensitivity too

    • @ethanm1580
      @ethanm1580 3 года назад

      andy berkenpas, I've been using those micro swivels, used by steelhead fisherman. Size 10 or 12 (Spro, VMC, Raven, rated 20#). Never had any line twist with this setup. Tie this up 24" above your hook, works great. My partner only uses swivel style hook and he outfishes me (often) so... it's up to you, different rigging options. Cheers!

  • @ethanm1580
    @ethanm1580 3 года назад

    I noticed you had some krystal flash tied on to your hook. Have you noticed if bites increased with this? I really like the idea! I've seen days when steelhead fishing with flies that if there was not any flash incorporated in the fly, like in the tail of a wooly bugger, you would not get any bites. Thanks

    • @brnowak_fishing
      @brnowak_fishing  3 года назад

      Hey Ethan, I don't know if the flash helps or not. I'm sure there are certain days where it's a huge factor but unfortunately I didn't get enough time to dial it in and confirm or deny this season. Super interesting to hear about the steelhead and how they act with flash/no flash though!

    The difference in the two techniques is,the drop shot is better fishing fish that are schooled up,were as the tube is better fishing for roaming wolf pack fish that aren’t in big schools and that are typically in shallower water and you’re snapping a tube !

  • @BlueCollarFishing
    @BlueCollarFishing 3 года назад

    what if you are doing like me and using a tube as a drop shot? haha sometimes I tie on a drop shot rip and instead of using an empty weight, I bounce a tube off the river bottom with a tube weight a couple feet below.

    You should do an underwater video (like in a swimming pool). Like what action and movement should the bait have and look like underwater, and how do you move the rod, or what do you do with the rod to accomplish it

    Drop shot and tube are always tied on and ready. DS is killer in the heat of the summer. Spring and fall a tube is money and accounts for most of my fist over 6, but that's probably because I'm throwing it more than anything else.
    Great point about DS and livescope, the precision of a dropshot is unmatched.

    Great tips. I have spurts where the drop shot is the bait and then it's something else . Especially this year it seems the bite has changed more times then any other time I can remember . Have been throwing a ARig a ton the last 2 days but it's been a finess swimbait that's the year round winner by far. Hope all is well man .

    So you can drift with a drop shot? Like as when the bass are suspended.

    • @brnowak_fishing
      @brnowak_fishing  4 года назад +1

      Yes, you can, but if they're suspended, I'd go with something up in the water column like a jerkbait or swimbait if you can get away with it

      Hey Jose - I understand. LiveScope (or graphs at all) are not needed for this. Moreso just trying to explain how a dropshot can be fished slightly suspended (above the weight) and is a target fishing bait. Whereas tube falls with a spiral and is a direct bottom contact bait
