Having fished mainly ponds growing up, I never worried too much about this. First time out on the lake, I lost several lures and realized I had a lot to learn. Thanks for the video, you explained it very well.
Man this is 6 years old. I've been fishing alot the past 2 years. The first lure I lost was a really old wooden lure that had a metal propeller on the back. I tried to go back and find it but it's gone. One of the 2 wooden lures my grandfather gave me. He's gone now. 😢
I know this is old, but new to me and I was ultra disappointed to lose a crankbait today after using it for the first time. First time I’ve ever used one. Well, that’s learning! Thanks for the video!
In my humble opinion, Tactical Bassin is by far the most informative bass fishing resource out there! I’ve learned soooo much from Matt and Tim over the last couple of years and tell anyone who will listen to watch theses guys on a regular basis. I’ve gotten a few people “hooked” on this site and we are all benefiting hugely! Thank you guys👍🎣
Great advice... I do a lot of kayak fishing with braid and short/fast rods with good backbone. Because you're sitting and using a shorter rod, your line angle is much different and you're even more prone to snags. The advice you gave here is critical when fishing any type of cover from a kayak with a shorter rod. I keep my rod tip higher than normal around cover to get better line angle, and use imagination to put my mind where the bait is. It's a big help when trying to preemptively avoid snags or work myself out of them before the hooks dig. Great video as always guys.
Like others said, I'm getting snagged way more than I think I should be. Trying to pay attention to too many things intead of whats important. Great video and insite, I never thought about this. Thanks again!
I'm definitely going to be more cognizant of it now. In the dead of summer it's so easy to lose focus and just crank until you snag! Thanks for the tip and love the outro with a landed fish! Nice timing.
Figured this out myself the other day while flicking a tazzy devil through nasty thick weeds, eventually i could start to really feel the weeds and could reel harder and flick myself so i was just gliding over the top. Awesome to hear someone explain it in more depth!
between this technique and snapping my line at the beginning of a snag has saved me a ton of money. before these tactics I was spending a ton of money on lead heads for swimbaits
I just came across this old video. I made the switch from straight fluorocarbon to braid and leader to save money from lost lures. When I made this switch, I discovered that I was losing way less gear because of my ability to better feel the bottom. This has made me a much better fisherman, my ability to feel bites vs. snags was huge for me.
Great advice Matt! Also, just take a look at your like/dislike bar. 405 likes (as I write this), NO DISLIKES. You guys should be very proud, definitely one of the best fishing channels on RUclips.
I'll have to try this. I love my fishing spot, but the rocks have a laser target on my back, sometimes just letting it sink to the bottom on the cast, will snag up before you even move the damn thing.
One tip also... it easier to not get hung up when you are controlling the boats movement via trolling motor so... if you're the guy in the back of the boat, it behooves you to pay attention to when the trolling motor is used and in what direction. Make your casts after the boat has moved and your lure won't get drug into something hung up as much.
I'm learning the spots I've been hitting this season. Tons of obstructions I've found but if i get lazy or start rushing I get snagged. If I get a good bass and leave with all my baits, that is my ideal fishing trip. Lol
James Barron lol that’s funny making their under water videos in a dough boy pool with sand and duck weed lol I know they have the water wolf but some of the shots they get I’m like how the heck are they throwing one line with the water wolf and then tops lures to that spot I gotta know how they do it because it’s amazing
Good info here. I don't know how many jigs and t rigged plastics ive lost to the rocks in teh past couple months ive picked up and started learning to fish. Quite frustrating going and buying a new jig only to lose it that same day. Looks like I'll have to start paying attention to the feel of the line as I reel in now. Thanks again.
I just lost $40 worth of terminal tackle in the snaggiest lake I’ve ever seen. I came home and instantly checked to see if you guys had a video on the topic. Not. Disappointed.
You gave that instruction so nicely, and so picturesquely, I can almost see my lure hoppin' over that sh*t on the botom. I will be so pissed when I loose my lure today :) :)
I've watched every video you guys have posted in the last year, keep up the great work, I've been learning a ton! If you are looking for video ideas, could you do a video on skipping docks with a baitcaster? And tips in terms of reel settings, lure selection, and lure weight?
packing the boat and heading to Pardee Reservoir. Probably going to toss a crankbait or two. Great tips that's usually the first thing I'll tell anybody that's relatively new to cranking. Especially when I'm handing them one of my $14 crankbaits to tie on!!
Lately I’ve been a lot luckier about getting my snags back damn lucky but a snag from the bank is way different than a snag from the boat you can always drive your boat over the opposite side and usually play it out or do what Matt said and just avoid it all together I will try this technique tho I’m sure it works bank or not I meant how you can’t always get to your lure from a bank snag useless your willing to go in and I’m not on waiters
I would have been told ya matt how much you really helped me but I watch your show on the tv an cant reply to no video so now I on computer just wanted to tell you I love your show
If you spend any significant time on the water it should come naturally. He makes a great point. Those guys that don't get that chance should be aware of what he's saying! Save you some $$$$
Matt, great video and it hits home to me. On a recent summer trip to Lake Barkley here in KY we had some great night fishing going with soft plastics and spinnerbaits around riprap. The spinnerbaits are easy to fish at night since the bass just crush the snot out of them higher in the water column but the soft plastics bounced on the rocks require finesse. My buddy uses slider jigheads in these rocks and at first I thought yeah right your gonna lose a rig on each cast! I was wrong! He has done that for so long and he basically fished it like your saying and I watched it work and once my "pride" was out of the way I copied his technique and had some fun. Pride...we all have it and even though i fish a lot I catch myself being stubborn. Hahahahaha I love your vids and the intro music is unique and gets me ready to hear some good solid info. Keep up the great work brother it's very much appreciated!
hey Matt, does the northern california waters such as clear lake have round rock or sharp jagged rock of all sizes like arizona lakes such as roosevelt and canyon? this is where i have most of my problems, but, we don't lose many lures at all, a few, but not very often.
I should have re-watched this video before I went on Saturday morning... RIP 2 squarbills and 1 lipless crank lol. I'll be sure to try and improve my 'feel' and use the technique you described.
Great Info! Im new to bass fishing and an issue Im having is when I feel that "heavy" feeling, its either about to get hung up or theres a fish on the other end that I didnt feel bite.. Ive set the hook on more rocks, logs, and branches than Id like to admit, and have caught bass by taking the chance as well... So how do you distinguish if theres no tell tale tap, bite, etc...?
That "weight" just takes time. In the beginning you set on all of it but over time they will stop feeling the same and you'll instantly know the difference. Its still just pressure... but its "different" pressure.
Watch for line movement. When I started taking my son fishing, he would constantly set the hook on logs and grass. I got him to watch his line. When a light strike occurs and you can't feel it, the bass is always moving with the bait. That's when you set the hook.
Thanks man. I love Quantum! I've never tried the pocket knockers? I have seen Chris zaldain hit the end of the rod below the reel, he has some trick that always works. The weight on the lock snaps just slides down the line to the lure and you just pop it and it comes undone. By using the sinker weights with loop on the top. I bet you guys have tons of tricks. What reels do you use?
yeah ok but it depends on the terraine ,what about brush piles and wood and heavy weed? also why is soft tip important, so you can easily feel it getting heavy?
I want a line/leader system for bending out hooks buried in the rocks with a 2500 - 3000 size medium capacity spinning reel with decent drag -- could i manage to move rocks/logs branches and retrieve lure with 40 lb braid to 20 lb mono leader? I don't like leaving tackle out there, even if it means ruining the jig/hook to get it back and in the trashcan. @TacticalBassin
You guys should do a video on fishing wood cover. I fishing in the south and the wood cover is aweful for getting snagged up. Thought y'all might no some good baits, trebble hooks, and other things nobody talks about.
Same concept as casting over a log. If you just reel in you bait is gonna get stuck, but if you rip it over the log you will save it. Is that a good interpretation?
Any way to avoid fishing line? Rhetorical question. It seems impossible. The second you feel it, you're in it. That's when the money pole or plug knocker helps!
I have a small lake close to my area that has some real nasty rip rap. You can be careful but still get hung sometimes so I made a homemade plug knocker😅😅😅 works great!
I get snagged so much when I go fishing that it has become an internal joke in my family. The worst thing is that the fish just keep mocking me when I get snagged, they start jumping above the water and swim around the lure, but I can't catch them
Having fished mainly ponds growing up, I never worried too much about this. First time out on the lake, I lost several lures and realized I had a lot to learn. Thanks for the video, you explained it very well.

Damn man
I lost a lunkerhunt phantom spider
Some hooks and a bullet sinker
Timed that ending perfectly.
Ha! That's about as good as it gets
Huntnfishnuts they say timing is everything, that takes the cake!!
That fish was a paid actor.
I know this is old, but new to me and I was ultra disappointed to lose a crankbait today after using it for the first time. First time I’ve ever used one. Well, that’s learning! Thanks for the video!

Great perspective on the kayak angle. THanks for sharing!

Awesome to hear someone explain it in more depth!
"WoW! Look out".... so funny Matt! Super duper radical tip.
Hahaha
Thanks for breaking it down so simply! Never pictured it that way. Thanks again!
You're welcome!
between this technique and snapping my line at the beginning of a snag has saved me a ton of money. before these tactics I was spending a ton of money on lead heads for swimbaits
Awesome! We're glad its working for you Nathan!

I will try leader tomorrow
Does having a leader like that really make a huge difference? I don't know much about fishing
Great advice Matt!
Also, just take a look at your like/dislike bar. 405 likes (as I write this), NO DISLIKES. You guys should be very proud, definitely one of the best fishing channels on RUclips.
Thank you! Now that you point it out, that is pretty amazing!
I'll have to try this. I love my fishing spot, but the rocks have a laser target on my back, sometimes just letting it sink to the bottom on the cast, will snag up before you even move the damn thing.
I'm the same way lol
That was a good bass, he knew exactly when to bite.
Haha, pretty perfect timing!
Thank you so much, I will try this. I'm so tired of losing my good baits to snags.
I lose more rattle traps than conventional cranks man I really appreciate this one the most wisest tip I've received in a while
Thanks for watching and commenting, we appreciate it!
I'm the guy who gets snagged all the time... lol. Thanks for the tip man
Lol! You guys are both cracking me up!
Me too lol
Same here Bro .............shit :-(
I'm learning the spots I've been hitting this season. Tons of obstructions I've found but if i get lazy or start rushing I get snagged. If I get a good bass and leave with all my baits, that is my ideal fishing trip. Lol
I think Tim was in another boat out of camera view and put that bass on Matts hook LOL. The timing was too perfect
James Barron lol that’s funny making their under water videos in a dough boy pool with sand and duck weed lol I know they have the water wolf but some of the shots they get I’m like how the heck are they throwing one line with the water wolf and then tops lures to that spot I gotta know how they do it because it’s amazing
Wow I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge!

Good tips, nice last minute catch at the end. That bass was reading the script
Ha! Thank you!
Best angler in youtube...learned a lot from u man..keep it up..
Thank you!
Love the constant big tips man! Thanks bro.
You're welcome Cam!
I just lost $40 worth of terminal tackle in the snaggiest lake I’ve ever seen. I came home and instantly checked to see if you guys had a video on the topic.
Not. Disappointed.
Hey, at least it's not just me. Trying to learn to fish but holy smokes I can lose a lure...
Haha this channel has covered EVERYTHING it seems like
You gave that instruction so nicely, and so picturesquely, I can almost see my lure hoppin' over that sh*t on the botom. I will be so pissed when I loose my lure today :) :)
Great tips, look forward to getting less snags. Keep up the terrific videos!
Thanks for commenting!
Great beginner fisherman tips!!! Good video!!
Thanks!
I've watched every video you guys have posted in the last year, keep up the great work, I've been learning a ton!
If you are looking for video ideas, could you do a video on skipping docks with a baitcaster? And tips in terms of reel settings, lure selection, and lure weight?
Thanks Ben! Yeah, I think we can do that. Great idea!
I like how you caught that fish at the end!
"Ooooooohhhhh - that was a fish" - Classic lol!!! Thank you for the tip
Ha!
packing the boat and heading to Pardee Reservoir. Probably going to toss a crankbait or two. Great tips that's usually the first thing I'll tell anybody that's relatively new to cranking. Especially when I'm handing them one of my $14 crankbaits to tie on!!
We hope you caught them out there! Pardee is sure a fun fishery!
Thanks good tips ! I like the little tips like this iv been fishing a long time and it's the stuff you really don't think about that can help
Great tutorial....lost quite some lure..but think it will help knowing this information
Couldn't have planned that outro any better matt!
No doubt! Thanks for watching!

What's his TV show?
Wow, super informational man!! Thanks!
DX784C? Its quite an accomplishment when you start to get the hang of fishing gnarly rock. Good subject!
That was the 743 but you're close. There are links to the rod, reel, line, etc... in the vid description. Thank you for watching and commenting!
If you spend any significant time on the water it should come naturally. He makes a great point. Those guys that don't get that chance should be aware of what he's saying! Save you some $$$$

good tips Matt good catch at the end.

that's a great tip thanks Matt I'm sure it'll be useful when I'm casting my 8inch Huddleston

perfect ending to an informative video!

Thanks Ray!
My Quantum Smoke Inshore 7"6 mh rod has a lot of tip. Excellent rod and paired w/ Inshore Smoke.
Thank you Brother! That's a great setup and I love the weight tip... Tim uses those little pocket knockers as well with great success.
Thanks man. I love Quantum! I've never tried the pocket knockers? I have seen Chris zaldain hit the end of the rod below the reel, he has some trick that always works. TacticalBassin You're welcome Matt. keep up the great content!!
TacticalBassin in one of your videos, you said the fish will usually bite the red hook right?
We primarily use Shimano, Tim uses quite a bit of Abu Garcia as well. And I see your other comment... yes the fish almost always hit the red hook.
yeah ok but it depends on the terraine ,what about brush piles and wood and heavy weed? also why is soft tip important, so you can easily feel it getting heavy?

woahh saved the day at the end brah
love the opening of the vids!
Awesome advice! I will remember!
Hey Matt I know your a dobyns guy but is there any other rods you think are good? It's really hard to find used dobyns at a good price.
You don't find em used because people don't get rid of them. They're that good.
St. Croix
have you looked at any of the dobyns fury rods? I know they are good and well priced brand new. also maybe check out an Irod fiber.
hay ca-bass you can get a duckett rod white ice for around 110$ very good rods or a castaways rod there a very good rod company to
+Robert Robertson white ice rods are like 200-300$ the ghost rods are 100
God, I missed you guys this summer!
Ha! Thanks bud
great informative video as always!! definitely helps!! thanks
Awesome! You're welcome Bud
great video now my buddy's will stop losing my baits.
Haha, nice!
Glad I found your guys page thanks
Thanks for watching and commenting!
So how do you know when to shake it or to slow your real and let it come to the surface?
Great info Matt
Thanks!
My area the problem are wood sticks and such below the water. Hook sinks into wood
nice tips mate thanks
Will this work with submerges timber?
You guys should do a video on fishing wood cover. I fishing in the south and the wood cover is aweful for getting snagged up. Thought y'all might no some good baits, trebble hooks, and other things nobody talks about.
know*
Same concept as casting over a log. If you just reel in you bait is gonna get stuck, but if you rip it over the log you will save it. Is that a good interpretation?
Yeah that's pretty accurate. You just don't want to let it "settle" deep down into the gaps. As long as you stay up on the tops you're usually okay.
I hope this helps me too. I snag everything.
Haha, it will
Excellent.
Very helpful. Thanks.
You're welcome!
Hey Matt, it looks a lot calmer there than the time we took Sam out. No rollers.:)
Hahahaha Yeah, little bit different :-)
Any way to avoid fishing line? Rhetorical question. It seems impossible. The second you feel it, you're in it. That's when the money pole or plug knocker helps!
Ha! So true and such a pain!
It's called heavy line lol. I get caught on someone's line, or tag a branch trying to skip under, and it's coming with me one way or another lmao.
I stay snagged I believe you don't throw it in there you not going to catch it lmao
How do you get a lure unstuck once snagged?
DUDE Vert Very Good VLOG for sure,,
Absolutely 🤙🏻
Hahahaha that ending was CLASSIC!
Ha!
I use a Weight and lock swivel to undo snagged baits.
how about for chatterbaits, can that concept be applied?
Yes it works the exact same way. Great question!
Soooo, what about casting into a tree limb and watching your lure wrap around it ten times?
I have a small lake close to my area that has some real nasty rip rap. You can be careful but still get hung sometimes so I made a homemade plug knocker😅😅😅 works great!
They save a lot of time and money!
+TacticalBassin you arent kidding, gets em out every time too!
Hah. I was thinking "man how perfect if this video ended with a fish since he didn't catch any". Sure enough. Lol
awesome video
I just lost a bait and now im watching this video
Tried but huddleston is still gone
No clue what structure it was though
can't believe you use shaky head with a baitcaster
LOVE it on the baitcaster.
motomaniac 69420 it’s all personal preference. I agree with you 100%. I only throw worms on a spinning rod but everyone is different.
I love using finesse in general on a baitcaster. The accuracy is what does it for me, with the right rod I can still feel everything
how about a video on what combos you would bring to a tournament if you could only bring 5 and what you would be throwing
Great idea, thanks!
you're welcome. looking forward to it
cool channel, subscribed
Thank you!
what about coral.....
I buy crank baits knowing that I will eventually lose them. If they catch me a couple fish before that then I consider it a win.
I’ve lost 5 square bill cranks this month, I’ve tried everything but once they’re stuck they’re stuck for good
All that talk and he still gets snagged on a fish at the end
Someone needs to show this vid to @apbassin - Peric ;-)
Ha!
I get snagged so much when I go fishing that it has become an internal
joke in my family. The worst thing is that the fish just keep mocking me
when I get snagged, they start jumping above the water and swim around
the lure, but I can't catch them
Haha yeah that is a bummer. Hopefully you can use this trick to keep your bait out of the snags. :-)
Same here
I Filip for bait fishing I think I might have your solution, have a look at my channel.
