Hello, are pop rivets mostly used for the entire airframe? Or are they only used for part of it. If so then what else is used?

The Onex is all pop rivets (aviation grade pulled rivets) unless you decide to change the way some things are designed to go together. For example, the tail cone on a Onex is totally inaccessible when built to the plans with pop rivets holding on the belly skin. If you need to get in there, you probably can't. We split that belly skin and installed nut plates on the lower longerons, then dimpled the skin and put it in place with flat head screws. if you need to get into it now you will have screws to remove. At least you won't have rivets to drill out in that instance.

@@TangoSierra2022 Ok, How long did it take you to build the plane?

Did you have issues with the main spar bolts (AN3-15A) called out in the plans as being too long? I'm trying to attach the factory made spar to the brackets that attach the main spar to the fuselage and the bolts are to long... trying to make sure I'm not way off.

We have had several instances where the call outs were with too long or too short. Everything should have minimum of three threads showing when but is on. My h more than that is overkill and less than that is not acceptable.

Did you have to drill the holes on the wing ribs or did they come pre drilled from sonex?

    • @TangoSierra2022

      Thanks for following us Scott!
Ribs come pilot drilled on the ends for fit to the spars. Rear spar comes match drilled to mate with holes on the trailing edge of the wing skin. Once the top trailing edge of the skin is mated and clecoed, a ratchet strap is handy for pulling the skin around the ribs and clecoing the bottom skin to the rear spar at the trailing edge. Wing skins come pilot drilled and you match those holes up with a center line on the rib and drill through for a matching hole on the rib. Cleco in place and do the next one. Once the skin and ribs are match drilled and clecoed in place you go back and up-drill the holes to 1/8". Then take off the skin, deburr all holes top and bottom on skin and ribs, cleco back in place and begin pulling rivets. Watch the newer video where I fit the inboard wing skins and you will see how time consuming it can be. Blue skies to you! Capt T
