I recall an artical in an aviation magazine about the " Breezy " . The author got to fly one. He said it was so unusual flying ,sitting in the open on the end of a boom.
He put it through it's paces then went on to say ,"and then I did a spin. This was something I would never care to repeat " I got a chuckle out of that.

I grew up in Chicago When Carl and his friends designed and built the first one. It is so much fun flying around on one! If you get a chance fly one!

I remember being rather impressed with this aircraft back in the early 80’s. I fell in love with its simplicity. I was at Embry-Riddle in FL and a fellow student with a Private ticket bought one. He had it delivered to Daytona Beach. Showed it off. It was a nice aircraft.
He then got it moved over to DeLand where he was to learn how it flew. He was told/advised to do numerous high-speed taxi’s followed by a few ground effect passes over the runway. A good idea for anyone not familiar with a new (to them) aircraft. After his first high-speed taxi, it appeared he felt comfortable enough to fly it. At the same time we were asking out loud: “What is he doing?!”, he stalled it.
Even the (seemingly) simplest of aircraft can and will teach us that aviation: “ . . . is terribly unforgiving of carelessness, incapacity, or neglect.”

Wollers around like any of cubs with a Clark Y airfoil. Flying a J3 on windy day has always been a challenge.

See one of the originals inside Pilot Pete's restaurant @ Schaumburg, IL airport 06C.
The crazy folks at C56 have a flying original and a few copies too.

Like John previously mentioned, I remember the original Breezy flying out of what was then called the Chicago Hammond Airport, now Lansing Municipal. This would have been in the mid 60's. It often flew over the neighborhood in the summertime.
Would still love to take a ride in one! Is there anyone in Central Florida flying one?

That exceptionally long and some what wide wheel base looks like it adds a good bit of safety margin to landing; though it it may need that as the low speed flight appears some what unstable. That may have just been the wind conditions that day. It would be good to know if that was the case. I am also curious how much this air craft weighs with what appears to be a lot of Chrome molly tubing for an open slow speed craft.
It does appear to clime exceptionally well though.
As always, thanks for showing this.

Yea, I was wondering about the chrome moly and how it would do with carbon fibre tubing instead?

Being so far out on the nose really shows how much it moves back and forth. When you are sitting further back towards the rear wheels you don’t notice it.

I had to chuckle when he said he didn't fly it in the rain. If he lived in the midwest, he wouldn't fly it in the winter either. If he did, he would need deicing... for the pilot.

Very interesting aircraft, but slightly too...rustic...for me. I think if I ever built a similar aircraft, it would be an Excalibur, which seems positively fancy by comparison...lol. Thanks for the great video!

Looks a bit tail heavy. But probably so with only one pilot. That Clark Y is very stall resistant, or else that abrupt rotation might have led to a snap roll with high crosswinds. I dislike negative comments on YT but may I humbly suggest a soft field takeoff technique next time? Very seat of the pants aircraft.

This is Wright Brothers bike shop stuff. When you say Welding for the tubes. Do you not mean Brazing as in how Bicycle tubing is butted toegether?

    • @429thunderjet2
      @429thunderjet2 2 года назад

No brass, steel welding rod is used. Tig welding is just about the same as gas welding but Tig is said to produces a better weld. Most race cars are Tig Welded. When That bird was built it was probably gas welded, done with an oxy acetylene torch. Good Tig welding machines are rather expensive and Mig welding is somewhat faster & easier.
It surprises me they still Braze bicycles?! I would never Braze something that could be welded. Although a lot of bicycles are aluminum now days. I helped gas weld on a Pietenpol Air Camper at our tech school many years ago. Don't know if they ever finished her though.

It's as close to being a bird as you can get. It was just the wind that day They fly very nice. The pa 12 wing is the best in my opinion. The tail works better if it's made 2 inches bigger all around. Have fun, Fly Safe!

"60/60/60" sure sounds safer than Boeing. No interest in a "kit" though so better start coming fully assembled with and standardized holistic profile and applied materials. A canard wing i would think would need to be seen as essential to create a "proper" control surface for such a layout but great review and fun to watch this bird in actual flight.
No way I would ever fly that as is under any condition but literally "makes for an interesting air frame" as a kind of modern day though clearly inferior "Wright Brothers Flying Machine" product. Really should include a launch mechanism as the Wright Flyer did to create proper attitude at take-off. "Ski's instead of wheels" at the nose makes for another clearly necessary flight safety item as there is no rolling resistance indeed the exact opposite at landing. Some type of "safety parachute system" would seem a requirement as well. Fascinating product nonetheless.
