    Do you have a sport pilot or private pilot license? I have living places walking distance from both 5d5 and VLL all I want to do is fly around the state especially between Detroit area and all northern lower Michigan. I don’t know where to find sport pilot training only programs for full private license. Do you think sport pilot is enough for what I described? Thank you!

    • @TangoSierra2022
      @TangoSierra2022 5 месяцев назад

      I would go all the way to private pilot, less restrictive. When I began flying many years ago all I wanted was a private license so that I could fly around Michigan. Sport pilot rating did not exist. Once I got bit by the bug however, I wound up with MEI/ATP/ Citation rated. Has taken me all around the world!

    Hello, are pop rivets mostly used for the entire airframe? Or are they only used for part of it. If so then what else is used?

    • @TangoSierra2022
      @TangoSierra2022 9 месяцев назад

      The Onex is all pop rivets (aviation grade pulled rivets) unless you decide to change the way some things are designed to go together. For example, the tail cone on a Onex is totally inaccessible when built to the plans with pop rivets holding on the belly skin. If you need to get in there, you probably can't. We split that belly skin and installed nut plates on the lower longerons, then dimpled the skin and put it in place with flat head screws. if you need to get into it now you will have screws to remove. At least you won't have rivets to drill out in that instance.

    Great, Great video. The info you provided was very informative. Would a used STOL aircraft be better for 1st time buyers or try and build one? The whole project would be a learning experience. Thanks, Danny Stockdaile USAF, Retired

    • @TangoSierra2022
      @TangoSierra2022 Год назад

      It depends on your background. If you are mechanical and have an interest in airplanes then building is a great way to know your airplane. If you are simply interested in flying and don't get a kick out of flying then just tackling the learning curve on flying may be enough for you. Either program, learning to fly or building an airplane of your own will likely take a couple years . . . unless you hook up with someone like Billy Payne at Plane Fun Aircraft who can assist you in building a Just aircraft and cut your build time substantially. When you weigh out the alternatives, Billy's assist program is pretty cheap.

      I do not have an answer for you. Flight training programs vary widely. If you are interested in learning STOL techniques I would again say you should probably contact Billy Payne in NC. He does STOL specific training. This would allow you to become familiar with basic flying techniques and requirements as well as becoming familiar with taildragger and off field operations.

    I'm a bit late finding the video. In the early 80s I was going to college at TN Wesleyan College in Athens and flew out of McMinn County. Nancy Dailey was my primary flight instructor (there is a memorial dedicated to her at the airport now). Great lady and instructor. I spent a lot of time at the airport and ended up helping Nancy's mechanic Eric Graves tear down engines and prep airframe for paint. Ended up spending a lot of time with Charlie Nelson and got some rides with him in his 210 hp Swift and the Buckaroo. Biggest thrill is when he let me take the stick and do some rolls in the way to McGee Tyson. Charlie was also a great man and would help anyone. Such great memories.
