I watch your videos not because of your dogs ....but because of you.....Tammy ...you are a brilliant and awesome lady...could listen to you all day....
Hi Tammy, I too have a gsp and for the first 2 years I almost regretted getting her. I too had the 30 ft rope and then went to the E collar which works well and still need use it 5yrs later. I recently had to get GPS collar because to many times she has takin off after deer which oftentimes leaves us so frustrated wondering where when and if she'll make it back. Everything you've said is spot on !!! Thanks for showing me that I am not the only one with gsp issues lol 😊
Definitely not alone! My youngest also chased after a deer once... wasn't sure he'd come back either!! These dogs can definitely be challenging and make ya feel nuts every now and then LOL
Hello Miss Tammy. I’ve just acquired a 18 month old GSP puppy and he’s quite the handful but he’s very smart. I’m trying to do the best for him so we’re learning together. Thanks
I am glad you talked about the shock collar. My friend has a jack russell. He is well behaved but she uses one because rarely he gets too focused on a chipmunk or squirrel and won't stop till he gets it. The shock collar saved his life as he was about to cross the road and a truck was coming but the pup was so close to the chipmunk he didn't notice the car or the calls to come back. My friend used the collar and he stopped right on the shoulder of the road before he got hit. I think people think negatively about shock collars because they think people who have them are constantly shocking their dogs. When used correctly it is barely used and usually for the safety of the dogs.
Oh my goodness! So thankful your friend had one on his pup! Those situations are exactly why I put one on my dog. But I’ve never actually had to use it thank goodness!!
@@Tammy_Bashore it was scary and I am glad too! I just adopted what I believe has some sporting breeds in him from the shelter. I am getting an e-collar for him while I train him to be off leash. Currently he is on a long lead. I have an older german shepherd mix who wanted to stay by my side constantly since the beginning so ty for the tips as I think training my new pup I will need a different approach!
Oh, love your channel! Worked in companion animal behavior and had 4 cases of people who adopted GPS from Humane Society and wanted them to be Golden Retrievers 😏. Luckily we live in rural setting, but, I helped rehome 3 who are now birdhunting pros and and the 4rth helped turn her person into a trail runner 🤣. Happy endings, but, it's so important for people to understand the needs of sporting breeds before bringing one home! Thank you for this channel! Recommending it to anyone interested in this wonderful breed!
We rescued our German Shorthair and he was 10. He is now going on 11 and he is leash trained now. He did not even need any training. I think it's the way you treat them. He potty trained himself. This breed does not need official training unless you are going to hunt them. They make perfect pets.
Great video, important to mention to I guess is that you gotta be prepared that gsp's will have a wide circle around you when walk off leash, personally I've used an e-collar to, mostly to train her stopping jumping onto people and to stop her chasing young deers in our forest.
i feel the same way about leashes and my Lab. I used a long leash for awhile until he got to 70-80 lbs and i wound up on my butt when i stepped on it. good info for next dog.
I wish I could do that but I'm in Chicago so I can only take her to dog parks to let her run free and even there she just goes into hunting mode for the squirrels the whole time. Gsp's are such silly and amazing dogs. Keep up the great vids.
I trained my GSP for on leash and off. They respond to calls, hand claps or whistles. It is a thing of beauty to see a dog work in the fields and you my loose sight , but all you have to do is give a command then they are coming back as fast as they can .
hey! im over by rapid city and just stumbled across your channel cause i was looking for info on pointers. i actually fell into a mostly gsp mix(his tail is super long and has bright blue eyes) im pretty sure he came from one of the reservations but he's a blast to have around and i really want him to be able to roam around the hills without a leash. but your vids have been super helpful! super stoked your from sd also lol.
hey fellow South Dakotan! The hills brings a whole other layer with more predator animals - you'll want to make sure your pup is trained to hike closer to you than I train mine. I allow mine to wander a bit further out of sight. Have fun!
I have a 6 year old gsp and live in Illinois. By law a gsp must be leased to take her for a walk. I take her to a old cemetery that is fenced in to allow her the freedom of being unleashed. I usually walk her 7 miles in the morning in a forest preserve and 3 miles in the afternoon.
Hey Tammy! Thanks for your vids, they're great! Also a mom and outdoors lover in a mountain town in BC Canada, we just patiently waiting for our first GSP pup soon. I do a lot of mountain biking, have you ever tried biking with them?!
So exciting for you! Yes, I do take mine on bike rides every now and then. Mostly on our paved bike trails around town. I've never tried mountain biking with them tho. And you'll want to talk to your vet, because I think they say to wait until they are at least a year old just to make sure they are developed in their joints, etc. Have fun!!! GSP pups are so crazy fun!
Berkley and Bentley sound quite similar. Have you tested to see if they respond to their name ... well, as well as a GSP can be expected to respond to their name..
When you can let go of the leash and he doesn’t run away with no recall. I usually have the leash drag behind them until they’re ready. And we do a lot of practice in open areas where I can’t lose them or they won’t get injured.
My GSP is now 18 months old, last winter it was kinda cold (for dutch standards) -10/15 Celcius, and Pippi (my GSP name) would just run fully pully speed trough the snow and look for bridges under what the water was not frozen yet, jump in, take her ice bath, jump out, shake it off and go fully pully again, so my answer would be no, no coat needed.
I do not put coats on my dogs. But I also do not take them outside in temps below 10 degrees Fahrenheit. I haven't had an issue otherwise. And we keep the timeframe we are outside appropriate to the temperature.
I’m getting my first ever GSP tomorrow and I’m so excited it’s stupid! It’s my dream dog. Any suggestions for my future with my girl? Her name is going to be Liberty Grace and she will be going by Libby.
Lots of suggestions! But mostly, patience. They love to learn and an idle GSP mind is a naughty GSP mind. :) They are the absolutely best breed if you treat them right.
Hi! I don't usually walk them. We run around in the back yard and play. I usually shoot for an hour a day. Sometimes that is broke up into 15 min or 30 min chunks, but overall they get 60 minutes at least per day of really fast running. :)
Got my GSP. She is 12 weeks. I am dying to get her out and about. Thanks for the help. Any special vaccines you give your pups for hiking etc?? I am in SoCal and am always afraid of snakes here in the desert.
I’ve actually never had to shock them. They are trained hunting dogs, so just putting the collars on them is enough to keep them closer to me and rarely out of range. If they do get too far I have always been able to get them back by calling their name.
