I found one of these dogs on the inner barrier on the interstate in downtown traffic in a thunderstorm at 6am in the morning. He had a broken hip scared to death shaking. He had lost hope. I worked for the state police at the time but I was in my personal vehicle I pulled over put on my rain jacket and sprinted across 3 lanes of traffic to get to him. I realized that his hip was broken and he was in shock. I pulled my jacket off and wrapped him in it and raced across three lanes back to my truck. I was on my way to work and I was drinched. When I got to work the Tropper’s call the police dog handlers who is a vet and a Tropper and he realized that he had a broke hip and fell out of a truck. The troopers all pitched in and we got the surgery 1000.00. He recovered at my house and we would take him to the state police compound for his rehabilitation everyday. This dog would not leave my side hardly . We tried to find the owner but couldn’t and finally one of the troopers that own a ranch (a lot of land) wanted him . He has a great home now and my dog and me see him regularly. My dog help in his recovered because he was older and stayed with him a lot. We go haunting a lot out there and they play a lot together. This story made the news here. But nothing was said about state police or any of the involvement .government policy great dog breed ALOT of energy with these dogs. I’m fortunate enough that my dog is the same way. He has to burn a lot of energy so I was ready for that . During his rehabilitation we work him constantly on his movement and skill to not hurt him as he was healing but still burn energy. He’s a great dog and gos out of his mind excited when he sees me. He knows I saved him. God Bless
😪 this is a beautiful story so happy you found him a hom can not see how people can be so cruel but there is enough nice People like yourself that out weighs them
i had a kennell full of them for almost 30 years...started w/ a very smart & biddable female and she basically trained all the rest of them by them watching how we operated in the field & reinforcement. They were never indoor dogs since we lived on 15 acres in Hawaii....had access to several hundred thousand acres of private land & public land as well...fantastic dogs.
I had 2 GSP's. Their personality's were 180 deg. from each other. Meg was your common, bounce off the wall with never ending energy. Gyp was SOOO laid back and no where near as excitable. Every trip to the vet, she would say she couldn't believe how laid back Gyp was. Gyp was definitely the better hunter, I feel because she was so laid back and focused. Meg died 2 years ago, I just lost Gyp at 15yo a few months ago. They are a great breed. I think I have gained 15 lbs. since I don't go out and run them every day.
Love GSPs. Smartest breed Ive ever owned by far and best hunters bar none. Never have to teach them the same thing twice but theyre also stubborn as an oak stump and tend to figure out everything you dont want them to by themselves. Cant wait for my next pup lol.
Can't imagine life without my GSP now. Lots of work but SO worth it. I LOL'ed several times in your video because most of it I struggled through as well. Thanks for the video.
You’ve provided a great snap shot on what to expect if a GSP chooses you to be at their beck and call for 10-15 years.Im lucky enough to have been selected by 3 GSP’s now.Whether you are young, old, fit, lazy,a hunter or Vegan a GSP will definitely enrich your life.I agree that you need to do your research and be willing to spend quality time with them every day.My GSP loves nothing more than being out hunting with me every chance she gets. Cheers from Australia.
I have a year and a half old GSP and he has tons of energy. He is obsessed with fetch and is phenomenal at finding the ball when it gets lost. Lately, when I don't have time for a long hike, I've been taking him out in the hills and following him in the truck while he runs. He gets up to 30 mph and will sustain that speed if I can keep up (not always possible on dirt roads). If I hike for an hour or two plus following him in and out in the tuck, he'll be calm for a couple days. Although, it seems like the harder I run him, the faster he recovers and the more he needs. He can definitely be a handful when he doesn't get enough exercise. He accidentally broke my nose while trying to jump over me, ran through a barbed wire fence and ripped his head and shoulder open, won't be contained by any fence under 6 feet (I think its only a matter of time before he jumps my 6-foot fence), and put his leg through the drywall while running around the house. He has been great with other animals. We taught him early not to go after chickens and other farm animals. He still occasionally stalks and points at them but breaks off on command. They are very affectionate, smart and eager to please dogs, but I definitely wouldn't recommend them to everyone.
@@matthewmejia2062 I used an e-collar starting when he was around 6 months old that has beep, vibrate, and shock. Each time I wanted him to come back I would call him then slowly go through the buttons starting with the beep. He quickly learned to come when called or to the beep. Then when hiking, I frequently recall him and let him go again immediately. It is routine now so I don't hardly have to call him back anymore because he returns every few minutes on his own. The beep is great because I can recall him when he is out of earshot. The collar is a Garmin Sport something and has a mile or so range.
Playing fetch is great exercise if they will do it. Our 1-year-old GSP isn’t the neurotic retriever that our Border Collie was, but she gets more excited about it if she is rewarded with tug of war when she brings the toy back (some are now saying that tug is actually a good thing for hunting dogs). We have rabbits in our neighborhood, and I walk her while she’s wearing a harness, and I allow her to pull when she’s on the harness. It’s good exercise, and she gets opportunities to practice both pointing and the “leave it” command.
I had a GAP who lived for 12 years. He was the best dog I ever owned. Great noses, full of energy and very loyal. They will test you though. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Great video. Thank you
Love your video. Makes me miss my old GSP He was liver and weighed 90 lbs of pure muscle. Best energy dog that made me run and exercise daily. Your dogs are beautiful
Until my GSP's were in their mid teens I don't remember them every getting tired except in extreme heat. Even then only for a second no matter how long they ran. Like she said they were always ready for a good cuddle too.
@@lukesteele4510 haha! YES! The summer months are awesome because they wear out faster. ha! In the winter, they go forever!!!!! Thats why I go a lot further and do more hill climb hikes in the winter to help wear them down.
I absolutely LOVE my GSP! I read about how high energy they were and I felt prepared and put a good game plan in place. Thank goodness. They still exceed what you read though. It is definitely a fact that they MUST get outside every single day! Loved your video, glad I stumbled upon it. I’m just over in the 307!
RUclips has planted these videos in front of me lately. April 2020 we had to put our third GSP down. The last two were females that were close to bookends. Our last Daisy was so close to our Maggie. Their birthdays by month were 3 days different from each other. They were both runts of their litters. The day that we went to the vets first visit was 3 days different and their weights were also close. Watching these two were so enjoyable and they have brought back many great memories. I would agree with e everything that she to describe this breed. Get one your Dr will know that you are getting your excercise!
Great video! I am on my 2nd GSP and love this breed so much! I just lost my first one last Monday after almost 16 years. They are so loyal, loving, playful and full of energy. I had 2 GSP's, 1 Border Collie and 1 Heeler up until Monday when I lost my old man. I love the working dog breeds, but GSP's are so awesome. I will definitely be getting another one soon.
You probably could. But I tend to keep mine indoors when it’s too hot. I dont want to burn their paws on concrete when running. And there just isn’t enough water to help them when it’s hot.
I appreciate your help regarding that one. I'm in Australia, but in a cooler part. It can reach 38 Celcius here, but normally, it's in the high 20',s. Many thanks
As an owner and trainer of these dogs for many years including using them under a falcon, I know exactly what you are saying. As you so rightly said it is so very rewarding hunting with them. They are my most preferred hunting buddies we have a stunning time. Even after a gruelling day at the water ducking and goosing they are more than ready to go hunt upland game with you to the point of insistence. Best hunting dogs I have ever owned including English spaniels and English pointers. And, anyway what’s a little hair between friends?
I grew up with GSPs and was pretty aware of their needs but still had a few surprises when we got ours about 2 years ago. Fence CLIMBING- not just jumping. Our 4 foot fence got extended to 5 and now has an extra foot of chicken wire that won’t allow his paws to get purchase. He also figured out that getting on top of the hot tub allowed him to leap just far enough to clear the fence so now the hot tub is in the middle of the yard. Leather shoes are irresistible. Any other shoe will do in a pinch. On the plus side my kids and husband have finally learned to put their shoes away in their closets. Counter surfing has also helped everyone put food away promptly. In fact, we’ve embraced a more minimalist, uncluttered decorating style as well. GSPs don’t consider a toy well chewed til it’s in pieces and they’re very good at it. I’ve learned to crochet rope after figuring out how much chew toys were costing. Even after getting exercise my boy wants to go places with me. Emotionally needy but I somehow don’t find this irritating.
GSP are so smart, full of energy and LOVE. They are so goofy, but do not let that fool you. Very protective and will risk their lives for your family. I know I'm leaning the scales because all dogs are wonderful, but the best all around dog.
I had no idea they had so much energy. I adpoted a 6 yr old..female.. she runs wide open an hr.never stops unless i make her lol. She hates to go to bed.really never wants to give it up.thx so much for sharing
This put a smile on my face because I had the exact same experience! You really have to put the time in with this breed, and they are The best snugglers! Very loyal and love to please! Sweetest dogs Ever!!
I had a GSP for my 1st dog. Omg they never get tired!!! I am older now and have a pit bull. But I’ll always love the pointers. Pits are easygoing and easier to train.
I too had a GSP. For 16 years and two pit bulls! One Pit live 15 the other only nine. Is the best pack ever! But the pitbulls were so much easier!! So easy to train so willing to please lol. But my GSP is glued to my side at all times.
Good video! I so much appreciate your honesty!! 2 dogs of ANY breed are more work than 1. "People" want a second dog...not dogs. The 2 dog rationale (companionship) is VERY weak. I often ask folk, "So if you are front and center like a single dog in a family, how much do you appreciate them sharing their love/attention with another dog?" One thing you CAN count on regarding having a second dog. That would be the expenses. I ended up with a second dog - long story. Both my first dog and I would have been better of without the second dog but.... Thanks for your video!
You buy it for the hunt. That has to be the main reason. What really helps is handmade whistles , one for eachother.. They can be nuts, but they love to work..that's the key to train them.
@@Tammy_Bashore Mine is 10 yrs now. He is retired now at that age so i don't hunt with him anymore.. It's a superb family dog but there breed is for hunting, and that should be the reason if you buy it.. Did not say that there not good to have at house, but it's not the best choice. They are nutsacks even if they are 10 yrs old..This dog is not for everyone.
I had a black Labrador that I worked with before we got our gsp, the lab would fetch and the GSP would want to know what he was chasing. I found that the lake was wonderful for both and it worked them out a lot. It was cool to see everyone that was around watching our dogs with a smile.
Beautiful dogs!! I have two also and they are polar opposites. I lived on a farm here in Australia and every afternoon I’d take the dogs down to the river, go swimming and throw rocks (they chase but never catch, so neurotic!!) They are the best companions for adventure. Hiking in the winter, swimming in the summer and their coat is perfectly suited to Australian bush conditions. You’ll have a long wait until they calm down. Our oldest is 8 and he’s still a running machine. Great post, thanks. 👍🐶
The most honest info I've seen on GSPs. And they do make you smile. Luckily my Misty who I lost at almost 16 this past July didn't bark. But that face when they look at you and so kind. I swear mine could outrun a greyhound. Also they wake up at 3am and want to wrestle. Thanks for the memories.
This was really informative! My family and I are getting our second gsp pup in May and we are so excited! The gsp we have right now is almost thirteen years old so we decided that we wanted to get another one! They are over all great hunters and definitely super cuddly!
Great video and all so true. I do a lot of jogging and wanted a companion to run with. What I didn't figure is that an hour at a jog wouldn't come close to wearing out my GSP. Only took the edge off. She needs to go fast and hard. Bought a bike leash, which she loves, and after two hours on sandy paths she's winding down (though she'd happily run another two hours). I'm lucky that near my house, we have access to endless wilderness. Biking, hiking, letting her off leash to explore and hunt all are options. Also true that if she misses exercise even a day, she's like an overheated steam engine about to blow. She's trying to contain herself, but the energy is beyond her. So, whatever the weather outside, and however I feel, we'll be heading out to prevent the tornado inside. But, she's a smart, loving, curious, joyous friend, a definite individual, and, though she's changed my schedule and activities in ways that suit her energy, it's been well worth it. Still, if you think dogs are supposed to lie around sleepy and be exercised by a stroll, don't choose this breed. They're very high-spirited.
Yes... all of what you wrote is so important for people to really read and understand if they are considering this breed. They are incredible companions if you care for them they way the need. Sounds like you are doing a great job!
My GSP is just the center of my world. Saved my hiney so many times with those cuddles. Great running buddies, but alas so many DON’T do the homework and the poor pups get given up for adoption around a year old cos the owner just didn’t know what they were in for. Velcro dog, Prozac paws, 4x4 pup, mischievous monsters... never getting another breed again. Best. Dog. Ever.
I love your description! And yes, I agree that people don't do their research. I was definitely guilty of that. But I'm so glad I pushed through and began to understand their needs. They truly are the best!!
Props! These dogs are very high strung and they require a lot of attention. i have two. One is 2 years old and the other is 10 months old. I love these dogs but they are certainly unique, hard to deal with and require a lot of patience. They are so fun to train and I would trust them around babies, kids or anyone. They are the sweetest and very protective. They live to please you and getting them out to run is crucial for their well being, and you can exercise together. We like to have 2 at a time (adopting them at different times) but eventually having two because they need each other and if you are planning to neglect them and leave them in a small hole with no human interaction, these aren’t the dogs for you. Having two puppies at the same time isn’t a great idea. The training will change regarding their priorities. They are more focused on each other than they are focused on you. We trained the 2 year old first, and then got the puppy. They work very well around each other because we let the older one mature and bond with us before we added another dog to the picture. Love these dogs and one hundred percent recommended under the right circumstances!
We bring up this high-energy-demand as first on the list - but the thing is: it is not all about the energy-demand that creates that feeling, it is their absolute power to keep themselves connected with you and their expectation to have yourself given in this relationship just as much as they give their whole being in it. After having a GSP you grow certain spiritual and mental needs that no other breed can ever satisfy. And yes, a happy GSP is a happy human - when they are pleased with life they can transfer that feeling on you. Suddenly you realize that you don't need antidepressant medication or a drink to be in another world where everything is normal, all is in place and the sky is always blue with the sun shining. That is what GSP brings into your life. And one more thing: you cannot go lazy on them, they do have the skills, power and knowledge to enforce their daily schedule on you - they are all masters in their human's-training.
I had 3 and that was hard, but exciting. I have a new baby GSP, Gunner is now 7 months and very high energy. Gunner is black and white ticked, very beautiful. Love him to death, but totally agree, very demanding with time and cuddling! We live in CA and are moving to TX to have the land we need to enjoy our Baby Gunner, CA is not the right place for a GSP because hard to find a place to let him run. Enjoyed your video.
One of the things I've tried to tell people when getting a hunting, tracking or any sort of working is they were bred for a specific job. You don't have to hunt to own a bird dog (there is nothing like watching a bird dog go 100mph and lock up on a bird) but figuring out how to give them that fix is key. I've got a brittany and GWP that hunt 4+ days a week for 7 months that barely scratches their itch.
Never thought anything of their ability to jump, until my 6 month old jumped on top of his kennel and onto the kitchen counter 😂 reguardless, he is such a love! I’ll never have any other breed.
ugh, yes! The first time mine jumped onto my kitchen island I LOST it and thought I was going to lose my mind with him! Now, he is much better, but goodness that first year was hard!
Beautiful GSP's. I miss my sweet Maddie who was a gsp. She lived a long 13.5 years and we had to put her down. I could feel her hip spine and rib bones. She had to pee all the time. She was a huge sweetheart. Cuddle bug and my sweet monster. Rest easy Maddie. 10/22/05-3/19/19
I’m so sorry for your loss. My beloved beagle passed last summer. I love beagles and GSPs which is how I found myself here. I’m not ready to welcome new dog into my life yet but hopefully soon. Sending you a big hug. The loss is so deeply felt bc are dogs give us such unconditional love and companionship and true friendship.💕🐾
I find the GWP a little more stubborn on occasions she also gets the urge to escape sometimes and the GSP will always follow and that’s a bit stressing for us I also find the gsp more loving 🥰 he loves his human interaction not that the GWP doesn’t it’s just kind of different. To be honest there are subtle differences you notice between the two but hey they truly love each other! I wouldn’t hesitate to bring a GWP into the family.hope it helped
LOVED this video - wish I saw it almost 2 yrs ago when I got mine. Enjoy your fur children!! Thanks for your input re getting a 2nd GSP... will take your advice.
I've owned one GSP and a variety of other working breeds over the years (border collie, labs, german shepherd, doberman, english setter). My GSP had more energy than any of them. By far. I've never seen a dog that loved to hunt more than her. She would go full throttle for hours and the more she ran, the happier she was.
we used to have a gsp named al who was a great pointer and fetched birds too! we used to have to let him run for at least 30 minutes before taking him out to hunt though. he was such an awesome dog with sooooo much personality. i really miss him.
Such a great breed!!! i owned pitbulls my whole life so im used to high energy dogs. but when my last pit died i couldn't get another, he was so unique he was just irreplaceable!! so after awhile i was looking for a high energy breed and came across an awesome little gsp in April, i went and got him right away lol, i thought it was something i could manage because of my past experience with pittys, but boy was i wrong lmao. i hate to say it but i came close to getting rid of him, and this is after years of dealing with aggressive dogs with high prey drives, but i couldn't do it when you get a pup you sign up for 15 years of commitment, and im so glad we pulled through!!! i will own nothing but GSP'S from her on!!
Size of apartment isn't necessarily the most important part. It's whether or not you have a large outdoor space for them to run, and the time to devote at least 1 hour to their need for exercise and stimulation EACH day. If so, then go for it! They are a lovable crazy fun breed. But if not, they will just drive you to crazy town. ha! :)
My dog Liddy is a GSP and she turns 11 this year. We got her when she was about 5 from a puppy farm and she was so timid she would always have her tail between her legs. Poor love was terrified. But she’s all good now :)
That's why it's always good to get a dog that fits your lifestyle. It is great that you learned, adjusted and adapted to your dogs needs. I have an active lifestyle and made a mistake getting and Olde English Bulldogge and it was the worst. 3 to 4 blocks of walking around where we lived and the dog was panting and didn't want to walk anymore. Imagine carrying a dog of 85lbs+ n your arms.. 😓
Aww,they are so cute!We adopted a 50% GSP,25% Labrador Retriever,12.5% English shorthaired pointer and 12.5% Bull terrier puppy a couple of months ago 😊
The smartest dog I ever had didn’t grow up until 7 or so years but he lived until he was 17.He never spent a night outside unless I was outside as when camping the best heater ever in the bed.he could open doors and the fridge door and would steel food when ever he had the chance But also new when he was in trouble just by the way I looked at him. When he was older a whistle or a wave of my arm he new what I wanted and a very good pointer and hunter/retriever.Have fun
I was blessed to own a GSP for 16 years! She lived every day to its fullest! Even want her body broke her spirit didn't. She gave me inspiration never giving up! No matter what life threw at her and took away from her with age she still had her moxie! She was by my side every day for 16 years and she was incontent for whole life.. I even miss the diapers LOL They're amazing dogs but yes the energy is insane LOL I miss her with all my heart I had her with a pack of two more pitbulls.
SheerWill Survival I’m so sorry for your lost! These 2 are my first dogs so I haven’t experienced the loss yet. It definitely makes me sad to think about.
I’ve grown up with German short hairs and I would never get any other bread there the greatest in my opinion you have to run them everyday but I’ve been a pheasant killer for awhile and there by far the best bread for such but even as a family dog your very right you have to run them everyday but there one of the best dog to play with the family especially young children I think there one of the best breads for a young family especially a pheasant hunter
Are you talking about the wire crates we keep indoors? Or the travel kennels we use to take them places? The travel kennels are from Ruff Land Kennels, size is intermediate. But the size is based on the size of your dog. Ours are 55 lbs each.
great video they are busy guys !! Love them so much they are so sensitive also....I always say two are easier and I raised two puppies together and they play together great... people told us with our first that it takes five or six years before they mellow out .....that was in 1990..... nope lol but actually I never have seen this til around ten years old........they are not couch potatoes unless you are on the couch ...
There's no big secret to keeping a GSP well-behaved. All it takes is 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise, every hour. A young GSP is at its best when it is tired and napping. Even then, it's best to keep an eye on them.
@@Tammy_Bashore So far he needs time to run around. However he can't run nearly as fast as he use to. His jumping days are over as well, but he trots and fetches still. He loves it.
We have a Small Munsterlander, their personalities are so similar. You could easily have been talking a bought my Scout. Their great dogs! I like to say ‘He’s a bull in a china shop’. My husband wonts a second, but I think he’s nuts. Lol
So after getting to watch in private 😂 this made me giggle! I want to get Beau a sibling and also name him Benny! But they literally are the best breed ever. He was HARD as a puppy, and our saving grace was getting to send him to a hunting school not far from us and us also getting trained every weekend by his trainer 😂 but he has blown us out of the water with how amazing he was during/after school. We quickly realized as well that exercising him not only keeps us more active outside but also allows us some down time at home, and he’s suuuuch a happy baby when he gets to go outside and then of course comes home and sleeps on us snuggled under “his” blankey. But at night when he’s dead asleep if you pet him he gets so grumpy and growls at you 😂 but he HAS to be spooning you.. just doesn’t want pets. He had his first bird season this year at just 1 year old and did AMAZING! We were blown away. I’m just in love with these crazy, crazy babies! We went from a 300lb mastiff that never moved to the little rat on acid and while it was a very big change, it was the best decision we could have ever made! Also, Beau doesn’t really shed much at all, but we started giving him Greek yogurt from the start for his little gut and coat, and it helps a ton with him not shedding! Obviously the school didn’t give him Greek yogurt so we noticed a big difference when he’d come home for visits versus when he was home for good and getting his Greek yogurt. Loved your video and those cute GSP butts!!!
If you think two is tough, try 4. I've always had one or two, my whole life, until a good friend closed his pheasant hunting ranch in Utah. A deal was made, and I ended up with two of his top dogs. These dogs hunted every day of the season, and came to me as Master Class hunters. I had the pleasure of sharing their lives, until their final days. Ben was about 4-5 years old when I got him, and was the epitome of an alpha male GSP. He hunted harder, deeper, and exponentially more effectively than any dog I had ever worked with. I'll never forget the time when planning an Arizona quail trip, a friend wanted to come along and let his cute little Brit hunt with Ben. I told him fine, but you better bring a pack frame, if you want to get your dog back out of where Ben is going to take us. These dogs are like machines on a hunt! They are not for everyone, and, in fact, I have talked many a person out of getting a GSP, because they are not for the feint of heart couch potatoes, even when they are just "cute little pups" No finer breed exists, in my not so humble opinion! Rock on!
What I wish I knew is how badly I would miss my GSP after she died. She died in early February of this year and I’m still grieving. She was the best dog I’ve ever had. My dad committed suicide when u was 4. My girlfriend died in college while we were dating. My twin brother committed suicide when we were 32. My mom died ten years ago. However, I miss my beloved GSP more than all of them. I plan on getting another GSP this coming summer. If you get a GSP, cherish every moment you get to spend with him/her!!!
@@Tammy_Bashore it SUCKS! There is a hole in my heart that will never be replaced. I miss her so much. I used to look forward to coming home because of the way she would greet me. Now my house seems so strangely empty and quiet.

They were never indoor dogs since we lived on 15 acres in Hawaii....had access to several hundred thousand acres of private land & public land as well...fantastic dogs.
Sounds magical!!
They'll calm down when they're around 7 or 8. Hang in there!😀
Jaqen H'gar oh my!! Something to look forward to ;)
Tell that to my 12yr old
Mjaaa... My lab/GSP mix is turning 9 this year and still acting like a 2 y.o. (energy-wise)
@@csguerdet Yeah, Roger that. Mine lost a step at 12, slowed at 14 and didn't rest peacefully until nearly 16.
@@DrPhillipMcCracken you could be talking about mine !
So sorry for your loss! Time for a new buddy! 😉
Love GSPs. Smartest breed Ive ever owned by far and best hunters bar none. Never have to teach them the same thing twice but theyre also stubborn as an oak stump and tend to figure out everything you dont want them to by themselves. Cant wait for my next pup lol.
Lando Calrisian haha! Isn’t that the truth!!!
If you think GSP are stubborn NEVER get a GWP...
@@DaveDEF82 my german wirehaired was far less stubborn
Best dogs in the whole universe!
Lynn O agreed!
Finally! We have a proper title for them!
You know it! No other breed for me.
Just another German pointing breed. Everything said in the video goes for any of the other breeda aswell.
@@DaveDEF82 That's funny
Highcountryrob I love this. Thanks for the note!
They are very affectionate, smart and eager to please dogs, but I definitely wouldn't recommend them to everyone.
amberhonour oh my gosh! Your dog sounds like a beast!
How did you train him to not run off because mine just runs off
@@matthewmejia2062 I used an e-collar starting when he was around 6 months old that has beep, vibrate, and shock.
True about the fetch. My youngest doesn’t care as much. Maybe plays a couple rounds then lays down.
I had a GAP who lived for 12 years. He was the best dog I ever owned. Great noses, full of energy and very loyal. They will test you though. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Great video. Thank you
that is so true - they definitely test me daily! But I just love them anyhow. :)
Love your video. Makes me miss my old GSP He was liver and weighed 90 lbs of pure muscle. Best energy dog that made me run and exercise daily. Your dogs are beautiful
Thank you! They definitely make me get off my bum!
Just exactly like mine, ....he thought he was a human, and so did I, we never thought of him anything less than one of us.
Single best breed on the planet!! We have 2 and would never trade them for anything! "A tired GSP is a happy GSP"
Eric Viburs haha yep!!
It would be easier if you had three.
Eng Dude lol I already fell for that idea with 2... I’m not sure my sanity would handle 3! 😳
ahah yay 3 x the fun lol

We have 3 also! Not much different than 2, besides taking a little longer to feed them because they're on the raw diet. ❤
@@Tammy_Bashore Your first mistake was assuming sane people adopt GSP's. ;-)
This comment made spit up my coffee 🤣🤣🤣
RUclips has planted these videos in front of me lately. April 2020 we had to put our third GSP down. The last two were females that were close to bookends. Our last Daisy was so close to our Maggie. Their birthdays by month were 3 days different from each other. They were both runts of their litters. The day that we went to the vets first visit was 3 days different and their weights were also close. Watching these two were so enjoyable and they have brought back many great memories. I would agree with e everything that she to describe this breed. Get one your Dr will know that you are getting your excercise!
Yes! Thanks for watching!
Matt Zigler I’m so sorry for your loss!! I can’t imagine the day I don’t have these 2!!
Regarding the running exercises. Can I run a gsp in hot weather please?
Great video
You probably could. But I tend to keep mine indoors when it’s too hot. I dont want to burn their paws on concrete when running. And there just isn’t enough water to help them when it’s hot.
I appreciate your help regarding that one. I'm in Australia, but in a cooler part. It can reach 38 Celcius here, but normally, it's in the high 20',s.
Many thanks
No problem! On hot days, I’ll often take them swimming somewhere instead.
You’re correct about everything! The best dogs in the world.
Phil Ackerman sure are! But then again, it’s all I know!
Super smart dogs. Loyal and very protective, especially of children.
You are so right!
Wow! You are so right. Thanks for the message!
Thank you for this video! We just got our first GSP and I love to learn more honest opinions of the breed in order to be the best owners for her
You’re so welcome! Enjoy the crazy wild and fun ride that is being a GSP owner 🥰
Fun and cute!! Love seeing your GSPs running free in the great outdoors :)
Thanks! Its our favorite way to spend a day!
This is so completely true. Every single word!
GSP are so smart, full of energy and LOVE. They are so goofy, but do not let that fool you. Very protective and will risk their lives for your family.
I know I'm leaning the scales because all dogs are wonderful, but the best all around dog.
Teri Albrett completely agree!!
I had no idea they had so much energy. I adpoted a 6 yr old..female.. she runs wide open an hr.never stops unless i make her lol. She hates to go to bed.really never wants to give it up.thx so much for sharing
they are a handful, but do get better with patience and time!
I have a GSP/Stabyhoun mix and he is loyal too his core but also a handful to be raised.
Sounds interesting !
Absolutely love your videos-watching in the UK. Keep them coming as we’re learning so much. Pick up our 8 week GSP next week. Wish us luck!
You are so kind!!!! Good luck to you and HAVE FUN!
This put a smile on my face because I had the exact same experience! You really have to put the time in with this breed, and they are The best snugglers! Very loyal and love to please! Sweetest dogs Ever!!
Completely! They are definitely worth the effort!
These dogs are awesome companions and incredible hunters!
I had a GSP for my 1st dog. Omg they never get tired!!! I am older now and have a pit bull. But I’ll always love the pointers. Pits are easygoing and easier to train.
Nope, they definitely don't tire easily!
I too had a GSP. For 16 years and two pit bulls! One Pit live 15 the other only nine. Is the best pack ever! But the pitbulls were so much easier!! So easy to train so willing to please lol. But my GSP is glued to my side at all times.
We have three, two of them are rescues. They are the most characterful, talented, and affectionate breed.
It's been awhile since my shorthair "Jake" ! He lived 17 years ! BDE ! He would heal while I was horseback.
Thanks for your video!
honesty is so important! So many people glamorize things. But the reality is, that 2 dogs are hard!
You buy it for the hunt.
That has to be the main reason.
What really helps is handmade whistles , one for eachother..
They can be nuts, but they love to work..that's the key to train them.
Koepex getting a GSP? Not true at all. They are great all around family dogs.
@@Tammy_Bashore
Mine is 10 yrs now.
Very true! They want to hunt and have that desire most definitely!!
Great breed! Full of life.... and, endless energy!
Sure are! Thanks for watching!
I had a black Labrador that I worked with before we got our gsp, the lab would fetch and the GSP would want to know what he was chasing. I found that the lake was wonderful for both and it worked them out a lot. It was cool to see everyone that was around watching our dogs with a smile.
Dogs are so much fun to watch! Incredible animals for sure!
Just ordered my GSP. Enjoying the videos. Nice Firstlite gloves!
Fun!! And thanks! Love FL
That's what I've heard! What a wild breed of dog, but they are so great!
Ally is my fourth GSP female in my life and I would always have a GSP.
She's my little buddy.
I too have an Ali girl. I had her for 16 years! Along with two pit bulls. And she was Alpha LOL!
This is Soooo true! My sister’s GSP thinks she's a lap dog. Many a time she has tried to claim on my shoulders to find room.
LOL yep! They are silly little big dogs.
I'm so sorry you lost yours! I can't imagine that day, no matter how crazy they make me!
This was really informative! My family and I are getting our second gsp pup in May and we are so excited! The gsp we have right now is almost thirteen years old so we decided that we wanted to get another one! They are over all great hunters and definitely super cuddly!
I can't imagine when mine get to be 13 years old! Enjoy your new puppy!
Love these dogs and one hundred percent recommended under the right circumstances!
simply liv yes!! Very good advice!! Thanks for the note!
All true!
What a lucky dog! GSPs loves lots of room for very fast and crazy GSP things! :)
@@Tammy_Bashore he does need a friend though, my churweiner takes a wide birth so he doesn't get run over. After we move, need another big dog friend.
307 Outdoors yes! You are so right. That’s definitely key but hard to replicate!
@@Tammy_Bashore it really is and fortunately I've seen dogs get people who used to be not interested in hunting take it up for the dogs.

I have a 2 yr old GSP and a 5 yr old GWP they are the love of my life!
My husband wants a GWP so bad! How would you compare their temperament?
I find the GWP a little more stubborn on occasions she also gets the urge to escape sometimes and the GSP will always follow and that’s a bit stressing for us I also find the gsp more loving 🥰 he loves his human interaction not that the GWP doesn’t it’s just kind of different. To be honest there are subtle differences you notice between the two but hey they truly love each other! I wouldn’t hesitate to bring a GWP into the family.hope it helped

Sorry for the long-winded comment.
I'm thinking of getting one for my mini apartment.... I'm out of ideas if that would work or not... most beautiful dog I've ever seen
Size of apartment isn't necessarily the most important part. It's whether or not you have a large outdoor space for them to run, and the time to devote at least 1 hour to their need for exercise and stimulation EACH day. If so, then go for it! They are a lovable crazy fun breed. But if not, they will just drive you to crazy town. ha! :)
Thanks a million

That's why it's always good to get a dog that fits your lifestyle. It is great that you learned, adjusted and adapted to your dogs needs. I have an active lifestyle and made a mistake getting and Olde English Bulldogge and it was the worst. 3 to 4 blocks of walking around where we lived and the dog was panting and didn't want to walk anymore. Imagine carrying a dog of 85lbs+ n your arms.. 😓

Yes! Totally agree
Was hoping you can tell me what brand crate you bought your dogs and what size they are? And if you are still happy with them?
Are you talking about the wire crates we keep indoors? Or the travel kennels we use to take them places? The travel kennels are from Ruff Land Kennels, size is intermediate. But the size is based on the size of your dog. Ours are 55 lbs each.

There's no big secret to keeping a GSP well-behaved. All it takes is 30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise, every hour. A young GSP is at its best when it is tired and napping. Even then, it's best to keep an eye on them.
Eric Fleetwood you are so right!
A tired GSP makes the best snuggle buddy.
I take mine to the dog park every day. That works for him. He still needs this and he is 13 1/2 years old.
oh geez - so you're saying the energy never stops! :/
@@Tammy_Bashore So far he needs time to run around. However he can't run nearly as fast as he use to. His jumping days are over as well, but he trots and fetches still. He loves it.
Just got a GSP puppy to keep my Dalmatian company. Perfect companion.
Anyone have a GSP that howls?Ours will be 2 in May and has started the howling habit!
Our youngest will do it when he wants attention or is playing. But otherwise not a lot of noise from them thankfully!
We have a Small Munsterlander, their personalities are so similar. You could easily have been talking a bought my Scout. Their great dogs! I like to say ‘He’s a bull in a china shop’. My husband wonts a second, but I think he’s nuts. Lol
inthewindago Well 2 is definitely not easier than 1 but it is more fun!
So glad to see a love your melon cap! I got one just like it from Camp Rainbow!
I love mine! I own 3 and bought my daughter 2 of them too!
We have a black & white GSP & a beagle! New subscriber 🐾
I've always wanted a black one! That coloring is so rare! Thanks for the support!
Does greek yogurt really help with shedding??? How often and how much do you give???
Yes I would like to know about the yoghurt also how much and how often ?
Hi,May I ask if they herd or can be trained to herd?!!
Good question! I've never seen a GSP do that, but doesn't mean it isn't possible I suppose!
They are not for everyone, and, in fact, I have talked many a person out of getting a GSP, because they are not for the feint of heart couch potatoes, even when they are just "cute little pups"
No finer breed exists, in my not so humble opinion!
Rock on!
GSPs have high separation anxiety. It’s so bad that our gsp Gracie has to vacation with us. I would recommend getting 2 gsp puppies.
One of my GSPs did as well. If we found he does soooo much better when allowed to roam the house instead of being crated!
That is so true!! I have never lost a dog so I have no idea how that feels yet. Not looking forward to it at all!
@@Tammy_Bashore it SUCKS! There is a hole in my heart that will never be replaced. I miss her so much. I used to look forward to coming home because of the way she would greet me. Now my house seems so strangely empty and quiet.
