When my GSP was at 18 months, I started running with him, alternating run/walk days. Initially 2-3 miles a day. I slowly started building mileage and (he just turned two) we’re averaging 40-50 miles a week. Usually on weekends we’ll do a long run of 12+ miles, and we’ve done 2 half marathons. Doing a marathon together in February. I’ve lost 20 pounds…which is one reason I picked the breed. The exercise keeps him really chill.

My girlfriend has 2 pointer dogs, a Weimaraner and a Vizsla and they never calm down lol. The only way to calm them down is to work them. Walks,Runs,Training etc… But it’s not a bad thing because they are very loyal smart dogs. I am getting a GSP pup next month 😀

I believe I would be bored if my dog was anything other than a GSP. Their energy contributes to their personality. They are fun to watch and I think keep us young just trying to keep up to them in the field and around the house. The field in your walk looks like a wonderful area to get out the zoomies and smell exciting things. My pup is 7 this week and still has high energy; he might be losing some of the edge, but just barely.

Hello Tammy, I just found your channel on GSP's. I like your video's, you always bring out the true nature of these beautiful, intelligent strong willed (sometime petulant) dogs. I have had 8 of these dogs through out my life, Hank (Henry the 8th) is my 1 YO we now have. Hank is a big boy, he is about 80 lbs and I swear he was born with springs on his feet. He is much like your two boys, full of energy (all the time) and as you have shown on your videos, they need space to really run up to top speed. At 1 year, Hank is on track with the rest of my beloved GSP's, all of them male gender and all of them were healthy with exercise. As far as when do they slow down???? Only when they have been fully exercised, fed and watered and it is dark outside. This goes on for years. I exercise Hank daily and he is with me all the time whether I am on the tractor (plenty of room in the cab), working on the truck, cooking dinner, you get the idea, he is always ready to help out (and get in the way) whatever I am doing. I am a retired fellow, so patience with Hank has paid off for me. They are sensitive dogs and just talking to them in a calm tone really does de-escalate the amount of energy, anxiety and excitement. They are also clowns, so laughing at them only encourages them. Hence, don't laugh at bad behavior....
Please continue to produce your GSP videos, I really enjoy watching your interaction with them, you have a great relationship with your boys. Well done!

As soon as your pup learns to come to call, it's time for off leash exercise. They obviously do most of the "work" on their own. The sheer joy of their running brings joy to your life. My 3 year old longs for another fast dog to run with. None available? They will make their own fun. Start with a large dog park at off peak hours. The socialation is important for their healthy development. Then if you can find an undeveloped field like in the video, you are set. Every day is a "new" experience even going to the same field every day. Any day above 20° is a great day for them. Only other dog for me is a German Wirehair Pointer.

Have two males, one 10 and one three. Old boy has done marathons with me🙂 they grew up in Cape Town running them on the mountain a min of an hour five days a week.
Now we’ve moved to the south east of the UK & there are no safe open spaces without roads or livestock (farmers will shoot a dog that worries their sheep: nightmare with a GSP!). What I’ve subsequently learned over a year of struggling is that you can tire a GSP with really focused mental work, instead of Zoomies. So retrieve work, scent work, agility, really focused obedience in a high distraction environment… I can do this for 40min a day with each dog (separately, not possible together) & this also tires them out. Thought I’d share for GSP owners who find their circumstances change.
(I still take them running with me. Old boy still plays and will run 3mi/5km quite happily. So yeah, they calm down when they are basically in decline, and not before).

I had to drive all over my area to scope out off leash areas for buddy. He's 3 and nowhere near calm. It's been a struggle. We were attacked at a park in Clarkston, Ga. by an Eritrean that hates dogs and women. I have lost him several times on trails, even with an ecollar. It's a constant adustment, but totally worth it to see Buddy fly over the hills/ fetching balls and hunting the borders of open areas.

I would say about 3 years of age. Depends a lot on the individual. My now deceased Juni woke up as a hunting dog when she was 4 months old and hunted like an experienced hunting dog when she was 1 year old. And she became an adult and calm as a 2-year-old. But it might have something to do with the way I raise dogs. Awesome intro music, hooah! Wishing you and your boy,s a Merry Christmas 🐈

Around 10-10:30pm 😀My GSP cut her ear at one point, and we took her to the vet to sow it up. The vet said "She's had generally anaesthetic so she... she should be tired right now... but that dog doesn't look tired at all". His first GSP experience.

They act like puppies for upto 2 years, and get better each year that passes. As far as hunting drive goes they can be high energy at 14 years old. My friend made a comment about how old and slow my dog looked at 13 years old, I laughed then went and got my shotgun and racked it, the dog transformed into a puppy instantly. She was a laid back dog when in the house, but never lost her passion to hunt. GPS's are truely a special breed.

I saw the title of this video and my answer was immediately “NEVER”. There are points where my almost 2 yr old GSD is way more calmer than my 9 yr old GSP, but she is still slightly faster than my GSD. To anyone who has never worked with this breed, just think of a more docile-mannered Malinois, but the energy level is the same.

Awesome! I tell mine to coo it! He is calm for a minute then resumes again. Makes me laugh, I tell him he is full of it, a smack talker and a trouble maker, he thinks I am complementing him and continues to be hell on wheels. i have had many of these dogs, and it is normal to me, others might want to consider a different breed if calm and boring is what they want? You can train it out of them, but that only results in a dog with a broken spirit, and that does not fit with a confident hunt dog.

All about time and training, the dog might have been a total pain, but in the end I blame her. It is a cold person that can shoot a dog over frustration. She is a total idiot, who would make it public they shot their dog, she has a poor character. My father had a wiemweiner, that bit the kids, he gave it to a state tropper and it bite his wife when she was feeding it, the tropper came home and shot it. That I understand, the dogs time was up. Overbreeding can cause bad temperment. I have never seen a GPS that was not friendly after meeting someone. they are naturally coutious at first, but warm up quickly.
