    Vizslas really inhabit your heart. So much so that when ours passed we cried everyday for 18 months in mourning.
    We put a $ 500 deposit on a doodle, and a Vizsla breeder called us and said I have one left and he is lonely, we drove 500 miles to pick him up and relinquished our deposit on the doodle.
    It was worth it. Now we are a happy family again, although we still miss the Vizsla that passed.

      I had to have my 13 year old GSP euthanized back in February. I still get teary eyed any time I start talking about her. I miss her so much. I am getting a Vizsla this week. I was looking for another GSP when I found a Vizsla litter. Having had a GSP, I am fully aware of the needs and requirements necessary to own a Vizsla. The two breeds are rather similar in nature and personalities.

    We only adopt senior dogs from the shelter, so we go through that heartache pretty often. The hurt is worth it because it means so much to them. Owning a dog isn't about us, it's about them.

    This is a beautiful video! Thank you for honouring this very old Hungarian breed. Did you know??? The word vizslat means to stare, that is where the vizsla's name come from. It is so old that we don't even use it any more in the modern Hungarian language.

      Vizsla's are the most cat like dogs. Stubborness comes from that, too. 🙂 But they are such a loving and loyal breed.

    • @fullofsorrow5607
      @fullofsorrow5607 2 года назад +34

      Sorry, but you are wrong, very wrong. The Hungarians still use the word "vizslat" as "looking for a well like a hunting dog. And the ancestor vizsla arrived with the Hungarians to Europe more than 1000 years ago, "just arrived" so the breed origin is much older... And all Hungarian animals (dogs too) are all different than anything else, like the Hungarians. Check the cow (szürkemarha), pig (mangalica), sheep (racka) etc. and the dogs: komondor, puli, kuvasz....etc and all breed are very-very old

    • @FreedomIsNotGoingToBeFree
      @FreedomIsNotGoingToBeFree 2 года назад +8

      @@fullofsorrow5607 Hungarian here ;) . Indeed vizslat is a rare but actual verb in Hungarian. Etimologist still can't prove if vizslat verb came from the vizsla noun or the opposite (most thinkg vizsla was first and from it's stare came the vizslat verb).
      You are spot on with the animals.

    • @annaemeralda
      @annaemeralda Год назад +2

      @@fullofsorrow5607 You are stating that Angel Care was wrong when she was very right, we don't use the word vizslat in everyday life, here in Hungary. We learn words like this in school but we never use these old words in modern language. If someone wold use this verb in a sentence most people would think that the person came from a different time and many people don't even know the meaning of this word, it is so outdated.

    Thank you for sharing these amazing videos! I have had Vizslas for 20 years and although I have lived with many breeds and rescues over the years, no breed comes close to Vizslas! I started showing mine in 2013, which is great fun. I live in the Ga mountains where I can take them off leash to run in the hills, the woods and swim in creeks and lakes. They never wander off, and come when I call them. At home, they are always around me or on my lap. This year my beautiful girl had pups and what fun it was for all of us. Their new families send me photos and updates and each one is enjoying their families, young families and retIred families. I currently live with 7 Vizslas, who sleep in the bed, ride in the car and visit friends. What a wonderful life I have!

    This video brought me to tears. I just put my 11 year old Vizsla to sleep last night. He had been battling osteosarcoma silently for some time and he was suffering too much already. He had never even hurt a fly. Everyone who met him absolutely adored him. It makes me angry that he had to pass that way but I know it was the best thing for him. I would love to get another Vizsla in the future when my heart has healed.

    I had a german short hair/beagle mix for 15 years, he was the love of my life, but I know what you say when you talk about extreme hunting instinct. A beagle will run until he drops dead, basically, and this mix was like nothing I ever saw before, and I used to field beagles when I was a teenager.

    I always say they find the home that needs them the most, even when we think, not again, not now, not ready. But there they are, and you instantly feel that bound that said, "this is where we all belong, right here together". When one leaves they take a part of our heart and spirit with them...when the next one comes to you, they give you a piece of their heart. 🧡

    Somehow this one showed up on my feed. Thanks for sharing and great tips on why not to get one. If I my be so blunt myself, I think there’s an opportunity for you to act like a leader more yourself as well.
    The fact that the dog is being picky about the food is also a show of “dominance”. Can I force my owner into submission by giving me what I want. Instead of your dog eating what you give him.
    Also the tugging on the leesh, the looking in your face to demand play and creeping onto your lap. All signs that the dog is trying to establish a slight dominance. You call it affection, I would call it not knowing your place.
    Like you said this dog is a pure hunting breed. Therefore I would play a lot more with extending your experience around hunting excercises. Like following an artificial scent trail, fetching dummies, looking for balls in the rough, etc.

    A viszla is a hunting dog.
    You have to" work" with them. eg mantrailing, track search etc
    Not just running. He needs brain work.
    And he definetly doesn't need a blanket or a coat when outside 🙈

    • @martinmcdonald4207
      @martinmcdonald4207 2 года назад

      I do believe because of their thin coat of nonshedding hair they can actually feel the cold when the weather get`s icy so no harm in a warm wrap if outdoors in such conditions. A New Foundland or Saint Bernard don`t need such thing`s!

    • @daveturnbull7221
      @daveturnbull7221 2 года назад +2

      Looking at the coat he was wearing I think it was more as a safety thing than for warmth. Much like the hi-vis jackets hunters war. He would be at risk from hunters during the hunting season without something like that so I reckon it is good to make sure he is happy wearing one when out in the woods.

    • @sabinereini4633
      @sabinereini4633 2 года назад +2

      I have not owned a Vizla, but I have lived with English Pointers for more than 15 years. Pointers have the same type of coat as the Vizla, and they definitly shed hair! Also, while cold temperatures may not be a problem for the dog while they are active and working, they do tend to get cold after they have cooled down, and they really like to snuggle up in a blanket or in your bed. And they are quite sensitive to getting wet. Also, when they are out hunting, they will run through dense brush without hesitation, and without a thick coat of fur or a blanket they will get nicked by sticks and branches all the time. Being high energy working dogs, they will not stop working just because of getting their skin pierced, so it’s the duty of a responsible owner to protect the dog the best way possible.

    We are now retired and have been married 46 years. Our first dog was a give away Viszla male 2 months old, we were also expecting our first child. He was the best babysitter when I wasn’t looking if our son was growing up, he followed him around the house and was right there for him if he was gonna fall etc. he laid under his crib/bed whenever he slept. We are living with our 6th Viszla and Daisy is only the second female of the breed we’ve had. Velcro dog is the perfect description. All but one of our dogs have been larger of the breed except one and sadly she ran out on the road after a pheasant and was hit. We lived in town until 20 years ago and I potty trained when lived in town and definitely easiest dog to train. Puppies slept with me. I know they say do not do that but it worked for us, I am a light sleeper and I would take the puppies out and walk around the perimeter of our yard with them, if they went off the curb I put them back in yard and our neighbors were amazed our dogs would never leave the yard, they are fast learners. The Viszla we had never chewed a toy up. They would carry them around but had soft mouths therefore good with birds when hunting. A few years ago my husband and son were hunting with our dog and they had one bird left to fill their limit or so they thought, our Viszla ran back to the pickup and sat there and refused to come back to them so they walked back to pickup and gave him water etc and he just refused to leave finally the unloaded their jacket pouches and were blown away they had miss counted and actually had their limit. They were amazed and grateful at the same time. Now that we are in our retirement years we sadly considering not replacing our girl when something happens and along with a Viszla we have always had a black lab and they sort of balance each other. Both our dogs are going on 7 and are with us all day. I loved your video and we have owned 8 acres in country for 18 years, built our home 12 years ago out here and so perfect for animals to exercise. I do agree with you don’t get a Viszla if you don’t have the patience and don’t like the “Velcro” type dog. We have never regretted being given our first Viszla. Sorry this is so long.

One day on the beach we were walking along finding dead sand dollars. She started seeking them out for us. We had to distract her with something else though, she was finding the live ones. lol. We would thank her and quickly put them back.

    Our first dog was a vizsla. I loved him so much, when I was little and I learnt to walk he was always by my side to help me not to fall, he wasn't allowed inside the house, but in summertime I used to sleep in the garden on a blanket and Artur was my pillow. He was my guardian. I have vivid memories of him even though I was very small. We had him for only a few years. In a hunting trip a hunter accidentally shot him.

    It's never the dog, it's the person that owns the dog. I'm a Master trainer, and I've owned six Belgians. I've trained for over 25 years, seen everything! I was the Southeast Regional Coordinator of the American Belgian Malinois Club for eight years, as well. Don't get a GSP either, or any Belgian, either....I've told people there needs to be a class for people wanting a certain breed of dog! You need to know the history of the breed and what they were bred to do, what was their job. Then, are you fit enough to handle a dog every day!! You can't wear out certain breeds, you just build up their stamina!! I have done Conformation, Obedience, Rally Obedience, Agility, Tracking, and Herding with my own dogs.
    The first Vizsla I ever met was a Vizsla named Henry. The owners were stationed in Germany and got him in Hungary. He still had his full tail. He was the sweetest dog I had ever met. Mom and Dad were runners, and took him everywhere, like he was their child. It's a lifetime commitment.

That is where I first really was introduced to the Vizsla. It is amazing to watch him work with them. I love watching the Vizsla's playing in the water and chasing the lure it is awesome to watch what athletes they are. Luke is great at explaining the breed of dogs and what to expect. To many people buy or adopt dogs and don't know what they are getting. Really enjoyed how you explain the importance of doing your research before you get a dog. Pets are not toys or accessories. So important to know this is a lifetime commitment of the pet. Homer you are a beautiful boy.

    A 6-month-old vizsla dog came to my house, it is very wild and does not understand limits, it bites you for any reason. He is like that because they had him alone in a field. I think he was taken from his mom when he was just a baby for cuteness and then left lying around, so he grew up very uneducated and wild. It is a machine that never tires. He always wants to play and if you don't he attacks you, if you do he attacks you, if you ignore him he attacks you, anyway; whatever you do is out of control. And positive training doesn't seem to work, He only learned in "sit down" because I give him food and he lasts for a while like that. It is not like any dog that I had before, I had and have several dogs, breed dogs I have 2 Argentinean dogo and they were always so calm and polite, more so now that they are old, the male dogo he hates the other dog and wants to bite him.

    These are some of the worlds most beautiful dogs. I am not active enough to own one but love seeing them. I have a satiny black Cocker Spaniel. One hour to two hours a day and while she could do more will be settled at that. She is sensitive, bright and cuddled and very very funny. I adore her and admire her beautiful silhouette. When you find the right breed and the right individual in that breed, oh my heart sings for this little girl. Yes Viszla are special but each suits particular people and I love to hear about different people and dog matches. How blessed a gift we are given by our Lord.

    • @homer-homie
      @homer-homie  2 года назад

      Yes. Not in the US. prong collars are also legal. We don't use it for training. Like I said in the video, we do treat based reward. The E Collar is mainly used for safety when we're off leash hiking. They are many wild animals here for Homer to chase. I'm not an expert so if you have recommendations please share. Thanks.

    Good job pointing out that these are hunting dogs, and are going to hunt even if you don’t. Vizslas are versatile hunting dogs, so don’t be surprised when they bring you mice, squirrels, rabbits, birds, etc, and may chase deer as well. And they won’t necessarily be dead, so you may need to kill what they bring you as they’ll be damaged; Vizsla’s don’t have as soft a mouth as Labs or Goldens when retrieving game. And they need lots of exercise, including time off leash. Walking on the leash really doesn’t provide enough exercise, and too many don’t realize this until they get a Vizsla.

    My 1st rescue dog was a Vizsla. She was five months old, she got sick at 13 yrs old. I never had any problems with her. She said with my mother who had a stroke when I went to work. She became her buddy. They were side by side. We moved from Fla to Pa. We had home nurse's come to the house. She would be at my Moms side to watch them. She never got in the way. I never had trouble training her. Or walking her on a leash. She was never put in a create. She never got at anythong. I would get another one in a heartbeat. After my Mom past. I got my 2nd rescue Dakota. She was a 2 yr old Jack Russell and Pug mix. Cheyenne and Dakota where together about a mouth. Cheyenne past. Then when Dakota was 9 we got MOOMOO. He was a friends dog. She could not take when she moved. And we knew that I was going to loose Dakota. Having Moo here gave Dakota about two mouths of life back in her. Now its just me and Moo he is now 7 yrs old sometimes he is a handful. I would not trade my fur babies for anything. Sometimes it's not the breed it's who has them is the problem. I will still have rescue dogs. They need more love than any kind.

    I had to have my 13-year-old German shorthaired pointer euthanized back in early February of this year. My family does not know this yet, but on Tuesday, I am driving for hours to go pick up a Vizsla puppy. I can hardly wait.
    My GSP was liver and white in color. I originally was looking for a black and white GSP puppy because I didn’t want to have a new dog remind me so much of my beloved GSP. I could not believe that I found a Vizsla puppy when I decided to look for a different type of breed like a Vizsla or a Weimaraner. My GSP was a complete and total Velcro dog. I cannot wait to have that experience with my new Vizla Puppy.

    It's not about what they are to learn from you, it's about what they are here to teach you. There are no accidents, no coincidence. They are automatically born in that forgiveness/unconditiional love mode. The highest vibration there is. We, on the other hand, are not well, we are, but circumstance often lead us elsewhere, but it's exactly what we were born here for, to learn. Mind your every action; they are not free and every single one returns. We need to learn to tune in as well. We just get more of whatever we vibe at. It is a choice. There is no one else to blame. Whatever returns we were due, past life or this - karma means actions, and it never forgets. God Bless the dogs, the animals in this world. They suffer so, bc of the actions of some. I found one last Sat. in a crate sitting in the desert sun - no fault of his own. Was maybe 2 months old when sentenced to that death. What a horrid thing it was to do.🙏🐕💫❤💥🌱🌍

    as you know the Va coat is different from other dogs... They are actually a breed that is less common to be allergic to than many others.
    If you get the red rash, you should check your allergies. Do you bath him often? What shampoo do you use? I have so many quotations about that, before you say what you think.
    Because it is less likely that a person isn't allergic or get allergic to a V.
    I get rash from V after playing with other dogs, dirt, pollen etc because it gets stuck on her and I get in contact with it when we Cuddle.
    Easy enough, I don't even need shampoo. Pure water is enough to just rinse through her coat and I have no problem anymore.
    So pls check your allergies if it really is him or not. And if you think about it... a dirty beard can give you a rash to if it's not washed and handled properly...
    Ears... well... corn is not good, they get more brown in the ear and then you have to clean it more. It gets irritated and produces even more..
    A V should not sleep under warm blankets etc that is really not good for their ears. They get over heated under it. And they do have ears that need to be be dried properly after bath, both outside and inside.
    all floppy ears dogs get to warm under a blanket and logically it produced more brown klegg in their ears.
    And almost ALL dogs were made for hunting even if you think of them as "house pets"... I don't get the problem? It is s common family dog in Hungary even in the middle of the city because Vs has a fantastic ability to adapt to their surroundings.
    And Vs are actually often used as guard dogs, sniff dogs service dogs, find dead bodes etc etc etc
    And giving them the needed physical activity is equally important to their mental activity.
    Hide their food so they have fo search for it. Makes them motivated and they eat when they get hungry.
    How would your life bee and your body if you had the exact same boring dry food everyday? Mine has always gotten a combination of dey and wet food. Believe it or not, they eat with their eyes and noes just like us. And yes, I do crazy unnecessary things, like making dog sushi, dog pasta, cake, cookies sometimes. Just because it is fun and see how she reacts when she gets to eat it.
    Oh yeah... and one thing... every dog is different you can teach a dog to adjust to you, even tho I think it goes both days. You just have to find the right method that fits the dog that you have.
    If it only would be one way, theee wouldn't be so many different activities and ways to teach a dog tricks etc
    I don't know... this is somehow the most disappointing video I've ever seen of a V. Even more than the time it was a V in a bad case where the owners needed help and they got it through some TV show
    And don't call it dying get a vizsla when you show where you can adopt in the end
    Really bad choice of name for the video
    Well... you at least have a V! Congrats! 😀

    What a wonderful dog and what wonderful dog owners. This was fantastic. You must know what type of dog meets your personality...So important. My favorite breed has always been a Jack Russell, but I know I could never give him or her what the breed needs. We have a Maltipoo, a mixed breed poodle and we rescued an abused Yorkie (yup) and he's a handful. But he's in his forever home now.

    Ha! I’ll take your Vizsla energy, and raise the stakes with an Australian Cattle Dog (heeler)! They’re a breed that you need to understand before owning too. So much personality and quirks and nippiness. I really want to get a vizsla buddy for my heeler though haha. Love these quirky personalities! So fun, but a lot of work. Very intelligent too though. I’d say the Vizsla is more snuggly than the heeler though, that would be nice. My heeler is a bit more friendly and snuggly than most though.

    We bought a COVID puppy. First dog since last one 5 years ago.
    She’s a Puggle. Pug + Beagle. Weird I know.
    Worst of both breeds. Naughty as. Pick up any smell and runs off.
    Steals things.
    Eats stuff that puts her in veterinary hospital.
    Climbs on tables when you’re not looking and eats your food.
    Wouldn’t trade her for her weight in gold. . .

    Excellent video, I wish all prospective dog owners would look further into the needs of the dog of their choice. We own GSD's and Dobes and other "rescues" as my daughter is a groomer. The best food we have found is K=9 Kravings, Boesl in MD. We've tried others and our dogs have never been sick on K-9 even the tiny poodles. Shipping is a factor as we are located in KY but definitely worth it. Homer is lovely and you both are great owners.
