    This Specimen was quite calm. I didn't see any Hairkicking at all. I think it's a bit of a Problem that the Hobby is a lot faster in Progress then the Science. There are so much Genus' out There who badly need Taxonomy. Sadly there are not a lot of Arachnologist who are doing Taxonomy at Tarantulas. Let's hope for the best. 🤞

      @@TomsBigSpiders I have no fireplace. It is a "modern" home with a furnace that is run on electricity.
      When I can save up and get an alternate source of heat, I will invest in some spiders. I have had times when it was -40 with only candles as heat (not fun) with blankets enclosing a very small space and huddling. It doesn't happen very often but it does happen. Here, we can be stranded for a week after a storm. We even keep emergency kits in our vehicles incase a storm blows through (candles, hats, mitts, blankets, granola).
      I live a ten minute drive from my workplace (a local hospital) and I have been stranded at work for several days at a time because of the weather. The good thing about being stranded at work is that we have a generator that supplies power to the hospital.
      As I said, very extreme temps and living conditions.
      Someday I will have the means to have my first spiders.

    Man, those are gorgeous spiders! And on that subject, is there any theory out there about the colourful nature of tarantulas? I imagine the red under the chelicerae is aposematic coloration but, considering how poor their eyesight is, I doubt the rest of the colors and patterns on the most colorful species are for display, even thought the sexual dismorfism in some species (like Xenesthis sp. or Monocentropus balfouri) may point in that direction. Idk.
    P.S.: The other day Dave from Dave's Little Beasties made a Q&A video and someone asked for a conversation between you and him. I wholeheartedly support the motion. Hello, Santiago! You know, I've been trying to answer that question for years, as in many instances, the colors seem to have little benefit. In fact, you'd think that the bright tones would be a detriment when trying to avoid predators. It's been speculated that yellow bands on Poecilotheria species are also aposematic, which makes sense. I DID read an article in which scientists were trying to say that the bright colors could be to attract mates, but it didn't seem thoroughly researched and doesn't seem to take into account their eyesight. With species like I. mira (with the blue feet), I also wonder if leaving those feet dangling out of a burrow could attract insects and prey items?
      And no kidding? Dave and I got to interact (kind of) when I was on another channel's live stream, which was quite cool. He and I have VERY similar channels and approaches, yet there are some definite differences in our approaches. It's nice to have another RUclipsr who respects the animals and shows that they are not the “aggressive” and “dangerous” monsters some would make them out to be. I’d definitely be interested in doing something with him in the future. A podcast might allow for some great dialog…

    Been wondering what I am doing wrong. I got a small juv (3-4") X intermedia in early April. She didn't come out of burrow until about a month ago - and she huddles by the water dish - never moving (unless I drop food on her - but she goes back to her corner). I do mist the enclosure down in that corner now - doesn't seem to change anything, She is in a 10gallon glass terrarium (I thought she would grow super fast - and I was a little scared of her when I got her). I have not ONCE since April seen her eat anything.

      I should say - she wandered a bit the week she first came out - and she is a voracious hair flicker!

      Sorry, I thought that I addressed this in the video. Their urticating hairs (bristles that they kick off their abdomens by way of defense) can be pretty itchy.

    Alright this is the video that finally convinced me to bite the bullet and spend the money to get into the genus. Which is the must have species? If I'm only going to have 1, which should it be?

      Hello, Nicholas! Hahaha That's awesome! I don't think that you'll be disappointed! It's tough to settle on one because they are quite similar and stunning in their own ways. That said, the X. immanis is a good one to start with as it's usually a bit less expensive!

    I was going to use a 20 gallon tank but I don't think that has cross-ventilation and yeah so I'm looking at buying enclosure for my tarantula then in the beginning I mean it looks like I could just make one out of a tub but personally they make pretty big enclosures for like 80 bucks and I'd rather just go that route it looks a lot better and professional and I'm not trying to have a million different spiders so I get it you're trying to save your money because you have a bunch but I'm just going to have one so I don't have a problem spending a hundred bucks on an enclosure

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  День назад

      You can definitely put your spider into something larger. However, just know that they are ambush predators that usually sit around the mouths of their burrows and wait for food to come to them. They don't generally need or use much extra space. If you do go that large, I would offer it deep substrate, lots of burrow choices at both ends, and lot of plant for cover.

      Hi, Sonny! It's a male. They only turn all purple as males during their final molt (as this one did). He're what he looks like now. ruclips.net/user/shortsiZCAY1FMlSo?si=--Kdr58C7vhg5xQ7

    They're not that expensive I can get a 2.5 inch 3 inch for like less than $300 it's like cheap I'm used to buying like Panther chameleons that are like 600 to $800 and those are cheap for reptiles

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  День назад

      For most folks in the tarantula hobby, $300 for a single sling is pretty expensive. If you find that to be cheap, then you are really going to enjoy the hobby.
