My OBT is one of my favorites in my collection, its name is Tobasco, and mine is not chill at all 😆 He/She is finally a juvie and it is time for a rehouse...I have been putting it off for a few months cause I am nervous LOL!!! All the videos I have watched have scared me, thank you so much for this amazing video, you gave me confidence to rehouse my spicy little spider. MUCH LOVE FRIEND!!! 💕
Wow...hi, Brandi!!! I absolutely LOVE the name!!! I do hope that the rehouse goes well for you. Trust me, I totally get stressing about an upcoming rehouse; I've had some that I kept putting off. This might have been one of them, but it was because I really wanted it to go well so that folks could have more confidence when they rehouse theirs. Please let me know how it goes if you get the chance? Sending good vibes for a totally uneventful rehouse for Tabasco. :) Thank you so much!!!
@@TomsBigSpiders 😍 I am such a huge fan of yours!!!!!!! Thank you so much for your reply!!!!!! Made my month💞 I will be filming it soon!!!! You’re one of the best tarantula channels out there, hope I do you proud 😆🙌🏼 I’ll be sure to give you credit for why I stopped procrastinating 🤣
@@BrandiTV And double WOW...Brandi, I truly appreciate that! My channel is a bit obscure compared to some of the others, so this REALLY means a lot...I'm floored. :) I will keep a lookout for Tabasco's rehouse, and I'm sure that all will go well! Again, thank you so much!!!
Packing for post, rehousing and pairing for years never had any issue with them but every now and then they can bolt. That's not to say they wouldn't become defensive but much is how you handle the disturbance you cause them.
Wow. The difference between your videos and some other channels is astounding. You seem to have so much respect for your spiders, this is the first OBT video i’ve seen where they’re not attacking the brush and stridulating. I’m not a T keeper but the care you put in shows.
Hi, Victoria! That truly means a lot to me. I don't do this for money or entertainment purposes, and that fact often gets lost on those who are not in the hobby. THANK YOU.
You are THE best Tom and let’s not forget the lovely Billie. You do so much to promote good husbandry with all your spiders and it’s fabulous to see your lovely new room. Long May you continue educating.
Its amazing how much confidence I gain from doing my rehousings inside a larger enclosure. The fact that if the spider bolts they are still contained means Im not so terrified of something going wrong. I havent had a bolt since the first time I unboxed my P cambridgei, and its made me realize that some species I had considered to be extreme flight risks are very chill if you go slow and gentle. It helps when your hands arent shaking! Your videos help me visualize how I want my rehousings to go, and my recent ones have been so chill and uneventful. Today I moved a P ornata and it went super smooth! Youre awesome, Tom!
Hey, Natalya! I agree completely. I started doing that years ago, and it always give me more confidence. That said, if you go slow and gentle, you can usually keep the spiders calm as well. And one of the reasons that I do all of the rehousing videos when I do the husbandry notes is because I want people to be able to see a clean rehouse to give them more confidence when they have to move their own. So, thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear that youre P. ornata rehouse went well! :)
I am a newer keeper & have 2 OBT: a sling & a juvie. I actually rehoused the juvie by picking up her webbing with her in it, moved it to a bigger enclosure, and pulled the web open with some feeding tongs to encourage her to move in. Took out the old web as soon as she moved out.. They don't seem any more defensive than my other spiders & are incredibly beautiful.
I've done the trick with moving the webbing before, and it can work well! Yeah, if you give them space, they are usually fine. Glad to hear that the rehouse went well!
I’ve been keeping tarantulas for over a year now, and it’s been a slow process of growing and learning how to work with them properly and safely…and I’m so excited to finally be getting my first two P. Murinus slings today 🖤 Did a re-listen to your podcast ep on them yesterday, and after raising Psalmo’s without issue I feel ready. Thank you for teaching us about these animals in a way that breaks down the stigmas against them.
I got an OBT sling as one of my first Tarantulas, but I did a lot of research and watched RUclips videos for months before I brought any spiders home. My boy, Orange Julius, went from a one-inch sling to mature male in only 6 months. He has had his hooks for over 9 months, and although he has only eaten a few times since he reached maturity, he is still alive. I love him very much and he has been a very good spider. I have only seen him in a threat posture once, and that was because a cricket startled him. As soon as he realized it was dinner, that was the end of the cricket. I am so happy you made this video. OBTs are awesome in every way. I appreciate your calm approach and I try to behave in the same manner (with varying degrees of success.) Thank you for everything you for this hobby.
Love the name Orange Julius! hahaha It's funny how many spiders I've had over the years threat posture crickets! haha So glad to hear that your guy is still doing well. It seems that the males grow much more quickly than the females. Thank you so much!
@@TomsBigSpiders lol. Glad you like the name. Orange Julius was originally named Julia, after actress, Julia Roberts- beautiful, red hair, long legs, bad reputation. The name evolved from there after he got his hooks.
Thank you for saying all this. I was so scared to get one because of their reputation but now I have 3 (all different forms) and all are so chill. I do realize each one can be different but I've giving them alot of space to do their thing. Mine will all run to their burrows/houses when disturbed. I have not got one threat posture ever. I just love this species and I'm so happy I made the leap and got them.
Hello, Cherette! You're most welcome; thank YOU for being open minded and for listening! haha I have two other color forms myself, and so far, I've had zero issues. You just need to give them some room to do their thing. Thanks!!!
Just wanted to give a big thanks. Last year I gave 2 slings a try due to this video and set them up similarly. The juvenile to adult rehouse was the one I dreaded. I did both tonight, and it was so easy. They just clung to their bark and the rehouse was about as easy as it gets. If only my tapi and psalmopoeus could be so easy lol.
Hi Tom, I brought an OBT last week. My first old world. She is around 2.5 inches. I put her straight into a 12x12x12 exo terra. She has a skull hide and lots of anchor points for webbing. She has already webbed her hide quite a lot and has started webbing the rest of the enclosure. She seems happy enough. Like you say doesn't like the light though. I'm sure if you give them plenty of places to retreat, and are aware of their capabilities and respect them there shouldn't be too many issues. Thanks for another great video!! Keep them coming! 🤘
Incredible how calm she was during the rehouse. The technique really has a huge impact on how rehousings go, but with the calmer species you usually don't notice it. Great showcase!
Hey, Tuts! Billie and I were both REALLY hoping that it would go smoothly so that we could show that not all OBT rehousings have to be crazy. Thank you!
I just got a juvenile OBT from a Repticon and it was in a container that had no height and the webbing was attached to the lid. The guy that sold it to me said it would be fine in that for a couple more molts and politely disagreed and explained why I would be rehousing it into a taller enclosure. The house actually went pretty good and the spider didn't threat pose me at all. It's made a beautiful burrow/web tunnels and there is a solid 2 inches between the lid and it's home! I went from no OWs to 3 with this one being my third and I love them to bits. Thank you for your videos. The rehouse technique with the bottles and cardboard gives me the confidence to not be nervous during rehouses.
Hey, Roxy! Sounds like a great call on your part...well done! I'm glad the rehousing went well. You just saved yourself and the spider a lot of stress. :) I'm so glad that this was helpful. :)
thanks for pointing me to C&M terrariums i have been looking for solutions like that for a while but couldnt find anything i tend to destroy the frame when i rip out the mesh just ordered some for the nano & mini, looking forward to their upcoming designs for the bigger ones susan seems to be a really nice person as well thats the kind of business i like to support
My OBT was my first old world, and I just love it! When I rehoused it last, it tried to do a runner, but once it settled in, it's been happily burrowed for months! I get crazy excited when I catch a glimpse of a leg or butt going back into its hidey-hole!
I love your attitude toward these wonderful creatures. Dave's beastie's has the same attitude. Thank you. Gentleness and patient's is required I believe.
I've just rehoused my two OBT juvies. They are now in their forever homes and it all went very smoothly, to my great relief! Just a GBB Juvie and a T. stirmi to house when they arrive in the morning 🙂
I love my OBT. She went from 1/2 inch to almost 3 inches in 8 months. I can't believe how fast she's grown. I wasn't ready. She's outgrown 3 enclosures and needs another rehouse.
Hi, Sam! I have one of the slowest growing OBTs ever. haha I was lucky, as I had gained plenty of experience by the time she needed her first rehousing. Is yours possibly a male? Good luck on the rehouse!
Mine also grew pretty fast compared to my other slings. I started her out in a 16oz and went straight to an adult enclosure. Less rehouse, less stress.
I miss my recently past MM OBT but I got 2 sling replacements since I want to keep an OBT in my collection. Was my first OW. Semi Arboreal, now all I could think of when you said that was GBB. Both OBT and GBB are up there on my fav owned list. Great share as per the norm Tom. Keep being a great treasure to the hobby as you love being!
Excellent video as always. I love the respect you show for the spiders, and I always learn something while watching. I've gained a lot of confidence over the last couple of years watching your vids and using the techniques I see you using.
You're just lucky with OBT. I've seen so many in *immaculate* setups that were just anger made flesh. The speed that these can shoot up a pair of 9+ inch tongs in unreal, a lot of OBT owners refer to their movement as teleporting. Still as calm as yours is, I'm glad you're still urging caution, if you get a wet bite from one of these, you'll never forget it for the rest of your life.
Hello, Steve! Sure, the potential is there, and sure...there are some high strung specimens. However, if you read the comments, it's not just me being lucky. There are MANY other folks who report the same. And I currently have 9 of them and have had no trouble with any of them. They can definitely be a handful, but I think that a lot of the over the top demonization of them is getting ridiculous. Thanks for chiming in!
I’ve just bought one of these a juvenile, love the way you both deal with thing, not over dramatic and shouting in the video, you both are amazing great example how to be calm.
I want an OBT now. I appreciate your neutral standing on these guys. I'm one of the types that was initially intimidated of this species, but this might be a choice of NW once I get confident in my husbandry. Great informative rehousing too and patience you give to your OBT.
I just wanted to present a video that didn't depict them as the scary monsters many make them out to be. Sure, they can be defensive...I'm not disputing that. But, if given room and if handled with respect, they can also be quite manageable. Thanks for chiming in!
I picked up an OBT sling as my first old world tarantula, currently it's around 3/4". I 100% agree with what you are saying about their rep being partly due to the way they are kept or handled. A lot of the bite reports I read were from people handling the spider. Give them a way to feel safe and don't mess with them. When doing any kind of maintenance, always be aware of the spider's location, don't look away (or heaven forbid WALK away) from an open enclosure, and when rehousing have all tools and materials handy before beginning, and do it in a location that doesn't allow the spider to immediately be beyond your reach if it bolts.
Congrats on grabbing one, Brandon...you won't regret it. The OBT is easily one of my top 5 favorite species. Like you said, set up is important when you want to avoid the defensiveness!
Excellent rehouse as always! These are the ones who initially sparked my interest in the hobby and now I have 5 P. murinus slings (2 OBTs, 2 DCF kigomas, and 1 DCF mikumi). One of my kigoma slings wouldn’t cooperate when I unpacked it so I left the vial in the deli cup and it ended up webbing it up and making it it’s den which made it even more complicated. Really looking forward to watching them grow into big beautiful spiders.
@@TomsBigSpiders I’ve been looking for NCF since you mentioned them in your podcast but haven’t seen any available and I haven’t heard of the other one. I’ll have to keep an eye out for those as well
Unfortunately, I know of some tarantula youtubers with pretty prolific followings who rile their OBTs up for views (i won't name names) but I really appreciate this video!! They should be cared for with caution like any old world species, but I really don't think they deserve the bad reputation
Dude you are gifted with these tarantulas. It's a definite connection. This channel is quickly becoming my favorite out of them all. As a noob tarantula keeper these vids are invaluable to me. Thank you and Billie for this.
Hey, August Dog! First off, my apologize for the late reply. Thank you so much! I quite comfortable around them, and I like to think that helps. Thank YOU for watching!
Literally bought my first 2cm sling 2 days ago. Was putting it off for the best part of a year because of the fear mongering videos. Yes it was faster than most of my t's but more than manageable. Just looking forward to that orange to come through now 😀 great content as always Tom!
Thank you! Another brilliant video. 🙂 My husband and I have been thoroughly enjoying your RUclips channel and podcasts. I’ve been wanting to get an OBT and after viewing this my husband said, “why don’t you get one of those, they are beautiful.” ☺️
@@TomsBigSpiders >Hi Tom... im sure they will. Have had some busy times since last we spoke. I think it was back when you got those "chicken spiders" :) Did you ever found out more about them? I mentioned i found some looking pretty much like yours in Brazil and where they lived in communal burrows. But i dont recall seeing any follow up video of you mentioning any new details. But i could easily have missed it. Have been focused on so much else since then.
@@luffebassen Sorry, the system that RUclips has for notifying you when someone replies back is pretty terrible. Yes, that was last we spoke, and I did a rehouse video recently in which I mentioned speaking to you and that I had doubt that they were the true "chicken spider". I was not able to find anymore information on them, and I'm leaning towards them just being some type of P. antinous. I will probably never know. Great to hear from you!
@@TomsBigSpiders Yea tell me about it :D Also all of the censoring is getting out of hand. Often long answers iv done is just getting deleted because i might have used a "bad" word that was normal useing just 5 years ago and then you are waiting for a reply that never comes because your comment got deleted right after ZZzzzz. Anyways... interesting to hear. Iv missed that video of yours. Will try and see if i can find it. I simply dont have time anymore to keep up with every channel im Subscribed to. Are busy trying to invest and prepare for what is coming financially. This crazy fiat printing will come to an end at one point and it will not boat well for people who just have their money in the bank and no stocked supply. Also this virus bs is getting out of hand here in Denmark. We now have a Commie Government that is borderline Tyranical towards people that think for themselves. Love all the terrariums and enclosures in the background. So nice and clean! Also that enclosure look super cool. So many webbing points, this enclosure gonna look soo cool all webbed out!
By far my favorite species. I have 2 P. Murinus. One is very calm even during rehousing. The other one though, just opening the door of the room, she's full on defense mode, threat pose, tapping. Very bolty too. I keep them in an arboreal setup but i added more substrate for them to dig. I overflow their water dish once a month. My enclosures are a bit bigger than the need so i dont have to rehouse them too often. They grow kinda fast . 3/4"sling to 2.5" in a year.. their personnality change with each molt. Love the orange baboon tarantula "obt"
Hey, Paul! They are such awesome spiders. This one was such a slow grower, but I'm raising up some NCFs now that are growing much more quickly. Thanks for chiming in!
Keep up the work! I just recently got a handfull of dcfs after looking for 9 months can't wait to see them grow.... My obt has not webbed much but she has a very intricate tunnel system in her substrate
thanks for sharing that! my obt was defensive AF when i got her but it was like you said the enclosure was just too small for her. since she is in a larger one shes an angel! if i have to do some cleaning up or refill the waterdish she just goes back in her cave and gets out as soon as i am done.
Hello, M.K.! I'm glad to hear that you experienced the same thing. I've spoken to quite a few people who have them and have given them plenty of room, and they are just fine. Thanks for chiming in!
This species has just moved from the list of 'Ts I want' to the list of 'Ts I need' . I loved the idea of using the cardboard to make the area you wanted her to go darker.
I do an OBT care video, less than 24 hours later so do you. I watch it just to check that mine is set up correctly 😂. Only thing I did different was provide a deep burrow and substrate. Great video Tom
As soon as I'm done responding to comments, I'll go check yours out! I tried to mention many times in the video that you should also give them room to dig. I didn't give this one as much substrate because she has never really don't much digging.
@@TomsBigSpiders if you get around to watching my video it will make my day sir! Honestly your advice and level headed approach to stuff got me into inverts
very beautiful. I love OBT's and miss mine very much. But like you Tom i kept mine like you do and never had any trouble out of her. Love those tops will for sure be checking into those. thanks Tom.
Hey, Tim! I IMMEDIATELY thought of you when I was putting this together. Again, so sorry to hear that. And I'm loving the tops. They cost some money, but they are just so convenient and they fit better than the originals. I'll be picking up more for sure. Hope all is well, bud!
What a great video! I try never to use the word "aggressive" because I don't believe that tarantulas are. Defensive, yes some of them. It's really nice to see a video showing patience ending in a good rehouse unlike many other channels. She is a stunning girl by the way!
Hiya, Toni! I never use the word "aggressive" either. I hate when it's used to describe scared spiders that are trying to defend themselves. Thank you so much!
i have 10 old worlds i honestly give them all the same respect i usually have pretty calm re-housing's when i get a threat posture i will set the cup in the encloser and set the lid on if i can and come back in a min or two and very calmly coax them in usually works pretty well for me i feel really guilty when i stress them out too so i try and have the most chill rehousing i can even if it takes a half hour. thank you tom your videos are so great i did a ton of ow rehousing the other night while binge watching your videos lol Tom Moran is the Mr.Miyagi of chill rehousing's !
I treat all of my new world and old world species the same way as well. Some people don't get it, but I'd rather always be practicing good technique. Haha Thank you so much, Alison!
Tom thanks for the positive demo on an appropiate rehouse . Your point was well taken on giving them a little more verticle space and not tearing the top off thier "house" everytime we open the enclosure. Also wanted to say thanks. your Videos Do inspire , After re-watching your feeding video VII from Sept. of last year and a few others I picked up a couple Phormictopus Auratus slings from a local show this past week end. I'm pretty stoked. These are great looking Ts Cheers, D.
Oh, and I will be getting one of this next month or so along with a Lasiodora parahybana. This will complete my collection of 10 tarantulas! After that I will have to see what ones end up as males so I can have more room when I send them off for breeding.
Mine is as docile as a new born puppy at this point in time. Got my first threat posture at about 1/4" , and has been a sweetheart since it hit 1" . Got it about 1 year ago and it is now 3" .
Hi again Tom, thank you for this video, it gave me confidence to rehouse my obt too, I bought her as mature already she's a female and my first old world...I'm not so confident of rehousing her coz she didn't grew up in my care so I'm not so sure about her temperament but one time I made a mistake feeding her and she did a threat pose, but I knew it was my mistake but after that mistake, never happen again...and seems she's alright so long as I did it correctly.. But rehousing was only a dream for me coz I'm scared that she bolt and I can't catch her but after I have watched your video, it made me feel like I wanna do it...thanks always for all your helpful videos specially for most of the newbies, like myself, I only been 2 months and already have 12 Ts mostly Mexican genus, chaco and 2x obt, one is sling about half an inch... Thank you again and more power for you and more videos to come, can you make another video for your obt after she settled in her new home 😊
Hello, Melchor! I'm SO glad that this video helped to take away some of the stress that you were feeling. That means a lot, as it's the whole reason that I do videos like these. I hope that the rehousing goes smoothly for you! And I definitely will. :)
Great rehousing and nice enclosure! This reminds me that i have to rehouse one of my Pterinochilus kigoma females. Ohh dear! She wont be happy, she gets quite easy irritated! I have noticed that P murinus kigoma grows much slower than other colormorphs of P murinus i have kept. The OBT have grown pretty quick in general, and i have had a bunch over the years. Very strange indeed! Yes, if given deep sub and lots of hidingplaces and debries, and a little taller cage their should be no problems with eigher attitudes or "ripping off their home" Sure, they are general defenssive but in such a cage they rather retreats. Another tip i can give with this speicies is to keep them in "frontopend" terrariums and place most of the substrate and decore back in the terrarium, because uf the tarantula is a especially heavy webbing creature, it doesnt matter if it weebs part of its home onto the "roof" of the tank, cos u open it in the front. The drawback is that it is harder to work in a front open enclosure. But your terrarium is nice cos you can open it from the top too
Hey, bud! Man, this OBT was one of my slower growing tarantulas. It took quite a while for her to even hit 2". The NCFs I'm raising are growing much more quickly, though. And great idea about the front opening. This enclosure has both front and top and plenty of depth, so hopefully I'll be all set with her. Thanks again!
I learned the majority of my rehousing techniques from watching Tom's videos, the only thing I do different is the use of long plastic zip ties to coax tarantulas in and out of catch cups. They flex very easily and can be used to pressure the tarantula without poking at it. Also, P murinus is one of my favorite species, and one of the most misunderstood in the hobby.
Love this! I've been watching so many OBT videos and there are more demonizing them than appreciating them. The videos of people purposely teasing their T's are sad. But absolutely love your take and notes on the species
Hi Tom! I noted if not in this video but maybe a few earlier, that you were moaning about the lack of Crystal clear containers. Check out your local Wally World and look for the new Rubbermaid containers called Brilliant. They lock solid on the sides and it's not too bad with height to ground to width ratios, especially with slings, juveniles, and sub-adults. It's a thick plastic but I have used both a drill or a soddering gun to make holes for how I want the ventilation to be. They also stack well. Other sizes are also available through Amazon. I like the fact that they are extremely sturdy and Crystal clear they almost look like glass. I don't know it you knew about them but thought I'd mention them to you about them. Also, thank you for recommending Steve with Arachnoiden. I bought two T's from him and he was extremely helpful with my order. Considering the time he and I spent emailing back and forth was actually funny since his website was just upgraded and I was having difficulty ordering. I'd find something that didn't work, he'd find out what wasn't working on his end, get it fixed then I'd find another problem. Two day later between him and me it finally worked! He was a great guy to work with and my two new T's will be on their way to me and arrive on Thursday the 18th. Any whoo, I hope you check out those containers and like them. They are around $8 a piece on average. Again thanks for the reference to Steve.
Hi, Linda! I honestly don't mind the milky ones as well, but every time I post a video featuring one, someone comes on and complains about it. I try to head that off! haha And I will absolutely check those out. Thank you for the heads up! And I'm so glad that you had a good experience with Steve. I've ordered from him a couple of times, and it went great both times. Thanks so much!
Just got my first T, now I want 100! I was looking for a jumper to begin with but in winter in NY a local breeder had a curly juvenile for sale. I am HOOKED! I can't wait to graduate to old world but know enough to go slow. Definitely want to do it right!
That's awesome! Yeah, this hobby is SUPER addictive. I remember telling my wife that I would probably have a couple dozen some day (I now have over 200). Welcome to the hobby!
That's awesome! Yeah, just give them some room. You can also reduce rehousings by putting a juvenile in the adult enclosure (with lots of cover and web anchors).
From the C. Darlingi to this OBT, he gets to keep all the calm ones and we get the devil incarnates. Tom, you're missing out on all the suspense feeding and rehousing sessions we get to enjoy! LOL! Kidding aside, I admire how you really get to calmly work with them while getting little to none of their feisty attitude.
As usual another educational and professional video. As far as T's you're my go to! I don't have an OBT or an H. mac (my fav) as yet, mainly because of the reputation, however, now I have a couple of pokies, I'm finding like you have said, if the T isn't stressed it's more likely to be compliant. 🤞🏻Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 😊
Hi, Gina! Thank you so much! Yeah, the pokies are other spiders that get a bum rap because of the potential for issues. Drives me nuts. I have two H. macs as well, and they've been quite well behaved.
I have a few OBTs and all the hype has me psyched out more so than my pokies. Your videos and podcasts definitely calm me down a bit lol. I'll say tho... the largest one I have is definitely my boltiest T. Everytime we rehouse, it ends up on the floor running around like a mad woman 😂 1x 4" OBT 2x 2" RCF 2x 1" DCF Kigoma 1x .75" DCF Mikumi NP
Both of my OBT (grown on sling and juvie) have a set up which allows them to bury or web. Stunning spiders, both skittish rather than aggressive. I always treat them with the greatest respect and until now never had any trouble 🤷♀️
Great video Tom, great rehouse and a beautiful species. I have a p. murinus and it's true for what you said Tom if you treat them right you have a happier spider.
Just this last Monday I got my very first T's (3) (after waiting for about 3 years ) All good beginner spiders, not an OBT, but who knows,, maybe in the future! I really like your videos and have watched a lot of them. Thank you for the excellent content.
Hi, Alice! It was the same with me. When I was first researching them, all I found was the disaster videos. Sadly, there are still folks out there who do this stuff, and it really irritates me. Dear God, Jungle Bob...what a dingus. hahaha
That was a smooth rehouse. I have had anout 3 people say they wa t to get rid of their OBTs, and i get the feeling that no one that says that ever means it cause i will always answer 'if you are sure i will take her off your hands' and then never see them again.as much as people demonize them im pretty sure the ones that keep them actually treasure these amazing arachnids.
Excellent video! Thank you for some proper information on the famous OBT and tips on rehousing them. OBT'S have some bad reputation, but I think they are a beautiful species.
I’m new to the hobby but I really appreciate your content and all your videos. Not ready for old worlds yet but my GBB, A seemani and A chalcodes are really amazing and fun to keep. I ordered the keeper cards so I’m fully an arachnerd! Lol. Thanks and keep up the great vids!
Hello, Philip! Thank you so much! And I totally understand; there is never any rush. And, for some people, the risk isn't worth it. And that's awesome on the Keeper Cards! Mine RUclips "Legends" cards should be coming very soon! haha
I got bitten by a OBT once, it's no worse than a bee sting. Just kidding, got out of bed 30 min ago and this was my morning coffee video. You are the best tube our hobby has, great move and beautiful handling, calm, secure and stress free. Beautiful OBT. Love from Denmark 🤘
Brilliant video Tom. I was thinking of getting one soon. I was thinking with your blowing technique maybe if using a straw whilst doing it as u could direct air to certain place. Awesome stuff .
Nice rehouse! I love my OBT, she's actually fairly chilled out. They get unnecessary bad press, from my experience. Like you say, I think its largely the set up that dictates their behaviour 👌🏼
Great video, I'm glad to hear you say, the T is scared and defensive, I have seen quite a few people saying aggressive, it's so detrimental to new keepers, as you said....house them correctly and they are, I won't say no trouble but, manageable. Never had more than legs up with mine, I feel it's a very misunderstood T but also very underrated, it's a very beautiful and striking T.
Hi, Sean...thank you so much! I'm hoping that people watch that part of the video because I think it's important to keep that in mind. They are NOT evil; they feel threatened.
Hey brother! Great video man you were right on point. They do get a bad wrap & they are demonized. Thus turning folks off to them. I, like you, when I started in the hobby saw those videos and said I would never own one. Fast forward 2 years. I got one as a freebie and wasn't sure what to expect. Turns out it is quite docile like yours. Hardly ever a threat posture or bolt. Just a lot of standing their ground. That one is now nearly 3 inches and I rehoused it recently with much negative anticipation but little to no resistance. I was shocked! They are also very beautiful but unfortunately I never see mine. I also just got a sling as a freebie. Fingers crossed I have a pair! Thanks for sharing that information with the rest of us. I know I learned something and that's ultimately the goal. Right? Take care bud!
Hey, bud! It drives me absolutely nuts, especially when I talk to folks who keep a bunch of old world species that say, "but I'll never keep an OBT." There are certainly more defensive ones out there, but if kept correctly, that shouldn't be an issue. And I'm hearing from more and more folks that they have shy or docile ones, which is a huge step forward from back in the day where everyone bragged about how "demonic" theirs were. Fingers crossed that you get a pair! I just bought another sling, and I'm hoping for a male myself! Thanks again, and take care!
I've just had to learn rather quickly from your video as I've very recently just been gifted an OBT as a suprise gift. I've only been in the hobby about 2 months with my lasiodora parahybana who thankfully seems to have an unusually calm nature before I was gifted the OBT. My dad said to me "you know how you keep snakes and spiders and all those creepy things? well I got you another one" and then produces this glass enclosure covered with web. I go to take a look and see this bright orange abdomen sticking out of a burrow and I almost froze as I knew exactly what it was but apparently my dad didn't and somehow the pet shop let him buy it without even checking if he knows the dangers old worlds can be. Seems to have been chosen on the principle of orange one looks the coolest so I'll buy that one. Thanks to your video I'm no longer terrified of when I eventually have to re house it, just regular scared instead. At least that's an improvement I guess.
Ha! That's so awesome! Yeah, most of the people in the pet stores have no idea about tarantulas. I've seen OBTs offered with signs that say, "Great pet!" and "Docile" which could lead to folks trying to handle them. I just posted a video last week where I rehoused 4 of them to show that they aren't that bad. Congrats on getting one!
My OBT was my second tarantula because I apparently like challenges 😂 Mine is actually really chill and has never given me a threat pose. I have her in a tupperware container with about 7 inches of substrate and she's chosen to dig deep and just web up inside it. I only see her out occasionally and that's just her front half. Definitely going to be getting her an enclosure like this one soon so hopefully I'll see her more often.
These are my absolute favorite. Just recieved two .25 inch slings. Which means, I've now owned nine of these guys. My attempt with two H. maculata slings in 2012, of the same size, failed and its stuck in my mind like a sliver. So, I'm checking pulses thrice a day. But, I'm far more experienced with the murinus. Confident it's just jitters. D.M.
Got a small sling 2 days ago and was wondering if u have a caresheet online, so I call this perfect timing. Hopefully mine stays as calm as yours in the video. Cheers, stay healthy
I was thinking of finally adding one of these to the collection, was going to set it up more fossorial, with 6 inches of substrate, a hide and some anchor points in a 5 gallon RUB.
Absolutely love P. murinus, I currently have 5 OBTS and i think they are a must have for any serious collection! I'm wanting to collect every color variant
Me too, Ben! I have another RCF on the way (I want to raise up another) and I also have 4 NCFs and a Tete Moz. I want to try to collect all of the variants as well!
Great video and I agree as my adult female obt I raised from a sling and you can see me rehouse her without cupping I just let her walk from enclosure to enclosure
I bought some of them myself...and I will be buying more. haha I love them, but I know that some folks won't want to spend the money. :) I'm glad that you checked them out, Jerry!
Bigger is better! Got my AF in a Theraphosha sized enclosure and she's a dream. Still a bit defensive of her hides but the ease of maintenance from the excess space is great. I always recommend it to people when I can for this species.
Your videos as well as Dave over at Dave's Little Beasties has completely changed my perspective on OBTs and keeping them. Obviously healthy respect is still required for them as a species, but that's just as true for Pokies and I may have to reconsider adding an OBT to my collection at some point.
Great video Tom! I don't think this species deserves the extreme reputation they've gotten! Mine never charges out at me or any such nonsense. I've never even gotten a threat pose from it either as of yet. Anyhow, great video, thanks for trying to help educate! Great work!
Great video Tom. It's nice to see a video on the OBT where they're not made out to be psychos, or messed about with until they start threat posing or striking. Still won't be getting 1 until im a lot more experienced tho lol
You are so much more chill with OBTs now than when you first had one. Recall you being a tad perturbed when it charged out after you breathed on the web. 😬🤞🏼
Hi, Lawrence! I've always been chill with these guys; I have an earlier rehousing with this one that went just as well. In that video, I was trying to call myself out for being too concerned with filming and not being respectful of the spider. I thought it was a great example that no matter how docile the spider may be, you still have to be careful. I actually used that video at the end to show their speed. :)
Thank you so much for this awesome video. I was just trying to decide if I should get this species. I wasn't particularly afraid of them but still wanted to make sure that this species is right for me. But now I feel like I could make an informed decision and pick up a sling at the expo this weekend. Thank you! 🕷️
Hello, and so sorry for the late reply! I think that, if kept correctly, they are no different than any other old world species. I currently have 7, and if given the room, they would rather bolt to their burrows. I think that the reputation came from folks keeping them incorrectly. I'm glad that this was helpful!
Tom! I heard you love phormictopus so I got a cancerides about a month ago! Great eater, super fast pre-molt, but DAMN I have never seen a T move so fast. I rehoused mine recently and whenever it spots me taking a peak it bolts for it’s hide faster than I can even blink it’s insane!! Deff adds a unique personality to my collection I love it. Great vid been dying for obt update. I have a gbb as well & I always hear people say they’re a great bridge species to old worlds but I feel like the phormictopus is really good T before getting into old worlds. My phormictopus is a little less predictable than my gbb
Hi, Sky! I sure do! That's absolutely awesome. Yeah, the slings are super fast and are really capable of some impressive takedowns. haha They DO usually calm down once they put on some size. Phormictopus can definitely be a great stepping stone to the more feisty species. My GBBs both went through a crazy phase, so those work too. haha Thanks again!
Fancy seeing you here, Brandi! 👀 Love you!
@@kaitlynmarie1785 😭🙌🏼 LOVE YOU RIGHT BACK MY AMAZING FRIEND!!!! Isn’t this the best channel?
@@BrandiTV And double WOW...Brandi, I truly appreciate that! My channel is a bit obscure compared to some of the others, so this REALLY means a lot...I'm floored. :) I will keep a lookout for Tabasco's rehouse, and I'm sure that all will go well! Again, thank you so much!!!
Finally a proper OBT rehousing without any of the fear mongering. I've been looking forward to this video since listening to your podcast.
YES! thank you
Thanks, Jason! That's EXACTLY what we were going for. :)
This ^
Packing for post, rehousing and pairing for years never had any issue with them but every now and then they can bolt.
Awwwww...thank you, Bobbi! I just try to present the facts. And thanks so much! I'm LOVING the new room.
Hi, Amy! Congrats on your new P. murinus; I'm sure that you'll love them! And I'm sure that you'll do just fine. :)
Thanks!!!
@@TomsBigSpiders exactly. I want people to not be afraid cautious. I wish I didn't wait so long for my first lol.
That's so awesome! I'm so glad that it went well. And maybe they will be! 😁
Congrats on getting your first, Lee. The setups sounds great, so I don't anticipate that you will have any issues with her. :) Thanks!
thanks for pointing me to C&M terrariums

That's awesome! Yeah, she is super nice, and this was a great idea. These are just so convenient!
My OBT was my first old world, and I just love it! When I rehoused it last, it tried to do a runner, but once it settled in, it's been happily burrowed for months! I get crazy excited when I catch a glimpse of a leg or butt going back into its hidey-hole!
Hi, Bobbi! Yeah, I think that quite a few people have shy ones like ours. :) I haven't seen this girl since I rehoused her.
I love your attitude toward these wonderful creatures. Dave's beastie's has the same attitude. Thank you. Gentleness and patient's is required I believe.
Thank you so much, Dovine!
I've just rehoused my two OBT juvies. They are now in their forever homes and it all went very smoothly, to my great relief! Just a GBB Juvie and a T. stirmi to house when they arrive in the morning 🙂
Hello, Simon! I'm so glad to hear that it went well...that's great! Good luck on the other rehousings!
Awwww...sorry to hear about your male. :( And I set mine up exactly the same...they are very similar in that way. Thank you so much!!!
Excellent video as always. I love the respect you show for the spiders, and I always learn something while watching. I've gained a lot of confidence over the last couple of years watching your vids and using the techniques I see you using.
Thank you so much, Luke! I really appreciate that. I'm so glad that you find this stuff helpful!
Well to be fair, I would not put tongs close to an obt.
Great video Tom! Your OBT is so gorgeous! Thanks for the feature on our Mini lid :)
Thank YOU so much. Those covers are amazing!
I’ve just bought one of these a juvenile, love the way you both deal with thing, not over dramatic and shouting in the video, you both are amazing great example how to be calm.
Thank you so much, Martin! Yeah, we pride ourselves on calm rehousings here. :)
Hello, James! Thanks so much, bud. I still need to get the Kigoma and the mikumi (I have NCF and Tete). Can't wait to grow them up. :)
You don't say, Summer? ;) I know exactly what you're talking about, and it really irritates me. :( Thank you so much for getting it! :)
I'm glad I do not have any problem rehousing my Ts. Seems like other people have way more trouble than I do. It's really simple and straightforward.
Hey, John! I've never had any issues myself. You stay calm and keep the spider calm and they're easy. :)
Hello, Ben! Wow, I had some pretty good timing then. :) Congrats on getting one!
Thank you! Another brilliant video. 🙂 My husband and I have been thoroughly enjoying your RUclips channel and podcasts. I’ve been wanting to get an OBT and after viewing this my husband said, “why don’t you get one of those, they are beautiful.” ☺️

Hahaha Thanks!
Hello! Thank you so much! My big girl never did too much burrowing, but the slings I have now are quite the burrowers. :)
thanks for sharing that!
my obt was defensive AF when i got her but it was like you said the enclosure was just too small for her. since she is in a larger one shes an angel! if i have to do some cleaning up or refill the waterdish she just goes back in her cave and gets out as soon as i am done.
Hello, M.K.! I'm glad to hear that you experienced the same thing. I've spoken to quite a few people who have them and have given them plenty of room, and they are just fine. Thanks for chiming in!
Awesome patience on that rehouse Tom
Thanks so much, bud! Didn't want to spook her. :)
This species has just moved from the list of 'Ts I want' to the list of 'Ts I need' . I loved the idea of using the cardboard to make the area you wanted her to go darker.
That's awesome, Haze! :)

I might have to pick one of those lids! Thank you for showing it off, I have an extra exo terra laying around and I was nervous using it for a T
I'm loving them myself. A heck of a lot easier than retrofitting the ones that come with it! Thanks!
i have 10 old worlds i honestly give them all the same respect i usually have pretty calm re-housing's when i get a threat posture i will set the cup in the encloser and set the lid on if i can and come back in a min or two and very calmly coax them in usually works pretty well for me i feel really guilty when i stress them out too so i try and have the most chill rehousing i can even if it takes a half hour. thank you tom your videos are so great i did a ton of ow rehousing the other night while binge watching your videos lol Tom Moran is the Mr.Miyagi of chill rehousing's !

These are great looking Ts
Cheers,
D.
Hello! Thank you so much for the kind words. And that is awesome that you picked up a couple P. auratus. Congrats! They are STUNNING as adults. :)
Thank you for the podcast and this video!!! Loved the podcast at work. The long ones really make my day!
Oh, and I will be getting one of this next month or so along with a Lasiodora parahybana. This will complete my collection of 10 tarantulas! After that I will have to see what ones end up as males so I can have more room when I send them off for breeding.
Hey, Dusty! Thanks so much! Every once in a while I bust one of the long ones out. haha And congrats on your L. parahybana! :)
Mine is as docile as a new born puppy at this point in time. Got my first threat posture at about 1/4" , and has been a sweetheart since it hit 1" . Got it about 1 year ago and it is now 3" .
Hey, Joe! Awwww...nothing cuter than a tiny sling threat posturing! :)
You're so smooth when you rehouse. I can say that I learned from the best
Why thank you, Tina! We try to keep things chill. :)
Stunning ....can't have enough of this species in our collection !
I agree completely!
Always great info Tom, thanks. Always left encouraged and confident for my new coming species.
Thanks so much! That's always what I'm going for.
I have just purchased my first DCF OBT, and was given 2 OBT slings. Will definitely use your advice.
That's awesome, Chris!
Stunning! Definitely one I am going to get at some point :)
Looking forward to seeing the webbing your girl will do in her new enclosure!
Thanks so much! They are such gorgeous spiders. She's already been doing some webbing, so it shouldn't be long!
Thanks so much for the very kind words, Michael! And that's a great tip!
Love this! I've been watching so many OBT videos and there are more demonizing them than appreciating them. The videos of people purposely teasing their T's are sad. But absolutely love your take and notes on the species
Hi, Stacey! That stuff drives me NUTS. They are not that bad if you're respectful and set them up correctly. Thank you!
You may have just convinced me to get a OBT thinking about how the housing has an affect on the behavior
That's awesome! Yeah, just give them some room. You can also reduce rehousings by putting a juvenile in the adult enclosure (with lots of cover and web anchors).
Incredibly informative video, I was wary of purchasing an OBT, but now... I'm thinking that may be my next T. Thanks Tom awesome as always.
Thanks so much, Matthew! I'm glad that I was able to strip away some of the fear. :)
Hahahaha I just totally luck out, Justin! I really am missing out, aren't I? lol
I absolutely love your videos Tom! I always get excited when I get a notification that you posted a new video. Keep up the great work☺️☺️
Thank you so very much, Arachno Queen!! :)
I have a few OBTs and all the hype has me psyched out more so than my pokies. Your videos and podcasts definitely calm me down a bit lol. I'll say tho... the largest one I have is definitely my boltiest T. Everytime we rehouse, it ends up on the floor running around like a mad woman 😂
1x 4" OBT
2x 2" RCF
2x 1" DCF Kigoma
1x .75" DCF Mikumi NP
Hey, Cory! Sounds like you have quite the spitfire there! haha And that's a great collection of them! I only have the NCF and Tete Moz.
Both of my OBT (grown on sling and juvie) have a set up which allows them to bury or web. Stunning spiders, both skittish rather than aggressive. I always treat them with the greatest respect and until now never had any trouble 🤷♀️
Hello, Kaz! Yeah, I find them to be skittish or shy if you give them enough room. And you hit the nail on the head...it's about respect. Thank you!
Great video Tom, great rehouse and a beautiful species. I have a p. murinus and it's true for what you said Tom if you treat them right you have a happier spider.
Hello, George! Thank you so much, bud! Glad to hear yours is happy as well. :)
Just this last Monday I got my very first T's (3) (after waiting for about 3 years ) All good beginner spiders, not an OBT, but who knows,, maybe in the future! I really like your videos and have watched a lot of them. Thank you for the excellent content.
Hello, Cattrix999! That's awesome...congrats and welcome to the hobby! And thank you for the very kind words!
Great video and very informative as always! Keep up all the great work you do for the hobby my friend!👍
Hello! Thank you so much!
When I first started looking for tarantula videos on RUclips all I could find were OBT disaster unboxings, and the Jungle Bob video
Hi, Alice! It was the same with me. When I was first researching them, all I found was the disaster videos. Sadly, there are still folks out there who do this stuff, and it really irritates me. Dear God, Jungle Bob...what a dingus. hahaha
I have 9 of them they're absolutely beautiful and great to have and all them love to burrow
Hey, Tim! I'm up to 7 of them now. I LOVE the P. murinus!
Thank you so much! Hahahaha That's a very good point!
Excellent video! Thank you for some proper information on the famous OBT and tips on rehousing them. OBT'S have some bad reputation, but I think they are a beautiful species.
Hi, Andy! Thanks so much! The can certainly be defensive, but I DO think that much of their reputation is overblown.
HAHAHAHAHA You had me there for a minute! I'm drinking my morning coffee as I type this (I can't function without it!). Thanks so much!
Brilliant video Tom. I was thinking of getting one soon. I was thinking with your blowing technique maybe if using a straw whilst doing it as u could direct air to certain place. Awesome stuff .
Hey, Joffy! Thank you so much. Yup, that would definitely work!
Nice rehouse! I love my OBT, she's actually fairly chilled out. They get unnecessary bad press, from my experience. Like you say, I think its largely the set up that dictates their behaviour 👌🏼
Hi, Jay! I agree completely. Not to say there aren't defensive ones out there, but the setup and the keeper can really make all of the difference.
This girl was actually really chill, too. I have 6 others, and they aren't bad at all.
D.M.
Sorry to hear about your H. macs. These guys are really durable, so I'm sure that you'll be fine.
Got a small sling 2 days ago and was wondering if u have a caresheet online, so I call this perfect timing. Hopefully mine stays as calm as yours in the video. Cheers, stay healthy
I have two now! haha Congrats on your sling! I just bought another as well. :)
I was thinking of finally adding one of these to the collection, was going to set it up more fossorial, with 6 inches of substrate, a hide and some anchor points in a 5 gallon RUB.
Definitely give it room to dig. This one has always been a webber, so I didn't give it super deep sub, but many will burrow.
Hey, Gav! That's fantastic! I love examples of them not being little demons.
Pretty T, but that Exo Terra top is awesome+. C&M sending you one was a great idea because I just ordered.
Great point! Giving them a bit of extra room works for most defensive species. Thanks!!!
Your videos as well as Dave over at Dave's Little Beasties has completely changed my perspective on OBTs and keeping them. Obviously healthy respect is still required for them as a species, but that's just as true for Pokies and I may have to reconsider adding an OBT to my collection at some point.
Yeah, they are definitely NOT the monsters that people make them out to be. I've been trying to convince folks of that for years. :)
Great video Tom! I don't think this species deserves the extreme reputation they've gotten! Mine never charges out at me or any such nonsense. I've never even gotten a threat pose from it either as of yet. Anyhow, great video, thanks for trying to help educate! Great work!
Thank you, Russell! Yeah, I think that people just like to make more of it than there is.
Great video Tom. It's nice to see a video on the OBT where they're not made out to be psychos, or messed about with until they start threat posing or striking.
Still won't be getting 1 until im a lot more experienced tho lol
🤦
Hi, Helen! Thanks so much! That was our whole goal with this video. :) And I TOTALLY understand!
I'd like to see this setup after she settles in . I've wanted one of these for a while . Thanks Tom !
Hey, Dan! I will definitely do an update once she gets to webbing. Thank YOU!
P murinus is one of my favorite Ts. if not my favorite
I love them as well, Jason!
@@TomsBigSpiders Heck yeah.
