Love the video..one of my favorite species! I am a huge fan of the exoterra talls...nano and smalls. I use them a lot and have had a lot of luck buying them second hand off craigslist and facebook for pennies on the dollar. Just got to put in some elbow grease to clean and sanitize the heck out of used enclosures.
I'm definitely falling back in love with them. hahaha. I've picked up several and am in the process of rehousing my arboreals into them. They just look so dang nice. I'll have to check Craigslist! Thanks!
My absolute favorite arboreal tarantula! I think at this point I have convinced at least 3 people to get one. Shame about yours being so shy though, maybe it will become more visible with size. From what I've seen it's pretty much a 50:50 chance if you get one that you basically never see or one that's regularly visible, and pretty much nothing inbetween. Either people say "I haven't seen mine in a year" or "I can't understand the people that never see them, mine is out all the time".
That is so good to hear! We just purchased a sling yesterday and based on what we've read so far, we have felt very lucky to be able to see it out of its tunnel/burrow already! Hopefully that means we get one of those who likes to hang out some :3
I have P. irminia. It seems if u give them natural envirement with hideouts you see them more. I have P. reduncus and P. irminia mine are visible half of fime and I got like many fake plant hidout and everything. When they feel safe in full enclosure u ill see them often.
Last few years I raised 3 slings, all turned out to be males. Turned into a greyish fluffy T haha. Raising my 4th now, let's hope for a female! Great vid Tom!

Good day Tom, as a fellow metal head and tarantula enthusiast getting back into the hobby after many years, your work has been a great help with species I had not raised before. It has also helped with catching up with what's been happening in the hobby overall since I kept 10 years ago. My female Irminia was the last tarantula that I cared for, it was brutal to let her go. Now, a decade later, let the collection begin.
I enjoy your videos Tom. My dad and I just recently got into the hobby and we're learning a lot. We frequently visit the Fear Not Tarantulas store and we catch some of your videos on the TV during our visit. Currently have an A. Seemanni (my first T) and a C. Cyaneopubescens sling (I've named Genie), and although I'm not experienced enough for the P. Irminia at the moment, I hope to one day add one to my collection. Keep those videos coming because they're very informative.

I already have 2 slings of this species and recently purchased a STUNNING adult female ( ( named her Lillith ) and rehoused her with little incident even though she got out of the catch cup I used. I kept calm and just directed her gently to the open door of the new enclosure and she went right in. WHEW !! I must really be getting the hang of this !! I LOVE THIS SPECIES !!!!!!
Ah, how cool is that idea of taping the cardboard to the catch cup! Gonna keep that one for myself! Lovely tarantula (my two both moulted recently after nearly a month webbed up) and as always such a wealth of information. Thanks Tom!

I agree this was my first species of T and it was a rough learning curve, more than a couple close calls. Never fully got out of the hobby ( have kept my brachypelma albopilosum and cyripopagopus schioedti while moving and going to school). But now that I am in my own house your channel and a couple other great channels have caused me to jump back in with both feet so thank you!

Against my bf advice I got my irminia. Just rehoused my 2 incher in a cheese ball container with wood and foliage. Made lots of ventilation holes around the top with a fork heated on the stove. I'm a DIY kinda girl. I just love her(?) so much. She actually went into the new enclosure really easy and decided to burrow a little bit and web started already.
That was amazing. It looks like she was trained to jump up into the cup. You are incredibly lucky or just incredibly good at T handling and husbandry. Moving is always chancy. But you make it look easy.

Tom Moran yeah I was just huhing over you saying that in the video. I'll get a sling, been loving watching my only sling, an OBT, grow. Plan on buying myself a P. rufilata or ornata in June for my birthday so I won't have a huge amount of time to get used to the irmania but hey the girl is ok with it so who am I to argue with her?
Loved this video especially the transport method for rehousing. I'll definitely copy this for next time! This was my first species. It was a steep learning curve but fortunately I got HER as a sling which gave me time to learn. She's beautiful and I love the green/blue iridescent colours under her legs. BUT She can move like lightning and can be super grumpy. I believe if a responsible adult does research and picks up some nifty tips like in this video, then sure its doable, even if you're a bit of a novice. And if you are a beginner then get a sling - give yourself time to learn.....also beware of handling, no urticating hairs means nasty venom, which also means you can get bit with only one prior warning!! Dont go thinking she's throwing you a peace sign or a high five......
Definitely not a beginner species. I have also seen some pretty gnarly bite reports associated with these beauties. No urticating hairs with this genus though. I think they are the most visually appealing tarantula out there. Just to bad they are so shy.

Hahaha. Loved when you grabbed the P reduncus. That was classy and so glad you didn’t cut it out I put together a nano tall bioactive for the A Avicularia. Going to be a while before I revoke into it. Wanted to get it up and plants and springtails going in it. I did get the replacement top as well but a bit worried about the cross ventilation without the mesh.
Ha! I forgot about that! Almost grabbed the wrong spider. Yeah, with that species, I would be REALLY careful that it doesn't get too stuffy. You'll want to drill a lot of holes in the top to make sure that you get that proper airflow. Good luck!

@@TomsBigSpiders For sure, the rehousing was so simple and nowhere near as stressful! Phew. I'm actually about to pick up an O. Violaceopes, reckon this would work well for one of those too? I know that they're arboreal but not to the same extent as some others so I'm unsure if it would have the same reaction to bolt up into the cup. I guess there's one way to find out lol

I've been looking in to these enclosures recently for future reference. I just got a P. cambridgei from Tanya at Fear Not Tarantulas and I was looking in to these for when it matures. Also I wanted to touch on what you pointed out about the foam background. When I got my A. urticans (my first T) I had no knowledge of what size enclosure to keep it in. I put it in a bigger Exo Terra than the nano tall. I ran in to the issue of her going behind the backgrounds as well. Thanks for posting Tom. I always enjoy learning from your videos
Cool informative video! I recently got a nano tall exo terra for my feather leg baboon as you can see on my channel. I removed the foam backing as well. BTW you can get more of those plastic containers from uline! I ordered a few recently! Great video again!
Nice video Tom . I have two small P. irminia and had to redo a housing on one of them. They are only 1 1/2" but I respect them and use precautions when I transfer them.

Just bought one of these today, about 3cm at the moment... I don't like the tub she was in at the pet shop as it was a terrestrial set up so i am going to get her into a new house. Having kept some terrestrials and other inverts, I’m looking to get one of these as a transitional species to OWs. Looks fast and skittish, but not quite as punishing if I make a mistake. And the orange on black is just amazing! As always, love how in-depth your video is!

Wow, thanks, James! Oh, man...there are just so many that we need more of. Acanthoscurria geniculata used to be everywhere, but we can't import them anymore. I would LOVE to see more bred. Any Phormictopus species would also be nice. Man...I don't know where to begin! haha

I found that use an icepick under the rubber rim they glue over the screen, pulls it all out if you work it around the edge. I found I don't like to use silicone to put the new plastic in though. 3M commercial grade double sided sticky tape on the side of the plexiglass that doesn't face inside the terrarium, then hot glue over the small void on the inside rim. Glue the cable guides at the back closed. The trimming idea you had was great for the back piece, changed my mind and now I am using them too. Just picked up one of these spiders (my #6 in the budding collection) after watching this video, about 1.5 inches. So far the mod for the Exo seems to work on all the sizes from 18x18x18 down. Using Lexan .093in thick for the 12inches or smaller units fills the gap perfect. 1/4inch thick for the 18 inch units. Bought my Lexan at Lowes, but I see you can get it for half that cost off Amazon. Thanks again for all the ideas!
I'll have to try that, Gery. I've had better luck lately getting the gaskets out; it all depends on their quality control. Sometimes, they have very little of the glue, which makes it easier. Great stuff...thanks again for chiming in!
I wanted to get one, but I am a beginner and i suppose if you wonder if you are ready or not the answer is you're not the breeder also have an extensive list of warning's. Sorry for the delay, Werner! Honestly, the only time you should experience issues is during rehousings. And, with this species, you might even be able to go from a sling enclosure to an adult enclosure. And, there are always precautions you can take to avoid the potential for escape. Thanks so much!!!
Wonderful vid as always. I will absolutely attest to that irminia/pokies sentiment! Mine was a handful while I had her, the only T that actually beat my eye and "teleported". Super ornery, readily threw up threat posture. The pokies just scurry away, typically lol the comparisons to h.mac seem more accurate 😅
Yes! Billie and I were talking about the fact that if you took away the potent venom, Pokies would generally be the spiders you'd use to get ready for Psalmos and Tappis. haha
My first 2 enclosures were Exo Terra ones and had some bad experiences with them. As you said tom my Avic Avic was dangling on one leg from the top of one of those enclosures and luckily i could still save him. My other enclosure housed my A. Seemanni and he as well was dangling from atop the wire mesh. Since then i only buy custom build glass enclosures but replacing the wire mesh with plexiglass is a nice option to atleast fix those exo terra enclosures of mine that are now just gathering dust in my closet.
I'm so glad that people are coming forward with their examples about the screen tops. Every time I mention this, a bunch of folks say that I'm being an alarmist about the. I'm sorry to hear about your issues with them, but I'm glad that your spiders are okay. Those glass enclosures must be gorgeous. Thanks for chiming in!!!
Thanks for the reply Tom. my glass enclosures do look pretty good and they are made with a thicker kind of glass. Not the 4mm glass you see a lot around here. Unfortunately they dont have crossventilation which leaves the substrate kind of moist. Is this a bad thing? Since I get a lot of mixed answers about it ranging from it kills the spider in the long run or it is harmless.
Tom....Im a snake guy. The last 4 months Ive been watching all your videos,Richards,Deadly T girl. I will eventually buy a T. I,like you, love the orange mixed with the black. This Venezuelan Suntiger is just unreal. Well Im a huge Philadelphia Flyers fan too,a crazed hockey nut. If these guys hide like this,how do you feed them? How do you know they ate? Also,I am in the food business,Ive seen several spideys on YT using plastic squirt bottles to fill water bowls. Not a good idea.....unless the plastic is PBA free or the bottle goes in the frig. If that spray bottle is full of water for any length of time and the temp goes over 65 degrees, the toxins in the plastic come out. Matter of fact,this is for everyone, bottled water can be deadly if at ANY time if is left in a truck,in the trucks outer bed,in a garage,or even in an entrance to a drug store without air conditioning. Do your due diligence on this all.....if you are feeling achiness in all your joints like flu but wont go away,nauseau,headaches,you could have PBA poisoning. The symptoms mimic lyme disease. If not identified in time,your organs,liver and kidneys shut down. The effects on a T,well, thats obvious. Tom,Im not saying you,but others are using spray bottled,thought Id use my food knowledge to point it out.

I haven't tried this size Exo-Terras since I don't own any medium sized arboreals, but I do use the "Mini-Tall" for my P. Ornata and it is a great. The 12x12x18 size of that one is a great size for the large arboreals and looks fantastic on the shelf. They are pretty pricey though at about $75 on Amazon.
Great video Tom as always, one of my top 10 species, I bred my girl last year and can vouch for their temperament especially when I had to take her babies off her!
Absolutely stunning T! I have a sling I got in March from Tanya and absolutely love it❤️ it has molted once already and is showing those beautiful stripes on its bum❤️ So far no threat poses but is lightening fast! My A. Brockelhursti shows more threat poses than any other T in my collection! Lol

when I found this video I just got my 3/4 of a inch now is a big 3 1/2 inch confirm female, there are so interesting my like to go out on the morning and chill in the cork for some time and there are pretty active favorite species for sure.
I love my P. Irminia. I have a fiesty girl. She knows when it is feeding time and usually comes to the opening as soon as she feels me opening her enclosure. I am going to look into this enclosure for her. The reason why is that P. Irminia do not need cross ventilation and I know keepers that keep them with zero ventilation their whole lives. As long as you are feeding and misting at least once a week. They have more than enough air to stay alive for weeks. This ensures good humidity in the enclosure and their molts will always be pristine every time. Also I don't use a water dish as most of the hydration she gets comes from her prey and when I mist weekly I can catch her drinking the drops off the glass occasionally. As far as the irminia goes I prefer them over standard avics.
When you talk about cross ventilation, it's not about them getting air; it's about getting fresh air. They don't need that much air for respiration, but they DO need fresh air. Dank, fetid enclosures can kill spiders just as quickly as dry ones. As for water dishes, that's certainly your choice. I've caught mine drinking many times (just got a photo of her the other day drinking). Personally, that tells me that she wants more water than what she's getting from prey or misting. Again, I don't argue the point, but for me, I want them to have access to water at all times. Plus, I can't tell you how many RUclips videos I've seen with keepers finding their spiders dead of "mystery" ailments, and it's obviously a dehydrated spider that didn't have access to water. I, too, prefer Psalmopoeus to avics (I hope no one sees this! haha). Thanks!
i have 4 of them and the first one i got is a really laid back and calm one but the other 3 are a nightmare! they try to escape all the time. just last saturday one bolted out and jumped off the table. since she/he is still rather tiny nothing happened to her bc of the fall. all i did was to open her enclosure just a littoe bit to drop in a cricket. 🙈😅 but it was rather interesting to witness the jump. she spread her legs like a parachute so i guess thats why they have so many hairs shaped like feathers. nature is awesome!
Just ordered my first P. irmania -- a 2 inch female. My only other Ts are a G. pulchra and a C. elegans. It looks like I'm in for a ride with this one...
Hi Tom, first of all your videos are making it far and wide and making a massive difference. I have a bit of a rare question on this species/genus my one is showing the obvious signs of pre molt batting the food away webbing up around her but she doesn’t necessarily have what I would class as a large abdomen. Does this species necessarily need to have a large abdomen to be in pre molt or do they have a smaller sized abdomen thanks for your help 👍
Thank you so much, Charles! And great question! The arboreals usually don't get anywhere near as fat as terrestrials, so it can be a bit more difficult to tell when they are in premolt. They tend to look much thinner when they molt. Hope that helps!
Mine was in a cork bark tube in her original enclosure. I stuffed tissue in the top of it and then just moved the tube into the new enclosure. Was a bit anxious, but figured she would try to stay hidden.
I get the whole cross ventilation thing and I'm with you on that. Just a suggestion, have you considered drilling holes in the glass? I've drilled holes in glass with a Dremel tool. Your not actually drilling, more like cutting or grinding holes. Just use patience and it works very well.
@4:22 you can also make your own with Styrofoam and then you glue/silicone the substrate to the back and make a background. Petko from Dark Den does this.
Did this to my lids January 2017 after a thread on Arachnoboards. Did a video but I just silconed perspex over the mesh. Only took a few minutes for each. Won't post my video as it's cheeky.

Cyaneopubescens sling (I've named Genie), and although I'm not experienced enough for the P. Irminia at the moment, I hope to one day add one to my collection. I already have 2 slings of this species and recently purchased a STUNNING adult female ( ( named her Lillith ) and rehoused her with little incident even though she got out of the catch cup I used. I kept calm and just directed her gently to the open door of the new enclosure and she went right in. WHEW !! I must really be getting the hang of this !! I LOVE THIS SPECIES !!!!!!

I agree this was my first species of T and it was a rough learning curve, more than a couple close calls. Never fully got out of the hobby ( have kept my brachypelma albopilosum and cyripopagopus schioedti while moving and going to school). But now that I am in my own house your channel and a couple other great channels have caused me to jump back in with both feet so thank you!

Against my bf advice I got my irminia. Just rehoused my 2 incher in a cheese ball container with wood and foliage. Made lots of ventilation holes around the top with a fork heated on the stove. I'm a DIY kinda girl. I just love her(?) so much. She actually went into the new enclosure really easy and decided to burrow a little bit and web started already.

Plan on buying myself a P. rufilata or ornata in June for my birthday so I won't have a huge amount of time to get used to the irmania but hey the girl is ok with it so who am I to argue with her?
Loved this video especially the transport method for rehousing. I'll definitely copy this for next time! This was my first species. It was a steep learning curve but fortunately I got HER as a sling which gave me time to learn. She's beautiful and I love the green/blue iridescent colours under her legs. BUT She can move like lightning and can be super grumpy. I believe if a responsible adult does research and picks up some nifty tips like in this video, then sure its doable, even if you're a bit of a novice. And if you are a beginner then get a sling - give yourself time to learn.....also beware of handling, no urticating hairs means nasty venom, which also means you can get bit with only one prior warning!! Dont go thinking she's throwing you a peace sign or a high five......

Definitely not a beginner species. I have also seen some pretty gnarly bite reports associated with these beauties. No urticating hairs with this genus though. I think they are the most visually appealing tarantula out there. Just to bad they are so shy.

I put together a nano tall bioactive for the A Avicularia. Going to be a while before I revoke into it. Wanted to get it up and plants and springtails going in it. I did get the replacement top as well but a bit worried about the cross ventilation without the mesh.

Yeah, with that species, I would be REALLY careful that it doesn't get too stuffy. You'll want to drill a lot of holes in the top to make sure that you get that proper airflow. Good luck!

I've been looking in to these enclosures recently for future reference. I just got a P. cambridgei from Tanya at Fear Not Tarantulas and I was looking in to these for when it matures. Also I wanted to touch on what you pointed out about the foam background. When I got my A. urticans (my first T) I had no knowledge of what size enclosure to keep it in. I put it in a bigger Exo Terra than the nano tall. I ran in to the issue of her going behind the backgrounds as well. Thanks for posting Tom. I always enjoy learning from your videos

Tom Moran about a 3/4 inch sling. Very cool coloration even as slings. Really looking forward to raising one
I found that use an icepick under the rubber rim they glue over the screen, pulls it all out if you work it around the edge. I found I don't like to use silicone to put the new plastic in though. 3M commercial grade double sided sticky tape on the side of the plexiglass that doesn't face inside the terrarium, then hot glue over the small void on the inside rim. Glue the cable guides at the back closed. The trimming idea you had was great for the back piece, changed my mind and now I am using them too. Just picked up one of these spiders (my #6 in the budding collection) after watching this video, about 1.5 inches. So far the mod for the Exo seems to work on all the sizes from 18x18x18 down. Using Lexan .093in thick for the 12inches or smaller units fills the gap perfect. 1/4inch thick for the 18 inch units. Bought my Lexan at Lowes, but I see you can get it for half that cost off Amazon. Thanks again for all the ideas!
I'll have to try that, Gery. I've had better luck lately getting the gaskets out; it all depends on their quality control. Sometimes, they have very little of the glue, which makes it easier. Great stuff...thanks again for chiming in!

Sorry for the delay, Werner! Honestly, the only time you should experience issues is during rehousings. And, with this species, you might even be able to go from a sling enclosure to an adult enclosure. And, there are always precautions you can take to avoid the potential for escape. Thanks so much!!!
Wonderful vid as always. I will absolutely attest to that irminia/pokies sentiment! Mine was a handful while I had her, the only T that actually beat my eye and "teleported". Super ornery, readily threw up threat posture. The pokies just scurry away, typically lol the comparisons to h.mac seem more accurate 😅
Yes! Billie and I were talking about the fact that if you took away the potent venom, Pokies would generally be the spiders you'd use to get ready for Psalmos and Tappis. haha

My first 2 enclosures were Exo Terra ones and had some bad experiences with them. As you said tom my Avic Avic was dangling on one leg from the top of one of those enclosures and luckily i could still save him. My other enclosure housed my A. Seemanni and he as well was dangling from atop the wire mesh. Since then i only buy custom build glass enclosures but replacing the wire mesh with plexiglass is a nice option to atleast fix those exo terra enclosures of mine that are now just gathering dust in my closet.
I'm so glad that people are coming forward with their examples about the screen tops. Every time I mention this, a bunch of folks say that I'm being an alarmist about the. I'm sorry to hear about your issues with them, but I'm glad that your spiders are okay. Those glass enclosures must be gorgeous. Thanks for chiming in!!!
Thanks for the reply Tom. my glass enclosures do look pretty good and they are made with a thicker kind of glass. Not the 4mm glass you see a lot around here. Unfortunately they dont have crossventilation which leaves the substrate kind of moist. Is this a bad thing? Since I get a lot of mixed answers about it ranging from it kills the spider in the long run or it is harmless.

Not a good idea.....unless the plastic is
PBA free or the bottle goes in the frig.
If that spray bottle is full of water for any length of time and the temp goes over 65 degrees, the toxins in the plastic come out.
Matter of fact,this is for everyone, bottled water can be deadly if at ANY time if is left in a truck,in the trucks outer bed,in a garage,or even in an entrance to a drug store without air conditioning.
Do your due diligence on this all.....if you are feeling achiness in all your joints like flu but wont go away,nauseau,headaches,you could have PBA poisoning.
The symptoms mimic lyme disease.
If not identified in time,your organs,liver and kidneys shut down.
The effects on a T,well, thats obvious.
Tom,Im not saying you,but others are using spray bottled,thought Id use my food knowledge to point it out.

I haven't tried this size Exo-Terras since I don't own any medium sized arboreals, but I do use the "Mini-Tall" for my P. Ornata and it is a great. The 12x12x18 size of that one is a great size for the large arboreals and looks fantastic on the shelf. They are pretty pricey though at about $75 on Amazon.

Absolutely stunning T! I have a sling I got in March from Tanya and absolutely love it❤️ it has molted once already and is showing those beautiful stripes on its bum❤️ So far no threat poses but is lightening fast! My A. Brockelhursti shows more threat poses than any other T in my collection! Lol

I love my P. Irminia. I have a fiesty girl. She knows when it is feeding time and usually comes to the opening as soon as she feels me opening her enclosure. I am going to look into this enclosure for her. The reason why is that P. Irminia do not need cross ventilation and I know keepers that keep them with zero ventilation their whole lives. As long as you are feeding and misting at least once a week. They have more than enough air to stay alive for weeks. This ensures good humidity in the enclosure and their molts will always be pristine every time. Also I don't use a water dish as most of the hydration she gets comes from her prey and when I mist weekly I can catch her drinking the drops off the glass occasionally. As far as the irminia goes I prefer them over standard avics.
When you talk about cross ventilation, it's not about them getting air; it's about getting fresh air. They don't need that much air for respiration, but they DO need fresh air. Dank, fetid enclosures can kill spiders just as quickly as dry ones. As for water dishes, that's certainly your choice. I've caught mine drinking many times (just got a photo of her the other day drinking). Personally, that tells me that she wants more water than what she's getting from prey or misting. Again, I don't argue the point, but for me, I want them to have access to water at all times. Plus, I can't tell you how many RUclips videos I've seen with keepers finding their spiders dead of "mystery" ailments, and it's obviously a dehydrated spider that didn't have access to water. I, too, prefer Psalmopoeus to avics (I hope no one sees this! haha). Thanks!

i have 4 of them and the first one i got is a really laid back and calm one but the other 3 are a nightmare! they try to escape all the time. just last saturday one bolted out and jumped off the table. since she/he is still rather tiny nothing happened to her bc of the fall. all i did was to open her enclosure just a littoe bit to drop in a cricket. 🙈😅
but it was rather interesting to witness the jump. she spread her legs like a parachute so i guess thats why they have so many hairs shaped like feathers. nature is awesome!

Hi Tom, first of all your videos are making it far and wide and making a massive difference. I have a bit of a rare question on this species/genus my one is showing the obvious signs of pre molt batting the food away webbing up around her but she doesn’t necessarily have what I would class as a large abdomen. Does this species necessarily need to have a large abdomen to be in pre molt or do they have a smaller sized abdomen thanks for your help 👍
Thank you so much, Charles! And great question! The arboreals usually don't get anywhere near as fat as terrestrials, so it can be a bit more difficult to tell when they are in premolt. They tend to look much thinner when they molt. Hope that helps!

Mine was in a cork bark tube in her original enclosure. I stuffed tissue in the top of it and then just moved the tube into the new enclosure. Was a bit anxious, but figured she would try to stay hidden.

I get the whole cross ventilation thing and I'm with you on that. Just a suggestion, have you considered drilling holes in the glass? I've drilled holes in glass with a Dremel tool. Your not actually drilling, more like cutting or grinding holes. Just use patience and it works very well.

@4:22 you can also make your own with Styrofoam and then you glue/silicone the substrate to the back and make a background. Petko from Dark Den does this.

Did this to my lids January 2017 after a thread on Arachnoboards. Did a video but I just silconed perspex over the mesh. Only took a few minutes for each. Won't post my video as it's cheeky.
