    A truly amazing looking specie! I follow some journalists based here in the Philippines who makes articles about tarantulas and it seems like every 3 months or so new species are "discovered" quotations since the study is not that in-depth, I would love if more professionals study these new species and eventually introduce them to the hobby. Dont feel scared to pick a OW the main thing is that they move faster and a bite is more painfull but there are exceptions like H. gigas. Less speed, less dangerous bite :).
      You ill love them after u feel more confident in handling their care. The main difference for me is their speed and some are just likely to defend themself by biting but it isnt something to be afraid for.

    • @svenkaan6864

    Hi Tom! First off, loooooove your channel its so great seeing how to have a busy home life whilst safely caring for tarantulas i have learned so much from your channel!
    I am new to tarantulas and currently have a very bolty Chaco sling and a juvie curly who is such a character! I ordered a jumping spider and was sent a free sling... one of these orange beauties Orphnaecus philippinus. It is fast fiesty and i must say i love its spirit. I have researched alot and of course watched your vids on the species and i know they are quite a T and after seeing the speed of this sling i get why beginners are advised to wait awhile and may shy away from them. I however want to do the very best by it. Its here and as quick and attitudy as it is im already quite attached to the little guy. It came on bone dry substrate so i added alot of moisture and it ran straight onto it and has now dug a burrow which i assume means its happier now? My main question in regards to this species is rehousing. Its in a small sling cup atm but how much of a bigger enclosure is it safe to rehouse to after it has moulted. With my small experience and its rapid fire speed i would prefer to limit the number of rehouses if possible to avoid stress for us both as i gain in experience. I too have a busy home with other pets and want to keep ecerybody safe. Would really appreciate any advice on rehousing this species.
    Many thanks for taking the time to read my long post and please keep making the videos they are really educational and interesting to watch :-) . Thank you!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +2

      Hello, Zoe!
      You should find that your O. philippinus will be quite shy overall. The only time the speed should come into play is during rehousings. If you give them room to dig, they would much rather bolt to their burrows and hide. Good call adding the moisture..this species needs it! About what size is it right now? What size is the cup? Let me know, and I'll tell you what I think.

    • @zoedavis3165
      @zoedavis3165 4 года назад

      @@TomsBigSpiders thank you for your reply. Its small atm about 3/4 of an inch diagonal leg span. It dose sometimes bolt in its little burrow but likes to spread out on the moist substrate and do the ocassional zooms around the container. Its in a 2inch x 2inch x 3inch tall tub id say max with a good 2 inches of substrate. Its not afraid to take down prey thats the same size as it (dropped in a small cricket and was about to take it out to prekill as i realised it was nearly same size as the sling but in the blink of an eye it was on it and had already bitten into it and wrestled it away! If it spooks into its burrow its not long before its back out seeing what im up to lol. Seems very inquisitive so far and is very entertaining. Just lightning fast! Thanks again.

    Hi, Tom! I’m your new subscriber! I’m from the Philippines and I’m glad that O. Philippinus is one of your all time favorites. Have you ever heard of the “Palawan Blue”? If I remembered correctly, it was discovered and described last 2016. Just to share, I just purchased this Palawan Blue and will receive her in the next few days. So excited.
    Also, there’s a tarantula that just got discovered this late 2019; and is still being researched by experts. For now, it was named “bloody red tarantula” and was found in the Northern parts of Luzon.

      Hi, Ben! Oh no! Well, back in the day, I used a kerosene heater. We had one of the cylindrical ones, and I placed it just outside the doorway to the spider room (I was worried about the fumes) and that worked well to take the chill off. After that incident, we got rigged up so that I can use a generator.
      The kerosene heaters can be a bit pricey, but they're a good alternative for folks that can do generators. www.homedepot.com/p/DuraHeat-Portable-Convection-Kerosene-Heater-Provides-23-800-Btu-s-of-Warmth-DH2304S/304697729

    Hey Tom, been an on and off watcher for a few years now. I have had some interest in picking up my first T at some point. But I have arachnophobia. One thing that’s really holding me back at the moment is, how would you rehouse T’s when you are frightened of them? I don’t think I’d be able to directly touch them with my hands.
    Also how do you deal with T’s that bolt? As this would be a nightmarish scenario for someone like me with arachnophobia.
    Thanks for any advice in advance! Keep up the great work!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +1

      Man, I replied to this yesterday, and it's not here! UGH!
      I, too, used to be arachnophobic. I bought my first (still have her!) in the '90s in part to get over my fear. The trick is to start with a larger, calm specimen. My girl would literally just sit in one spot for days at a time. When you have to do maintenance, you can just carefully put a clear plastic cup over your spider to keep her from getting startled and bolting. To rehouse, you would used the same method. Simply place a clear plastic cup over the spider, slide a piece of cardboard beneath her, then move her over to the new enclosure. I don't know if you've seen any of my rehousing videos, but I use this technique for all of mine. You should NEVER have to touch one with your hands.
      I hope that helps!
      Tom
