    Missed opportunity creating a common name for the Pseudohapolopus sp Blue... "Blue Booty Sapphire" 😜

      Bahahaha. No joke, I made up a common name for a species years ago (the fire hiney), and I just assumed that everyone would know I was trying to be funny. Nope. People started emailing me about getting a "fire hiney" tarantula! I felt terrible! hahaha

  • @TomsBigSpiders

    First, it is Dolichothele diamantinensis. When I edited the video, I used old clips labeled with the old genus and apparently had a major brainfart. My apologies for any confusion.
    Unfortunately, I could not include every single blue tarantula or tarantula with blue on it that I could think of. Some others to check out would be Orphnaecus sp. blue Panay, Chilobrachys discolus blue, Idiothele mira, Birupes simoroxigorum, Typhochlaena seladonia, Xenesthis sp blue, Harpactira pulchripes, and P hormictopus sp. blue "Azul." My thought was that I could always do a part two down the road.
    As with any spider, do your research before you pick one up!

      @@abibarclay5419 That was one that I originally had on the list (it's one of my all-time favorite species), but I took it off near the end. Part of it was because males aren't blue at all, and the older females tend to loose the blue as they turn more of a cool gray. That said, I was already second guessing that decision while this was uploading. haha

    For beginners, I would recommend to check out the Pterinopelma sazimai. 1) New world tarantula - no strong venom compared to old world tarantulas. 2) She's a calmer one, maybe she will flee, but for my T, she's rarely showing threat poses or kicking hairs. 3) No complex husbandry, tolerates some beginner mistakes 4) Stunning blue colors 5) Good~medium display, you can see her often outside her hide 6) Medium growth rate (faster than most Brachypelma or Grammostola)

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +4

      Hi, Samuel! Sounds like you have a sweetheart! I've had three, and mine were quite skittish, with the juveniles kicking hairs and bolting around their enclosures and my young adults being VERY defensive and slapping and threat posing at the slightest disturbance. That's why I try to give people a heads up. Thanks for chiming in!

    Loved it Tom. Loved the choices. I've been seriously looking at Pseudhapalopus sp. Blue and sp. columbia. They're so gorgeous. Didn't like hearing about how small and slow growing they are. I've been waiting for what feels like ages for my H. chilensis to grow. :)

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +3

      Thank you so much, Alex...that REALLY means a lot. Right before posting this, I told Billie that I expected to get skewered by people who were upset that I didn't include certain species. As for the Psuedhapalopus, I love them, but they DO start super tiny. The sp. colombia actually hurt my eyes when I try to find them. haha. That said, my sp. blues are finally decent sized, and I think it was well worth the wait. And it's funny because I was going to pick of H. chilensis slings a couple years ago, and didn't because of how small and slow growing they are. haha I'm kicking myself now, though.

    • @SuperLoops
      @SuperLoops 4 года назад +1

      H chilensis can be sooo slow to grow but mine responded really well to being kept warmer I got it last year in July as a tiny 1cm spiderlet and it moulted in August but then didnt moult again all through Sep, Oct and Nov and for those months it hardly ate and I convinced myself that it was going to die 😢 but at the end of November I got a little cabinet w/ glass doors that I put a heater in and I keep it at 28-29°C for small spiders and ones that room temp is too cool for, and since its lived in there my H chilensis moulted in December, January, February and at the start of this month, 4 moults in the time it didnt do any Aug-Dec last year 😲
      So yep Alex if you can keep your new Tarantula Room nice and warm I think your H chilensis will like it and other spiders too ofc 😷

    I feel like you should have added the "beginner friendly" species first then added the more challenging ones after. I am a fan of blue spiders, and also orange ones. I have a few of the "Baboon" species including the "Blue Footed Baboon" (I.Mira). It is a fossorial so some people don't seem as enthused about them, but I adore mine. I got a confirmed female and seeing her blue feet sticking out of the hole on occasion makes me very happy. I do want to get an m. Balfouri communal as a goal later on.
    I did purchase a P.metallica sling and it has been my most reclusive of the bunch. It sometimes makes me worry if it is even "alive in there" as it did not eat for a while after getting it and even seemed scared of some prey items. I ended up giving it a couple "pin head" sized crickets for it to eat.

I'm listing scientific names, common names, nw, ow, terrestrial, arboreal or fossorial, beginner friendly, not for beginners and side notes like fast, shy, heavy webber, defensive...
    So you see... this list is PERFECT!
    I too am enamored with the blue one's, often pointing them out to ppl who think I'm crazy for wanting a spider as a pet! A lot of non spider lovers don't even know any come in these gorgeous colors! Like...how could anyone not love them or be awed by any animal adorned with colors like these??? I really, REALLY wanted Brazilian jewels until I learned how elusive they are. And hard to keep alive. I may still get some one day but for now I definitely want something I'm going to see kinda often. It's already driving me INSANE that I'm not seeing my juvie curly! I really wouldn't want more hiders right now, especially ridiculously expensive one's! But I really enjoy your content and your format. 🤗

    yay some of my favourite spiders on this list 💕 i love my P sazimai and D diamantinensis
    Im a bit confused w/ my Chilobrachys dyscolus tho. its common name is Vietnam Blue so you would think theyre blue but mine is a biggish juvie and isnt blue at all yet, and I found out that theyre also called Burmese Brown....so hmm idk if there are two localities/colour forms of the species or what. its a nice spider anyway I honestly dont mind if it doesnt turn blue 😷

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад

      Hello, Super Loops! I think that there are both a brown and blue version of the C. dyscolus (which is why some are labelled "sp. blue" or "Vietnam blue." I think that the brown ones were called "Asian Smoky" or something like that. That said, I had the C. dyscolus blue, and the blue didn't start showing up until it hit about 4" or so, and even then, it had to be under the right light for you to see it. Please let me know if yours starts showing the blue!

    When I look at the Singapore blue I just see it as the arboreal cobalt blue. They both have much the same color and marking scheme to a tee as well as ill temperament, venom and humidity requirements. Only different builds. I don’t know about everyone, but the first time I watched this, I totally forgot about the Amazon Sapphire tarantula (which is rare), Sabah blue, and the South Mindanao tree tiger.

    Imo I don't believe ANY ow's are beginner friendly. I waited for over a year b4 I purchased my first and I'm glad I did. Mine have never really given me huge problems but they are extremely fast and I would even dare say a little more unpredictable than most nw. Coupled with those issues and their potent venom one should do some serious thinking along with research b4 even purchasing. I would say a couple of mine are sweethearts while one of the very same species can sometimes make me sweat when dealing with it, lol. I love all though. Great video Tom!!! Tyfs God bless you

    There is another blue Old World that might make for an intermediate keeper's pick and that is the Phlogiellus Johnreylazoi AKA Palawan Blue, they are a smallish species that gets to 4-5 inches and is extremely bolty, but makes for one great display tarantula once they get big enough as they tend to stay out more often

    Hey tom, i would like to ask, is it okay to actually keep the C. Lividus with not much substrate and let them make web rather than digging holes? To be honest i dont really mind it's defensive personality since im used to these kinds of spiders. But im wondering if they could thrive even with like a terrestrial enclosure set up? Thanks in advance

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 года назад

      I don't encourage that at all. The reason why it would be more defensive is because it is essentially feeling threatened due to not being able to dig and hide. That's not fair for the spider.

    Tom buddy just one sentence in this has me wondering what are the green tarantulas I need some lol also could you do a video on the ban tarantulas like the pokies ,seladonia, birupes explaining what's going on so everyone can get this important knowledge

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +2

      Hahahahaha. I'm obsessed with the green ones, and I'm finally starting to find a few! As for the bans, I've been working on something about that for a very long time, but it's really like hitting a moving target. The problem is (pokies not inculded), there is no real final answer at the moment. The more I dig, the more apparent it becomes that it's an odd situation because in some instances, it becomes an issue of things technically being illegal, but certain bodies have chosen not to enforce the law. This means that a LOT of species that would technically be illegal have been imported in "legally" over the last couple decades, and it was permitted. For example, when Brazil was was contacted about a certain species, their representative said that NO Brazilian species were EVER legally exported out of the country, which would make the sale and trade of ALL Brazilian species in the US illegal. This obviously caused quite the panic from people new to the hobby, but it was something that was kind of known for years.
      When you try to get answers from those who enforce these laws, their answers are often evasive and conflicting. In other instances, one person from a certain agency says one thing, and then another from the same agency says something totally different. In the case of the T. seladonia, there were some seized (even though the importers did everything by the book), and for the time being, they can't be imported and shouldn't be sold. That was the latest I've heard on that. However, some people are taking the approach that, if vendors are continuing to sell the Brazilian species, then it should be okay for them to sell the T. seladonia. Unfortunately, the difference is that the majority of the Brazilian species have been in the hobby for a long time, so it would be quite the task to figure out if any could have been legally exported at some point (or, if some of the species could have come from surrounding countries without those export laws). The T. seladonia is a very new species, and it was very easy to deduce that the original ones were poached from the wild. The powers that be ARE watching, and I really worry about that reflecting poorly on the hobby. That could be the type of thing that could cause them to put the kibosh on all Brazilian species.
      I could go on about this forever. as there is just SO MANY nuances to the issue. If there is ever a definitive answer that I can feel comfortable reporting on, I will certainly cover it. At this point, anything I could put together could change in an instant or be construed as "poking the bear."

    And about those people messing up Avicularia and Caribena husbandry... with so much information on the internet I'm surprised they actually manage to mess it up. C. versicolor was my third tarantula I've gotten (about 2-3 weeks after first one) and gave me no problem raising it up (yeah, it was a tiny sling at first)
    By the way, I haven't heard from you about those pictures C. versicolor in nature so I guess you didn't see them or something. If you're still interested, let me know and I'll get you the link or something to more selected gallery.

      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад

      Hello! Yeah, that was a bummer. I mean, I knew it was coming, but it always sucks when one dies, no matter the cause.
      I think the problem is that there are STILL folks out there telling people they need to be kept super moist. I just had someone comment on an old C. versicolor that I was keeping it too dry and I was going to kill it. *sigh. People also read that these guys die for no reason, so they start to freak out if something appears wrong to them. One guy I spoke to was worried that his A. avicularia wasn't webbing and that it was "sick", so he soaked down all the substrate.
      I emailed back! Oh no! I looked at all the photos, and they were absolutely STUNNING. I'm so sorry. I've had a couple people lately say that they didn't get my responses, and I'm now I'm concerned that I'm ending up in bulk. Thank you so much much for sending them!

      Sorry for the delay, Jonathan. It's one of my favorites as well. I just couldn't possibly include all of the blue ones, and their legs turn more gray as they age, so my female really wasn't looking blue.

    I have five coming from FNT in two days . No blue ones . Good info out there for all , except M robustum which is spotty at best . Any advice would be greatly appreciated . Great video ! A blue T is my next , and probably last spider due to space restrictions . T Metallica is gorgeous . What size batteries do they take ?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад

      Congrats on your new acquisitions, Dan! For the M. robustum, give yours deep, moist substrate. It is a burrowing species that appreciates moisture. They will also continue to burrow even as adults, so keep giving them deep sub when you have to rehouse.
      They take AAA batteries. haha

      @@TomsBigSpidersThank you very much Tom . The M robustum is in a fairly large enclosure for it's size (2") with deep substrate , however it hasn't shown any sign of burrowing . On the other hand , the L parahybana (1/2") disappeared within one minute . Haven't seen it since . Thanks again . Looking forward to your next video !

    Great tutorial video Tom. Always enjoy your videos. I still consider myself a beginner even though I've been in the hobby for over a year. I've got six old worlds, with my Tlitlocatl Vagans being very defensive. Still would like to add a blue to my collection. Again thanks for the tutorial. I'll probably start with a new world blue.

    Awesome footage in the video. I was waiting for the Aphonopelma seemanni the whole time lol. I have all my Ts labeled with scientific and common names and have my Pseud. sp. blue as Colombian bluebottle. Btw did you ever try yours in a semi-arboreal setup? I have mine in one and it spends half the time on the ground and half the time crawling around the top. It even webbed up the leaves I glued to the cork bark.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад

      Thank you so much! The A. seemanni was one of the ones I was considering, but some folks don't believe the blue form is a true form, and I didn't want to get into all of that. haha
      I have not yet, but plan to when I rehouse my smaller one! :)

    What i’ve heard is that they aren’t actually blue but that light can’t pass through the hairs which breaks the light or something giving it the illusion that they are blue. Could explain why majority of them are almost a jet black under no lighting. Now i could be completely wrong here so don’t take my word for it lol.

    Have 2 on that list, Sazimai & Metallica. Have not seen the Sazimai since i got it months ago but i knew that would be the case. Even though they dont mature with blue you may have added the Caribena Versicolor to that list, love the blue greens on them from slings to sub juvenile stage. Yes i said greens, very emerald green. What about the H. Pulchripes?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад +1

      Hi, Shawn! The P. saziamai should eventually be more visible once it puts on some size. I see mine all of the time now. And I was going to mention Phormictopus and C. versicolor slings, but that's not their adult coloration, so I kept them off the list. I've bred the C. versicolor, and had footage of the slings to use, but it just seemed misleading to include spiders that are only blue as slings. As for the H. pulchripes, I pulled it from the list last second because the males don't have the blue at all, and mature females tend to fade out. I will definitely include it on the update video.

      @@TomsBigSpiders Knew you had your reasons, dont think many people kmow the huge color differences between males and females of some species though, so they tend to buy upon what they saw and end up disappointed when either the male or the female in some instances dont have that vibrant colors.

  • @Briandotmiller

    Hi Tom I recently read a comment where you mentioned that you omitted the h pulchripes from this list partly because the males don’t really have the blue. I have an unsexed 2in juvenile with absolutely stunning blue legs. Would this be an indication of a suspected female or do both males and females look pretty identical at this size? I’m still waiting for a big enough molt to accurately sex it.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 года назад

      Hello! I struggled with this one, and I probably should have stuck with my original plan and included it. It is one of my favorite tarantula species, and the females are just stunning. I was just thinking that the males don't have the blue when they mature, and the mature females tend to dull out a bit. The juveniles are simply gorgeous. If I remember correctly, they looked pretty similar at that size, but I'll have to go back and check the photos. The males are quite small when they mature, too.

    • @Briandotmiller
      @Briandotmiller 4 года назад

      Tom Moran thanks for the reply. One more question do the males of this species have both the hooks on their front legs and the “boxing gloves” I have heard you mention before that not all tarantula species will get these
