  • What are my top 15 favorite tarantulas in my collection? In this video, I attempt to figure it out!
NOTE: This list is only for fun and is not intended to be a "The Best Tarantula Species" list. These are just some personal favorites in my collection at the moment. If I'm being truthful, I love them all!
Also, I usually get the footage of these spiders when I'm doing feeding/cleaning/watering. For ones with dirty bowls, I DID clean them (and in two instances, there were second water dishes with clean water). The G. pulchripes actually has three water dishes because she filled two with dirt. :)

After so many years of keeping Tarantulas it still fascinates me how much variety there is to them. Makes it even harder to make a choice, doesn't it?😉

I simply cannot do without my Brachyepelma species, I was terrified of spiders so much so that I couldn't even look at spider photos but one day I noticed a B. Smithii & my whole world changed yes I was still scared but there was something about this species that drew me in, I finally plucked up the courage to get one & the more I learnt the more my fear seem to vanish & the more I fell in love with tarantulas now I live with over 100 new world species and I wouldn't have it any other way, they now give me a reason to get out of bed each morning with a smile on my face 😊🤗🕷️

Such beautiful spiders.... and was so happy to see your Klaasi featured! I live in the Mexican State of Colima and literally can go in my backyard and find them if I look hard enough. I find them to be beautiful, and super calm, having handled several wild ones here (moving them to avoid traffic, constructions, etc), and haven't even got a single kick. I take great pride in my Home State T!

Hey Tom, love this video, it's always nice to see you do some more "fun" things every now and then!
Your S. hoffmanni is gorgeous, monotypic genera are super cool to me! I love the tiny little horn she has, very unique! In some pictures I see of these guys it looks like a little chocolate chip, lol. I think it's interesting that tarantulas from both the old world and new world have developed these foveal horns. Your S. crassipes is stunning, these are another species I tend to consider truly advanced, mostly because of the dog thing but a few other reasons as well. Definitely hoping to pick one up at some point, plus I *need* an Aussie spider and I think it's like the only Aussie T in the hobby (okay we have all the subspecies or whatever of these guys but I don't necessarily count those for this purpose...). Autumn's carapace reminds me of a solar eclipse! The black on the femurs is absolutely incredible! How long has the H. pulchripes been in that enclosure? The webbing is INSANE! It looks so clean! Definitely going to have to pick up a subfusca Highland now, those purples are amazing! Do you have names for your klaasi and G. pulchripes? I feel like they deserve them...
My current favourite specimens, in no particular order past the first 3:
    1. Phormingochilus arboricola (Mira)- One of the first tarantulas I ever got! This girl is hands down the most beautiful spider I've ever seen in pictures or real life. I'm about to sound like a brony or something but she's just this glorious velvety jet black and she's an absolute sweetheart, if you asked me my most gentle spider it would be her. I adore this spider so much. These guys get so much flak for being nasty and are often overlooked by the likes of L. nigerrimum (they have a purple sheen) and L. carpenteri (they are giant) and while I know every specimen is different I just can't look at her and see the monster the rest of the hobby sees. I was able to get right up next to her to take some beautiful pictures of her and I was probably a little too close to her and in the back of my head I heard you saying "Well I was being a doofus and trying to take a picture of a P. metallica!" but she was so nice and just sat there for me stretched out and relaxed. Dude I love this spider so much.
    2. Chilobrachys sp. Electric Blue (Cassiopeia)- This was a freebie that my dealer actually had to talk me into getting, I wasn't super into them and since I had just purchased 2 Birupes simoroxigorum I kinda had my "metallic neon blue" itch scratched, but BOY am I glad he talked me into it! She grew into a beautiful, gentle female who has consistently refused to burrow (despite being offered infinite substrate) and has instead webbed up the enclosure beautifully. She is out all the time on her webbing and gentle as can be. When I disturb the enclosure she either sits there or slowly returns to her burrow. I also feel like she's a little smarter than the others cause she used to web over her water dish and after the 6th or 7th time of me cutting away the webbing to change it, she stopped webbing over it. Almost like she recognised "okay we don't web here." I love Chilobrachys so much, and this girl is definitely something special.
    3. Tliltocatl verdezi (The Queen)- Homage to The Queen, since this girl is my queen. I think I explained it in another comment but she was a mystery sling and growing her up and watching her develop colours and change colours and not knowing what to expect was so much fun. She is in a beautiful front opening enclosure on my night table and I sleep like a baby knowing she's just chilling a few feet away. I can't put my finger on it but there's something special about this girl for sure. This is NOT typically the type of tarantula I like which should be pretty apparent from just the ones that are on this list, but this is now my #1 beginner species I recommend to people. If I could only keep 1 tarantula it would probably be this one (the first 2 rank above her cause I love that species as well; this is more like "I just love this specimen"). Her takedowns are amazing, she is beautiful, an amazing display spider, grew at a decent rate, a tiny bit more skittish than a G. porteri but not at all defensive. And she's big!
    4. Ephebopus murinus (Gaia)- I absolutely adore Ephebopus, it is hands down the best genus. This is one of the first t's I ever got, along with my P. arboricola. She is big, beautiful, relatlively calm and quite visible except for premoult. Love her so much and I had to put an Ephebopus on here, frankly I could take up half the list with Ephebopus species.
    5. Poecilotheria subfusca "Lowland" (Pickle)- Finally a female Pokie! I love this girl, she is beautiful, calm, gentle, and a great hunter. Definitely coveted for being my only female Pokie, plus I love the darker colouration.
    6. Heterothele villosella (Hazel)- This girl :) She used to be my absolute favourite but I got a few more that moved up the list, but at this point the spots on the list are interchangable and mean nothing. She is one of the only spiders I have that will come out and explore, even if I tap the enclosure. She is quirky and inquisitive and reminds me of how people describe H. chilense. Cannot recommend this species enough as a beginner old world.
    7. Ornithoctonus aureotibialis (Calypso)- Absolutely beautiful spider, quite visible and in my experience not nearly as defensive as people claim. I have yet to see a threat pose. She stays in her burrow all day and comes out at night to sit on the webbing.
    8. Psalmopoeus irminia (Iris)- Weird little spider. She likes to lounge on her back in the silk flower in her enclosure, she also will come out of the enclosure to explore, I always say she's a Psalmo that thinks she's a Homeoemma! Hoping she keeps the cute and quirky attitude as she grows, but I'll love her even if she doesn't.
    9. Sericopelma sp. Santa Catalina (Sabine)- Obsessed with this beautiful T. Thank you so much for putting them on my radar! It behaves much like you describe your Xenesthis species do, she rolls onto her back and teleports across the cage for pray. I am so excited to grow it up, this is a species that will always be in my collection.
    10. Thrixopelma ockerti (Aurora)- Just picked this one up last week and I am already in love, it has already moulted and has just picked up its adult colours. I will have to get it into a nice front-opening when it grows up. I have only had it for a week but I can tell it's going to be a favourite!!
    11. Ornithoctoninae sp. Vietnam Silver (Morgana)- Just picked this one up two days ago and I am already in love. I accidentally dropped in 2 crickets instead of one and this little spider wrestled them both down, it was adorable! The colouration is extremely unique, even as a sling (definitely deserving of nomination for the "Tiny Diamond" award :D) and I cannot wait to grow it up!
Thanks so much for everything you do for the hobby, keep up the awesome work!

Hey Tom, love the video! My favs are my big girl P. arboricola, my M. robustum, and my A. geniculata (at the moment!) I had been putting off rehousing my P. arboricola for months because I was so nervous (silly me) and eventually I realised she really needed a better enclosure, there was algae growing in her old one and she deserved an upgrade, so I just went ahead and did it and she was just the sweetest thing ever. I ended up having to dig her out but I had an awesome role model who posts a lot of amazing rehousing videos (haha ;p) and she just sat there and scrunched up. I got her into the catch cup and she just very slowly and deliberately walked into the new enclosure. ABSOLUTE sweetheart. If I was 1% less sane I would have just stuck my hand out there and picked her up. She was just so unproblematic and well behaved and I'm just like "yep here's your demonic evil Asian arboreal here to eat your family and kill your babies, lol." My M. robustum is gorgeous and very unique, I love fossorials and there aren't too many NW fossorials. My A. genic is just super cool, hits like a truck and got those adult colours after its first moult with me, it was just so exciting. Of course I love all my Ephebopus, my H. cafreriana, and my B. simoroxigorum, but those 3 definitely take the cake at the moment!
Awesome video again, keep up the great work!

It always amazes me how those small brownish dwarfs turn into those beautiful 8-legged horror hamsters. You definitely have a lot more species to choose from, but if I had to choose favourites I would propably go for the P. rufilata, Ephebopus murinus and Encyocratella olivacea... but that list changes all the time, since every spider has something awesome and fascinating.

    Hi Tom,
thank you for all the great information you put out there. I also enjoy your more "fun" list.
I started listening to your podcast 1-2 years ago and have listened to every episode multiple times by now. It is now my bed time ritual since it really helps me winding down. My boyfriend learned a lot about tarantulas too (maybe voluntarily, maybe not) and really appreciates my 30+ T collection.
Will there be new species-specific husbandry podcasts or genus reviews anytime soon?
    Greetings from Germany!

Hello from the US! Yeah, these are fun to put together every once in a while, and these types of videos DO tend to attract more interaction than my husbandry videos. haha And that's awesome! Oh man...that poor guy. You've got a keeper there if he loves you enough to go to bed listening to some middle aged weirdo talking about spiders. hahaha
Did you have any requests for species you'd like to hear about? :)

Love your list and know your frustration of trying to pick favorites when they are all a joy to own. Also you not having a list of all pokies? 😉 They are great and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for my striata pairing to be successful.
Weird question but have you gotten a Thrigmopoeus truculentus ? Not common at all, but mine has been an absolute wonderful surprise for a normally "oh brown spider".
Also, is there a distinction between the tarantula shapes? Bumba horrida, orphnaecus philippinus, and others seem to have that more slender and smooth look and always wondering why as compared to chunky geniculatas and t. albos.

I can't argue with any of your picks. Some I'd totally be up for. Others, not so much.
Well... given I've only got 4, it's basically impossible to choose a veritable favorite. Instead... I'd say I like each for different reasons.
    B. boehmei : My oldest in my collection, raised her up from a 1.5" unsexed juvie. She's probably close or over 6" now. Raising her up to adulthood has been one of my most rewarding experiences in my life. Her colors are simply mind-blowing.
    B. hamorii : 2nd oldest T and this was the species I wanted the most when I started the hobby since it's the ultimate Hobby Icon. I'm pretty sure this one STILL hasn't reached its adult size. She'll likely outlive the other 3.
    G. porteri : 3rd oldest T. I'm pretty sure this girl was one of the last WC picks from my LPS before Chile began to stop exporting them. Of my foursome, she is my calmest. She never gave me a threat pose in all the years.... and here's what I really love about her : Unlike most of her kind, she does NOT fast ! She's always up for crickets until she's dur for a molt.
    T. albopilosus : 4th and final one. At first, I just didn't get their appeal at all. She was a rescue when someone bored of her dropped her off at the LPS. I just happened to stop by for crickets and the staff let me have her for FREE ! Over the years, I've come to appreciate her unique looks and her voracious appetite.
Eventually I'd love a B. klaasi, G. pulchripes and A. chalcodes of my own.
Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

    1. Tliltocatl verdezi - my big girl "Pepper" is very special to me and I absolutly love her.

    3. Pterinochilus murinus rcf - my old girl "Arrakis", so beautiful and a calm OBT.
    4. Eupalaestrus campestratus - "Molly" 12 years old female, docile, calm, wonderful...
    5. Brachypelma klaasi - "Jalapeño", beautiful girl, love those colors.
    6. Grammostola pulchra - "Salem" - one of my oldest Tarantulas, very calm and big! That black is amazing.
    7. Grammostola pulchripes - "El Dorado" docile, pretty and special.
    8. Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens - "Dune" the last living female of my three chromas, so pretty, I love the blue!
    9. Thrixopelma sp. cuzco -
absolutely special tarantula with great colors.
    10. Harpactira pulchripes - love the calm character and thouse blue grey and gold colors
... a very small list for my collection, but I could go on and on and on like this... there are so many.

Like you, every Tarantula is my favorite! I have just 38 at the moment, been keeping 3-1/2 years. The species that I currently consider my favorite favorites are Andre, my T. stirmi, who is still fairly young and close to 8"; Pookie, the Nhandu tripeppii, that I raised from a 1/3" sling and just experienced his ultimate molt and got his hooks. He will be moving on, to be used for breeding. I tried tong feeding this one when he was around 5". He leapt into the air like a Frisbee Whippet, took the cricket off the tongs, and landed back on the substrate before I could even react. I have a complete Brachypelma collection, I love them all. Can't pick just one. I can't imagine ever being without a P. murinus. I am on my third and fourth, slings named Leia and Poppy. They are very different personalities. Leia webs up everything and is out all the time, very bold. Poppy is shy, has made a tiny little burrow at the base of a vertical corkbark flat, and is seldom seen. I have a GBB named Vesper who has a ton of personality. She is still a juvenile, and I raised her from a tiny sling smaller than my pinky nail. I adore her. I could keep going until I named every spider in my house. I enjoyed seeing your favorites, and saw a couple of species in there that I had not seen before. Loved the Stout Legged Baboon. Loved this video. And I loved that the G pulchripes got 1st place. My queen is also a G porteri named Rosie. She is/was my first T. I got her as an unsexed adult from a pet store. She could be over 20 yrs old for all I know, and the longer I'm in the hobby the more grateful I am that she is still alive. There will be tears when her time comes. I'm like you, and can't pick a favorite but another one that is very high on my list is my 9 year old female GBB. I raised her from a baby and her name is Cersie (from GOT) Not because she's evil (she's a sweetheart, just a bit skittish is all) but because she's so beautiful. And another one that is very high on the list is my AF G pulchripes. She is so docile. She is child safe. She's the one I"ll take out and show people because she is so tolerant of handling, although only for short visits. I could go on but this would turn into a novel. But like you, I love all (43) of them. There isn't any that I'd like to trade off or anything. They are all my 8-legged fur babies. I look at all of my tarantulas at least once a day, so I know it never molted. I personally wouldn’t recommend a new keeper to buy one for that reason. For comparison, my B albiceps that I bought at the same time has molted three times in that 10 month span. It’s mind blowing how slow those tarantulas can grow

My G. pulchipes has always been out, even when they were little brown ticks lol. It is growing slow and I am sure that it is female. I need to check it's last molt one day lol. It is around 4 inches. My T albo matured out in 18 months and passed away yesterday. I bought it in January 3rd of 2020. He was about a 1/4 inch. It lasted 3 years 6 months before it passed. It ate two weeks ago and had a nice sized abdomen. I have higher temps so I am sure that is the reason. I like 77 - 80F. My T's seem to like it as well. I tried to find a breeder locally with no luck. I guess I will have to buy 3 more when I move to Miami FL in the coming months. I try to comment on all your videos. Sorry I have been too busy to comment on the last few for obvious reasons. Keep up the good work and I 100% agree on your Number 1! Mine is only 4 inches at 3 years of age. Super calm. When I have more room I will be getting 5 more in hopes of maybe 2 females. If I get 5 females I will be doing the human "Happy Dance!" lol. Truth be told I would trade all of my T's, including my precious P regalis, for an equivalent amount of M. balforuri. 10 females in 1 enclosure!!! I would even go for 20! Yet... I would still have 1 G. pulchripes. It's a must! Love them as well. Keep a mic on Billie! Her reactions make me giggle lol. @@TomsBigSpiders Yea it stinks. Have you ever heard of a Cobweb Castle? There is a guy that builds them and sends you a southern porch spider with it. Im thinking that would be safe enough and easy to hide. Check them out though. They are pretty interesting and look like a pretty cool addition to a spider collection. Also thank you for taking the time out to respond I respect that. Allot of youtubers don't interact with their fans whatsoever so I like seeing someone at least shoot a message or two. I understand nobody can reply to thousands of contents but one or two doesn't hurt so much respect to you for doing that, and good luck to you with all your future endeavors.

These two started the webbing after I put them into these enclosures a little over a year ago. Before that, they burrowed quite a bit. I'm not sure what has changed, but they like to hang out on the surface now!

Of the five I have, at the moment my C. versicolor is a favorite just because it has a crazy feeding response and seems pretty happy to pig out all the time. Seriously, it sat in its web tunnel for about a week after molting and seemed completely uninterested in food, and now a couple of weeks later even after eating it's out wandering around and acting like I haven't fed it ever. It really is such a little pig.
Edit: I should probably add that it's only a 1" sling at the moment, so it's not like it should take a week to harden up after a molt.

Hey, Mike! I did a fun podcast topic earlier this year where I did an "End of 2022" mock award show for my tarantulas. In it, I did something like you describe here. In the case of my top 15 here, a lot of these are...well...just ones that I love! It can be difficult to articulate what it is about each that makes me love them so much (although I tried to in this video). For example, my G. pulcripes...I just love the species, and this is my largest girl. Perhaps I'll do a video version of the podcast with "Best Eater, Prettiest, etc". Thanks!

Tom I noticed some youtubers ordering and buying and unboxing more and more and more and more spiders lately, I know because it's addictive and we want to learn and observe all of them but sometimes I worry they will send that message to copy cats for notoriety and "fame", and many people get overwhelmed fast, and then comes neglect, even with something so hard to neglect.
I know many people are responsible and yes you should get as many as you wish if that's the case, I just want people to be aware a huge collection happens fast and people need to know, sure it's not a cat or dog, but things can go downhill if you get busy and have other priorities, mold, ants, other bug infestations, drying out, escapes, uneaten food, dirty water, other oddball occurrences.
I've kept and bred reptiles, fish and Ts for 30 years or more so I've been there too, just thought it might be a good podcast or video topic.
    Great vid.
    Take care brother.

Hello! This is a bit of a problem in the hobby and with some of the content creators. Not only is it addictive to get new animals in, but unboxing videos are VERY popular on RUclips and an easy way to get some extra views. It doesn't take long before your collection explodes and you have too many to properly care for. Over the years, I've known several folks that ended up getting in too far over their heads by buying too many spiders too quickly. Like you said, some will see this, think that it's the norm, and emulate the behavior. It can lead to burn out and poor care. I think that I may have covered this exact topic before, so I'm going to have to double check! Thank you!

    • @jdssurf

@TomsBigSpiders I cant for the life of me figure out why people like the unboxing videos.
