    That stuff at 4:15 might be speaking to me. Telling me that I'm probably going to whiff it or or top it (or maybe shank it) actually gives me some hope. *And*, assuring me that doing the drill can get me past what my brain has been telling me can't possibly work is *also* most encouraging. Know what I'll be fiddling with tomorrow. . .

    You guys have some great videos, and I thank you. This one has helped me more than any yet.
    I have always had problems with "flipping" the wrists during the downswing and causing the clubhead to pass my hands before impact. This drill has virtually eliminated it within a short period of time. I've had a lot of trouble with fat and thin hits that really hurt my confidence and could never figure out exactly what would correct it.
    This drill really helps you with distance, accuracy, and especially with being able to strike the ground at the same point swing after swing. The drill showed me that I wasn't getting on my left side early enough and my hips and shoulders weren't anywhere near as open at impact as I thought they were. I strongly recommend that anyone who is having inconsistent ball contact try working with this and you may see drastic improvement like I have. Good luck!

    So spot on what you say at 4:25 I did almost miss the ball when I tried it because I'm so used to flipping and the club being "longer." I know this is one of those cliche phrases but I feel like I have to "stay down" on the ball so much more since I'm so used to standing up.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 лет назад +1

      You're not alone in that, Dan, we see a lot of misses and tops the first time trying it.

    Mike & Shaun, this is a game changer. Had a go today in a net and got lots of very different strikes (including shanks) but when you "get it", it's remarkable - almost simple, uncomplicated. I found that it's the hand position that's all important - getting them in front, almost ahead, of your core at impact was key to delivering the club face without excessive manipulation. It's going to take a lot of repetitions to trust it but I'm convinced it'll pay off. You could almost focus all students, from beginner up, on the this drill and it would "build out" so many other good behaviours.

      Sounds like you completely "get" this one, Jonathan. Uncomplicated is exactly what it should feel like and what many of the best in the world feel. Keep at it!

    Good one guys! Figured this out a month or so ago and started doing it. Your absolutely right it's a bit messy at the start, but for those who are interested in trying it stick with it, it does get better IF you rep it. And rep it, and do it again. The brain is stubborn as heck when it comes to new movement patterns, but the myelin will eventually rewire the circuits and it gets better.

    Excellent stuff. I've studied a lot of different instructors over the years. Every one of them, mostly, have added value to my understanding of what to strive for. What you guys are showing here really "marries" up well with some the better instruction I have viewed in the past. Lots of what you demonstrate here fits, for example, with what Wayne Defrancesco has been teaching (though he uses different words to express the same dynamics) as well as Russell Heritage and Bradley Hughes.
    The hardest part of what you teach (that I have seen so far) is the concept of "falling" or shifting to the lead foot. That's because I was in my youth a chronic over-hip-slider-shifter toward the target. That led to getting very stuck which led to shots wiped way right or snap hooked (the dreaded two way miss).
    So for me, it would be really great if you could point me to some of your vids that actually address "how much" to shift toward the lead foot without shifting too much. I find this exceptionally difficult to "calibrate." Whenever I try to employ the falling or shifting to the lead foot, I find my lead hip ends up blocking my ability to rotate to the left. Maybe it's all in my head. Or maybe it actually is a physical limitation. Please help me with this if you can.
    Thanks again for your method of instruction, where you actually take the time to not just show us what a good swing looks like, but to also show us how to execute moves in sequence. Hogan used to say that you wouldn't explain to a young child who wanted to know how to open a door by explaining at length what the door looks like when it is opened. Instead, you would teach the child how to turn the handle. You guys are doing this really well. Keep up the great work.

    Great info guys. My fault and many others, with getting more open at impact is - what is causing the hips to stall in the downswing leading into impact. This is a version of one of my favorite half swing drills to get that "tour open" at impact drills. The issue is there seems to be an endless list of counterproductive backswing and starting of the downswing faults that stalls the hips into impact. Ive used a variation of the drill with alignment stick in handle and using a tour striker which aligns with what your showing here. Seemingly an endless quest.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf

      Nice, Mark. Your comments are right on point and why we thought it necessary to add the "pre-open" checklist. Without getting to the delivery phase with things in place, getting open just won't happen.

    Possibly a helpful added suggestion: set up in Sean’s preset “pro” position (shaft slightly more than half way down, weight forward, knees flexed, hips slightly opened and for me the club face closed). Now slide your right hand (for a right hand golfer) down the shaft toward the head and with only your middle finger holding the shaft, maintain this relationship as the hips rotate open and the club face returns to the ball. Because your right hand is significantly below the left and the middle finger is holding back the shaft, you can’t flip the club head and you maintain the proper side bend through impact and really opens those hips!

    Gentlemen, I love your videos and analysis, this latest one being no exception. You indicate here that the arms and club need to be positioned into the delivery zone before rotating through impact. Other instructors preach that rotation is what brings the club into impact and that a player shouldn't try to move the club into position. What does Gear show that the pros actually do during the downswing? Blend arm and body movement or just rotate. Thanks and keep your videos coming.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  7 лет назад +1

      It's absolutely a blend of the arms and body. The player may feel a bias towards one or the other, but the reality of what happens is pretty clear. Great question.

  • @stevenielsen3
    @stevenielsen3 6 лет назад +1

    You noted exactly what I've been suffering from. I'm going through a swing change and I've been struggling with this move of rotation and opening. No matter how slow or repetitious I do this drill my body can't feel it, the video of myself looks wrong, and my brain can't figure it out. Then after multiple sessions of trying to complete this drill, I just stop trying and then don't pick up the club again for weeks....which only compounds the difficulty in training and learning. I'm totally perplexed and frustrated.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  6 лет назад +1

      The reason slow is key with this at first is because it allows you to be hyper-aware of where your body/club are. No doubt you think you're going slow, but it's probably not slow enough if you're not sure what's happening. Then are you clear on where you should be at impact? Awareness and where you're trying to get to are the keys with this one.

    Great video as usual guys. Quick RELATED QUESTION......I had asked in a question to another one of your videos, how REALLY IS IT, that the hands actually drop to that waist/hip high delivery position from the top.......your response, if I recall correctly, was that it was more related to the left shoulder (and maybe left hip ), staying low a lot longer than I was likely aware of, or used to......do I have that right? I'm trying to connect the dots to this next phase of the downswing in this video. Thanks again.

    Would you say not to many people realize that coming into impact you have to be internally rotating 'into' the lead hip socket against a posting lead leg as that is the motion that 'clears' the lower body?
    Think too many people still think that the whole hip structure the pelvic girdle moves as one 'whole unit' & that it 'opens' or 'rotates open' all together. When after the delivery position, that p6 illustrated in the video, where both hip sockets are momentarily both externally rotated, from there the motion of both hip sockets is to be moving into being internally rotated into & through impact ?

    I’ve always had left wrist rotation into impact, or a roll release. Does this drill supposed to have a more square release through impact, I’ve tried the drill and it feels like I tend to make good contact when I allow my trail arm to almost push or go into full extension into impact. So I’m not sure if that is correct or not either. And how are we supposed to drop into this position from a film swing?

    One old mantra is start the downswing from bottom to top. Not sure if this is exactly correct but as humans we're obviously very arms/hands/fingers dominant. Very hard not to start downswing with the arms which can lead to throwing the club. Do you guys have a simple order of sequence. Something that we amateurs can have as a simple swing thought?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  7 лет назад

      Love this question. The best visual of sequence would be in our "How To Stop Sliding" videos which I'll link to at the bottom. If that's done, you'll be encouraged to really get the arms and club going. The problem is that most golfers try the "ground up" stuff once they reach the top of the swing... that's too late. There just isn't enough time to get everything done in that tidy little sequence we here so much about. One of the big differences with the pros and ams is that the pros are starting the ground part of their sequence right after the takeaway. Most ams aren't starting it until they begin the downswing.

    Do you notice any correlation between physical ability (perhaps you did some screens to measure hip range of motion) of golfer and ability to be open? I’ve seen female golfers who usually have better mobility than men, able to get into a much more open position at impact...even the higher handicappers.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  7 лет назад +3

      How much a player can open is definitely tied to their physical ability. But the biggest obstacle we see is how the club and body are oriented on the downswing. That's more the problem initially than physical limitations.

  • @jakesnake66
    @jakesnake66 6 лет назад +1

    Guys, yall are the experts, no doubt. But I've watched literally thousands of elite swings in slow motion, and while the positions in your video are dead on, in my experience your sequence/timing is not. If I'm understanding, you're claiming the "pre-hit/loaded" position is achieved *prior* to the lower body/hips opening significantly. You say when the arms are "just below parallel" the hips should be "just starting to open." This is not at all what I see when I look at swings of touring pros. In fact, what has struck me as one of the few defining principles of world-class ball strikers is how 80%+ of their thru-swing rotation occurs well before the arms drop into the loaded position. In fact, I've noted for years how as the hands and club shaft get to and past impact, the rotation of the player's body has all but *completely* stopped. It's caused me to no longer believe that the best players "turn through impact." Instead, it's a case of tremendous clearing *before* impact, and there's a causal relationship, too. The hard clearing is *required* to create the lag or allow the hit to be "late." This seems to be the result of two main factors: 1) these are exceptionally gifted people/players; and 2) By controlling the backswing with their body pivot, rather than arms and hands, the "downswing" begins before the harms, hands, and club have reached "the top." In fact, it's precisely that initiation of the downswing that sets the critically-important angles to begin with and defines the necessary sequence. The hips *cannot* "wait" so late in the downswing as you demonstrate, because the larger muscles cannot move/rotate anywhere near fast enough to accommodate the speed of the release. After the hands drop into the the loaded position, the hips better be open already or it's just too late, because the clubhead is about to travel THREE FEET in a fraction of a second. During that same time, the hands will move about 6 inches, and the players zipper won't move at all. In fact, only by the lower body and lower torso being open can such astonishing torque be generated and tour-level clubhead speed even occur. The problem is that the vast majority of human beings do not possess the flexibility to achieve this without the shoulders spinning open with the body, which destroys all chance for good ball-striking. Sorry I rambled. RUclips comments are a terrible place to discuss things. lol

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  6 лет назад +4

      Keep in mind this is a drill. By nature are often not exact representations of the actual swing. We're aware of the amount of rotation and more importantly when it occurs as you mentioned. We've done a number of videos on the subject. But this drill does have a positive effect on several things that happen in an extremely short time frame in the real swing... that's why we like it.

  • @danhoyles
    @danhoyles 4 года назад

    In many cases when amateur golfers have poor rotation or if their hip is not opening up enough at impact position, it is highly likely they also have poor swing plane, over the top swing, casting and other issues. If your shoulder turn too early and have massive over the top swing, your arms might reach impact position before the hip reaches ideal impact position. When lot of golfers say they want to get their hips more "open" they have other issues that make it almost impossible for them to open their hips more without wiffing or hitting massive pulls. I would hate to see people trying to manufacture some positions instead of trying to learn to make it happen naturally.
