Hey Dylan love your videos. I'm thinking of getting another fp after I sold mine two years ago. - it didn't function well for my work flow at the time. How do you handle exposure? I remember it doesn't always show correctly when the highlights are clipping it. My memories a little hazy what my exact problem was... does this ring a bell?
I use false color to measure exposure and make sure to always keep my highlights in the yellow. I then turn on highlight recovery in the raw tab in Resolve in addition to changing the color space to blackmagic for better dynamic range - that usually covers me. I’ve always underexposed the shadows and brought them back in Post. The fp has been really good in retaining detail in shadows but not so much in the highlights in my experience (at ISO 100 anyway).
What do you think of adding the DPL flip screen mod to your setup? I’m torn between compromising the factory weather sealing vs the added functionality.
I don’t know if I’d give up the weather sealing. Personally I love using the EVF, and I think adding a small external monitor would be a better solution than comprising the weather sealing.
You mention in the video that this setup is perfect for 4k 12bit CDNG. What is the longest clip possible using these components before recording stops? Orico's max 10Gpbs sounds enough for the job but is it really though?
That really seems to be the perfect compact rig for my favourite camera. Thank you for sharing! And you could probably mount it inside a bigger rig, if you need a monitor and an external battery. I only wish 52weeks would make that SSD plate for the Silverstone MS12 enclosure, as that performed the best in my tests and 20 Gbit/s helps with offloading speeds. But maybe I could 3d print one. Btw, do you use an ND filter for your rig? On my big Sigma FP rig, I use the Tilta mattebox, but that alone is bigger than your rig. Any recommendations? Or do you just work without one?
Hey there! I do use an ND filter. I use this one from K&F concept - amzn.to/3A4kDFO. I'm also a fan of the Tilta mini matte box, but to try keep this everyday rig small I just use a lens hood whenever possible
@@DylColeman Thanks! I will check that one out. One more question about the Niceyrig handle: You called it a rubber material, but the product site says it's leather. Can you confirm weather it's genuine leather or faux leather/rubber?
Would like to support your affiliate links but need help. For the Samsung 980 Pro link, there are 2 options. Did you get the base 980 Pro or the 980 pro option that says "with heatsink" or would either of them fit the Orico enclosure?
I used sigma fp too and want to get another ssd for the camera, do you have an other option or a couple ssd recommendations for the camera that is compatible with the sigma fp?
So far the only SSD's I've used with the fp are NVMe's like the Samsung one I mentioned in this video and the Samsung 1TB T5 drives. I don't think they make the 1 TB T5's anymore 🤔
Funny enough it was the smaller size 2TB NVMe that gave me issues when I used it with the DPL setup I mentioned in the vid. Couldn’t get rid of the cricket-like squeaking noise it produced. But others have said they’ve been happy with that larger capacity smaller NVMe 🤷🏾♂️
@5:02 does that safety/alignment pin come out or can it be pushed down? Would like to be able to use this on the bottom of other cams but wouldnt be able to if the pin isnt movable. Thanks
Hi thank you for sharing a very good video , may I ask a question I have bought an ssd 980 pro and orico box and I used a cable that come with the orico but I can't shoot a 100fps it's record just a few sec. then cut . Is it has to set up anything else, thank you.
I’m not sure but I would try formatting the drive both in-camera on via computer. I experienced the same issue with a drive in the past and formatting fixed it. I would also rule out the cable by using a different one.
@@DylColeman Thank you, I had try new cable and it's work better but sometime it's stop again need to restart camera to continue record 100 fps but other framer ate is work flow ,thank you for sharing your experience.
I was just trying out this enclosure with a WD SN770 2TB but its write speed dropped too much once it was at 50% capacity to record more than 60 seconds at a time. Just wanted to ask: Are you able to record longer clips with the Samsung 980 PRO all the way to the end of its capacity? And do you have any experience with the 2TB model of that same drive?
Sorry, I don’t. I’ve only been recording short clips with it thus far. Haven’t tried recording a roll with the fp yet. Still use the bmpcc4k for that. No experience with the 2 TB model either 😕
Having that same issue! Not sure which nvme to use to allow it to keep recording the whole time. Thinking about trying the samsung to see, but my only success is with the t7 external drives. The nvmes work but have limited recording.
@@danielsen02 I've got an answer for you! I'm using a WD SN850 and it works flawlessly until 100% full. I think the high end Samsung drives are also sure to work. Any NVME with more than 500MB/s *once the write speed drops* will work. They all slow down once the cache is filled. And you can see these speeds if you search for "Techpowerup Write Intensive Usage." They do good tests for many, not all, drives. If you look up the WD SN850 you'll see on the chart it starts writing at 5,000 MB/s then drops to 1,000 MB/s so it works.
@@danielsen02 I've got an answer! And youtube keeps deleting it for some reason. Basically all NVMEs have a cache that fills up, and then they slow down. You need one that doesn't slow down below 500 MB/s. WD SN850 works, and you can look at tech power up's NVME reviews under the "Write Intensive Usage" section and its chart. The SN850 starts at 5,000 MB/s, then drops to 1,000 MB/s for the remainder of its capacity. Any NVME like this will work, but most are not made for sustained write. I think most of the high-end Samsung drives also work. Just check out their reviews and that one particular chart.
@@danielsen02 RUclips will not stop deleting my replies, maybe because I'm referring to an outside website even if I'm not linking anything. You need to find "write intensive usage" tests for any particular drive you're curious about. There should be a chart that shows the drive starting off really fast, then dropping dramatically once the cache fills. As long as this lower speed is above 500 MB/s, the drive should work. My WD SN850 starts at 5,000 and drops to 1,000 so I can fill the entire drive with the highest quality the FP can record.
Intangibles? Did you mean 'tangible'? What you explained are TANGIBLE qualities. Tangible means: Perception by touch, experience. Maybe it was a slip of the tongue. (Or, maybe I don't know my definitions - which is often the case). Love your content, by the way.
Not sure. I wasn't doing any super long takes when I tested it out in England, but I was able to roll for over a minute without issue. Maybe even a couple at the longest. Will have to do a longer test 🤔
I did some thorough testing on this, although not with that enclosure and drive in particular. The gist is that recording in 4K 12bit 29.97 FPS does not seem to be an issue with most drives and enclosures. For >15 minutes it didn't cause me any problems, I probably tested even for much longer, but I haven't documented that. The real challenge is FHD 12 bit 100 FPS, as that fails on most drives and enclosures just after seconds, but I was able to make even that work for more than 15 minutes. Generally, drives with lower power consumption or gen 3 drives seem to perform much better on this, but the enclosure plays also a huge role. Technically, there should be a record limit around 70 minutes, if I'm not mistaken, but I've made recordings much longer than that, but only in 10 bit, to save drive space. Hope that helps! Let me know if you need any additional data. :)
@@saschathiede thanks for the reply. which ssd enclosure and ssd itself do you use for 15-minute 10-bit 120 fps shooting? and did you manage to capture 12 bits of 100 fps?
@@muhammadsaydumov For my tests I used two different enclosures (Asus TUF A1 and Silverstone MS12) and three different drives (Corsair MP510 960 GB, Corsair MP600 1 TB, Seagate Firecuda 530 2 TB). All of these drives in both enclosures worked for at least 15 minutes at UHD 12-bit 29.97 FPS. For FHD 12-bit 100 FPS, it becomes interesting. With the Asus enclosure, the longest recording I could get was 51 s. The Silverstone enclosure performed much better, but with the Seagate drive the recording failed miserably after 2:14 min, and I had to slow format the drive afterwards. With both Corsair drives in the Silverstone enclosure, I could record in this setting for at least 15 minutes. I did not test any 120 FPS footage, probably because that isn't common in europe, or it could be due to technical limitations. My conclusion is that the controller of the Silverstone enclosure is better compatible with the Sigma FP, compared to the Asus controller. As for the drives, I believe that Gen 3 drives, i.e. the Corsair drives in my test, perform generally much better. This could be due to the maximum power consumption. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any data on the maximum allowed power draw of the Sigma FP's Type C port, but for the drives, the tests conducted by Tom's Hardware provide the following data: - Corsair MP510 960 GB: 2.95 W avg., 4.89 W peak - Corsair MP600 1 TB: 3.95 W avg., 6.43 W peak - Seagate FireCuda 530 2 TB: 4.99 W avg., 8.72 W peak I could imagine that the Type C port supports 5V 900 mA (sustained), i.e. 4.5 W, meaning that the Seagate drive's average power consumption already exceeds that. This could explain the hard crash I encountered. For my current setup I bought two more of the Silverstone enclosure, and also a Corsair MP510 1920 GB, which is seems to perform similar to the lower capacity one. So far, this seems to work very well. For example, I used this setup to record more than 70 minutes of UHD 10-bit 29.97 without any issues. I believe the Corsair drives could already be end-of-life, so if you want to replicate this setup, you might have to look for remaining stock. Otherwise, I would suggest you look for Gen 3 drives with TLC flash, high enough sustained write speeds for your settings and an average power consumption

@@saschathiede you’re correct, it’s leather. My mistake.
Would like to support your affiliate links but need help. For the Samsung 980 Pro link, there are 2 options. Did you get the base 980 Pro or the 980 pro option that says "with heatsink" or would either of them fit the Orico enclosure?
I think either of them would fit but I don’t know for sure. I’m using the one without heat sink.
I'm quite curious about the audio setup, they have one for the mic but, where is for headphone jack? to monitor at the same time.
So the fp doesn't have a headphone jack unless you purchase the EVF-11 attachment which has one.
@@DylColeman So, does it also have mic jack as well when it applied with EVF-11?
@@DJMax85 That's correct. The mic port on the bottom corner of the body stays accessible and the EVF-11 adds a 3.5mm jack for headphones
Sickk!
can you still use a tripod with the arca swiss?
what are some ways around this?
You can but for this bottom plate you’ll need a turnaround which since the arca Swiss mount is kinda sideways/backwards. Small rig makes one
Very nice, but does it only fit that enclosure? I cannot buy it from Amazon and having problems finding it.
Unfortunately, it only fits that enclosure.
How about the SN740 m.2 2230 SSD 2TB NVMe?
Double the storage in a smaller size format.
Do you have a solution for this on a gimbal like the ronin sc? Great video btw👌
Sorry, haven’t tried this thing in a gimbal yet - with or without the bottom plate. Will have to try it out. Thanks for watching!
@5:02 does that safety/alignment pin come out or can it be pushed down? Would like to be able to use this on the bottom of other cams but wouldnt be able to if the pin isnt movable. Thanks
The plate is designed specifically for the fp so the alignment pin doesn't retract or come out.
Content like this makes me sad I got rid of my fpl

Total cost with shipping to Germany = $167
Sorry to hear so much got added in shipping 🙁
I was speaking more to the feeling I get when I do those things rather than the things themselves, if that makes sense.
how many minutes can this ssd drive record without stopping, in 4k 12 bit dng?
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any data on the maximum allowed power draw of the Sigma FP's Type C port, but for the drives, the tests conducted by Tom's Hardware provide the following data:
- Corsair MP510 960 GB: 2.95 W avg., 4.89 W peak
- Corsair MP600 1 TB: 3.95 W avg., 6.43 W peak
- Seagate FireCuda 530 2 TB: 4.99 W avg., 8.72 W peak
I could imagine that the Type C port supports 5V 900 mA (sustained), i.e.

Hi Dylan, like to consult you. If I need to have a cage (so that I can fit an external monitor on top), will the Acra Swiss bottom plate fit?
You should be able to attach it to any 1/4 20 on the cage.

Can the Arca Swiss Bottom plate be mounted on top of a gimbal?
With the 1/4 20 attachment point I imagine you could mount it somewhere on a cage so that you could fix the fp on the gimbal as well, but I haven't tried. Would be an interesting setup for sure

@@neoterixx3440 I have videos on my channel about this drive and an example of continuous recording on a 4 TB SSD, if I understood your short question correctly.
@@UriRa Yes, I’m curious why you think using an SSD NVMe with an enclosure is a dead end? For instance, I’m planning to get the SAMSUNG 990 PRO SSD NVMe 4TB along with the Orico enclosure. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this setup and any potential limitations.
@@neoterixx3440 It will only work for short recordings or segments - so that the translation is clear.
WD has external SSDs based on NVME of the two tested and available to me, one works tolerably, the second one I gave to my daughter for regular work with a computer, it is not suitable for fp, although the disks have the same name and part number...
And there are no Orico boxes - keep in mind.
Samsung external drives working with fp are not nwme!
I have made tests and videos on external SSD drives for the full memory capacity, but you will not find this on NVME sticks)
