@@be_shoichi Hi! I just got my mount and enclosure yes I definitely have noticeable high pitched whine when in use - I'm messaging with Dark Power Laboratory now
@@oliverqiu_ Would be great if you can share what they say. Since the noise is coming from the SSD itself, it might be a problem with Sabrent (or any of the non-Sigma-recommended) SSDs.
@@be_shoichi so the issue is with the pressure on the ssd from the blue thermal pad in the ssd case - if you take the case off or remove the blue pad there is no noise we don't know if this is a Sabrent issue or with the ssd controller, maybe different thermal pad too, hope this helps! i shoot indoors mostly so I will use it without the thermal pad
@@oliverqiu_ IT WORKED! Now I can barely hear the high-pitch noise after removing the thermal pad. I will pin this comment since it should be a common issue for all. If I come across any side effects down the road like overheating, I will report back. Thanks for highlighting this!
Thank you for this video. I just bought a Sigma FP, and have been trying to figure out if they made a gimble for it. Also an SSD mount. You saved me so much time and money with this video! =)
I have the FP L. Nothing else compares to the FP/FPL. Image and colours are amazing for stills and video. Unfortunately the LCD, battery life and auto-focus are deal breakers and that is why am selling it.
That's quite a coincidence - hope you're having fun with it! I haven't really tried or researched about follow focus for Summicron but I guess the only way to remedy the focus tab is to 3D print a focus ring like this one? www.ducloslenses.com/blogs/cinemodjournal/notch
I usually do my best not to pull focus while recording. That is by planning my shots in advance and maintaining the distance from the subject, and using higher aperture like F8~ wherever possible. By no means it's desirable, but personally a reasonable tradeoff for the compactness of the setup!
Great setup! I have been using the Samsung T5 ssd, but have been looking for a more compact ssd setup for gimbal work. Gonna give this a try. I also use the voigtlander 35 f/2 and 40 1.2 with m to L mount adapters. The 12 but footage from the FP is spectacular!
Thanks, and love the lens choices! Recently they made a "lite" version of the SSD holder that is even more compact by eliminating the cold shoe mount. I am using that now, and liking it as much as the one in this video. Also just wanted to highlight that some of us experienced noise while recording with the Sabrent SSD. Troubleshoot is in the pinned comment in case similar happens to you.
Hey! I've been coming back to your family vlog and channel for years now! I'm going to be implementing the same setup! So i had a question for you. For focusing do you have a large depth of field and then move with the subject for maintaining focus?
Wow, thanks for sticking around! Basically yes, I tend to use F8-11 and auto ISO in the daytime. That will allow most subjects within the room's distance to stay in focus. At night I gotta lower it to F2-4 so the strategy would be to shoot more static shots.
2:45 I wonder why don’t you attach your Voigtlander viewfinder on this SSD rack in your video? Since this setup will make it much easier to take the viewfinder down
5:04 Apparently, the Crane M2 has a weight limit of 720g. Does it still work fine with 755g? What would you say is the actual limit? Have you tested any heavier lenses?
Mostly fine, but in Cine mode I sometimes face an error where the recording will stop after the first ~5 seconds. Not sure if it is due to the drive or the USB-C dongle but does mildly affect the workflow.
No I haven't, but probably the payload won't allow you to mount it on the camera body, so the likely scenario is to mount it on the side of the gimbal.
Did you ever have any issues with the SSD freezing? It only works for me on FHD, not UHD. Not sure if it makes a difference that I'm on the normal FP, not FP L.
Assuming that you are talking about this Dark Lab SSD setup specifically, I do sometimes experience a recording error-the recording would stop after few seconds in UHD. For me the issue occurs infrequently enough (maybe 1 in 10 recording or so) so not too critical, but not sure for others' cases.
@@be_shoichi You mean where on top, the black label with white letters and 2 blue stripes? I tried it but the chirpiness of my ssd didn't decrease much. Will these sounds go into the recording inside the camera?) To be honest I'm worried about it)
I directly access the focus ring if I need to - although I try to avoid that by using a higher aperture or keeping the distance with the subject static.
What a cool setup @@be_shoichi! Do you try to avoid focusing because it would interfere with the gimbal movements or is it because it would be hard to see on the display?
This thing is still making noise and I can't figure out how to solve this problem. The manufacturer sent me a box under the ssd 3 times andn. I already bought a stabilizer and lens, but I couldn't shoot because of this noise.
Sorry to hear that. One viewer was guessing that the noise is coming from the SSD and not the enclosure box. As far as my study goes, the sound can be prevented by two ways. 1) The hardware way. Physically change the pressure on the SSD. Some of us have found that removing the blue thermal pad inside the case would change the pressure against the SSD which results in less noise resonation. But there must be room for more experiments. 2) The software way. Change the recording setting. Say if you are recording in UHD 8-bit, try something else like FHD 12-bit just to see how the noise profile changes. Basically, different workloads create different patterns of currents passing the coil, and some settings might have significantly less noise resonation than others. If neither of above work, the last resort is to remove the noise in post. If you are using DaVinci, this is achievable by muting certain sound frequencies in the EQ tool. There are many RUclips tutorials on this as well. Anyhow, the moral of the story is that there isn't much support for these kind of enthusiast gadgets and hacks, so we need to understand the risk factors, and enjoy the ride :)
