This Superbowl win changed everything for Boston, in terms of sports. Until Superbowl XXXVI, the Patriots were the LEAST popular of Boston's sports teams and they were rumored to be on the move as recently as the mid 1990s. In addition, all four of Boston's teams failed to make the playoffs in 2000 and there was little hint that the Red Sox would win the World Series just two years later. What this Superbowl did was give hope to the city of Boston and to the region of New England. If the Patriots of all teams could win a championship, then surely the Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins could.
James Trout Yup! I was 14 and a huge Sox fan, liked the Pats but didn't follow them religiously. They captured my attention that year, boy. I remember the day after the Superbowl I realized what had happened and I shed a few tears. Even at my young age I had experienced a lifetime of disappointment with the Sox and watched the Patriots lose to GB when I was 10. I didn't think I'd ever see a championship in Boston.
One a the greatest games I ever saw ! Didn't hear Madden bc I was at the game but such a thrill watching the pats prove everyone wrong ! All the people we met at and before the game was once in a lifetime experience!! That's why they call it the superbowl !! RiP John we surely will miss you.
We have to keep in mind that Pat Summerall was one of those play-by-play broadcasters that believed that, on a TV broadcast, pictures told the story much more than commentators ever could. Just look at his calls on key plays in the Steelers wins in Super Bowls X and XIV in the 1970s. On the play that ended up giving the Steelers the lead for good in Super Bowl XIV, Summerall spoke a total of seven words ("deep for Stallworth" when the pass was thrown and "touchdown for the Steelers" when Stallworth caught it) and let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Quite a few broadcasters of Summerall's era were like that. Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola also believed that on television broadcasts, the pictures told most of the story, so much that Garagiola did not utter one word on the final pitches of both the 1980 and 1982 World Series, but before those pitches were thrown that the crowd would tell the audiences what happened, and in the final out of Nolan Ryan's fifth no-hitter, Garagiola said four words, which were "this may be it", and let the video and the crowd tell the rest of the story.
Everybody remembers Adam V. and TB12 , but who remembers how key J.R. Redmond was on this winning drive ? Being a Pats fan born and bred in Massachusetts, this was great to see again and never gets old , IMO .
Madden "I don't agree with what the Patriots are doing here, you have to play for overtime" Minutes later, " Now I kinda like what the Patriots are doing" Funny.

@@fredbrady3988 I’d say third greatest sports dynasty if we’re going by championships. Pats won 3 and then didn’t win one for 10 years I think and then won 3 again. The Yankees won 7 World Series in the 50s and 60s (I think it’s 7 my bad if it isn’t) and then you have the Bulls with both of their 3-Peats. I’d say second ahead of the Bulls but behind the Yankees
@@tylerfrancescone8683 Patriots dynasty is the best, and more impressive. No losing seasons in 20 years in a salary cap league, 9 superbowl appearances and 6 rings is miles more impressive than what the yankees did during their era. it's tougher to do what the pats did than the yanks
As a kid in STL watching this drive was the most painful experience as a sports fan, it was a tight game then it felt like they were just giving away every play with that prevent defense. My dad was so frustrated that we drove up to guitar center as the game was ending because we knew it was over and listened to them kick the game winning field goal in the parking lot. It was the end of what was supposed to be the STL rams dynasty and the beginning of the Patriots dynasty, brutal.
Pat Summerall's final Super Bowl call: "...and it's right down the pike... Adam Vinatieri... no time on the clock and the Patriots have won Super Bowl XXXVI... unbelievable!" Simple, direct and letting the pictures tell the story... Summerall was the voice of the NFL in an era when the league came of age.

I was at that game, all day long all you saw was Rams shirts... that night it was a sea of Red White and Blue celebrating the Patriots first Super Bowl of the beginning of the best Dynasty in Football history!!!!
Yea but it was all vinateiri. HAHAHA, I can't stand that argument. Brady was calm and controlled and drove his team into field goal range. That's what makes players great. Hoping he wins his 5th this year. Go pats!
People are still trying to say that, "Brady got bailed out by his kicker", as if the game (and the one against Carolina) wouldn't have just gone into overtime if the kick wasn't made. Or like Brady didn't drive the ball down the field for the kick to be possible.
JCBalance, Wilkins missed a 52 yard kick earlier in the game. Ty Law had a pick 6. Brady threw for 145 yards and 1 TD The tired Rams defense was playing a soft zone which allowed them to get into FG range, where in a dome is not far. It wasn't he got bailed out by the kicker. He is given too much credit for these wins.
Chris Holmes you obviously don't know football, because he spiked ball that stop the clock after that once the ball is snapped the clock will continue to run until a timeout is called (which both teams were out of) or the game just ends so basically once the field-goal was kicked the clock just ran out
I obviously don't know football, huh? Look bro I've been watching football games for 20+ yrs. He spiked the ball and that stopped the clock. And just because I didn't understand 1 small intricacy of the rules on a play that happened 14 years ago and you've got to make that judgment. I guess you like to make judgments and try to make other people on the internet look bad and don't have much better things to do in your spare time. Goodbye.
Why? So the Patriots could squib the kick and the Rams play hot potato with it for 5 seconds before the game ends? Even the refs would have said "The hell with that, game over."
After watching Super Bowl 51 I had to come bck and relieve this moment. Felt nostalgic after going into overtime just like how it would've been 15 years ago. #12 is the G.O.A.T.. #PATSNATION

Way to pick 'em, Bears. Here's hoping Trubisky pans out.
"I'll tell ya .. what tom brady just did gives me goose bumps" madden knew what he was witnessing .. the birth of a legend
summerall is so old by this point he thought that vinatieri missed the kick in the pregame footage they showed. he also didn't' even raise his voice as he kicked the game winning field goal. no wonder they ushered him into retirement pretty soon afterwards.
vesky82 lol
vesky82 yup
He was 3 sheets to the wind by that point, already..
He just hates the patriots like the rest of us
Some people actually liked that about his style
This Superbowl win changed everything for Boston, in terms of sports. Until Superbowl XXXVI, the Patriots were the LEAST popular of Boston's sports teams and they were rumored to be on the move as recently as the mid 1990s. In addition, all four of Boston's teams failed to make the playoffs in 2000 and there was little hint that the Red Sox would win the World Series just two years later. What this Superbowl did was give hope to the city of Boston and to the region of New England. If the Patriots of all teams could win a championship, then surely the Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins could.
James Trout It changed to fortunes of Boston sports but the Pats had been sold-out since 1994.
2011 was epic though.
Bledsoe made the Pats popular again
Yessir
What Tom Brady has done till 2019 gives me goose bumps.....Still tearing opposing defences and teams in 2019.....Let's Go.....Still Here....
What a drive. Great job by everyone.
One a the greatest games I ever saw ! Didn't hear Madden bc I was at the game but such a thrill watching the pats prove everyone wrong ! All the people we met at and before the game was once in a lifetime experience!! That's why they call it the superbowl !! RiP John we surely will miss you.
Hardly any excitement from the announcer after the game winning FG.
Pat Sumerall was a NFC fan. He hated the AFC.
Alan how come?
Yeah........."And it's right down the pipe" followed by 6 seconds of silence? What a cold plate of leftovers on that call.
Summerall sounded like he had a million dollars on the Rams and the bookie was waiting for him outside the stadium with a couple of goons
It’s the reason he only won one Super Bowl as a coach,
Sometimes I don’t think John Madden could be satisfied one way or another.
He's too obsessed with his undying love for Favre to think clearly.
dang , but i miss troy brown, one of the greatest.
Ned Kline
Ty made it into the hall, Seymour was a candidate! McGinnest! Bruschi! Wow
nah, he's just one of the many humps Brady made look elite
That includes Belichick by the way. Absolute hack.
Dude was the definition of a Patriot...
We were watching a legend appear before our eyes
This is CRAZY to watch in 2017... I remember seeing this on my friends TV when I was like 10 years old thinking I wanted Bledsoe to come back and be QB.
Madden: "They should play for overtime."
Brady: "No, I don't think I will."
Lmaoo😂😂
That drive by Brady was clutch as HELL
2019. Here we go again.
"What TOM BRADY keeps DOING, gives me GOOSE BUMPS "!!!
So long Tom, on behalf of Cowboys Nation, it sucked watching my team lose to you every time, but you are the GOAT. 🐐. I will never forget college age me watching this drive in real time thinking we’re watching history unfold before our eyes.
America’s team finally got him in his final game. Bittersweet!
@@moheganson of course it took him and his wife fighting like crazy and a garbage O line to do it lol.
The greatest announcing duo of all time calling the drive that started the legacy of the greatest QB of all time. Summerall and Madden will always be legends and class acts.
The most underrated part is the ref recovering the ball at 4:44 allowing Brady to quickly spike and stop the clock.
That's his job lol
@@anthonyhutchins2300 Not if the team in question is The Cowboys.
Brought tears to my eyes then and again today, 18 years later.
When the legend was born
I remember being a young kid in Boston while this was happening. Watching this I'm the kid I was back then...first time in life I ever lost my voice from screaming in victory. Burned my voice away with sheer force.
And of all the guys on that field, probably Brady is the only one still playing as of today. Amazing.
A LovedOne Adam Vinateri is still playing, and playing well.
Of all the players from the 2001 season in the ENTIRE league, how many are still playing? Is it just 1?
Life in the 413 brady and vinatieri
@@RichXM I knew I was forgetting something when I posted that. Duh!!!! 2. Now is it just 2?
@@kevaninthe4135 Drew Brees started in 2001
What John madden said about getting goosebumps just gave me goosebumps.
The beginning of the NFL's greatest dynasty
Sports’ greatest dynasty
Had to come back and appreciate the start of it.
Legends were born in this time span. The NFL would never be the same.
That was a great way for him to go out on a call like that. RIP Pat and John.
How nostalgic to hear these football greats having to talk up this new kid Tom Brady
Who knew on that fateful night what was going to come. A run that has never happened and will never happen again. Also Adam and Tom are still going at it, just amazing.
Feb.2nd.and the Chief's are trying to start their own dynasty...oh,yeah that's not for wins...but a loss after all the previous wins...hmmm... isn't that what Andy Reid retorted after losing at Arrowhead" yeah, give us credit for getting this far and making it to the final four"...yep,he'll get a lot of credit for keeping the Chief's legacy intact...after a loss...but what happens if they actually win the Superbowl...probably next yr.will be very difficult to repeat...that's a "cliff that Kellerman can explain...best Q.B.ever living now...just fell off the cliff with Kellerman...at least Mahomes will prove him right!!Kellerman is a "Clown",and the Chiefs still have the Kingdom Jinx!!Lol
that was 2002 i think.now its 2019 and tom is still here and going to another Bowl in5 days against the rams again..i wish my BRUINS hockey was this amazing.
Yeah being a Bruins and Celtics fan isn't as fun lol... they always get us so dang close and then break our hearts.
Anybody here because there's gonna be a rematch in SB LIII? Can't wait for the PATS to win their 6th.
I'm Japanese. This is the game I started watching NFL when I was 7years old. I became Rams fan I don't know why. Afterward, how many times I regret this choice lol.
DOESN'T EVEN COMPARE TO WHAT HE JUST DID TO THE FALCONS BABY WHOOOOOOO. Brady GOAT
Legend of Tom Brady began in this game here against St Louis Rams in 2001 Super Bowl
Legend of Tom Brady began in this game here against St Louis Rams in 2001 Super Bowl
Still remember this game as a kid watching on a floor TV with my dad holding up the antenna man I was 6 7 years old time flies
The beginning of Tom Brady’s legacy was also the end of Pat Summeralls legendary stint with John Madden!
NO. PAT SUMMERALL'S LEGACY WILL GO ON FOREVER. AND MADDEN'S TOO. 2 GREAT COMMENTATORS.
One was a drunk, the other is a fraud.
5:00 ❤. John at his best.
Brady: OT? FTS, I’ve got models waiting for me
I was at that game, all day long all you saw was Rams shirts... that night it was a sea of Red White and Blue celebrating the Patriots first Super Bowl of the beginning of the best Dynasty in Football history!!!!
Yea but it was all vinateiri. HAHAHA, I can't stand that argument. Brady was calm and controlled and drove his team into field goal range. That's what makes players great. Hoping he wins his 5th this year. Go pats!
Hope he wins #6 this year...!!!!!!!
Brady threw for 145 yards and 1 TD
The tired Rams defense was playing a soft zone which allowed them to get into FG range, where in a dome is not far.
It wasn't he got bailed out by the kicker. He is given too much credit for these wins.
“What Tom Brady just did gives me goosebumps” that line from Madden gives me goosebumps ...
John Madden: "play for overtime" 😂
I have been a Patriots fan for a long time. Every time I see a replay of that FG, it gives me tears.
5:36- Clock should have stopped at :02 after Vinatieri's FG went through.
Goodbye.
Chris Holmes I never said you didn't know anything about it what the fuck are you talking about
Why? So the Patriots could squib the kick and the Rams play hot potato with it for 5 seconds before the game ends? Even the refs would have said "The hell with that, game over."
Now now......boys! Silence!
Chris Holmes & Biohazard-42......no more coffee for you two. De-Caf only!!!
Rip John Madden. He called Brady’s first super bowl
That’s when the dynasty started. Go Pats !
After watching Super Bowl 51 I had to come bck and relieve this moment. Felt nostalgic after going into overtime just like how it would've been 15 years ago. #12 is the G.O.A.T.. #PATSNATION
That was a terrible call on the final couple plays by the broadcast team...
Brent Nichols madden tried but man youre right lol
Rams choked this one bad.
He let the moment do the talking. Like a professional.
I don't know...I think you just don't understand Pat Sumerall's style of commentary.
Only the best commentating combination in NFL history 🙄
Came here to listen to John Madden call this game. R.I.P🙏🏼
“I think the Patriots need to run the ball and play for OT”
-Typical John Madden commentary
“What Tom Brady just did gives me goosebumps.”
RIP John Madden.
Also, this drive taught us this lesson: DON'T Play Zone coverage against Tom Brady, unless you can pressure him with your linemen!
Every time I see this I get goosebumps. Every time.
