I completely sympathize with feeling the twist should have been cut.
Originally, I loved the twist. Now, I just kinda like it. It mostly provides fodder for my own imaginations of what happens after the ending, though. As it stands, the game doesn't go into the implications of what he and Basil have done enough to truly be worth it, at least not above what is brought to the table by NOT including the twist. I didn't use to think this, but the more and better criticism I see of it that isn't someone just mad because they don't like the main character now, the more I agree that it would be better at the least. Not that long ago I made a comment to someone saying the opposite, but since then after thinking about it, I feel like I'd have been just as enamored if it was about him overcoming his guilt for "causing" her death by not living up to her expectations. After all, the final boss and ending is what did it for me, and that would still work with it. And if that was the case, what are we left with? More people resonating the the game's entire story. Because I doubt anyone's love of this game hinges entirely upon the twist being exactly what it is.
Regardless, still love the game, but I get why, especially with it opening up plot holes, it's ruined by the twist for a lot of people.
EDIT: also I wonder if I only loved the twist because I actually guessed it early on, during the stairs sequence at the start, and the reveal section was a case of the game rubbing just how right I was in my face. I went through it going "Damn, I sure wish I wasn't right!"

I find it very hard to articulate my thoughs and even more so putting them into sentences so people would get them, but when I say this video explains in part why I also don't quite like omori as some of my friends it feels quite cathartic, so for that I thank you.
but also cant help but think that when someone mentions that omori its their absolute favorite game i cant help but feel that its just some sociopath with a "UwU" facemask.

    Cool video dude!
Honestly, you portrayed my main issue with the game well too. I absolutely hate this twist with Sunny pushing Mari bc it feels like "shock viewer" twist. And Basil hanging Mari? Wtf?
My main issue in story was Basil. He hanged Mari, and I goddamn not gonna believe that he did it only to protect Sunny from getting caught. Basil is definitely the most poorly written character in the game, yet biggest part of fandom love him and I... Can't understand why. He's so shallow. We doesn't know much about him. Honestly, in the other endings where Basil kills himself I felt nothing about him. I was like "well, he's dead:/ what next?"
And Aubrey is a bit of a problem too. I just don't care about her. I dunno why, I just can't feel anything about her? I don't dislike her like Basil, but meh.
It's also annoying how in the game gang don't care that Sunny who suffered the most by his sister's death. Bc lol, Aubrey talks how everyone left her and then there's Sunny who lost his older sisrer while Aubrey friend, it's just... I was frustrated bc it felt so unfair towards Sunny.
Hands down, my fav characters is Sunny, Kel and Hero. Bc we can feel them. We know them. Aubrey? Well, you can root for her too, there's a lot info about her making her look not so bad. But Basil? I don't like him.
I wasn't satisfied with ending at all. I also feel and think that Basil doesn't deserve all the love he gets from fans. Bc simply: if he just called ambulance or at least made Mari's death look like ACCIDENT, I wouldn't have been so angry at him. Just because how little we know about Basil i just... I can't believe he really did it. It just doesn't go well with his character. It's so confusing.
So yeah, I would definitely enjoy more if the game was, like you said, about "Mari commiting suicide and everyone moving one from it"
    Thank you for the video.

I agree with everything you said except that I prefer the Dreamworld because of the gameplay and the vibes. Everytime I went back to Real World, I was like "well it is time for rock, paper, scissors now". Indeed, I feel like the Real World didn't give what I wanted to have and was mostly to be annoying with interruptions. So I stayed on the sidequests because of that but it interrupts me even more lol.
That's why it would have been better if the two world overlap with each other with like hallucinations when it triggers the trauma like you said or to cut off the sections in Dreamworld to be less long (Humphrey hi I hate you). It isn't well balanced because the Dreamworld was created before the Real World and not at the same time iirc. I feel like the Real World is empty but big at the same. We almost don't know anything about the routine that the gang used to have or at least not enough.
For me, the problem is not the scenario but the storytelling. I am convinced that it should have been better if it was a comic not a game or at least a game in the style of To The Moon, highly similar in some points.

i'm someone who really liked omori and i agree with a lot of these points.
    - the real world combat system is indeed tedious and while the point is that you're supposed to be tired of it, it's still really boring and i honestly could've enjoyed the game a lot more if those battles just... didn't happen
    - speaking of this, sunny/the mc being punished for using a knife when aubrey has a nail bat and basil gouges his eye out with shears in the true ending is 100% inconsistent. they couldve just not had extreme violence in faraway town at all, idk what it contributes
    - it was definitely somewhat strange to make the twist that sunny commited manslaughter and that he and his friend framed it as a suicide. cutting this entire thing would probably only remove the entire basil emphasis throughout the game and a lot of the imagery (the hands which represents being "caught red handed" or sunny pushing her; this is probably also why you lose fingers while finding the truth)

    • @larubric
      @larubric  2 года назад +4

Thanks for the comment! That last point is definitely interesting. I think removing the 'twist' would certainly sideline Basil but, then again, removing the twist would require a great amount of rewriting considering how its supposedly hinted at throughout the game. As time has gone by, I'm unsure of how much I agree with my opinions on the story from July 2021 but I absolutely stand by the awful real-world combat (something that is bad by design is likely still bad) and dissonance in the effect weapons have (Aubrey hits us with a spiked bat and its no biggie, we slash at her with a knife and the game stops us).

this was very well-done and informative, and it's always nice to see other people having the same issues with a heavily-praised game that you have, so you don't feel like you're just completely alone in not sharing everyone else's blind enthusiasm
though my one criticism of this video is i really don't see how the whole sh0tacon thing matters at all, it wasn't relevant to the rest of the video, and even if the creator of something is into some freaky stuff, that doesn't really say anything about their morality as long as it's fictional and whatever

Hi Me! I felt that it was important to bring up the behaviour of Omocat for the benefit of possibly oblivious fans and also because I think how someone acts online regarding this situations, especially when responding to 'drama', is indicative of the kind of person they are. Hopefully Omocat has matured since then, it was almost ten years ago now, but I didn't feel right leaving it out. You are completely right though, the merits and shortcomings of the game are completely separate to that and while I believe it was necessary to bring up, perhaps it could have been done in a way that flowed better. Regardless, thank you very much for the support and I hope to see you around again!

hiya,, when I first read the title, I was.. intrigued more than anything. I love the game, however my main criticism was and still is how the dreamworld in the true route goes on for way too long. I feel like this could've been fixed by cutting that content down in the true route only, and have that extra headspace content in the hikikomori route.
what I disagree with has already been explained by other comments, so I won't repeat the same things again. I do agree that there should've been more irl content though.
reading through these comments... I find myself stuck. on one hand, I see how it could be a ''cheap'' twist just for the sake of it, but on the other, I see how that could be added there for extra discussion (about mistakes, immature lash outs with unfortunate consequences etc). I cannot for the life of me figure out which side I lean on more. so ugh lol. but thanks for making this video, as I think it's refreshing to see some criticism in the sea of so much praise. not saying the praise is not warranted, but with just praise and no criticism, there's no room to learn more about how to create good art.

Hey man! Thanks for the comment. As time goes on and we near almost a whole year since the video went up, I do find myself second-guessing my conclusions the more I watch back through playthroughs. Perhaps the ending really suffered inconvenient timing through the fact I had been streaming it for seven hours just to get it over with but at the same time it's on the game that it made me become so frustrated with it. It really is way too long at points without much intrigue or interesting motivation. I'm really happy that people from OMORI's community seemingly have engaged with what I said in such a forthcoming way such as comments like this!

@@larubric ((as a selfish side tangent, my comments on any videos usually get either ignored or y'know, just lost in the crowd, so I'm thankful for the reply))
a lot changes during a year, so I don't blame you. heck, I only recognized omori's flaws as a game months after playing it (played it first during summer). technically I knew before then, because I remember getting really frustrated with sweetheart's castle, but pushed through and ignored it.
thing is, I think most people (myself included) who liked omori could see themselves in Sunny - being depressed, broken relationships and whatnot. I really hope no one related to the actual truth situation lol. what related to me was the pure emotion this game is so good at portraying. but now that you mention it (without it being my own fleeting thought), yeah, why make the twist be that? kinda muddies the forgiveness message in a way, but then again, it was an accident. or maybe it was meant to make the player question it, idk.
i'm sure it's obvious from this chaotic tangent, but damn I am so conflicted.
another thing - I think those who want to ignore the flaws of omori or just don't care would bother watching. I'll admit I felt like an idiot for worshipping the game in a way after watching this, because holy (bad word) the twist flaw was so obvious. so, thanks again for the video

So in black space i think killing mewo was sunny blaming himself for mewo's death (thats the only thing i can think of.) Then when you get a finger cut off every time you pick up a photo, thats because of how painful it was and stressed he was playing the violin. The throne.. i don't really know about the theone but here are two theories
-omori being potrayed as an unstoppable god and making sunny seem pathetic.
-the hands being the people of the ones we killed (in or not in headspace) or **helped us do so**

As someone who loved this game and did cry at the end, I want to share my opinions on it.
First of all though, I want to address your point about combat in real world. Yes, it's not as exciting as Dreamworld combat. I don't think it's supposed to be. You're not in the imaginary land with special skills and random monsters, but in a real world scenario. It's just a bunch of kids punching and throwing balls at each other, it's not supposed to be as interesting as whatever happens in a dream. The combat was there just to make the real world seem hostile, things and people changed since Sunny was a child.
I didn't like the combat in real world either, but I got the intent of it, how it was supposed to make me and Sunny feel. There weren't enough encounters to bring the experience down either (well, killing flies for the supermarket job did get a bit annoying tho lol).
Also you brought up that Sunny cannot use a knife, since it's real world, but Aubrey fights with a bat with nails. Here's the thing though, there is the flavor text when an enemy attack and during her fights, it never mentions that she swings the bat at you. She "attacks", or she headbutts, or she spits at you. The "attacks" can be definitely interpret however you want, but I always thought that she just punched you. The bat there was to make her seem intimidating, she's not going around beating people with it. If you still intepret it differently, and think that she's using the bat during combat, that's fine. I really have no solid proof here, for either case.
Basil using a sharp weapon at the point where you fight him makes sense. He was literally about to kill himself with them. You both basically a had panic attack and just tried to get rid of each others' Somethings. He was not thinking clearly at that point.
You are of course free to dislike the combat, but I really wanted to clear these things up.
Okay, now about the plot twist.
I clearly felt different than you, because I never believed that Mari committed suicide. It was very clear to me, that there was much more to it then that. Mari never had any lines suggesting, she's troubled inside either. I really looked hard for them in the dream world dialogue with her, and whenever someone talked about her in real world, but there was nothing. For me, if the game suddenly said that she really committed suicide and was deeply troubled inside, that would be something that came out of nowhere.
There also were signs that she didn't commit suicide. First of all, how would you explain Basil's behaviour in your version of events? You can clearly see that he feels EXTREMELLY guilty about something, in basically every real world interaction. And you can see that he's somehow involved even in headspace, since finding him is the main objective. Deeper well and black space NPCs, pretty much directly say that he's involved and Omori removed him from the dream, because he's dangerous to Sunny's psyche.
Sunny didn't react during Kel's and Hero's scenes you mention in this video, because he doesn't remember himself. Omori and all of headspace, repress and hide those memories. He was so destroyed mentally by that accident, that his mind literally decided to ignore those events. This was the only way for him to escape his huge guilt. He just knew that Mari was dead, but he didn't remember he was the cause.
Sunny being the actual cause of Mari's death, made how he acts, how he feels and the mess you see in Black Space make so much sense. The extra guilt he must feel for lying to his friends. Especially to Hero, who blamed himself for Mari's death all this time. Making the character you play as be the direct culprit for everything bad that happened during the 4 years. It adds the extra punch to the story for me, and I really disagree it comes out of nowhere and doesn't tie in with things that come before.
One last thing, the ending scene. At first I felt very similar to you. I wasn't satisfied, I wanted to see the reaction from Kel, Aubrey and Hero and I wanted it to end on a definitely positive note. But after thinking over the ending for some time now, I think the way it ends is perfect. Sunny cannot influence how his friends will feel about what he did. Even if they do not forgive him (which I doubt), it is still a good ending for him. He is finally able to confront the past, admit to the things he did, take responsibility and move on. He is finally free. Even, if he loses friends, which would be a huge price to pay, he will be able to move forward with his life, hopefully to a better future.
Here are my opinions. I hope they will allow you to appreciate the story a bit more, but if not then that's completely fine too. I'm really glad there are people posting videos about things they do not like about popular games/movies/etc, being critical about art is always welcome in my opinion.
I'm not backreading this btw, it's too long, so I hope it's not a mess and you can still understand my points lol

Hello Gothic! Thank you very much for the eloquent reply, it's always great to see people engaging with what I say enough to leave a response like this. In all honesty, I made this video a WHILE back and I don't think I'd be capable of writing a complete and extensive retort because I haven't touched OMORI in almost a year now so details are all blurred out. Perhaps you're right, maybe I did overlook some aspects of the game that may have changed the tone of what Sunny did, but I really feel like OMORI was already on track to be a really great tale about mental health and then the true origins of Mari's death subverted the focus. I actually think if the player had known from the beginning about this, it would have come across more so that Sunny is suffering in silence during scenes with Kel and Hero rather than insidiously withholding the truth. Something just really didn't sit right with me about the ending following this, coupled with the dissonance in the weight of your actions in real world combat (again, you slash at Aubrey with an actual weapon and no reprisal comes from this), and I just can't personally say that OMORI got me at all by the end of it. I went to bed the night I finished it and kinda forgot about it completely.
Regardless of my personal opinion on the game, I really appreciate you taking the time to write this! Hopefully we'll both end up agreeing that OMOCAT's next piece of work is a masterpiece.

Truth to be told Basil already doesn't have such a big role. Like sure he's the driving force, but other than that what interesting thing does he have? Basil is mostly absent for the majority of the game, so we have limited interactions with him, plus he's also secondary to the whole truth shenanigans, which just obliterates all the "coolness" of the mystery surrounding him. So what does he have left?
PS: I don't know why it was so funny to me when you went "Aww, fuck you!"
