Comparing The Last of Us Part 2 to the new Star Wars trilogy is the most depressing thing I have ever heard
Indeed. One sentence saved me 70$.
Damn
“It’s like The Last Jedi”
Yikes.
“And Game of Thrones Season 8”
YIKES
That’s really really bad then
Last Jedi was poor storytelling that doomed the sequel franchise, but at least we have The EU. The sequels were shitty from the start so ok then
GoT season 8 was really poor storytelling that throws all the character development, and since the books aren’t finished yet, or maybe eve;ever this is currently the ending of GOT
And Batman V. Superman of contrivances and stupid reversals of character motivations. The story is god awful and people are really expressing that on release day with the full game on display through RUclips now.
" and like 2020".

Exactly. I'm amazed at the people trying to claim that volunteering their real names without a second thought was "in character." Would it have killed the writers for Abby just to know what Joel looks like from the hospital's security camera or something?
@@bigbuffguy9589 i'm not even sure writer did even think writing this sequel ... be careful tho fanboys incoming to justify the plot holes and the boring revenge story

“Revenge is a fools game.”-Arthur Morgan
“Revenge is a luxury we cannot afford”
👏👏
Read Dead mocks the idea of revenge and through the horrible, inevitable outcome, it shows that there is never any winning and there is no one who can grow from it. The Last of Us 2 seems to encourage it so that it can develop other characters upon the arrival of the revenge’s climax. It’s pathetic really.
"I like Golf" ~ Abby
I still miss Arthur til this day 😭
Last of us didn’t need a sequel, it needed a prequel. Plenty of story to be told in that 20 year time jump, Just saying.
No.
@@nosouponhead that would be interesting, the 20 year gap after Sarah’s death and boston. That would be better, the sequel somewhat tarnished the first game
@@kingsley2837 It would be too obvious. One of the joys of the first game is seeing what happened after 20 years of zombie outbreak. Having another generic zombie outbreak survival game would suck.
@@nosouponhead you do make a good point, still don’t think the first game needed a sequel been saying it for years.
@@nosouponhead well its better than a third game about Abby, who the fuck would want to see what happens after the second game? Many of them would be uninterested. Joel’s past is a better idea IMO, how he survived, how he and Tommy fell apart and became separated and how he met Tess etc, it would be better.
*Chad Joel:*
“He ain’t even hurt.”
*Virgin Joel:*
“Hi, my name’s Joel! This is my brother Tommy! My social security number is...”
...did you not experience Joel's arc?
His hospitality is part of his growth, throughout the course of the first game he grows to be more selfless and regains his humanity through his developing bond with Ellie and by the end of it he's a much more vulnerable and human character.
If he didn't have that bond with Ellie, if he stayed the same person he was in the beginning of Part 1, if he didn't open himself back up to the world and became a more empathetic person, he would not have trusted Abby for sure.
But, that's only if he would've gone through the effort of saving Ellie, and if he were the same unempathetic and grizzled old man he was in the beginning, he would not have gone through with emptying that hospital for her sake.
@@swag858 So the take out is that emotions and empathy are turning you into a fucking moron? Got it.
@@Alelogin You can't even ensure that your response is grammatically correct. You have no right calling someone a moron.
And uh, yeah, he doomed humanity, which is pretty fucking moronic if you ask me.
@@swag858 You mean he saved a teenage girl from being murdered without her consent? By terrorists who were not sure they could even make the vaccine? (Im not a native speaker so spare me your fucking bullshit, mistakes happen.)
@@Alelogin His motives were considerably more selfish than that, and in Part II they establish that Ellie would've been okay with it.
Him trusting people who seemingly aren't attempting to harm him does not make him a moron, he trusted Sam and Henry pretty damn quickly after all.
Guess Joel should just shoot every non-infected he sees like a boss 😎😎😎
I like how Skillup didn't break the NDA, but the entire review was just "look, I cannot confirm the leaks, *but* .."

They don't show Ellie die in the cutscenes, but the leaks imply that would happen, or at least set that up to be "about to happen" at the end of the game.
For a game-series where the writing is universaly praised, being compared to GoT Season 8 is fatal.

Calling The Last of Us a series is a bit of a stretch with the second game still waiting for launch. Either way your still right the sequel going to be a disappointment.
Clearly the original game was written more as a one and done game with great story rather than every expanding franchise that it's getting forced into.

At least it's not a bucket.
“The tone is suffocatingly bleak and never comes up for air” Could not have described my feelings more accurately.
And still, not the real problem. It the writing had been solid, and if it had been true to the characters, it doesn't matter how dark it got, it would never have been hated so much.
The worst thing about this game for me is how desparate the developers seemed to get an emotional reaction for the sake of it. Without spoiling the story, there's a couple of moments where the story is trying to twist an emotional dagger into you to make you feel sad or guilty for what's happened, but it's so unnecessary that it took me out of the experience and made me angry that the developers went to such lengths to try and make me feel depressed at the end of the experience.
*there're (the word "moments" is plural)
Can you tell which part you were talking about now ?
@@PixelPioneer23-q5p I'll give you a couple of examples, one for forcing positive emotion, and one for negative. The part with Abby's dad trying to rescue the animal, such an obvious forced ploy to make you try to see what a good guy he is, and what a good girl Abby is. Second, when Ellie kills the pregnant girl, that was to force the feeling of what a terrible thing Ellie has done, unforgivable. This game is heavy handed, and distasteful, there is no nuance. Many will say it's provocative and daring, yet I say that is such an easy thing to do. Think of the most shocking scenario, and put into an entertainment medium.

Comparisons with Disney Star Wars and GoT season 8...I'd like to report a murder here.
I know that was brutal as hell haha I loved it
It's a mix of The Last Jedi and GOT S08? OMG
I just recently found some people anonymously breaking the embargo conditions online. The leaks were 100% true. So yeah those comparisons work perfectly. Joel is getting the Luke Skywalker treatment, Ellie actually is like Daenerys in the dumbest way possible, the game absolutely revels in "subversion" and just dismantling everything it had set-up so far, it revels in the hope of pissing off its own fans, and it does it all whilst pretending to be deep. What's so stupid is the game even treats itself that way. The story ends with a giant "everything you did was for nothing" and I don't mean in like a deep, reflective way (I guess kind of like the way the first game ended), but rather in a nihilistic "we want you to piss away your time because we're so artsy" way. Oh and let's not forget all the really shallow, shoehorned political agenda-peddling that's in this game too.
Hahahaha
@@TheLastWanderingBard That's why there's so much confusion going around online. The gameplay looks amazing: the graphics, the sounds, the combat mechanics and how *violently* brutal it supposedly is, the facial animations both in cutscenes and when you kill people, the environmental designs, the sense of tension out in the world during exploration, the enemies. But that story. How can you create one of the arguably best-looking games on the PS4 but do THAT to the story? Why did Neil Druckmann have to make Anita Sarkeesian his role model? I mean, even the part in the leaks about Dina being pregnant was true, but Dina calls the kid Ellie's kid when the actual father (Jessie) literally sacrificed himself to save them. Tf even is this game??
I feel like we need a part 2 to this. There’s a lot more that could be discussed now that reviewers can...discuss it
No. This review pretty much summarized it already. It sucks
He denied the part 2 of this review because of the vitriol surrounding the game's release at the time. He hated the game and didn't want to be lumped in with some seemingly deplorable crowd. Everyone with a backbone was dumping on this game lol
I think YongYea's full review would sum up SkillUps full take quite nicely, give or take a few compliments Yong was able to give the game.
@@MrMoon36O everyone one with a backbone was dumping on this game? the common and safe opinion to have at that time, and even before the game came out due to leaks, was that it sucked - i don't you need a backbone to agree with the majority
@@joetaxpayer8180 There's a distinction to be made between a general audience and people regarded as critics. All the critics praised the game and gave it high ratings, praised the story for being brave and subversive. You know. It's customary when a game has LGBTQIA injected into the narrative somewhere. I commend the fewer number of critics that weren't afraid to dump on the game, like Skill Up and Angry Joe.

Sad ending with bleak story can still be great but only when the build up is done right. It's actually hard to write a story that TLOU2 is trying to be. Because if you just want the shock value and sad feels without trying to make the audience invested organically into the build up first, the audience won't feel genuine emotion from it. Pretty stupid isn’t it? Man, what were they thinking…
Not even Marlene some npc and they even changed his skin color kek
My biggest issue with the game was how halfway into the game you suddenly start playing as Abby.
I immediately understood what the game was trying to do, which was subsequently confirmed by further research.
Neil Druckmann wanted the player to empathize with Abby so that the weight of your actions as Ellie came heavily after everything you had to do to go after this girl.
Unfortunately, I hated it. Forming a bond with Abby at that point was nigh impossible after all that's happened in the first game with Joel and Ellie and the way Abby brutally murdered him for it.
I just couldn't give two shits about her or her friends at that point and wanted them all to die so that the story reached its conclusion.
IF, however, Neil Druckmann was a bit more clever about it; if he had made us play as Abby right from the start, concealing the fact that the person we are after for revenge is our loved and beloved Joel all the while we are playing as her, helping her succeed in her quest, only to reveal the shocking truth and the bloody murder of Joel at her hands at the end, AND THEN started playing as Ellie halfway through the game would have made this a dramatically better story.
1- That is one hell of a twist and a massive shock for the audience.
2- It would actually have achieved Neil's aim of bonding us with Abby so that our revenge run as Ellie felt heavier and more impactful.
It's not a bad game or a story per se, but I just felt disappointed with the way everything went down somehow.
Can't help but feel the above solution would have made this a dramatically better narrative.
Totally agree- playing Abby first and not knowing about her would have been a significant improvement!
Fair and respectful point. But I think that would have given the game a specific angle adjacent to the one we do get. That angle is partly what you get with Ellie, and already got as Joel in the first game. You start with sympathy, etc.
Knowing who Abby is theoretically shouldn't make a difference in the world because all the survivors have descended into chaos as people and as a society. Abby is really no different than Joel. Joel killing Abby's dad makes him the villain to Abby. And I think the point is to realize Abby's humanity as you play her. It goes on for a long time because it is something they anticipated would take a long time to come to grips with. And through that play you also see how Ellie's killing of Abby's clan just compounds her pain and rage.
In the end I dont love the character of Abby like I do Ellie and Joel. But I sure learned to sympathize and empathize with her. But I also can see why that would be a hard thing to do for others.
If you haven't already, check out Dunkeys review. It's actually a good counterpoint to this one.
@@raggarex I forgot that I'm on the internet for a second, reading what turned out to be a fair and reasoned counterpoint to my perspective, rather than flaming and petty insults.
Thanks for that! :)
@@ChristianNelsonn Well, I felt the same about your comment. I hope what I said made sense.
The vitriolic reaction so many have had to a game that tries to get players to experience empathy in uncomfortable ways makes it a good example of how important stories like this are in helping people see a better way to live life. But video games also have the potential to transcend what novels and films can do by letting the player become the character or characters, themselves. Being able to actually control the character just brings the experience home in such a unique way.
Cheers!
Never thought about this, but I actually agree with you that that might have been the better option. Abby and her friends needed time to sit in the minds of gamers, and this way would have provided it. Neil underestimated the bond players had with Joel from the first game. To kill him (especially like that) and place us in the shoes of the one who did it…most people wouldn’t be able to empathize

@@samirrezzak1543 The lesson was that Joel's choice in the first game was selfish and it came back to bite him in the ass. But even so, the way the sequel goes about it feels pretentious and sloppy. And the lack of gameplay improvements makes it even worse.
@@dixonb.tweenerlegs4225 Joel's choice in the first game is not black and white "selfish" and can easily be argued to be anything of the sort. Still, the sequel should never have been based on that choice. The sequel should have simply been a continuation of Joel and Ellie navigating this world. There are hundreds of stories they could have created in this world. A revenge story based on a character death from the first game is as LAZY as it gets. Especially when that revenge is being carried out by a character no when gives a shit about in the first place.
@@Entreped I mean...nah. It was selfish to push the fate of humanity to the wayside to save a kid you just met. He put the future of the world in trouble. Yeah, he became attached to her, but you have to really consider the weight of his decision. It was selfish and it would be expected to be addressed in the second game, but not in the form of a generic revenge story that happens to be about Brock Lesnar with a wig and homophobia. The idea that Joel has to deal with consequences is good, but the way the game handles it is sloppy and try hard.
@@dixonb.tweenerlegs4225
I never came away from the first game thinking that Joel's decision was selfish. In fact, I agreed with his decision wholeheartedly. There was no guarantee that the operation and research would have ended in a successful treatment, much less a cure. In all likelihood, Ellie would have died and the operation would have still failed like it had many times prior to their arrival. lol. that's what made it so great about the story in the first one. Joel's affection for ellie as his daughter and everyone talks about ellie being special but she wasn't special because she was immune. she was special because someone truly cared for her to the point of dooming the only chance to give humanity a chance for a cure. a happy bittersweet ending. this sequel was unneeded to an otherwise good game.
The idea of synthesising a cure from Ellie is nonsense. There is no way to mass produce a vaccine in the last of us. There are no working factories. There is no industry anymore. It would have never worked. Not only that how are they supposed to distribute it across the country? Not only would it not have worked Ellie would have died also. But at this point Joel probably should have let her die for nothing anyway. I’d also like to note the vaccine is more than likely useless for the majority of people who have been infected for a long time and fully transformed.

A lot of the roles that Bruce Straley and Neil Druckman had overlapped they said it themselves in a 2013 Empire Review and further emphasized it in their 2014 reddit ama. Troy Baker took a different approach and made Joel care about Tess, but not really show it and thats what stuck. Another thing Neil Druckman planned for the first game was to have Tess go hunting Joel cross country because Joel betrayed her in some way. A completely shallow "revenge is bad, you know" story.
Which kicks off around a character everyone hates getting revenge and then being the better off for it versus Ellie who is left with even less than what she started with.
Revenge stories can be done really well if done right, New Vegas when you’re shot in the head, robbed and left for dead just trying to do your job it makes you want to find that punk ass bitch that shot you with a 9mm. When I first got to the casino to confront Benny I had my big guns ready, all saved up, grenades and flamethrower a blazing in my black combat armor I melted everyone in the casino including that prick. It was incredibly satisfying and I’ll never forget it, denying the player that revenge is not the point of a game, it may make you think more but your certainly not going to be as satisfied as letting emotion take over and dealing with the consequences of your choices.
@@reggiewatts7728 I didn't feel the same way with Fallout new Vegas. I didn't really care about revenge. Which is weird because I usually RP, although maybe that's partly why. Loved the gameplay of part 2. Fucking HATED the story. For about the last 10 hours or so I was just miserable playing it, fucking hated playing as Abby, and honestly at one point Ellie was starting to become unenjoyable as well. I loved the gameplay but holy shit the story got to the point where I just wanted to turn it off, because I honestly feel with how Druckmann treated these characters and story that everybody loved so much, he didn’t earn my time with this game. He sacrificed character and emotion in genuinely good and down to earth story telling, for pretentious attempts at teaching some sort of half baked and unearned lessons to the player for just wanting to play the game and see these characters treated well. It was just depressing. By the time the Santa Barbara section hit, I was so irritated and just annoyed with this terrible fucking story that I just speed ran it. By the last 10 hours of the game, I just didn’t care anymore. With the first game, I cared about these characters the whole way through, and I cared for the relationship and retribution that they felt between each other. How could they just decide to throw that away, throw everything away, and just genuinely carelessly handle them. I played part 2 with a couple of friends and we genuinely had to pass the controller to even be able to enjoy it. It was a fun game when I was playing it with them, because we couldn’t take it seriously, I think because we all refused to since we all loved the first game and started to hate part 2. But when the credits rolled, all three of us just sat in silence for a couple of minutes, saddened, distraught, confused, frustrated, and disappointed. Then we all shared our thoughts, and for every positive we had, there were about 3 or 4 negatives.

I honestly believe that the story js a shitshow from what we were able to gather so far, but in defense of Sony and Naughty Dog, that's pretty much a common practice to not reveal inportant plot point in reviews. The game releases on June 19th, nobody wants to have a game publicly spoiled by reviewers, and that applies to all games. Of course, TLOU2 got spoiled but it was a failure on the dev part in regards to their security, but reviewers are generally under NDAs that prevent them from spoiling a game in their reviews. Pre-release reviews are meant to give an overall assessment of the game without revealing crucial story moments. After the game releases, everyone is free to make an in-depth review covering everything in detail.
The conversation around and about the game is what turned me off getting it. It is just so hate fuelled and aggressive, on both sides.
This is an opinion that I can respect though I disagree, in the sense that your argument is well-structured. I disagree with a lot of your subjective assessment of the characters and the tone, though - but as I said that's subjective. I actually found the game to be more uplifting than the first game. The first game has more moment-to-moment levity but the implications of the ending are quite dark and leave the characters in a bad place. The second game has a darker moment-to-moment tone but at the end of the game, the surviving characters pretty much all wind up in a better place than when they started, at least in terms of their emotional relationship to the world.
"When you're lost in the darkness, look to the light" is a message to the player as much as anything - it's saying, "hey, this story is outwardly brutal and depressing, but at its core is a celebration of the human spirit and overcoming our worst enemy - which is usually ourselves."
Anyway, despite my disagreement I still thought you did a good job reviewing it and I subbed.
Agreed!
Have faith, my son. The disappointment brought by this game will provide the perfect distraction for us to slip away to Tahiti. By the time all the leaks are confirmed and everyone regrets there ever being a sequel, we will be living large at paradise.

What I thought this story was gonna be about: "Okay, so my prediction is that the consequence of saving Ellie will be that countless more infected will arise and, maybe, Ellie will find out she isn't fully immune and that the virus was slow acting but still active the entire time. Joel and Ellie will eventually have a falling out and Joel will do everything he can to prevent Ellie from succumbing to the virus."
My reaction to the actual story: "Bruh"
I honestly feel like this could have taken an interesting turn narrative wise. Joel put so much on the line to help Ellie and ultimately earn a second chance at being a father, and this kind of story could reassert the harsh reality of this world they live in, and that it does not allow for fantasies like this. Joel would end up desperately trying to come up with a cure, the same cure that he COULD have helped to create but instead denied to the world, while dealing with the horrors that would come of Ellie's rapidly progressing infection. And on top of it all, Ellie might discover what really happened with the Fireflies, and leave Joel behind to dwell on his guilt as she contemplates her fate.
Damn, that's good. You've pretty much summed up my expectations for this game. I wish so bad that we got the game you just described.

Most awards won by a video game ever - prompting people to think awards shows are developer/industry circle jerks.
Do people still wonder why gamers distrust video game journalists and reviewers?
it also won a shit ton of user awards.
@@lmcfigs4874 this
It won plenty of user awards too. Haters just scream louder than fans and think they're the majority lol
Actually it made me distrust Metacritic once I saw how easily manipulated the score of a video game was before they could have possibly played it.
ALSO won a shit ton of WORST of awards, metacritic user score speaks to how it was really accepted and they had to try to censor that score and the story line on release, piles of the game still sealed , so many returns stores stopped accepting them LOL trash🗑

Atleast thrones never tried ramming a libtard agenda down my throat and didn't contrive the entire show around an agenda
@@13_faces I thought they did lol? All the women in the show are fucking strong and telling the men to shut up. They are also all angry, Deanyrys (or however you spell that white haired girls name) was fucking angry in the later episodes from what I've seen. I never really watched the show closely but I did see the first couple seasons and I stopped right around the time when that shit went liberal. I'm not sure how movie and game writers think its realistic for a highly rough and dangerous environment like the one in GoT or TLOU would facilitate strong and empowered women taking center stage. Not to sound like an absolute sexist but I know for a fact that any woman that would attempt this would get absolutely curb stomped and worse.. That's not me venting angry dribble, you can observe more backwards countries in the world right now to witness this phenomena first hand. Women have absolute nothing to say on the matter and they all fall in line pretty quick. The rare vocal one better have something to back it up with like being related to an even more powerful man because if she isn't, well just imagine every possibility going through your head right now. All of them would happen. It's just not realistic and just because our messed up society has progressed to give women great amounts of freedom, appreciation and respect doesn't mean other societies would do so. Especially those more geared toward basic survival rather than prosperity. Sometimes it feels like the people making these shows and games have very little real life experience. Because it seems so obvious to the normal everyday man and woman out there but they struggle to get it.

Do you guys get looked at funny by the general public outside the internet when you discuss the evils of SJW influences while in line at Chipotle?
Wait, who am I kidding. You people don't go to restaurants with other people.
Sony: you can review the game, but you can't talk about the parts that we know will piss people off
Utill you give us $60
This has nothing to do with sony, companies dont want stuff spoiled that's that, has nothing to so with TLOU or naughty dog or Sony
Chewjacka people have a vendetta against this game. Look at the leaks and you’d understand why
Chewjacka has nothing to do with Sony or naughty dog? Haha ok.
@@theshoronatheshorona8282 or 230. Luckily i canceled my preorder. But according to Sony leaks changed nothing to preorders lmao, that's probably why it was back on stock on amazon lol
Imagine a really attractive girl who turns out to be a preachy fundamentalist religious person.
You make it sound like hot religious women don't exist and that there's no market for that. Fundamentalists tyoically love sex as well, they just want it private and with their spouse.
something trump would say at a maga rally
...ok done. What do I do now? I'm pitching a huge tent
Gameplay was fun, graphics were great, but the story was just so so so so bad on so many levels. If you could skip all the cut scenes then the game may be ok, but you can't. It felt like a teenage girl wrote this. The human nature realism so accurately portrayed in the first one is totally missing in this one
It felt like it was written by Netflix 😂
The fact that he showed a close up of Daenerys Targaryen when talking about Ellie, shows shes going to be a disconnected villain.
Who's that?
@@almutairi201 Daenerys is a major character in Game of Thrones who the writers built up to be more just and sane than she was in the books, only to do a 180 and make her go nuts and mass-murdery in the last few episodes. It was a character whiplash.
@@RanMouri82 Yup she was never a good person but the show tried to make her so only to dial it completely back in order to subvert expectations
I mean the game TRIES to do that but it fails miserably. The whole message of the game is supposed to be "revenge is wrong". So deep I know. Abby kills Joel for revenge, so Ellie goes on a rampage and brutally murders hundreds of people along the way to kill Abby, then realizes how wrong it all is. It tries to be deep with the whole "if you want revenge, dig two graves" idea, but the writing just isn't smart enough to pull it off.
If you ask me the Red Dead Redemption series does a 100% much better job at depicting the cycle of revenge and its consequences. That Neil could have ever hoped for, sad Dan houser left Rockstar though.
They literally forbidden to talk about other half of the game, can't make this shit up.
It's not like we don't know lmao, sony couldn't hide the leaks we know the game goes south.
@@98Dreadboy After watching IGN's review give this game a 10/10 and feeling like an alien, I feel so at home here with you guys. No homo.
This is normal for review copies prior to the release of the game though albeit its probably more strict in this case considering all the crap that went down with the leaks. However it doesn't even really save the damage that was already done lol
Maybe too early to judge I think ill spend 60 dollars on Jedi fallen order rather than this

Damn bro.
TLOU2 also have good quotes:
"The sequel was not as good".
"Better than getting drunk and watch anime" :v
Liberty Prime I’d say those flashbacks with Joel were the “light” in the game.
@@IngvarMar those were very tiny sparks on a very dark tale. on the first one you had ellie's attitude, joel & ellie talking, joel's friend, the brothers, the giraffe encounter. even the part with Abby before everything happened, is happy but is not about making the player happy is just to add darkness to the events.
honestly when i heard the quote in the game, i put on my best Nathan Drake voice and said: i'm blind here naughty dog.

See that's really corny. The story never was that special or original . It's just now they didn't even try with it's sequel that didn't need to be made, except the first one was too successful not to make another one. So Naught Dog just threw in some empowered SJW agenda story and slapped it together with some gameplay and cashed in the checks. Pretty much just like every Hollywood Movie sequel.
Regardless of your opinion of the game, if there are restrictions for making the points you want to make or showing examples of things vaguely talked about, DONT MAKE A REVIEW (yet). I don't think its that large of a loss to release the video after the embargo is up. It frustrates me because while I disagree with a lot of his opinions, I'm unable to specifically, in my mind or in the comments, disagree with something tangible. Instead I'm stuck with "the story has plot holes" to which I respond "no it doesn't." Theres no conversation to be had with such vague statements. Not to say that was the intention because I don't believe that to be true. I just think the tiny loss of viewers due to not being at the very height of the game's hype, is worth losing to present a detailed arguement ready to be discussed.
Imagine creating a “revenge is bad” story with a main character so unlikeable it convinces the audience that revenge is really good.
