Hey bud real good talk, applies to Australia just as much as NZ
The only beef i have as an owner driver, with some of the foreign drivers they seem to bring a few of there third world standards with them especially regarding rates.
A lot of the standards we have in the industry now have been hard won over the last 30 years and it would be shit if that went out the window.
But that really gets back to training as you were saying, communication is the key not alienation.

I couldn’t agree more mate. I was an OD for Mainfreight for a number of years and I left because they were pushing us to replace perfectly good trucks while screwing down rates and the guys coming in were all happy to work for next to nothing so I left them to it. It’s a real shame what’s happened to our industry. Too many operators are happy to cut the guts out of rates to get work and then struggle on by cutting corners and breaking laws to get by

as long you keep on trucking bro choice and having the split camera that's choice I got a lot of respect for trucking especially they try to trun in to something and no one let's him or her I flash the lights and back off so the cars behind back off then I get the wave back that makes my day

Labour shortage is effecting all industries and I think you hit the nail on the head with the lack of training……and by that I mean on-site apprenticeship type of training, “health and safety” has a big part to play here as a lot of this type of training in the past happened when you went to work with your parents, rode in trucks with your uncle’s, when you’re young you soak up these experiences like a sponge and subconsciously learn the trade.
Also, remember people are out there trying to make a living and we all need to start somewhere and if we want to have good young experienced drivers, companies need to start thinking a bit more old school….part with some $$ get some kids riding around in trucks after school on weekends, learning how to do a pre trip, load, secure the load, wash trucks, if you can’t get kids because of H&S see your forkies, a lot of these guys have potential and if they are already loading trucks they already have a few boxes ticked off.
It’s a big investment but so is sponsoring immigrants that may have bad habits, unaware of the driving culture(nz drivers can be shockers also) or simple communication issues

Well said. I was fortunate enough to learn good driving habits from my uncle (owner/operator truckie) and my father (motor racing) but many don’t have that unfortunately. And yes, the general standard of driving in this country is actually appalling. A terrible combination of ignorance and arrogance. I have a dash cam compilation vid on the horizon to back this up

You know what trick, I reckon you should stick to driving. Your going to be one of those legendary drivers that the next generation of drivers look upto.

Had a cowboy tailgate me coming back from Turangi. I let him pass, but should never had called me an idiot over the CB for driving safe. Anyway, why speed cos eventually eventually I caught him at Tokoroa truck stop. He saw me pull up, shit himself and pissed off lol. I just wanted to chat lol....#SamoanTrucker #Slapfirsttalklater
