Not really. I mean it's a fools errand trying to make a new BR these days. It's not going to happen. But PlayStation literally had Helldivers 2 become a massive success this year despite people insisting nonstop that it's impossible to make a new successful live service title "because they suck up all your time and you won't play anything else". That's just not true.
@@wanderingwobb6300 it requires insurmountable luck and innovation. Helldiver's wccomplished that with unique shooting mechanics, a campy goodness and humorous style of storytelling.

I worked with Certain Affinity through a contractor doing QA on the Halo BR. It really wasn't working as they claimed it was. There was a general lack of direction for building the world. It mostly functioned correctly but much of the design was unintuitive, especially regarding verticality. You had all kinds of tools, vehicles, and actual level design encouraging you to play vertically in a major way. The only problem with that is the fact that the designers discouraged vertical gameplay every chance they could, putting game boundaries all over the place. Some of them gave you a short timer to 'return to the game area' while others would outright kill you. At one point I launched off a gravity ramp built into the level's architecture only to receive a warning to return. There were areas in which you could obtain a flying vehicle and hit the airspace ceiling with less than 3 seconds of ascending. There was a mountain near the center of the island that was hollowed out and had a facility built into it, a monolithic multi-level complex with elevators large enough for tanks and a gigantic hole out of the top, but the top half of it was covered in a kill box. There were a handful of great ideas but all of it was cobbled together by a terrible execution in a buggy engine led by people who couldn't decide on a design direction and had their minds closed off to any feedback that didn't jerk them off.
If this is really how it was going then the guy quoted in the video seems like one of those bury-your-head-in-the-sand and believe everything's fine kind of guys, who still can't work out what went wrong when everything falls apart. Blinkered positivity can be just as destructive as negativity.
Do you think that if the game shifts to unreal along with other Halo projects, and management can pull their heads out of their arses and allow for fixes to those design flaws, that the game would end up being good?

"Ronald D. Moore" I love how you referenced him and didn't state his biggest shows: Star Trek TNG, DS9, VOY and Battlestar Galactica! One of the greatest science-fiction TV producers of all time.
I think it's more likely that he just listed his most current shows he's worked on. You wouldn't go into a job interview and tell them about how you lemon stand when you were a kid was the most successful on the block

A CHALLENGING PRECISION PLATFORMER ABOUT BEING A DEAD SOCCER PLAYER AND HAVING TO DRIBBLE AND KICK A SOCCOR BALL UPWARDS THROUGH THE LAYERS OF HELL FOR A CHANCE OF REDEMPTION????? What will they think of next
Hey Skill Up, first I want to say thank you for the updates in gaming news, I tune in weekly to hear from you about the industry I enjoy so much. Your upbeat additude is a big part of what keeps me coming back each week and helps me get through the first quarter of work that much easier. I do have a question for you though and was hoping you could do an update video on it. What happened to Vampire the Masquerade 2? It was supposed to launch ages ago and I haven't heard hide nor hair of it since. Along with this I'm sure there're many other games that where supposed to launch but haven't for some reason or another like the KOTOR remake. Would love to see a video on an update of games that are well past their planned release dates. (Hoping your sources can give you the inside scoop)
Not covered here, but last week a small Indie game named Drova was released. It was often compared as a 2D Gothic and having played it, I think it is a good pickup for everyone who liked those old games. It can be a hit or miss depending on how much fun you have with exploring as it's not holding you by your hand at all, making exploration really special, but it also means you can spend hours trying to find the last piece to an amulet with only very vague references of where it could be.
Actually, most people DO like LIS: Double Exposure (80% positive right now on steam). There is a very vocal crowd about one particular part of the story (which happened off-screen and only was mentioned within the game), but they aren't in any way, shape or form a majority of the players who have actually played that stuff at this point.
I CANNOT BELIEVE you didn't mention the release of Wayfinder 1.0 this monday Oct 21st!!! The story of that game turnaround is a testament to the Dev team dedication, passion for their project, loyalty by (and for) its community, and a shinning example of "what could have been" for other games like Concord, and even Anthem! Honestly, game is like 30 bucks now but feels like a million dollars. WAY better than most full price games... I DO recommend it! 😃 Also, did anyone else noticed that he had to read the "Ascending Inferno" intro twice?... 😅
My friend was streaming Mech Warrior Clans and we all agreed they have strangely uncanny animations for mouths during cutscenes, and they are all awkwardly large. We have since been calling it "Mouth Warrior Clans" game still seems fun but according ti my friend its a lot more on rails than they were expecting
Not going to lie seeing that new three person shooter from remedy just makes me feel like every other coop game that's coming out nowadays. Costumes, somewhat silliness despite the lore, fast pased combat, etc.Etc Its all feeling repetitive.
21:57 Mech warrio… 😂 honestly I genuinely appreciate your ability to just chuck spaghetti at the wall and see if it sticks Skill Up, keep those terrible jokes coming.
Ubisoft out here with 300iq moves. Killing the best two games they've made in a decade. I don't like the cartoony art style of Immortals, and aren't typically a huge fan of side-scrollers... but Immortals and The Lost Crown were amazing.
Also, shout out to Wayfinder from Airship Syndicate hitting its 1.0 re-release earlier this week! Wayfinder's history is an interesting part of the history of live-service games in the industry, and it's going to be a game to watch as it continues to expand now that it's officially back at 1.0.
The ex-Playstation CEO's comments were really interesting. With Sony and Microsoft pivoting into live service it makes sense that they would be struggling. Instead of just investing in their ecosystem and driving console sales they are trying to cash in on their ecosystem. So instead of growing the pie they're trying to cut themselves a slice. Can't have your pie and eat it too I guess.
I think he made an error and wanted to say something in case others were confused. He said the Deluxe Edition of AC Shadows is going down from $280 to $230. But that was actually the Collectors Edition per an article I just read. I hope it helps.
I have some advice to companies making multiplayer shooters, hoping to break into the market: do NOT make them look like Fortnite or Overwatch. Setting yourself up for instant failure. I don’t understand how this is not obvious.
@@ResandOuies Right, but that’s exactly why they have to do something different. Make something same or similar in look and feel and players will just stay where they are. Happened to Concord. It was just too samey. Did not feel or look new or interesting.
They think they're pre-Activision Blizzard: take ideas of games that are good, polish the crap out of them, release a great game. I really feel old now.
On Concord. If I remember right a similar situation happened w/ one of the WB movie projects that got shelved. People had contracts in place where they had to finish editing the movie even tho everyone knew the project would be going into the trash the moment everyone was done working on it. Legally they had to finish making the movie even if it wasn't moving on to distribution.
Yo, SkillUp (and everyone else reading this, really), I can't emphasize enough how Slay the Princess is absolutely, 100% worth your time. It's fantastic and still pretty short, so, you know, maybe go for it.
The only way I can see the Until Dawn movie succeeding is if they do what the Clue movie did and release multiple versions of it in theaters with different endings.
20:03 This is one to keep an eye on, the developers previously made Jotun, which is a severely underrated boss rush game. I'm glad to see they're making another isometric action game.
About Fullbright: the team that worked on Open Roads split from Fullbright and finished the game under the name "Open Roads Team", this new release is the OG Fullbright (and it's a solo developer now).
So annoying to hear about rumors of shitty games maybe coming back but when gems get released or vaulted up to #1 on steam like Factorio dlc there's not a single word about it
Finding out Ubisoft has that many AC games in development is like when you find out how many unresolved conflicts the US is in.. how can it be THAT much
They have so many AC games that it becomes clear that if there are too many Prince of Persia games, it might impact sales of other Prince of Persia games. Corporate logic.
EA forgetting how to make a good plants vs zombies game without its original creator It’s incredible they’re still going with overhauling the game when they’ve failed at least twice now Command and conquer never got this much commitment
Let Remedy cook. Their single player games don’t really turn big profits, AW2 still hasn’t turned a profit. Let them have a fun multiplayer shooter that’s fun for fans of the franchise and new fans that will draw them into the Remedyverse. It doesn’t always have to be doom and gloom
I'd definitely give it a try if it was F2P. 40 dollars for what they were offering at launch was (you can buy helldivers 2 for that price) a huge turnoff. I'm not opposed to spending money on a new live service if the game has a good start, but Concord missed the mark on that front. It did seem like a really fun game at its core though despite its issues, and something I would definitely check out if I had the chance. People are incredibly biased against it and I imagine that nothing will be able to undo that, but you never know. Hope it pans out for the developers.
We found a rare! Mark this day. We found one of the "MoDeRn AuDiEnCe" that played Concord. Oh...wait...they didn't buy it. Dammit! They're out there somewhere!
Please use RUclips’s chapters features. This may have been asked before but your videos would be really good with it so I can find what I’m looking for in the video.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is soooo painfully underrated. If you like the genre at all there’s a lot to enjoy here. It’s perfect as a switch game too. Edit: hearing the team got split up isn’t that shocking, I don’t think the word ever got around how truly great it was and it didn’t sell.

@@factotumsyeah, I went from “Hell yeah Control 2 baby!” To “Oh ffs another live service?!!” in a matter of seconds.
Very disappointing, but I guess that live service money is just too attractive, even to Remedy.
@@michaelplatt1959 I know. I haven't had this type of excitement whiplash since I heard about Suicide Squad.
I bought Alan Wake 2, even knowing I wouldn't have time to play it, and considered writing it off as charity when doing my taxes because I just want Remedy to succeed.
I just really want a Control 2.
@@michaelplatt1959this is a good thing for Remedy. Their games don’t turn a lot of profit and are regarded as niche while being some of the best in the industry.
Alan Wake 2 still hasn’t made a profit. This will be their first independently published game so they make all the profit.
Rockstar can make the games they do and take the time they need because of GTAO.
In Remedy’s case, if those does well, it can help fund their big picture projects that push the industry forward
@@factotums I dont think it is a live service game tbh, they mentioned somewhere its just a normal game with DLC
What? not even a word on the release of the BEST dlc of the year "Space Age" for Factorio? and also no little shoutout for Wayfinder who finally managed to release in 1.0 this week? I'm sad...
Currently sitting at #3 on top Steam sales and not even a mention...
@@VanillaVercetti To be fair, he did mention the expansion when it was initially announced but there's no reason why it wouldn't get a shout out now.
Bruh this dude’s brain is FRIED. He’s probably on week 3-4 of nonstop reviews, podcasting and interviews with people in the industry, international travel, and producing a weekly news video.
Maybe he snubbed Factorio, or homie is literally just cooked right now lol October is busy month in many industries
"Ronald D. Moore"
I love how you referenced him and didn't state his biggest shows: Star Trek TNG, DS9, VOY and Battlestar Galactica! One of the greatest science-fiction TV producers of all time.
Yeah, that’s what he’s well known for. I was surprised there, too. I guess Skill up isn’t a big sci-fi fan.
I had to do a double take, because if Ronald D. Moore is now in charge of the GoW series, we just hit the jackpot.
I think it's more likely that he just listed his most current shows he's worked on. You wouldn't go into a job interview and tell them about how you lemon stand when you were a kid was the most successful on the block
You did not just compare Battlestar Galactica to a lemonade stand.
I have a sneaking suspicion you don't actually 'love' how he did that
Actually happy I got to hear a glimpse of how Skill up will do a re read if he doesn’t like his take / mess up 29:40
Sakurai pulling a Nikocado Avocado level move. He's always three steps ahead.
The greatest trick the Sakurai ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't make more games.
This is the best video game industry news show. It’s literally must watch for me every week. Thank you to the team for a consistently great show!
So many CEOs for the last 10ish years don't seem to have a clue. Many were given the reins after more successful ones moved on. "Failed? No, we just have to double down and it will be a success. Keep making the same things and they will sure to be a hit! Fire half the staff so our numbers look good though."
Edit: Case in point just a minute or so later of my watching. New multiplayer shooter looks like just much of the same garbage.
I would say Ronald D Moore is best remembered for Battlestar Galactica and his work on Star Trek.
me too, but you are I are old. Those are from 20, 30+ years ago

The idea of Concord returning is hilarious. Sony just can't believe the stove was hot, they need to touch it again
They lose nothing by trying but stand to gain something.
@@kunimitsune177 they’d lose a lot because converting a paid game to F2P would likely cost them another $100 million
@@onemorescout How? Redesigning metagame for F2P format isn't even 1/10th of that cost.
I'd absolutely give it a try as a F2P game just so I can quit Overwatch 2... But Marvel Rivals is coming out soon so nope, not going to try it.
@@Astralmess Concord promised no microtransactions before launch, so creating all the cosmetics from scratch and reworking the whole game to be a big F2P grind would cost lots of money. It’s not like they have a bunch sitting in the closet or anything.

Love to see the news for Expedition 33. Definitely my most anticipated game for 2025!
Aside from the bit at 29:40 -- the Yakuza Pirate in Hawaii title was also erroneously titled. Thanks for the weekly roundup as usual!
Timestamps in the future would be awesome, thank you!
@29:50 your editor needed more coffee 🤣
Not covered here, but last week a small Indie game named Drova was released. It was often compared as a 2D Gothic and having played it, I think it is a good pickup for everyone who liked those old games. It can be a hit or miss depending on how much fun you have with exploring as it's not holding you by your hand at all, making exploration really special, but it also means you can spend hours trying to find the last piece to an amulet with only very vague references of where it could be.
Actually, most people DO like LIS: Double Exposure (80% positive right now on steam). There is a very vocal crowd about one particular part of the story (which happened off-screen and only was mentioned within the game), but they aren't in any way, shape or form a majority of the players who have actually played that stuff at this point.
being majority doesn't mean much nor being more right
story decisions made in it aren't great regardless

The concept sounds pretty great imo
Live Service games is just the MMORPG craze all over again, and publishers apparently learned nothing.
Also, did anyone else noticed that he had to read the "Ascending Inferno" intro twice?... 😅
27:53 have to point out, the original Clock Tower was by Human Entertainment, not Capcom.
Another Shill Up mistake smh

A pleasant surprise to watch the Put This on Your Radar segment, and see its a game your friends made
Not going to lie seeing that new three person shooter from remedy just makes me feel like every other coop game that's coming out nowadays. Costumes, somewhat silliness despite the lore, fast pased combat, etc.Etc
Its all feeling repetitive.
At least this time the big news waited until it was almost time for the next episode rather than 20 minutes after.

Agreed, your Silent Hill 2 review was great. It kinda took me back to your more.. poetic reviews. Except there were not boat metaphors.
Or vinyl analogies
Because Fortnite is making all the money, so if we make a Fortnite we to can make all the money.
Pretty sure it's that easy/stupid
You just get how to make good content!

Yo, SkillUp (and everyone else reading this, really), I can't emphasize enough how Slay the Princess is absolutely, 100% worth your time. It's fantastic and still pretty short, so, you know, maybe go for it.
Haven't played it, but I just expect to be disappointed. I feel teased by the title.
The only way I can see the Until Dawn movie succeeding is if they do what the Clue movie did and release multiple versions of it in theaters with different endings.
20:03 This is one to keep an eye on, the developers previously made Jotun, which is a severely underrated boss rush game. I'm glad to see they're making another isometric action game.
concord has been a failure on such a massive level that it would be as hilarious to bring it back than the reveal was
Its like bringing morbius back to theaters lmao
You said, “clearing out your Jira backlog” and i don’t think anyone will realize how meta that was
About Fullbright: the team that worked on Open Roads split from Fullbright and finished the game under the name "Open Roads Team", this new release is the OG Fullbright (and it's a solo developer now).
To "make more pie" like that and spot on for me I'm watching that interview after this one cheers.
So annoying to hear about rumors of shitty games maybe coming back but when gems get released or vaulted up to #1 on steam like Factorio dlc there's not a single word about it
i've only watched like 1 of sakurai's videos but I'm definitely going to watch them all eventually. Too much valuable content in that channel.
Finding out Ubisoft has that many AC games in development is like when you find out how many unresolved conflicts the US is in.. how can it be THAT much
Ubisoft is cooked. None of those will release anytime soon. If they do...they're DOA with all the DEI.
They have so many AC games that it becomes clear that if there are too many Prince of Persia games, it might impact sales of other Prince of Persia games.
Corporate logic.

The Masahiro Sakurai channel is truly inspiring mate. He did so much, asking for really nothing in return. Truly a legend!
Someone tell gaming companies that we don’t want anymore multiplayer shooters that are similar to an existing game.
Audio messes up at 29:50 - Nice editing STU!
Would really love a Concord f2p release. I actually enjoyed the betas but just wasn't willing to spend a dime on the game.
