      Not really. I mean it's a fools errand trying to make a new BR these days. It's not going to happen. But PlayStation literally had Helldivers 2 become a massive success this year despite people insisting nonstop that it's impossible to make a new successful live service title "because they suck up all your time and you won't play anything else". That's just not true.

    • @wedgearyxsaber

      And actually the same thing happened with MMOs every publishers wanted there pie pieces. We got some really shitty MMOs in that time that all died so quickly or simply cancelled. Today, almost no MMO coming out and only a few of them survive. Same thing for those who wanted a piece of Call of Duty money, never happened.

    • @JeanneDGames
      @JeanneDGames Месяц назад

      @@wanderingwobb6300 Helldivers 2 had a good opening and is definitely a good game, but a large portion of the playerbase was falling off gradually even before the PSN debacle, and that didn't exactly help with player retention.
      While people more in tune with the ground floor of the industry might see that and go "yeah well it cycles players regularly in a healthy way, then ebbs and flows as content comes through", dipshits in suits known as Executives might see that and go "oh. This is a failure. Scrap it and redistribute the assets (read: staff) to other projects".

    I worked with Certain Affinity through a contractor doing QA on the Halo BR. It really wasn't working as they claimed it was. There was a general lack of direction for building the world. It mostly functioned correctly but much of the design was unintuitive, especially regarding verticality. You had all kinds of tools, vehicles, and actual level design encouraging you to play vertically in a major way. The only problem with that is the fact that the designers discouraged vertical gameplay every chance they could, putting game boundaries all over the place. Some of them gave you a short timer to 'return to the game area' while others would outright kill you. At one point I launched off a gravity ramp built into the level's architecture only to receive a warning to return. There were areas in which you could obtain a flying vehicle and hit the airspace ceiling with less than 3 seconds of ascending. There was a mountain near the center of the island that was hollowed out and had a facility built into it, a monolithic multi-level complex with elevators large enough for tanks and a gigantic hole out of the top, but the top half of it was covered in a kill box. There were a handful of great ideas but all of it was cobbled together by a terrible execution in a buggy engine led by people who couldn't decide on a design direction and had their minds closed off to any feedback that didn't jerk them off.

    I just am in disbelief at the kind of workaholic that Sakurai-san is. I've been tuning in every week to watch his videos on his channel for these 2 years and never in a million years did I think that it was all prerecorded. Sakurai-san had the opportunity to get a break for a few months in-between projects and instead chose to orchestrate an entire RUclips channel into existence.
    The quality and effort put into each video is amazing considering it was all for zero returns except in a non-tangible "further the industry" way.

    Live service was a disaster for this industry (in my opinion). Producing a game is no longer about making a game that people actively want to play and remember. It's about making a game that gets people addicted and then subsequently withholding meaningful content to slowly dripfeed it to players, just barely keeping them interested (and spending money).
    Imagine if filmmakers started splitting up their film into several parts and slowly releasing them over the course of a year or two while charging every month to continue viewing. Oh wait this has already happened with streaming services.

    I do have a question for you though and was hoping you could do an update video on it. What happened to Vampire the Masquerade 2? It was supposed to launch ages ago and I haven't heard hide nor hair of it since. Along with this I'm sure there're many other games that where supposed to launch but haven't for some reason or another like the KOTOR remake. Not covered here, but last week a small Indie game named Drova was released. It was often compared as a 2D Gothic and having played it, I think it is a good pickup for everyone who liked those old games. It can be a hit or miss depending on how much fun you have with exploring as it's not holding you by your hand at all, making exploration really special, but it also means you can spend hours trying to find the last piece to an amulet with only very vague references of where it could be.
