That's awesome that you all met up. I just finished watching the video where you supercharged one of your rigs and then took it out, and one of the bolts broke on the trail 😬
Love seeing experienced overlanders transitioning back to ground tents. Personally, I think RTT’s have a few benefits, but are mostly show over function. A big time price tag, a large, wind resistant weight on top of your vehicle, climbing up and down a ladder in the middle of the night, inability to stand, and having to do a take-down every time you move your vehicle. The set up time of these hub style tents are a game changer, and I’m very happy I made the move back to one.
As a side note, if anyone is interested in a budget friendly alternative, Gazelle makes a hub style tent very similar. They have both a 4 and 3 man version. So far, held up very well throughout two years of abuse, the YKK zippers have worked perfectly, and the floor is detachable allowing you to sweep out dirt.
I first met Marco @ his daughters cancer fundraiser in San Diego, such an amazing person, for a very short time we shared our Overlanding stories and life battles.
I love the simplicity of just throwing a tent on the ground. You can stand inside, there’s no need to haul a roof top tent or tow a trailer, it’s relatively cheap, keeps your roof rack relatively open, you can fit more than 4 people. The more I think about it the more a ground tent makes a lot of sense. If I didn’t have kids, I’d probably get a truck camper if a camper van, but a 4x4 van a roof rack and a bunch of camping gear is very appealing.
Nothing better then exploring the desert with genuinely amazing people who share the same passion for this lifestyle as we do, thanks again for having us.
Thanks for the review! I have the Gazelle T4 and love it! It is big enough for two XL cots, a side table in between, and plenty of room for storage Setup and breakdown is similar to the ShiftPod. Super fast.
The bag for the tent is ripping. The shift pod is basically a portable ice fishing house - very common up here in MN. They are insulated to hold heat in the winter. You can get cheap ones for about $300. Admittedly the shiftpod has a floor and bug netting but I I appreciate all your videos but I think these tents are (a) too expensive, (b) bulky, (c) heavy, and frankly not very easy to set up compared to many traditional ground tents. For $300 you could be in an 5 person Alps Taurus Outfitter with aluminum poles. That tent weighs 12lbs, packs down to half the size, is 10x8ft footprint size with a 6ft standing height and can be set up by my 13yr old daughter by herself (admittedly she is 2 merit badges away from Eagle Scout). Anyway - I love that you show all the cool stuff but some of it is not worth the extra spend over traditional stuff. But hey there are other channels for the boring cheap traditional stuff. Thank you always for your great and thoughtful content!
After much, much research comparing the benefits of RTT's and GT's we decided to invest in a T4 Overland Edition tent. Love the RTT concept but until they get MUCH lighter and more aerodynamic, we simply did not see the benefits. Love what you guys do. We thank you!
It was between the ShiftPod III and the Gazelle T4 for my family (3+ the dog). As much as I like the reflective material on the ShiftPod, I realized I didn't need it. I camp in the SoCal desert (basically everywhere you have posted in Azna State Park), and have been using a cheap Coleman 3-man tent for 25+ years but finally decided it was time to get a nicer tent I could stand up in a couple of years ago. We ended up with the Gazelle T4 which as you know sets up and breaks down the same as the ShiftPod, and it has been great! I also liked the price a little better. I hope to see you guys out there sometime.
I have been using my T4 Gazelle now going on four years, its big and bulky. But it is really well made. Want to downsize to the mini Shiftpod or the Gazelle T3. Cannot find them, sold out.
That price definitely beats the ShiftPod, and definitely for the room you get (and the better zippers, it sounds like). Looks like I just found my tent for summer.
Out of all those amazing rigs I honestly like what you have the most I think. There’s something to keeping it simple and light weight. Never mind the cost savings for most people.
For people with a lower budget, look in to the Gazelle T3 or T4. I use the T3, and its great. Especially when wheeling and camping in different spots every day.
Best tent ever. I have a cot and a lawn chair in there easily as well as my bag. It’s a true 4 season tent and you need your window slightly open as your body temp will warm up the inside, but it’s nice and cool in the hot sun.
I came across your videos looking for reviews on a fire bowl and ended up watching for 3 hrs.. everyone sounds like really solid folks, I'm glad yall are living your best life would love to camp with yall
A story till now! Yes I follow them that's awesome that you guys meet up. ASTN has some of the best drone footage of ever seen on RUclips top notch. Excellent review
I like the Shift Pod; I like the ventilation and how easily it sets up and breaks down. Thanks for doing the review on it. Good to see you doing an adventure with Marco and Josh; really nice guys! I'm glad Marco is liking his 392; it seems to work well pulling the trailer behind him on all the adventures. Great review and thanks for making it more than just a review. Hope you got some footage of the trail; I'm sure a lot of people would like to see what the trail you all were on looked like; I know I would! Thanks again for sharing all the different content of Jeep upgrades and trails. It's been a big educational journey for me, and I have definitely learned a lot because of the videos you've made over the years!
That's an insulated icefishing tent with a floor in it. Literally throw a tarp under an insulated pop-up ice hut and you have the exact same thing. Looks identical to an Eskimo 949i except silver instead of red. Couple hundred bucks at cabelas
I just found your video series, and I must say it is spectacular. With all the negativity going on in this country today it’s nice to see a great positive show like yours. You put just the right amount of everything in your videos
Awesome video , great to see Canuck you tubers i already follow in your video, i always was curious about the tent , great review on it the current price on it is $799 U.S. most places and i don't do enough camping to justify the price, I still use a Eureka mountaineering tent which i am amazed has held up in torrential rain a couple of times, the shift pod mini is still an awesome high quality product 👍
This is basically the same tech as ice fishing shanties - which I was seriously considering purchasing for camping until I caught this... You sold me, thanks much!!
Love you guys! Thank you for the review! The new SHIFTPODIIIs are shipping and SHIFTPODIIImini is inbound! Also note we added 6 inches to the new SHIFTPODIIImini so it is now 6'6" x 6'6" and features carbon fiber spars and hubs!
I love my Gazelle T3 and it has this same setup. It has the dimensions that allow me to lay out at 6'2 on a cot. I will warn anyone that gets one of these about the rain fly. If it is raining put it on, if it might rain...Don't. Just keep the fly with you inside so if it does you can drop the roof and put it on. I'm a light sleeper and those desert bugs just loved to crawl around under the fabric making scritching noises.
This is perfect. I’m in the market for a quick setup tent but for the money, I’m going to give the Coleman dark room instant up tent a go. It is great seeing your setup Brad. Even if we don’t buy the product it gives us an idea of what we do and don’t want in our setup. Also, I can’t find anywhere how to get this thing in Australia 🤔
I have portable ice fishing house that sets up the same way, The Eskimo portable is a quilted material and holds the heat in very well and even has a Chimney hole and it’s 10x10
Wow, I just stated watching Epic Adventure Outfitters because I recently became interested in a Gladiator Mojave and started watching their build vids. It's a small World that these Canadian creators ended up with you in east country Socal! Now I get to check out The Story Till Now's channel. Great work Trail Recon, so happy seeing these different creators I enjoy watching getting together. Also a great surprise, was just expecting a tent review, but so much more :)
Love it !!! The Story Tell Now is one of the best channels out there. The shiftpod mini is pretty cool. I really enjoy my Gazelle T4. Same basic setup. The T4 is a little bit taller. I prefer the T4 over my rtt.
For such an expensive tent I can't believe zippers have failed. I made a tipi shifted type tent. Not near the cost, larger but great for heat control. Use 10' poles, 2 big rolls of 25 ' reflectix, a ground tarp.easy, light, and cool.
This Tent looks like NASA made it. It's really cool. I prefer Quechua tents though. 2 seconds to set up (they pop up like popcorn you just toss them in the air), 15 to collapse, integrated water and windproof fly. They turn in to a wheel shape when collapsed, and they are fairly reasonably priced too. Also, they don't weight a lot for what they offer. I started with a small one-person tent for backpacking, and later upgraded to a bigger one. Highly recommended.
Thanks for the review! I noticed you mentioned a zipper failure on the bag and another on the Tent but didn't elaborate on the tent zipper failure - with only 30 nights on it, that's a bit surprising! Was it an operator error situation? My backpacking tents are pretty fragile (my 2 man is 2.4lbs - it's a materials compromise!) But for a car-camping tent, did you expect a more robust zipper?
MARCOOOOO!!! I Love Marco! Shaun & The Story Til Now is legit! Great adventures! A squared plus B squared equals C squared. Curious about the zipper problems the tent has.
I also have a ShiftPOD Mini. It is a great tent that is quick to set up and take down, while a great way to get out of the elements. When I not taking the RTT on the trailer, the ShiftPOD is my go to!
I always wanted a pod but ended up getting a Gazelle T8 for my wife, dog and I, very happy with it. Thanks for the review, it does look like and awesome tent and well made.
It is basically an ice fishing tent. I had the same idea but realized it is not water proof and when the wind blows the sides cave in. There are better tents.
Glad you showed the shift pod and you are correct, the bag is too small ! I’ve watched Sean for a while as he is just a couple of provinces over from me. We are driving down next week from Canada as well and will be in AZ on Sunday for a couple weeks........ just says’....... lol. But first, coffee!
Looks a lot like the design for an ice fishing pop-up. Those things fly in the wind without an anchor point, and can also collapse from wind if the anchor pop out points aren't anchored.
gazelle t4 with a roll of Reynolds wrap is my budget option ;-). Actually my boys and I use the Discobed bunk beds and we can easy sleep 4 in the Gazelle t4 which is very similar in size and construction. Also I can attest to the weather proofness of this style of tent. We had 50 mile an hour winds on a trip and all that happened was one side caved in. Almost as weather proof as our Kodiak Canvas!
We've been using those tents when ice fishing for at least a decade up here in canada.thow in a lawn chair and a propane heater and before you know it you're in a t-shirt fishing -30 celcius weather
These things are sold out/back ordered. Been trying to find one for the past six months. I have the 4 person Gazelle which is similar, but I have a truck with a 6' bed, Gazelle also offers an overlanding package upgrade. A much bigger waterproof storage bag with a ground tarp and heavy duty tent stakes/cordage. The bigger storage bag is worth every penny.
What a great video! Great video quality, picture, audio and lighting were spot on. I love the tour of all the different trucks and the desert chief was killing it. I bet he is invited on all trips! Enjoyed it.
You'd use that rainfly if you lived in Oregon! LOL! I have the Shiftpod Mini, but haven't used it yet ... I also have a Gazelle which I love. I'm thinking of using the Shiftpod as a "privacy" tent for my teardrop trailer. It should be great for that!
Have you looked at ice fishing tents? This tent got the design from those tents. You'll save about $300 on a tent of this size...2 or 3 person. I recommend the 3 man for 1-2 people. Eskimo is a very good brand to look at. ☺️
looks and deploys like my Eskimo ice fishing tent, same design, I have had a Gazelle T4 for about 3 years now, love it, the price on Shift Pod is a little much for what it is.

I’ve been looking at the Igloo ice fishing tents. Very similar but are insulated and very weather proof. They’re larger and taller too. I’m only 5’ 9” so this unit would be ok for me. The cost is not very attractive though. The Igloos are only slightly more and seem to be better in most every way. Nice enough review and lots of the other gear discussed was interesting.
I've got a 96sqft pop up ive had it in -45c over night, that honestly sucked. Use a diesel heater not propane unless you enjoy condensation. Circ fans are a must in the winter, me being 6'2" the the ceiling on mine is 7' high the fan makes a world of difference. -25c ill sleep on top the blankets in a hoodie and sweat pants. My tent weights in at 84lbs. Also make sure no one stumbles in and steps on the zipper or you're going to have a bad time.
I received the shiftpod mini as a gift from my best friend. This is a great review on it. I will add that you may want to transport and store the tent with the bottom removed. I know it takes away from the convenience and part of the reason you’d want to buy this tent in the first place. The reason you want to do this is because the hub for the poles on the ceiling has exposed metal hoop. The hoop makes contact with the floor when the tent is folded up. After several trips and tossing the tent around the hoop wears down the tent bottom and creates a hole. The tent does come with a patch kit to repair the floor so you can take care of this problem.
I’d like to see a good comparison between the new version of this tent against the Coleman and Costco instant tents. I’m a guy who loves getting the best of the best gear but sometimes that budget gear impressed me
We had an absolute blast hanging with you guys! Thanks for showing us around! 🤠
Heck ya, we had a great time and looking forward to connecting with you all on another adventure in the future!

I switched from a Roofnest Condor Overland 2 RTT to a Shiftpod Mini III+. Best decision of my life.

I have the Shiftpod Mini, but haven't used it yet ... I also have a Gazelle which I love. I'm thinking of using the Shiftpod as a "privacy" tent for my teardrop trailer. It should be great for that!
BADASS setups! I'd be happy with any of em! Looks like an absolute blast for sure
That's a really nice tent. But I can't afford it.😁 Great video!
Have you looked at ice fishing tents? This tent got the design from those tents. You'll save about $300 on a tent of this size...2 or 3 person. I recommend the 3 man for 1-2 people.
Eskimo is a very good brand to look at. ☺️
ShiftPod, not cheap, but easy up & down, sturdy, and perfect for Burning Man, or most any camping trip you can throw at it!
looks and deploys like my Eskimo ice fishing tent, same design, I have had a Gazelle T4 for about 3 years now, love it, the price on Shift Pod is a little much for what it is.
Nice review, I am interested in this tent rather than a roof top model.
New Shift Pod mini III is 6'-5" square. Think I'll be getting one
Just picked me up a Gazelle T4 Hub tent. Can’t wait to try it out!!!
Very cool tent from the future

Great review on the Shift Pod tent and nice to see the rest of the gang joining in on this trip 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the tent review. Love it. Jim and Judy in Texas
This is a great idea!!! Have you had any issues with the zippers? Was surprised to hear the tent had a failed zipper after only 30 nights
@@ewingfox6459 no issues with the zippers yet.
Excellent tent. Enjoy your shows very much.
I’d like to see a good comparison between the new version of this tent against the Coleman and Costco instant tents. I’m a guy who loves getting the best of the best gear but sometimes that budget gear impressed me
Colomn gots a quick pop up tent that makes this tent look difficult. Highly recommend it. And you can stand in the colomn one.
