Her mom looked shell shocked...and not too happy to be losing the golden goose!!!
Mom was in denial as much as daughter. Definitely unhappy about losing perks, wouldn't be surprised if she resents that loss for the first year. But Grandma was great, graciously acknowledging the issue.

This show was so underappreciated in it's time. neat that these old episodes are still relevant today! i watched this when i was 16 with my mom, now I'm 30. It's weird seeing people my age on this show, I wonder how they are now as they near their 50s.
Sadly they are using food as a comfort zone. Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys was in that same boat. Someone should tell them to go for weight loss because it's doing a number on their health. Maybe they were outcasts growing up, so they are making up for what they didn't have as Kids. Nothing wrong with helping out Fam but you have to never go overboard. I live with my mother but since my father died I've really had to step up. I've helped her with Snow Shoveling Services, Lawn Care, and Lawn Mowing, House Tax, House Insurance, not to mention paying Room & Board and taking care of my own Bills. It's challenging but I hardly spend for anything unless it's needed.
Our family get togethers usually consist of pot luck dinners at home. We play cards, board games, talk and laugh and have a blast. No need to go to fancy restaurants. Occasionally we all go out to eat to celebrate a birthday. Everyone except the birthday boy or girl splits the bill. Picnics at parks in the nice fall weather, watching the kids play, free concerts in the park, community activities and festivals. There is so much to do without spending a fortune.

Same! My husband and I come from big family oriented cultures (Filipino and Lebanese). Other than bringing over a food dish, we will go out and buy a bottle of wine (Even if its the cheap stuff.) If I spent 300 to 400.00 for a family dinner, my husband would throw a fit. I would only spend that on a special occasion (Birthdays and anniversaries) not every day!

This woman seems like she's terrified of her mom and wants to please her so bad. Her mom seemed quiet not because she was sad for them, but because they actually were setting some boundaries and cutting her off. The husband's mom seemed to be way more understanding. Her brother also looked well capable to take care of himself, so why was the wife taking care of him and their mom? Hopefully they kept up with what they learned on the show, and didn't fall back into the old patterns.

What we also don't know is how much they NET on those two $70k salaries. If they actually BROUGHT HOME $70k each, technically they could have lived on one spouse's paycheck and paid off their debt with the other's in just about a year's time. And yes, that empty basement is unrealized income ... even if they didn't want to have permanent renters, just renting it out for a year would have contributed a LOT against their debt. I DO applaud all these debtors for allowing themselves to be made vulnerable to the public - it shows they are serious about tackling the "elephant in the room" before it destroyed them.
I don't think they were supporting the family as much as spoiling them. I guess she was paying for her mom's alarm service but that pales in comparison to $100 meals and $60 spa treatments.
However, yes, i would have encouraged them to rent out the basement so they can create a nest egg against a bad diagnosis.
She did mention the basement when she first toured the house.

3 years ago, I changed job twice in a row and ended up tripling my salary. With this new income, I thought I could finally treat my family, go to the restaurants and on holiday. We grew up poor and it was life-changing. I was using more and more my credit cards, since I had the money to pay it back. I ended up maxing them so fast.
Now, everything is in a consolidation loan with my bank and the cards are cut. The debt will be paid in a year, and I can still put a decent chunk in my savings.
It was very scary to realise I could mess up my life in a few months time. I won't be able to help my family, when they will really need it, if I have no money. Lesson learned !

I spend 700 euro a month and feel guilty. If i spend the same amount as them i would be already in jail or maybe in the streets.

Honestly cutting food from 2k a month to 500/mth is still a ton of food. At same time as this show aired i was feeding 2 adults for 80-100/mth. Cutting back excessive food should help them healthwise too.

If i could feed 2 adults comfortably on 100/mth when this was filmed thats like 130 cad at the time. 500/mth is still a TON. 2k is insane. Dont forget this show filmed 20yrs ago. Today im feeding 2 teens who eat like its a personal challenge and spend 800-900/mth us in groceries, but they eat 3lbs of ground beef when i make tacos, or 2 hamburger helpers between them. My youngest can eat a full meal then polish off a medium takeout pizza as a snack. When im without the kids for a month in summers i might spend 150-200 that month on myself, and thats if i get takeout frequently. 2k today is high unless you are feeding a football team or 6 teen boys with tapeworms. In 00? Thats like 3k or more
They were eating at expensive restaurants and paying the bills for their extended family.
I understand that you want to make a connection to their weight, but with standard measures it is much more expensive to buy healthy unprocessed food than it is to buy high calorie junk food.

@@Zoot_of_Anthrax our food is more expensive here in Canada though. My starving student days were about the time of this show. My grocery budget was $50-$60 a week as a single.

She said something about showing off. My family would have freaked out if I tried to pick up a bill like that. They would absolutely not let anyone of us take on that kind of responsibility for everyone.

Instead of tanning and spa of $800, both should hit the gym, and stop eating out. Period. Yes, they are overweight, this is clear, but the comment for the gym is for them to get their lives back. I cannot tell you how depression and being overweight or obese go hand in hand. They spend because its a quick “buzz” for happiness….they also would be able to stand up to their family if they felt better about themselves. Might sound superficial, but it’s true…the MINUTE you feel good about yourself,, you stop trying to please others (which this spoiling the mother and family is all about)
I like that this episode touched on how expectations of how we just care for family members is a noble thing to want but it's not sustainable unless you are very well off. Nothing wrong with treating family members now and then but you need to budget for that and not be afraid to let your family members know that you are on a budget.
Don’t know if the woman can be helped. I cringed when she said Gail was “mean to us” for pointing out they spent $1300/month on eating out and it was unacceptable.
To be fair, she did intend it as a joke and only said it when she realised that she was right about their debts.

It really is important to come up with a plan in case you get sick. I was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2020. I had surgeries and chemo. Fortunately I had insurance through work but still paid for my surgeries (my chemo was covered). I worked through the whole time. I didn't go into medical debt. The only debt which I paid off in 4 months is my air conditioner died in July in the middle of my treatments (July in Arizona is horrible). That is why I have really focused on an emergency fund for the house and my car over the past 2 years.

Young lady is either trying to buy her family’s affection OR keep herself in a power position in her family by holding financial strings. Hopefully that relationship can be more healthy in future. I have adult kids and yes we treat ourselves by eating out a few times a year but we take turns paying too.

Been disabled since high school, I'm used to going without. I HAVE to live within strict budget, or I'm homeless. I cut: #1 TECHNOLOGY-NO internet, TV, microwave, security cameras, or computer (1 Android only) over $200/month saved, PLUS zero energy wasted by tech (about $25). #2 Not eating out/ordering, coffee shops, junk food or desserts-hundreds saved! #3 Zero vacations-thousands saved! NO patio furniture, sheds, power mower, and electric weed-whacker, so zero fuel costs-no fancy stuff! 😁 I may not have everything I WANT, but I have everything I NEED!
My family refuses to allow me to spend a lot on them. They worry about my retirement.

My 88-year-old mother has never in her whole life handled her money it was her parents then my dad then my sister and now I have been paying her bills for about 10 years we used to give her a certain amount of money to last her for the month for Bingo gas and groceries and she would have it gone in a week's time so now I just give her money each week for Bingo she quit driving 2 years ago and I go to the store up until when the pandemic hit my mom used to go to the store with me now she won't. Overtime we have saved quite a bit of money for her. Her roof is going to have to be replaced in the next couple years and she needs a new air conditioning unit they were able to get it going for this year but it won't make it another year if it makes it till the end of summer will be happy.

A few points from 700 club. It was hard work but well worth it. Credit cards will destroy you quickly. And I make under 35,000. So I know about being broke
Well he could be the one who is a spender and will absolutely ruined you when kids come along the way and you'll be staying home until you get back to work. You better choose wisely
My husband and I make about less then 1/2 then that with $3K CC debt will payoff to get rid of it next year. We will also pay down our car and work the baby steps.

Like why can't her adult brother work? Is he disabled? Those tears don't feel genuine but maybe they are. Junk love along with the junk food.
And yeah, they need to address their spa, and dog and dining/eating habits before they have more serious health issues. At the very least swap some of those world class meals for a salad, a couple heads of lettuce are cheap.

If you are not able to use credit cards to your advantage you are not financially versed enough to use credit cards. This is a great show as we can all use a reality check if only to check on others in our lives and help them avoid this. There are some issues here that need therapy intervention even if they pay off the debt. invest in your health, get healthy according to a doctor/therapist. Anyone in a rent to own also needs to do the math. A relative of mine had a new RAC fridge that they paid to own for two years. They had to move, could not take fridge and I did the math and they had already paid 2x the price of the fridge new. Best wishes to his health, scary stuff.
Yep. With cashback on my card I accrue more than the fee for the card. If you pay in full each month you pay zero interest and are left with extra cash at the end of the year. My bank even lets you buy financial products. I dump it in a retirement savings account which then gets me a tax credit. It's just a matter of using them for things you can already afford now.
Exactly! I have paid interest on credit card debt exactly one time in my life. When we decided to buy a couch and a chair for our living room in our first house, we knew we could not pay it off at the end of the month. We let it ride until the second month and then paid it off. Other than that we have never in our lives allowed a penny to sit on a credit card. If we can’t pay it off that month, we don’t buy it.
We never put meals/groceries on credit card......you eat, you poop it out and what have you got? Nothing you want to hold in your hands!

Yes. Kim & Aggie are adorable. I saw them clean a Bachelor's Pad but I think he may have had a slight case of asperger's syndrome. I wonder if these two are trying to be cool now because when they were kids they probably weren't all that cool. Forgive me they need to do some serious work pertaining to their health. As 19 year old attempting to pay for my own rent this year, I see myself spending a little to much and I’m only spending 300….on wants that’s it 300 makes me scared couldn’t even imagine 1300 a month

She makes over 70,000 a year and they can’t make mortgage payments if he stops working? That makes no sense to me. If you lived like a hermit and stayed home all the time and didn’t spend on anything else at the very least you could make your mortgage payment

It's from the early 2000s so of course they all look older. People look older in older videos because of the video quality but also the trends are older in our eyes. There's studies that have been done to explain it but the short awnser is the video is old so our brains think they look older

Stay in hotel with kitchen suite $50 steak dinner. $144,000 income yearly. Where does all the money go? They pay $6000 a year on credit card debt! I feel 🤢 just hearing about them. I hope they fixed this because now times are very tough

I assume they didn't calculate taxes in their incomes, and living in Canada, you can assume 30%+ tax loss. Even at 100k a year they are doing well and I'd imagine this show filmed atleast 10 years ago when money went further. Like most people they fell into the make more buy more entrapment that we are all susceptible to.

We never think of a one level house or a two level house with everything like a full bathroom and laundry on at least the lower level until we get older or have our parents live with us when they get older, plus access from outside to inside with a wheel chair or walker. Or a mother in law suit that could also be for grown kids that move back in or to be rented out for a passive income and repair deductions for when we retire. This couple will do fine. Pray his health is good and for them and their family.
If they do not have kids, the only dependent they should be providing for is the dog, and she doesn't cost much . Quit playing Mine Host to all and sundry, you find out who your real friends are.

What kind of family keeps taking money , food etc.? You mean her family never noticed they always paid for dinner with credit cards? Why would the wife continue it? Is spending on her family how she gets self esteem and familiar approval?
The family knew the couple was overspending but kept taking until the spigot was turned off finally.
A card can be for convenience not just credit. It's a convenient way to pay at a restaurant, then you can just pay off the balance. I wouldn't think anything of it if someone used a card at a restaurant, I wouldn't assume they're in debt.

Generally speaking, the food you can cook yourself is better than you’ll find at restaurants. My hubby & I NEVER spent more than $125 at a restaurant. Material goods are meaningless in the end.
That might be regional. I live in an area with countless restaurants that serve unique, gourmet cooking that is delicious and definitely a step up from home cooking. But I agree, people should focus on improving their own cooking skills so that they can eat good food at home for much cheaper. With all of the cooking blogs, cookbooks, and RUclips, there's no reason not to.

As family living the high life on someone else's dime, why didnt they push back and tell them this is too much? I would have been so uncomfortable taking 5 star restaurant meals as norm.They couple earns a good wage... but they are not Mr and Mrs Claus.
She definitely looks like she spends a quarter of their income on food. Staying out of restaurants could save her health, because as things stand, she is headed for cardiac catastrophe.
Even if I could afford it I could not spend that kind of money on something that will be sewage in the next few days, how self absorbed can two people be? There health is suffering or will be with their obesity also they need to stop eating and get more involved in physical activity and volunteer work in their community.

I lost my job after my employer went under. I had any job a day later - I took the first job offered but I was 50% of my salary but I worked a night job to earn the same salary. I had another full time job in 3 months but I learned to keep a 3 month salary nest egg.
The fact that they're both obese speaks volumes -it's the same as their out of control spending: all around instant gratification. I see a lot of that in this show. Also, I never see any books in the houses.

These people clearly didn’t know what “wants” are vs “needs”. You don’t need a huge BBQ grill, nor need patio furniture, nor need a snow shovel for that matter (a broom works too).
